Mission: The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence seeks to secure freedom from gun violence through research, strategic engagement and effective policy advocacy. The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence (Ed Fund) is the 501(c)(3) affiliate organization of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV). The organization has engaged in a number of successful public education campaigns over the years aimed at reducing gun death and injury. The Ed Fund was founded in 1978 in the wake of the civil rights and nonviolent movements of the 1960s. Our first president, Mike Beard, interned for John F. Kennedy and marched with Dr. King. He saw his idols struck down by assassin’s bullets and understood how gun violence destroys lives and communities. His dream was an America where families would be free from gun violence; one where we settle our differences peacefully, democratically.
Target demographics: constantly developing new ideas to strengthen the gun violence prevention movement
Geographic areas served: across America
Programs: In 2012 we completed a two-year project where we determined the best framing/messaging to galvanize the American public and counter the NRA’s propaganda. We have also championed a novel strategy called “countermarketing” that involves cities using their “buyer power” to positively influence the behavior of the gun industry. Second, we are building a strong coalition through our Campaign to Stop Gun Violence. Consisting of more than 100 national organizations whose primary focus is not gun violence prevention, the members have committed to working toward a safer America. Collectively, the Campaign’s individual membership numbers in the millions. Third, we are addressing the fact that many continue to view the NRAas a mainstream organization that exemplifies American values, despite the fact that they are totally out of step with the overwhelming majority of the American public on the gun issue. Through our www.nraontherecord.org website, the Ed Fund is exposing the NRA’s extremism.
