ETM's good goes beyond just what they advertise on their website. As a former employee and then eventual partner teacher of theirs for many years I have come to see many of the levels of good they do.First is the obvious one of providing an experience for inner city students who otherwise would not have had the opportunity at all. The stories go on and on, year after year, about the student who was exposed to an ETM program at their school and are now either performing better overall or are taking it a step further as to be at high schools like Laguardia. These countless success stories would not have been possible without ETM.Second is the opportunity it offers its teachers. I was well prepared coming from my undergrad to take on the world as a music educator, but I would not have been nearly as successful in those first few years had it not been for the support from ETM. The professional developments, the resources, the advice, the counseling... it was almost like student teaching 2.0. I soaked up everything I could and adapted to become a better music educator.I don't know where I would be today without ETM, and thousands of new students every year say the same thing.
I have had friends who have gotten certified through other fellowship programs. NONE of them have received the support that I did while working at ETM. I was able to get a job right away, full-time in a school while I finished my master's degree and certification. They helped me with everything from how to manage classroom behavior, to repertoire suggestions for different grades.
Most helpful are the benchmarks and the lesson planning tips. I cannot say enough about ETM. I was recently hired as a DOE teacher in the school they placed me and it all because of their help. I felt more prepared my first year of teaching than some of my colleagues after 2-3 years.
As a new, small school with limited resources, we wanted to ensure that we were providing our students with a well rounded education which included arts education. To fulfill our expectations we partnered with Education Through Music (ETM). ETM provides our school and students with a certified Music Teacher who teaches general music instruction. The music instruction that our students receive prepares them to play an instrument in the upper grades, middle school, high school, and beyond. Each year through the direction of ETM, our students perform in a Winter & Spring Concert. Our staff receives professional development and we also have fall and spring Music Workshops for students and parents. We are also invited each year to attend ETM’s Music Festival where various student orchestras and concert bands from across the city perform. All these great things are possible because of our wonderful partnership with ETM! ETM had not only met our expectations, but they have exceeded them.

I am the Asssitant Principal at P.S. 76 and have worked with Education Through Music for the past five years. Our partnership with Education Through Music has not only provided our entire student population with formalized music instruction, but it has also offered various musical opportunities for our staff and students. Children have been given the opportunity to learn to play various instruments, participate in after school musical programs, perform in concerts and theatrical productions, and has helped to foster an appreciation for the arts. Education Through Music has supported P.S. 76 in our quest to provide our students with a well rounded education and has provided our staff and students with the resources necessary to build and sustain a formal music program. We appreciate the hard work and dedication that the staff at Education Through Music has shown to P.S. 76 and consider our partnership invaluable.
I am a principal who has partnered with ETM for three years and I plan to continue our partnership for many years to come. ETM provides our school with an excellent music teacher and a complete program of music curriculum, professional development, family workshops and two choral concerts each year. Our students benefit greatly from a rich program in music. Not only is music education valuable in itself, it also promotes higher-order thinking, discipline, and creativity that transfers to other subjects. It has been a pleasure to work with ETM administration and staff. This is a well-run organization that provides a high level of service.
Education Through Music (ETM) helped shaped my life to what it is today. Without this organization I wouldn't be in LaGuardia High School for the arts and performing arts. The whole experience was just amazing and I would go back and do it again any day. It helped me focus in school and also helped me participate and interact with other students. The memories and the people of ETM will always be so close to my heart and I thank them.
Late August we received word that our music teacher was leaving our school. A friend of mine told me about Education Through Music (ETM). At the time, we were looking for someone with a commitment to making sure every student in our school had meaningful access to music. It was beyond our wildest hopes that this teacher could also make important interdisciplinary connections between music and other academic content areas. As we all know, arts programs are typically the first to suffer in times of economic hardship. Faced with rapidly diminishing budgets administrators often eliminate the arts—very often leaving students that perhaps most need creative and inspiration outlets high and dry.
The teacher—Jason—now working with us through ETM is, in a word, amazing. He is completely open and welcoming to all students, firmly believing that every student in our building can learn. Along with the phenomenal work he does every day in the school, the ETM program has given our teachers support in connecting music to other classrooms—showing them how music is integral to student development both academically and socially.
I firmly believe in arts education, but as one of those aforementioned principals I was dreading facing the increasing budget crisis in our district. I was sure that my students—in one of the most impoverished districts in New York City—would suffer because I would be forced to dismantle any sort of arts education in our school. I do not think I am over-exaggerating when I say that ETM has already been enormously influential and has given many of our students life-changing opportunities: in terms of their sense of self-worth, their appreciation of the arts, and their ability to connect the arts to every day life in and out of the classroom.

Education Through Music (ETM) began partnering with our school several years ago. I entered into this partnership so that every child in the school could have a tactile music experience, something which is not possible with many other programs. Our vision was to integrate music into our educational practice, in order to improve our students' academic achievement and overall development. We are a high poverty school, which unfortunately translates into factors that do not allow music enrichment to be a part of such a child’s educational experience. We all know, however, that music is a rich gateway, affording children many different points of entry in education.
Our experience with the ETM program has been that it involves every student in the school. In this first year, students are excited to learn singing, keyboard and the recorder. ETM's teaching artists are trained and mentored, and make use of a stimulating curriculum to teach the children skills and knowledge in music as well as skills that support their learning and development in other areas. They work to involve all members of the school community, to foster cultural change and build support for music education. Without a doubt, ETM has enriched our students' lives lives with music.
Having ETM at One World Middle School is really important to our students. This program enhances teamwork skills and discipline. In order for an orchestra to sound good, all players must work together harmoniously towards a single goal, the performance, and must commit to learning music, attending rehearsals, and practicing. These are essential values that the students learn and can transfer into any academic area.
After my son started with the ETM band group, he became very excited to go to school. His grades improved! Even at home he behaves better because he finishes his homework early in order to practice on his instrument. He has been inspired by music and discovered his talent. I would honestly recommend this organization to everybody as it has done wonders for my son. I'm really thankful for all of the opportunities this program has given him. Keep up the amazing work.
Education Through Music(ETM) has helped to transform our sixth graders from shy timid boys and girls to proud expressive young ladies and gentlemen! We at One World Middle School believe in educating the whole child and ETM has helped us to do just that. The students cant wait for Ms. Perkins to come. They loved performing in the Winter Concert and are practicing rigorously for their Spring Concert! Through performing the students are finding their voice and it is building their self-esteem!
St. Clare's School has been serviced by ETM since 2005. As a school principal, I also had ETM at another school for 5 years. The children from pre-k to 8th grade have been given music appreciation, music theory, choral training and string orchestra training. They have been taught to perform at school concerts and other community venues throughout the years.A fewe years ago the children in their first year of violin class were able to perform with Joshua Bell at the Waldorf Astoria. They have also performed for school open houses. One of the local assembly members requested their presence at a community awards ceremony for children who entered an essay contest about their grandparents. This music program provides the opportunity for the children to gain self confidence, pride and cultural appreciation of music and art. The teachers are well-trained and very talented! What a gift this program has been for our school community.
I am a teacher/dean at One World Middle School where ETM has worked with our students throughout the year. The students have really flourished and have grown tremendously. For many students, this was the first time they were exposed to music and what a joy! This experience for our students has been a great one and we hope we have an opportunity to establish a long lasting relationship with them in the future.
Education Through Music, Is An Amazing Program That Works To Make Sure Children Are Able To Experience Life Through The Eyes of Music! Through This Program Children Are Able To Both Understand And Appreciate Music For What It Is!
I am the principal of a brand new school, One World Middle School, that opened its doors to students in September of 2011. I am not sure where to even begin -- in such a short time, I am blown away by the nurturing of our school community by Education Through Music. They take time and believe in our student Ambassadors during moments where it is a bit hard to :)
The opportunity and experience that ETM provides sparks something inside of our Ambassadors. They invited our students to sing at a gala. They took time to come in and work with our students to prepare for the gala. There were moments were students wanted to give up but they encouraged students to keep going while pushing them to be at their best. In short, the gala was a huge success! One student who has regularly cut from September and was thinking of joining a gang a few months back sang his heart out on that stage while his mother cried next to me. As he left Tuesday evening he asked me "When are we doing that again Ms. Wynne?" Another student who barely speaks in and out of class sang and smiled on the stage and expressed how excited she was afterwards. Students want to know when can they do this again. Music has been ignited in their hearts and it is because of ETM. I could go on and on about the fire that was sparked in every Ambassador.. but put simply ETM is a one of a kind!
I am a Principal of a new small middle school in the Bronx -- One World Middle School @Edenwald. When I began recruiting students last April, parents expressed an interest in Music within the school. At the time, music was not part of our curricula. As I continued recruiting students and parents continued to express interest in music I began to rethink my decision on music within the school. I began to investigate music programs on-line and through word of mouth. Education Through Music was recommended highly from neighboring principals, colleagues, parents, students and my network. When I contacted ETM, they visited my school to discuss a partnership. I was impressed with their interest in the mission/vision of my school. They took a real interest in how music would fit with our mission and vision and emphasized how this was a significant factor in our partnership. We agreed we were a great fit and fast forward to the first day of music with our students. The music teacher from ETM made contact with me and came in during the summer to decorate the music space. The environment is inviting and student friendly. On the first day of music the students LOVED it. They would not stop talking about music. Parents were excited that we incorporated music into our program. They talked so much I emailed ETM to see if we could either add an extra day and/or create an after school program. Our music teacher assigned is pro-active and is willing to join us on a parent evening to lead a student performance. ETM administrative staff works hand-in-hand with me and has been extremely helpful with all of my questions. My experience has been a positive one and I am so excited to build our partnership so our students can benefit from the talents of ETM. Thank you ETM!
ETM provides exemplary music inwstruction and experience for students in our K-5 school building including a wonderful 5th grade band and 3rd and 4th grade chorus.
Education Through Music is a nonprofit music program that has been in our school for several years. As a classroom teacher in the school, I can't say enough about how the students in my class "loved' going to music and how much it benefited them academically, musically, and socially. Without ETM, many of the students in my school would never have had the opportunity to be exposed to a quality music program. Some of the students are in chorus and others are learning an instrument in addtion to the regular program. There are over 90 5th graders in the band who come in at 7:00 AM 3 days a week to practice! The dedication of the music staff is incredible. They come in early, stay late, and give up preps and lunches to give the students extra music lessons. Our school is very fortunate to have ETM and I hope they can continue their wonderful program.
Education Through Music is an amazing program that has brought so much to our school. Before its inception here at PS 182 we had a very basic music education program that was provided to only a small percentage of our population. It left a lot teachers like myself with NO music background in charge of teaching their classes music. Fast forward to now and we have an outstanding program with highly qualified, dedicated music teachers who are able to capture the attention of every child and make learning exciting and fun. This year we even have an orchestra teacher and I had almost half my class sign up to learn to play an instrument! The vast majority of the students would never have had any of these opportunities if it weren't for Education Through Music. I myself never had any formal music lessons or music teacher until high school. I have learned so much in the last couple of years with the Education Through Music Program and realize the importance of music in children's lives that I have already started music lessons for my own two children who are under the age og three. I applaud Education Through Music for the stellar job they are doing. My entire class cannot wait until 10:10 on Wednesdays when we have our music class and I am proud to say I can't wait either. It is fun for all of us and I love to participate right along with the students.
As a school principal in an urban elementary school, I have seen the Education through Music program changed children's attitudes in a positive way. The music teachers infuse music into the core subjects making learning more fun and inviting. For my students, ETM is their first experience with a musical instrument. Students are learning to read music, play notes, and this year we are forming a band. As pleased as I am with the program, what is most important are the children and they truly are excited to be part of a Music Program.
KUDOS TO THE ETM STAFF and those who, year after year, continue to support this program!!!
While working as the education director for the Stamford Symphony Orchestra we were fortunate enough to gain two major funding opportunities. When tasked with developing a curriculum incorporated program for the Boys and Girls Club of Stamford and a district-wide student concert for the Stamford Public School district, I turned to Education Through Music. Through their incredible expertise we were able to create the following two programs and it was only through their dedication and hard work that these they were as successful as they have been for the past 4 years:
1. Boys and Girls Club: Created an interactive 10 week after-school music appreciation program following the CT Standards for Social Studies for grades 1 through 3. Developed teaching materials, trained musicians to teach the curriculum and manage the classroom, as well as provided an overview for the counselors at the center. Over the past four years this program has served over 500 under-priviledged students in the city of Stamford and provided them with a level of music instruction unmatched in the public school system.
2. 4th and 5th grade distric-wide concert: ETM worked with the Stamford Symphony's music director and conductor to develop a comprehensive concert that brought to life the 4th and 5th grade social studies curriculum "American History". The American Experience takes students through the founding of a new nation through the first World War and utilizes music as a snap-shot of the culture of those times. Resource books and CD's were created for all elementary schools and professional development with music teachers from the district was conducted by ETM. Over the past four years close to 12,000 students in the Stamford Public schools have participated it the American Experience Concert
If it wasn't for the innovative thinking and enthusiasim of Education Through Music neither of these programs would have been possible. They are an extra-ordinary resource to arts programs, the city of Stamford and utlimately the students in our public schools.
PS 68 is a school in the Bronx, New York that has a working relationship with ETM for over 13 years. They were very proactive in finding resources to sstaff our school with a variety of string instruyments. As a result of this partnership I am please to announce that our school has a full string orchestra for students in grades 4 and 5. Additionally ETM had provided a piano accompanist for our Gospel Chorus. Our music program has been so successful that several of our students have app;ied to and been accepted into Julliard School of Music. Ongoing professional development is provided for our entire staff. The theories presented have had a dramatic impact on academis subjects. When ouy youngest children are studying non-numerical concepts inclufing in front of, next to etc., they can identify with where instruments are seated in a full orchestra. Learning the value of notes can transform a mathy lesson into a challenging experience. Studying composers and current musicians has motivated the students to write and publish wonderful research projects. It should also be noted that people move into our community just their students have the opportunity to learn a sequential music curriculum.
Education Through Music provides music education to our K - 5 students. In addition, it provides band instruction. The students in our school, which has a 74% poverty level, benefit from music instruction, which they would not otherwise have. The teachers are well trained, and teach music theory and instrumental music in context. Our students have become more well rounded. This program often results in successes for students who are not succeeding academically. The Education Through Music staff has been cooperative and is always looking to match the right artist with our school culture. We are very pleased with ETM!
As the Education Manager at a regional symphony, I am so pleased to have the opportunity to partner and collaborate with Education Through Music on many of our music education programs. Their knowledge, expertise and professionalism is unparallelled. They have helped to create some of our most successful programs. ETM never loses sight of it's goals - using music to educate, broaden and inspire young people. I give them my highest recommendation.
