Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Human Services

Mission: W.O.M.A.N., Inc. supports survivors of domestic violence and their loved ones along their healing journeys, bridging value-rich networks designed to address intersections of violence.

Target demographics: domestic violence survivors, their friends & family

Direct beneficiaries per year: 9,000 callers on our 24/7 support line, 200 people in therapy or support groups, 50 Latina Program participants

Geographic areas served: San Francisco Bay Area

Programs: The W.O.M.A.N., Inc. 24-hour support line offers support via peer counseling, safety planning, and referrals for needed resources. Very often our support line is used as a safe space for survivors to openly share details of their lives including the abuse they survive. As peer counselors, our role is to support them. Many times a survivor just needs someone to listen without judging, to help them better understand their experience, and to validate their feelings and choices. During drop-in support times, survivors of domestic violence, their friends and/or their family members can meet with a trained advocate for in-person support. In this meeting, we provide peer counseling, safety planning, and referrals. Additionally, survivors, their friends and/or family can learn more about W.O.M.A.N., Inc. services. We offer both ongoing individual therapy and family therapy for survivors with their children. Therapy services are offered in English and Spanish and are provided by trained MFT Interns and Trainees who are supervised by a licensed psychotherapist. Low-cost weekly sessions are based on a sliding scale. Led by trained facilitators, our peer support groups offer a safe space for survivors of domestic violence to share their experience with and gain insight from each other. In these groups, survivors are invited to explore their feelings, receive and offer support, and gain important tools needed to heal from the effects of violent relationships. Our groups include practical information about the dynamics of abuse. We often use art and other expressive modalities in our groups. We also have a Latinx Program which offers in-depth case management to Spanish-speaking survivors of domestic violence, and works to support survivors in a culturally appropriate setting. Working collaboratively with a team member, the survivor creates short and long-term goals designed to help overcome the obstacles preventing them from creating a life free of violence. Our Outreach & Education program brings workshops on domestic violence and supporting survivors to the community. We've spoken to school classrooms, sports teams, service providers and other community members. Lastly, our innovative Domestic Violence Information and Referral Center, an online interactive community network involving 34 agencies, provides a safe space for domestic violence service providers to share, network, and access updated information so that to domestic violence survivors.

WOMAN, Inc. is an excellent organization that helps keep women alive and safe. They helped me navigate a complex and painful time. I left my boyfriend after he seriously injured me in 2015. I was shocked, in pain, and afraid after he assaulted me. WOMAN, Inc. helped me move forward to safety and a happier future. In a world that frequently blames and shames victims of domestic violence, the people of WOMAN Inc. are consistently understanding and supportive They educated me about the nature and patterns of domestic violence, which are often not identified in the early stages as abusers are often inconsistent in their behaviors, often kind, sometimes cruel, etc. WOMAN Inc. referred me to the helpful lawyers at the non-profit Restraining Order Clinic. They also referred me to an excellent therapist with expertise in the field of domestic violence. That has been extremely valuable to me. I know now that, although domestic violence is common, many general therapists are ignorant regarding patterns of domestic violence in the early stages and characteristics of clever abusers. You want an expert therapist for these cases and they can be hard to find. WOMAN, Inc is a worthy and valuable organization. My future is bright now and I am grateful for WOMAN, Inc.'s significant assistance in my life during my very challenging times.

I started volunteering for WOMAN, Inc in the Fall of 2011 at a time of transition and uncertainty in my life. I was referred to the organization by a friend who worked there and I thought it sounded like a good-person thing to do to start volunteering there. I didn't think much more about it past that. Upon completing the 40 hour domestic violence training, however, my views had radically changed. I no longer felt uncertain about my future aspirations and knew that I wanted to dedicate my life's work to empowering survivors of domestic violence. WOMAN, Inc was the catalyst for this change of heart and I will never be able to repay them for how much they have taught me throughout these last couple years. They are a truly nurturing, thoughtful and generally awesome group of advocates. Their work is effective and mindful, as is their interactions with the community they serve. I want to be involved with this nonprofit in some way as long as I am able to and really believe that they are deserving of the highest praise and rewards.

WOMAN Inc has helped hundreds of thousands of survivors deal with the trauma endured in an abusive relationship. They don't judge your choices, and are independent of the shelter system. They help focus in on survivors who don't want to enter shelter, can't get into shelter (because of lack of space or just don't fit into the communal living aspect of the programming), or even if you aren't sure if you are ready to leave yet. They are astounding at what they do. Please donate your resources, they are really deserving of your time.

I've been volunteering at WOMAN, Inc for a few months now and it has been the most meaningful and best experience I have ever received in this line of work. The training we received really made me realize how much WOMAN, Inc cares about the people who use their services and also, how much they care about their volunteers. I feel like this agency really goes above and beyond when working with service users and they definitely taught me a lot when it comes to working with survivors of domestic violence. I am so grateful to be apart of this organization.

I've been a volunteer with WOMAN inc. for a few months and it has been a truly transformative experience. The organization approaches domestic violence advocacy through a survivor-defined model, thereby empowering and giving agency to survivors of domestic violence. The organization also offers a tremendous array of services, from free/sliding-scale therapy and peer counseling to staffing a crisis line that helps support survivors and provide them with referrals to other domestic violence agencies and organizations. Because of this amazing work, I wholeheartedly support WOMAn Inc. and its staff/volunteers, and the work that they do!

After graduating from grad school, I was looking to enter the non-profit world. I really wanted to work with programs that dealt with domestic violence, having experienced it myself in a past relationship, and witnessing it among relatives of mine. I learned about WOMAN, Inc and contacted them to become a volunteer and it has been a life changing experience. I began by working as an outreach volunteer, helping to bring awareness about domestic violence through presentations to the community. Then I took WOMAN, Inc's 40 hour domestic violence training to becomes a crisis line counselor. WOMAN, Inc is unique in that they work with all survivors regardless of where they are in the relationship. WOMAN, Inc works with the survivor to help them reach their goals in creating lives free of violence. The staff working there are incredibly dedicated to this cause and you couldn't find a more compassionate and hard-working group.

Woman Inc. has helped (and is still helping) so many women gain strength and resources to better their lives. A lot of times, abused women can not get out their relationships dues to lack of resources. Woman Inc. provides a daily log of which shelters are available all through Bay Area, gives Bart, hotel and food vouchers whenever possible, has a 24 hour Crisis Line.

When I was working on the Crisis Line, I remember doing research for clients without Internet access and even giving resources for out of state callers.

Many clients benefit from their psychotherapy services, to feel better, have more self esteem, prevent getting into abusive relationships again.

Woman Inc. staff really care about what they and their clients. I was honored to be a part of that team and I still use them as a resource.

Volunteering for WOMAN Inc. first as a crisis line volunteer and then as an outreach advocate changed my life. My perspective was forever altered as I went through their training program and then performed the tasks I was trained to do. In training, this organization went above and beyond with regard to the resources made available. Yet they also successfully highlighted the most important information so that it didn't all wash over us in a crushing wave. I ended my training clear on the most important steps I could help a woman make regardless of where she was in her journey and I finished with a more profound understanding of the emotional and economic forces operating against any victim of DV.

Once on the crisis line I learned how the best intentions can go awry. It is important to know where you want the conversation to go, but it is equally important to sit back from that goal and to just listen. The skill of guiding a conversation while respecting the individual paths that each caller must take is a tremendous challenge. WOMAN Inc understands this and is on hand to discuss any and every call their volunteers handle. They support us to support our communities. I truly believe San Francisco is the great city that it is directly because of the work that WOMAN Inc has done and will continue to do for us all.

Working as a volunteer at W.O.M.A.N Inc was one of the most powerful and empowering experiences of my life. What makes W.O.M.A.N Inc so unique and special is their focus on empowerment for women. During the volunteer certification, they explain how when a woman finds herself in a domestic violence situation, she loses her power via the relationship with the batterer. Therefore, the role of any domestic violence organization, should be to allow the woman the choice to regain her power and agency. This means that W.O.M.A.N Inc should act as a tool for women, not another person that tells her what to do and when to do it. To me, this made W.O.M.A.N Inc incredibly revolutionary because it didn't help just eliminate violence, but rather worked to restore agency, dignity and strength.

My experience working as a volunteer on the WOMAN Inc. crisis line was powerful and fulfilling. I went through the organization's rigorous training to become a certified domestic violence counselor, and I found the training engaging , fascinating, and helpful. By the time I started working on the crisis line, I felt prepared. Nervous, but prepared! :)

WOMAN Inc. stretches a service dollar the furthest and with the most compassion of any organization I know. Invariably, if I go somewhere wearing my WOMAN Inc. cap or carrying a WOMAN Inc. notebook, someone approaches me and tells me how they were personally helped by WOMAN Inc and what a great organization it is. It is tragic that the need for WOMAN Inc.'s services is so great, but, as long as it exists, WOMAN Inc. needs to be there.

Woman Inc is a key partner in preventing and ending violence against women. In addition to supporting the needs of San francisco's survivors of domestic violence, Woman Inc frequently supports the crisis hotlines of other domestic violence prevention agencies. Finally, Woman Inc maintains and distributes the daily list of available shelter beds for the entire bay area.
