In 2007, I joined the Villa Musica Community Chorus which a neighbor had been been urging me to do because he was involved and loved it! He said that it was a great opportunity to sing a broad range of repertoire and learn new vocal techniques that improved his output and his enjoyment of choral music. I did join the Villa Musica Community Chorus and soon thereafter, I became a voice student at Villa Musica. As I learned more about the community programming that Villa Musica was providing in libraries and schools in underserved communities in San Diego, I knew I had to see first hand what if any impact there was and on whom. I went to rehearsals and concerts of budding musicians, young and not so young. With their families and teachers, I enjoyed hearing and seeing the progress they were making and the enjoyment and confidence they were gaining. I was hooked on Villa Musica, its school and community programs, its artist/teachers, the enthusiastic and dedicated leadership and the Villa Musica mission. I still am! I have been on numerous committees as well as subsequently serving as the Villa Musica Board Chair for two years. As a result of all of my personal experiences and our observations of the outcomes of the Villa Musica artist/teacher instruction as well as the community programming, my husband and I have committed to a remembrance for Villa Musica in our wills. That says it all.Sharon Popp
