Desert Sounds is a shoestring operation with a passionate executive director that has grown the program from one school and a few instruments to supplying over 400 low income students with high quality instruments that allow them to participate and perform in school bands of all types in nine school sites and four districts. Outstanding!
I have been so impressed by Desert Sounds’ mission that I have decided to serve on the Board. Desert Sounds serves a critical area that is often neglected – cultivating musical aptitudes in children who have the desires to learn music but lack the economic background to participate. Musical instrument and lessons are expensive to many families who struggle to make ends meet. As a result, music lessons are often one of the first things that is cut when families face budgetary constrains. Dessert Sounds provides an affordable means for these beautiful and talented children to participate in the wonderful world of music creation. I am convinced that children who devote their time and dedication to learn a musical instrument are preparing themselves the disciplines and skills necessary for them to succeed in college and their professions later in their lives. I have seen the organization work, and it is truly a labor of love. Working with very limited resources, Desert Sound delivers beyond its perceived capabilities and makes an resounding impact in the community.
