Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Children & Youth Services, Education, Scholarships, Scholarships & Student Financial Aid, Youth Development Programs

Mission: Unbound partners with families living in poverty, empowering them to become self-sufficient and fulfill their desired potential.

Results: Sponsored members partner with Unbound to make program and benefit decisions that help meet their basic needs and develop their potential over the course of their time in the program, sometimes 18 years or more. Outcomes vary by location and may include educational attainment, leadership, improved health and nutrition status, dignified housing, skill development and increased income through livelihood opportunities for families. Through Unbound’s sponsorship program, families have more choices in their lives and are empowered, over time, to confront the challenges of poverty and work toward a better life. Sponsorship helps children achieve a level of education that prepares them to compete with peers for jobs and be educated community members, parents and leaders. At a global level, at the point of leaving the program, 75 percent of sponsored children achieved a level of schooling comparative to or above national peer averages, according to data gathered from 2011-2014. This means that Unbound students — who experience marginalization based on economic, social and geographic factors — were able to compete and excel alongside students from all socioeconomic brackets and areas within their countries. Sponsorship impacts the sponsored child and the entire family. Unbound’s direct work through a personalized benefit model and parent groups means families are able to best allocate resources for their children and direct how the program supports their development as families. As of September 2014, 77 percent of all Unbound sponsored members participated in the program through small groups. These groups provide the space for families to have a voice in the program and be part of a supportive community, addressing two significant components of poverty: lack of choices and isolation. In 2016, a pilot evaluation measuring the empowerment among sponsored mothers in Kampala, Uganda, and Antipolo, Philippines, engaged mothers who are waiting for their children to be sponsored as a comparison group. In this pilot, Unbound sponsored parents in both the Philippines and Uganda displayed a stronger level of ownership of psychological assets — such as happiness, control, goal setting or self-esteem — than the wait-list parents did. There was strong evidence that the Unbound sponsored parents more often took advantage of the opportunity to make choices for themselves, their families and their communities. This evaluation was adapted and rolled out on a global scale in 2017. In a 2013 qualitative evaluation of the Unbound sponsorship and scholarship program in the Philippines, almost all participants had achieved a university degree and many had also completed a graduate- level education. Alumni, on average three years out of the program, were pursuing careers from teaching to nursing and accounting to architectural design. Most were employed on a full-time salary basis.

Target demographics: children, families and elders overcome the challenges of poverty

Direct beneficiaries per year: more than 300,000 children, families and elders with needs such as education, food, health care, clothing, housing improvements and skills training.

Geographic areas served: 18 countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa

Programs: sponsorship of children and elders, youth scholarships, disaster assistance, micro-loans, skills training for parents and more.

Our 'little' girl from Costa Rica is now almost 17. Her family has been able to move from their tin roof house to an apt. In the city. She has graduated from Unbound's program. We will miss her dearly but we have a new little girl from Guatemala. We are so excited to see this little girl grow under Unbound's sponsorship. Wonderful organization.

We started sponsoring a child 2 years ago from Lima, Peru. We send and receive pictures and letters and get updates several times a year. I love this program and feel like they are making a huge difference in the world.

Unbound has been a wonderful organization to work with while sponsoring my child! I signed up about six years ago and have been working with them ever since! They made the process very easy and allowed me to help make a difference in the life of the child I sponsor in Ecuador. Compared to other well known charity organizations, Unbound actually donates close to 100% of the profits to those in need which is not as common as one may think. I get letters from my sponsored friend, Mayerly, and Unbound makes this process especially easy. Since she only speaks Spanish, they translate the letters for me and there is never an issue understanding what we are saying to each other. Sponsoring a child through Unbound has changed my life in ways that are unexplainable. I am given so much joy and have learned so much from having this experience and from making a new friend! If you are looking for an organization that will make an impact on both your life and the life of someone in need, Unbound is the right choice!

My husband and I have sponsored a child through Unbound for 15 years . This winter we had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala for anU nbound experience. We had the thrill of meeting our now young woman and spent time with her Mom and sister. Yuri will graduate from college in Nov. she would not have achieved this life goal without. Inbound. We were so delighted and enlightened by the Awareness trip that we have became ambassadors and will be giving
Presentation.

I highly recommend Unbound!! We have been sponsors for a number of years now, and we have been impressed with the impact our small financial contribution makes in the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. We absolutely love getting letters from our little sponsored boy in the Philippines- he is so charming and funny and brings a smile to our faces. Thank you, Unbound!!

We have sponsored a girl from Guatemala who graduates and went out into the world to work and help support her family.

The girl we support now is in Mexico and 11 years old. We’ve supported her since age 3. We had the privilege of meeting her, her mom and little brother this past October.

No words can express what a wonderful experience this was. To see the gratitude of the people and the love they have for their sponsors is overwhelming. It was the experience of a lifetime for me. We're hoping to go back again next year.

Fourteen years ago, we began sponsoring one 10 year old boy in the Philippines. He completed college and became a math teacher. We are so proud of him because with a little assistance from us through Unbound, and his own perseverance, he was able to achieve one of his goals. Now we sponsor three girls in the Philippines, one in Guatemala, and one in the Dominican Republic. Two years ago we took an Unbound Awareness Trip to the Philippines. We were in awe of the work that Unbound does with the families and communities they serve. We knew Unbound was an outstanding nonprofit, but after seeing how their organization is run firsthand, we sing their praises every chance we get. If you want to help a child reach his potential, we highly recommend partnering with Unbound.

I went on an awareness trip last year and it has changed my life. I got to see how the mothers group ran and it was great. When I came home I sponsored a child and can’t wait to meet her.

We have been sponsoring for many years. Seeing how those we sponsor get an education and are able to help their families because of sponsors is very rewarding. The letters we receive are full of love and appreciation. The pictures and updates on their education makes us feel like we are part of their family. We like being able to send e-letters and getting letters from our sponsored children about their own family.

Unbound's mission is to walk with the poor and marginalized of the world.

It is a wonderful experience and opportunity to be a part of. Live life with an open hand rather than a closed fist. You will be blessed with the rewards.

I have traveled to Guatemala with Unbound and visited Julio. The joy I receive for contributing to Unbound and seeing Julio is without words.

Leave a legacy.

What a beautiful ministry. Although I do not stay in close contact with my sponsored child, her letters and memory bring me to tears. We are all in need and Unbound bridges the gap between those that lack physical goods with those that lack much more. I will forever be grateful for their work.

I traveled to Nicaragua with Unbound to visit my sponsored friend. I'd worked and traveled with other non-profits but this organization blew me away. They were so organized and serve the entire community the sponsored friends are part of?

I've been a donor for over 12 years, and I have an uncle who worked for the organization for longer than that. This is truly a nonprofit that values who they serve and those who make the service possible.
