Since 2010, Wild Love founder, Andrea Maki’s, consistent and devoted attention to the plight of wild horses has been amazing to witness. A 30,000-foot view and her obvious political savvy have created an unlikely coalition of ranchers, environmentalists, wild horse advocates, and government agencies, working in delicate concert to save these majestic animal. She should be the envy of any activist looking to make a real impact. -Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam + The Vitalogy Foundation
I am a dedicated volunteer and want to share my Eagle Rare Life Story about Wild Love Preserve here with Great Nonprofits:
I've known Andrea Maki for 25 years and have witnessed her integrity, dedication, and commitment first-hand. Andrea doesn't waver, she's insistent on honesty and follow-through, and in today's world, it's rare to find a truly altruistic individual. She has inspired me, and countless others, to roll up our sleeves and join her in protecting and preserving wild horses in their indigenous habitats in Idaho and throughout the West.
Since 2010, Andrea's had her art career on hold as she's focused 100% of her time, energy, and resources, on creating an all-inclusive model in wild horse conservation in Idaho, after she promised some Challis wild horses she would do everything she could to help them remain wild and together in their native habitat.
Following her promise, Andrea founded her nonprofit called Wild Love Preserve in 2010 and she's made countless road trips between her home in Seattle and the central Idaho high desert to the Challis wild horses. She's been saving wild horses by bringing opposing stakeholders together for the first time, and because of her efforts, not one Idaho wild horse has been shipped out of state to long-term government facilities, since the Bureau of Land Management's 2012 helicopter roundup of the Challis wild horses.
Kindness, mutual respect, science, and education drive Wild Love Preserve's mission to protect and preserve wild horses in their native habitat and nurture the legacy of respective indigenous ecosystems as an interconnected whole, with regional engagement and benefit. Wild Love Preserve engages public and private lands to address all facets of regional wild horse conservation on home turf in central Idaho: from the 136 Challis, Idaho wild horses WLP adopted following the 2012 Challis BLM helicopter roundup, to their collaborative work on the range and their creation of a permanently protected wild expanse in the heart of Idaho wild horse country.
Andrea's holistic approach to the preservation of our iconic wild mustangs focuses on our collective well-being by bridging divides and bringing stakeholders together to collaboratively address total range health, sustainable ecosystems, co-existence with all wildlife, and livestock where applicable. She's pioneered a model in wild horse preservation that has garnered national attention and serves as a pilot for other wild horse regions.
Boots-on-the-ground work, negotiations, policy change... plus she has been tirelessly fundraising for the last six plus years. Raising full project funding has been a challenge, although not surprising when blazing a new trail, establishing a new system and pilot program. In addition to not having the means to take a salary, she has leveraged all of her personal credit resources to cover WLP wild horse program expenditures, while she's simultaneously saved American taxpayers $7.5 million since 2013.
No matter the odds, Andrea Maki walks her talk. “Too many people are of a moment, then they are off to the next and assume someone else will take care of it. Hypothetical discussions don’t result in change,” she says. “Change only happens with action.”
I was incredibly moved on my 5 day trip to experience the wild horses with my 16 year old grandson. The beauty, gentleness curiosity of these beautiful horses was awe inspiring. I was particularly impressed by Andrea Maki's determination to protect the native horses and her ability to bring together the ranchers, the BLM, and environmentalists. Her approach has already accomplished much of what she has set out to do. How she works with disparate interests is as awe inspiring as being with the horses. This model could be used in other states where there are wild horses and we would be saving the state money as well as preserving these indigenous beings. I hope Wild Love Preserve receives the money it needs so this experiment/model can be used in the future.
I've known Andrea Maki for many years and have witnessed her dedication and comittment first hand. Wild Love is an incredible organization and deserves all the support you can give - they do great work saving and advocating for the wild ones. Great work!!
A fantastic organization with a tremendous mission very near to the heart of this Idahoan.
Wild Love Preserve has given so many beautiful horses a chance to have a normal free life, the horses that are with WIld Love Preserve are free! They have organized themselves into little herds amongst themselves and are peaceful. There is no stress in this herd. I am so grateful to have met Andrea and have had the opportunity to see the progress of where these horses belong. It is a beautiful, awesome organization.
My dream as a child was to rescue wild horses, let them run free on my land, and preserve their natural way of life - a dream that so far hasn't yet manifested - however, two years ago I came across Wild Love Preserve and began following their efforts to rescue a herd of Idaho wild horses. I have since donated to their cause as well as helped to organize fundraisers on their behalf. I truly believe that their program is the way forward for wild horse preservation, and have seen for myself their commitment, love and dedication to Idaho's native wild horses.
Science has proven over and over again that the horse is a native to the North American continent. As such, our native wild mustangs should receive protection from our federal government. What they actually receive is the BLM and Forest Service's plan to eradicate them in favor of the welfare livestock ranchers and the frack miners. As a taxpayer, I am incensed that my tax dollars are being spent to capture and warehouse my native wild mustangs from my public lands. Our native wild mustangs belong on the public land instead of the cattle and sheep that destroy the land. Science has proven that the native wild mustangs benefit the land while the livestock destroy the land. Some of the livestock ranchers don't even own their own land but use my public land as if it were their own. it is time for this to stop. Only 3% of the meat from the welfare livestock ranchers ends up in the U.S. Most of the meat is shipped overseas at a high profit. Leave MY NATIVE wild mustangs on MY public lands.
Great people who step up to help when those who should be protecting OUR NATIVE wild mustangs, the BLM, is hand-in-hand with the special interest groups who want OUR public lands for their own greed. If it weren't for people like this, our iconic wild mustangs would cease to exist. Thank you for what you do for our wild mustangs.
Wild Mustangs need to stay on their own turf. They are being rounded up and are not being treated well by those who round them up. Wild love Preserve really cares for the horse there and need all the support they can get. I love them for what they are doing to help the wilds stay wild.
As an owner of an adopted mustang with first-hand knowledge of the lack of good feed and care given to captured mustangs while being held by the BLM, I wholeheartedly support any group helping the mustangs.
I as a member of the public am so pleased with the work this foundation is doing to protect these beautiful animals . Being from this area I have seen there amazing creatures in thier home environment running free and know personally this is an amazing heritage we have to protect.

Many thanks for sharing your thoughts and support. You are time, kindness and action are deeply appreciated and make a difference in wild lives. Smiles, WLP
I support WLP because I believe this is the prototype for other HMAs to follow. I am relieved and grateful to know that after the BLM's 2012 "gather" not a single wild horse from Challis Idaho's HMA left our state for a life of solitary confinement in government run sedentary corals. Our tax money pays for that million dollar misery too! I would rather see my hard earned money go towards happy, healthy wild horses running around together in a semi wild state, as they now are at WLP. The future of Idaho's wild horses depends on the public's support of this great non profit! The future survival of America's wild horses and burros depend on other communities following Andrea Maki's lead.
as a member of the community only 80 miles from where these horses live, I was amazed that most of us didn't even know these horses existed, so I was shocked into action when I heard about the fatalities of the 2009 roundup, and that the BLM was about to conduct another round in 2012.
Enter one courageous and dedicated soul of Andrea Maki , because of her, this story has a much happier ending, all the displaced animals adopted into one herd again, to regroup on leased land until she procures their forever home within their ancestral range... we all can help by donating to this cause, whatever we can!
God bless you, WLP!!
The WLP is doing a wonderful job saving the lives of our national icon the wild horse. They deserve to be recognized for all the great work they do.
I have been around wild horses, that have been trained for many chores! They are the kindest, gentlest, most caring animal a human can be around!
The rider is guaranteed a safe ride with one of these gentle creatures.
WLP is one of the most wonderful organizations that truly is for the preservation of the most valued treasures of America, the wild horse.
They work extremely hard to get the word out about the plight of the wild horse because of the overreach of the gov't, BLM, Forest Service and ranchers.
These wild horses are classic icons of the true American West.
With WLP's help and foresight, hopefully, America will always have wild horses running free on the land that belongs to them and all of America's animals and people!
WLP is a wonderful organization that is saving the lives of one of our national treasures, our horses! They deserve to be recognized for what they are doing! I had no idea what was happening to our horses until I saw and learned of WLP on Facebook. Spreading awareness of the plight of our horses, mustangs and burros is crucial to their survival. WLP thank you for all you do!!
WLP is an amazing wild horse preserve bringing together advocates, Bureau of Land Management, Ranchers, and environmentalists! What a common-sense approach to wild horse management.
Thank you so much for all your hard work trying to protect and preserve the wild ones!
Wild Love Preserve continues it's mission of preserving the wild horses of America by offering them their very own range to roam. Once adopted from the often cruel government pipeline these Icons of America's West are allowed to live their lives as nature intended. FREE to live and love.
America needs more folks like Andrea Maki who have put it all on the line to offer a better life than that offered by the Federal Government. With that in mind Wild Love receives absolutely no government funding. They rely strictly on donations so won't you help?
Since 1971 the Bureau of Land Management has been tasked with the preservation of our wild horses. A job they have done so poorly yet have refused to change their detrimental, some times catastrophic, tactics.
I guess part of being in government is being in the 'box' and we all know thinking outside the 'box' is frightening to many until Wild Love Preserve and Andrea Maki came along. A new idea emerged which has allowed wild horses to be removed from the BLM's precious Herd Management Area's yet stay in their native land. The land they have roamed for centuries, the land they know as 'Home'.
This is by far the best alternative to the BLM's short and long term "holding" (incarceration) and until we can get a new BLM staff and a Secretary of the Interior who will also think outside the 'box' I hope everyone will support Wild Love in all their efforts.
This is an amazing group, standing up for something not near enough people care about, Or even know about. All through my childhood I dreamed of doing what Wlp does as my life's, and I cannot explain how excruciatingly happy it makes me that there are others who are so passionate about seeing to wild horses welfare. I wish more people would get on board and support wlp. These guys have more courage and guts than most when it comes to standing up for what you believe in, and doing what's right!
I first learned of this organization in August 2010 and I have followed the progress of Wild Love Preserve. I have been impressed, at times taken aback by successes. Initially I heard rumblings from some entrenched in wild horse politics that Ms. Maki didn't know what she was doing. They wrote this organization off because it was a different approach that did not focus on fighting the political battles out front. There are some who tried to make waves, but Ms. Maki stayed true to her course, communicating and negotiating directly with stakeholders. Now I see some of these same individuals following Ms. Maki's lead. As is often the case, a different perspective culminates in change. Initially I was intrigued by Ms. Maki's ideas, however my lasting impression is seeing these ideas in action and witnessing her stamina and follow though. Ms. Maki does not waiver, she is insistent on honesty and follow through. In today's world it is not everyday you find a truly altruistic individual. Wild Love Preserve is a paradigm shift.
What a story! I love the concept of this mass rescue of our magnificent wild horses from the Challis HMA! We the people need to step in and take charge because the government allows them to be taken from their legally designated lands...someday soon the people must evolve and realize that we have the power to make a change. I am proud of this organization and Founder Andrea for having the vision and making it work!
I am proud to be a donor to this amazing organization! Andrea Maki has created a natural environment for wild horses without moving them from their homeland. No longer will they be tortured and abused by the BLM and it's helicopter flying henchmen! Thank you Andrea!
Wild Love Preserve does more with limited funds than any other non-profit I know of. What an amazing job Andrea Maki has done to save our wild horses! Great organization doing so much for a threatened group of animals.
I am proud to be a donor and supporter of Wild Love Preserve. We should all be grateful for the tremendous efforts of Andrea Maki. She saw the vast range of problems in finding a permanent solution to the wild horse population in central Idaho, and with vision, love and determination devoted herself to creating a sustainable solution. Her dedication is an inspiration to all and I wholeheartedly hope support for WLP grows to meet all the challenges ahead.
If you love life, this project extends our oportunity to participate in that celebration.
Wild Love Preserve is about humans experiencing benefit from working together in a cooperative manner in order to preserve the spirit of freedom.
When we use our free will to choose, value and protect the rights of natural freedom, we can, in the process find our own path to living and loving the free spirit of our beautiful natural existence.
It also provides a way to engage with an accessible part of our government and the greater population in an educational manner. Sharing our insigths into other ways of satisfying our responsibilities, while learning from the perspectives of others. This opportunity is neccessasry for each of us to discover the positive motivations of all human endeavors.
Issues in our culture, at this time are exceedingly complex, so a bit of focus on action becomes a healing meditation. Can there be a better way to help heal our planet than to liberate the rejuvinating power of freedom of spirit?
thank you Andrea for putting your energy and enthusiasm into positive ventures for our planet.
West of the Cascades, East of the olympics
Way to go, Andrea. Wish I could see them!but can't so appreciate all the remarks,
WLP is an amazing organization. Andrea has single-handedly made a viable, functioning horse sanctuary out of nothing. She did this with to fill a need to help care for wild horses. The adversity she faced from many factions, both govt. and private were and still are daunting. This is not a problem for Andrea and WLP. They achieved the mission they set out for and continue to provide a wonderful sanctuary for these animals. Truly a model for the rest of the country's wild horse and burro issue.
I've known Andrea for year and am proud to call her my friend. Her commitment to the wild horses of Idaho is inspiring, and the work Wild Love has done to help the wilds is wonderful. I feel that Wild Love is a great example of true charity at work!
Wild Love Preserve and Andrea Maki are unbelievable! Not only are they doing great work and saving Wild Horses, native ecosystems, but also American taxpayers - instead of spending 100's of thousands of dollars for decades warehousing wild horses in "concentration camps" in Oklahoma after forced helicopter roundups and cruel long-haul trucking, Andrea and her merry band of volunteers and community cooperators are turning what some bureaucrats saw as "trash" into a real "treasure".
Eco-tourism based on wild horse viewing is developing from the grass-roots in the economically depressed community of Challis, Idaho that has depended on resource extraction - timber, grazing, mining, water diversions - and is creating a sustainable local economy.
The BLM should take notice and learn - this alternative works... even in a "difficult" county like Custer County, Idaho. Andrea's got factions that had been legal warring for more than 30 years to pull together for one common cause - their wild horse heritage and developing a sustainable, local community.
What a winner!
This is an amazing organization. I want to say thank you for keeping our few Idaho horses we have left in Idaho. And giving my nine year old son something to fight for and strive to accomplish. Keep up the good fight.
As a private citizen and taxpayer, who has called, emailed and sent faxes to the BLM for the past four + years, with absolutely NO response from them, I am delighted that Wild Love Preserve is thinking outside the box! This should be the replacement for all horses and burros in both long and short term holding, the equivalent of horse jail. These horses need to remain on their rightful lands, not be rounded up cruelly by helicopters.
Wild Love Preserve 06/25/2013
In 2010 WLP actually began its efforts going directly to regional cattle ranchers, along with BLM, environmentalists & other stakeholders. We have been working with the community as a whole, bringing all these sides together in a new light. Good, collaborative relations & mutual respect with cattle ranchers has been, and is, essential to our efforts & work in the field. Ranchers have also responded favorably to fact WLP is privately funded, versus being supported by taxpayer dollars.
My husband and I first went out to the Challis area in early October 2012 to photograph the wild horses in the Challis Herd Management Area about 3 weeks before the 2012 Roundup. The horses looked healthy and strong and breathtakingly gorgeous. The stallion of the band looked at me and snorted a little, but then settled in right away and granted us permission to be near. We didn't stay long so as not to bother them. We were ecstatic and grateful for the experience that I would interpret as something elevating and unworldly. We went back the next week and we were in love with the Challis wild horses.
We were very worried about our sanity in witnessing the BLM roundup, but we knew we had to do it for the horses. Enter the gifted Andrea Maki. Although the roundup was devastating and our hearts were broken as we wept, Andrea helped us stay calm by explaining the details and welcoming us with love and kindness into the Wild Love Preserve family. She gave us hope for the horses...and hope for human kind. Our lives have changed permanently because of Andrea and Wild Love Preserve and the amazing, forgiving and spiritual wild horses. Andrea IS Wild Love Preserve and she is giving her life in commitment to save our wild horses with a pilot program to show the whole country that every community can do this. WLP shows that we CAN save our own wild horses in our own backyard. My husband and I will do everything we can to help spread the word and contribute in every way we can for the rest of ours. xoxo -- all our love and thank you, thank you, thank you forever to WLP and their angel Andrea!
Incredible organization with a mission that makes sense on all sides of the issue. Inclusive and community-minded, this non-profit engages everyone in the spirit of preservation. Highly recommend checking out www.wildlovepreserve.org.
Wild Love Preserve, pure and simple, saves horses lives from senseless slaughter. In our world, we are bombarded with a multitude of charities, causes, and special interest groups asking for our help. The uniqueness of WLP is in its simplicity of getting the job done efficiently, with hands in the dirt, and a direct donation-to-need approach. When I have donated, it has felt like I was personally delivering a flake of hay to a mare and her newborn colt. Andrea Maki, the founder of WLP, is a woman of rare integrity and passion dedicated to serving the horse. When I donate, I know in my heart, that every cent is being utilized to its highest and greatest use for the preservation and care of these majestic and peaceful beings, that simply want to live. This country was built on the backs of horses, lets honor them.
I first heard of Wild Love Preserve when the non-profit I volunteer with in Miami was competing in the Pepsi Refresh online contest. Andrea Maki was asking for a large sum to start her organization and I was drawn to her haunting photos of these magnificent proud animals that are our heritage. I voted for her every chance I could. I am amazed at the progress she has made in the last 3 years, and am very glad to see that so many horses have been saved. We must continue to support the preservation of these wonderous animals. They have the right to be on these lands. Although I am too far away to volunteer, I will continue to donate to Wild Love Preserve and share all the triumph with my friends, associates and family. RUN FREE, RUN WILD LOVE FOREVER!
