I had been looking for my heart horse for almost 8 years! I posted on Facebook, searched various groups, searched equine sale sites, etc. recently I made a post again trying to find my Dixie. I had several people recommend that I make a report on NetPosse and I did. TWO days later I got a call from a lady who was friends with Dixies owners. I was able to work out plans with the owners and I was able to get Dixie back FINALLY after almost 8 years! My only regret is that I didn’t make a report sooner. I am so thankful for NetPosse! Debi and Jennifer both are such loving, kind hearted people. They answered my questions and you can tell they really care. I’m so thankful for NetPosse!
Stolen horse international and all the volunteers at net posse have worked tirelessly to help victims try to get justice served for the theft by deception of over 50 horses. Victims in five states would never have known what happened to their horses without the flyers being posted online of this criminal posing as a nice young student offering a good home for our horses when we needed to rehome them. Thanks to their efforts at least she has been arrested in one state and has to answer to a judge for her deception. And no doubt that has saved the life of many more horses that she would have gotten from unsuspecting people that now know her name! Thanks netposse
I've been volunteering with this organization for a relatively short time. It's obvious that they are a dedicated group. They help with listing missing and found animals (and equipment) and have staff that scour auction and feedlot pages to help search. They also assist with recovery of lost pets from natural disasters.
The volunteers with Stolen Horse International have gone above and beyond to help me and the other victims of a notorious horse scammer. Though the case is not closed and we are still looking for horses, I know this wonderful group of people is working and there for us in an effort to recover them. I am thankful for all they have done!
My horse became a part of the vet student case after I sold him to Fallon Blackwood in 2015. Although I thought he was going to a good home, he likely ended up in slaughter. I want to thank Netposse though for building a case for my horse as well as many others against Fallon and trying their hardest to obtain justice for every horse she took.
IN February 2018 realized my horse Birdman and myself were the victims of a fraudulent deceptive scam by a 'vet.student. I immediately contacted Stolen Horse International, Net Posse and they helped tirelessly to spread the word and they spent so much time and energy helping myself and others try to recover our horses and also to expose a terrible person that was taking horses and sending them to auctions and kill buyers. It has been quite an ordeal but I am forever grateful for all the hard work and endless dedication from Stolen Horse International! Thank you
Pie, my filly at the time and 3 of our other horses at the farm were let out by some teens. They wandered over to another adjacent farm and a good samaritan rounded them up and alerted the real estate agent who was selling that farm. The caretaker of the horses was on vacation so it was not noticed right away they were missing from the pasture. Since I boarded my horses, it was a week or so before notified. Meanwhile the real estate agent did not contact the authorities nor animal control but had the horses removed from the property for sale and they crossed state lines from Maryland to Pennsylvania. Meanwhile we are looking and searching for our horses in Mount Airy, Maryland and even sent drones up to find them. I had contacted Stolen Horse International and while its work to accumulate all the documents and pictures and post the flyers...it is so worth it. I was lucky to recover Pie. The buckskin and April were sold to New Holland Auction where they were knowingly bought by a kill buyer and shipped before we could recover. Georgia was knowingly sold on Dream Horse and the new owners contacted. Stolen Horse International saved my Pie! And I will always remember the police officer who met me who said Pie was a horse that Jimmy Steward rode in his movies. Perfectly Intelligent Equine was what the name meant! I rescued so many horses in my life and never thought I would ever have to rescue my own. It shattered me and for a long while after I had to heal from the loss of faith in people who I thought had better morals to do the right thing. The realtor serves on a board for a horse agency. The person who picked them up and sold them all with not a care is member of an organization in Pennsylvania and wanted to run as a member of the board. April belonged to a eight year old boy. To this day he does not ride on the farm and will forever be impacted on the loss of his horse. Even when a friend of mine so graceously offered him a horse for his loss. I cry to think what is happening. How someone can show up at an auction with no proof of ownership and sell a beloved animal you own. How horses can be shipped to slaughter and the 'Kill Buyer" Business man who fills out USDA papers and profits supported by our government shipping to Canada and Mexico. The person who had Pie saw the fliers but did nothing to contact myself and while they put pictures up of their new Filly so proudly took them down as soon as they saw the flyers. I had to show up with the police to recover my horse. How could you knowingly have someones horse and not even contact them?????? I offered REWARDS of money even to anonymously drop off the horses back to their rightful place. Please don't think you can do this on your own, that people will do the right thing when you think they will....if you have a new horse that you have bought from auction....do you really know its history???? There is someone that may own that horse who is looking so hard....but they may be several states away from you...Research ask questions and look to Stolen International because one day you may see a picture of a horse in your next door neighbors field. I was very thankful for the phone calls of people who did do the right thing and who did make the call to Stolen Horse International.
Stolen Horse International, Inc. aka NetPosse.com was a key player in helping to bring Bohdi & Finn home safely. Bohdi was about to be slaughtered when my Friends Holly and Till rescued her, soon after they discovered Bohdi was actually pregnant! SHI Inc. with their professional expertise, yet alone compassionate and positive words throughout the process helped Holly and Till immensely. They are a FANTASTIC non-profit, they helped them create the FB group, organize resources for searching such as the drones operators/search parties/etc, created the flyer and circulated out press releases to the local news outlets.
Our slaughter horse rescue mare, Bohdi, and her 1 month (surprise) old foal, Finnegan, broke out of our paddocks on Saturday 7/21. It was unclear if it was a staged break out or that the horses spooked, but their trail ended in our front yard. My wife and I searched high and low with local neighbors, friends and family, but were in a panic that we couldn't find them within a few hours. We posted on local lost and found pet sites and were referred to SHI as a great resource. We filed the report and within minutes, I was on the phone with Pam who was circulating out flyers, press releases and general information to not only their network, but local news sources. They created us a great Facebook group and tried to help align us with resources to do drone searches, create search parties etc. It took us over 48 hours, but luckily on Monday morning, we received a phone call from a local woman saying she had spotted them at a local farm. I was able to go over, walk up to Bohdi and put on a halter and lead her home. SHI assisted every step of the way with resources, positive words, compassion and dedication to reuniting our horses with us. After helping us assist in finding them, they also provided the ability to get microchips done through them to help prevent this in the future. We are thoroughly impressed and grateful for all of their hard work and for helping in returning our babies to us.
Back in 2010 we rehomed 2 of our horse to a therapy group that works with children that have issues. We had a verbal agreement that should the horses not work out for any reason we would buy them back. We checked in from time to time just keeping in touch. We were told that everything was fine. In 2013 we found out the therapy group rehomed One of the horses (Lulu ) just weeks before I checked in again. I was crushed. This was not a horse that wasn't loved. We would have bought her back in a heart beat. We looked for Lulu and had no luck. We looked on and off until the summer of 2016. Then after much dig and searching we stumbled on to a lady that had Lulu for a short time. Then rehomed Lulu again. The women could not recall who she gave Lulu to. It ranged from a Grandmother with 4 or 6 Grandkids to a man in his fifties that need Lulu to help keep his yard eaten down. We only wanted to know she was safe and Well. We didnt want to take her from a safe and loving home. Just to let whom ever had her that again we would buy her back if she was ever in need of a home. We where at a total loss as of what to do next. We reached out to Stolen Horse International. We have only just begun with them but, for the first time in the years we have help looking! The support is so amazing! I'm able to talk with someone that understands why I can't just give up and walk way. Lulu was a love horse. We showed her. She did halter and obstacle classes. She loved people. That's why when we had 2 older horses that need a lot of time do to health issues we rehomed Lulu and her mother. We didn't have the exact time for them that they deserved. They where perfect therapy horses. This amazing group is not only helping look for Lulu they provide me with emotional support. Something I didn't realize how badly I was needing. Please pick Stolen Horse International. They are amazing.
My horse was stolen from the pasture and a friend suggested that I go onto Stolen Horse International (netposse.com) online right away for help. I consider myself a fairly savvy horseperson: I had ID photos of my horse from all angles, kept paperwork handy such as proof of ownership and registration papers, and had my horse microchipped. But getting that call that my horse was gone is something I will never forget… my first thought was “what do I do next?” There was so much to do and it was hard to think straight! SHI was incredible – with the pictures I had they created a flyer and posted it on social media (and kept updating it from missing to stolen as new information came up), and posted notices on the internet when the story made the news… and that was just for starters! But most of all, it was the calm advice and helpful information and resources from people who know what to do next that helped me to stay focused. Fortunately, my horse was returned after 2 days, and I cannot thank SHI enough for all of their help. It is a wonderful organization with amazing people!
Hey y'all! My name is Katie, and I'm from loudon county TN. My beloved horse Susie went missing in the Cherokee Nationa Forrrest for 5 days!! She was spooked and I was thrown and injured in the accident. Not a trace of her afterwards. She just kept going full blast ! I was beside my self and devastated. I cried every day all day. Then stolen and lost horse international contacted me to work with me. The got me on EVERY major news outlet, news paper, Facebook stories, you name it they done it. Well after 5 long days lost in the NATIONAL Forrest she was found!!! By a man named bobby Cornett! My 1,000 saddle still on as well! I'm just so thankful for stolen horse international !! I can't ever thank them enough for the love, media coverage, support, and everything else they have done !!! PLEASE donate!! It goes to a wonderful cause !!! Thank you !!! Much love , Katie webb from east TN
Losing a horse is more painful than you can imagine. Wondering where the horse is and what is happening to him and if he is eating or starving or if he has been sent to a slaughter plant just takes over your thoughts. This organization was founded by victims who get this. There are many volunteers that are victims. I donate my time by sharing. I donate more so that they will continue to be here to help me bring my boy home. I hope you will too. It is a very very worthwhile charity.
I"ve been watching Stolen Horse International since it started. I saw one of the Idaho's alerts back in the 90's when the founder's own horse was stolen. They did find their horse a year later and instead of walking away they decided to help others like them. And boy have they done that! This nonprofit is for real. It not only has great services for their victims but it provides a great educational program as a public service. Kudos to the founders and all of the volunteers that have brought so many horses home. I donate. Please do the same and help then continue what Idaho started.
My horse was sold and the woman refused to pay, give him back, or tell me where he was. SHI was so wonderful to work with and so helpful throughout the process of reporting, filing and keeping track of everything!
This organization is amazing!!! I do not know how they do all they do with an all volunteer base, and they have been doing it for 20 years. Look at all they have accomplished on their website and Facebook pages. It is amazing to see how many horses are missing. It is amazing to see the updates when they are recovered. I love it! Who else in the world does what they do? Nobody. I donate every month through their $5 a Month program. Of course I do more than $5 but if everyone were to donate just that much a month you'd help them so much. Just go to the website and click on Donate. You will see so many ways to help them out like I do. Let's keep them doing what they do best, helping victims everyone else forgets.
My sassy gray aged mare named Doll was stolen from her pasture in the dark in Alabama. I posted an add with a flyer to find her on my own. A nice person from Stolen Horse iInternational offered to help. I joined their group and the staff were very supportive and are currently looking for my beloved Sassy aged gray mare Doll. I get folks in the posse texting me pictures of sassy aged gray mares from time to time those pictures keep my hopes up that someday we will find her and get her home. If a posse member goes to a horse event or horse sale most posse members review the stolen and lost horse adds before they go and if they see a horse that may match they text photos of that horse to the member searching for their horse. There is a healthy reward for Doll's return. Not a day goes by that I don't think of my beloved mare and I feel that Stolen Horse International is still on the look out for Doll and will be until we find her. Virginia 256-255-9229
I am so grateful to Stolen Horse International for all the hard work, dedication, compassion, selflessness, love and determination they give to EVERY one of their cases. My mini pony, Mr. Sam BoJangles, was stolen 1 week after he came to us. Within moments of contacting netposse.com there were posts, fliers, messages, articles, a whole community of volunteers rose up and began doing what they do best- spreading the word, advocating, networking, searching, fighting. It was incredible. I was one of the "fortunate ones". I was "lucky". My boy was found and recovered within 12 hours of knowing he was gone. We all rejoiced. An amazing article was written about our story. People i don't know personally have approached me in the store and asked how Sam is and tell us they're so happy He's home. It has been just over a year since our boy was recovered. I am ever so grateful every single day for my friends at Stolen Horse International. Thank you for being the voice and the strength for so many.
Years back. My mother thought she could trust a friend. But that trust was quickly betrayed and her Filly was sold off without a trace. For years we fought desperately to find her. Then i found Stolen Horse International. Quickly they began working on my cold case. My case worker kept me up to date with every new development. A year later, We got her back. She will never leave our farm again.
If i ever have a horse taken from me again... Stolen Horse International will be the first to know.
This organization is one of the only ones I have seen for missing horses. It is a valuable tool to our equine world. I have seen many happy reunions through this wonderful organizations. With Social Media they can reach out to many areas of the world. I feel strongly that this organization is extremely beneficial and important in today's equine society. I support their endeavors wholeheartedly. Keep up the good work.
I love what netposse does and why they do what they do, there are many horses returned because of their hard work and constant attention to finding stolen and missing horses and other livestock and small animals too. God forbid I should ever need them, I will go there first after notifying the police!
Review from Guidestar
I am a case manager volunteer, it is extremely gratifying when we all work together to find and return these wonderful animals to their rightful owners. Very professional and always working to help in times of need.
I remember hearing about stolen horse international about 15 years ago and was very impressed. Since hearing about them I had hoped I would some day be able to help in some small way to bring the Horses home. This wish was granted last year when I was accepted as a volunteer. This is a great organization.
After losing a horse, years before this service was available, I am now avid about sharing their information. They are bringing home horses and I love that there is someone trying to help!
Unique services for horse/livestock owners-fantastic group of people to work with-needs more financial support from public
My horse went missing while at a barrel race, thank you to Netposse & it's wonderful volunteers because my horse was found the next morning after Netposse reached out to help me. Wonderful organization & people.
Nikki and her mom were great to work with and they came to us right away. That really makes a huge difference when trying to recover a stolen or missing horse. We can move heaven and earth if we know where to look-and if people come to us quickly enough, we have a very good chance of finding that horse BEFORE the thief can transport them somewhere else. It is always thrilling to get a horse back to an owner-doesn't matter the length of time involved. Thank you, Nikki for letting us help you find him!
I am a volunteer case manager for Texas. What a wonderful organization I have the privilege of being a part of. Though NetPosse I have learned so much. We feel the saddness with our victims when their horse's are lost are stolen. The tools we have and knowledge our resources is a blessing. From 18 years of experience from the founder of NetPosse. We are like no other organisation out there.
I thank SHI aka NetPosse is a wonderful organization. I have had the privilege of working with NetPosse as a CM for Texas.
I am a "horse lover," since I was a very young girl. Until I moved to North Carolina, I was totally unaware of the amount of horse theft that exists. And now with slaughter being a lucrative business, I am appalled to see just how many beloved horses are stolen or taken without permission then dropped off at auctions that are frequented by "kill buyers." Without SHI/NetPosse, a far greater number of missing horses would never be located. Whenever I see someone posting that their horse has gone missing, my first suggestion is file a report with NetPosse. Yes, there is a small fee involved to file the report but the reward of finding your beloved animal, or finding out that a terrible tragedy befell him/her, is well worth the small expense. One has closure either way and can move on with their lives with that knowledge. Please think of supporting SHI/NetPosse whenever you are able - every dollar helps. Our gratitude is always for Debi Metcalfe and Idaho - without either this wonderful organization would not exist. God bless.
Stolen Horse International is doing a wonderful job trying to help locate my stolen mini. My stolen mini is near or across the Mexican border. They made
a flyer in Spanish to be distributed across the border.
I am privileged to be a volunteer with Stolen Horse International. It’s a great experience to be a part of such a unique organization and work with so many great, like-minded people. No one else does what we do, the way we do it, to help bring missing horses home. Thank you Debi Metcalf for working so hard for so long to keep this going.
You think it will never happen to you. How can a 1000+ lb animal that you legally own, that you have spent precious time with and cared for, simply be taken away from you? I had a verbal agreement with a friend to keep my horses on his property. My truck and horse trailer was used quite often in his business and I helped with other parts of his business so it was all very mutual at the time. But things change, friendships change and friendships end, leaving our animals vulnerable. That’s what happened to me.
I purchased my Peruvian Paso Mare in 2009. I saw her for the last time June 1, 2012. This all happened when I was in the middle of moving to a new location. I eventually moved to another state due to family reasons. All the while I was trying to keep tabs on where my horse was, is she still there, can anyone verify it, etc. Certified letters went unsigned for, threat of small claims court went unanswered. I had no idea where to turn for help. Who is going to care about my horse? And, with only a verbal agreement in place, who legally is going to want to help me? Then, one day in May of 2014, I decided to go online and search for help. I had never heard of NetPosse.com before. But the first thing I saw online was the Stolen Horse International aka NetPosse.com website, founder Debi Metcalf. I read Debi’s story about her own experience of her horse Idaho being stolen and how she didn’t give up searching for him until he made it back home. So, I dialed her number, expecting to hear a voice mailbox that would prompt me to leave a message that would probably never be returned. But Debi answered the phone on my first call. If I stopped right there with this story, it would be enough to show the value that this group places on helping others who have lost or stolen horses. But there’s more. Debi listened to my entire story and she told me, legally, what needed to take place to get the ball rolling in getting my horse back. All along the way, whether by phone, text messages or Facebook Messenger, Debi and other volunteers have always been available. One night I woke up about 4 am and sent her a FB Message hoping she would read it in the morning or later in the day. She immediately messaged me back. She was already up (or had been up most of the night) working on another case. That is who Debi Metcalf is.
My horse had been taken by someone who hauls horses for a living so, honestly my fear was, she could easily be anywhere in the country and I may never see her again. But on June 2, 2015, I won a Motion in court for the return of my horse. And on June 24, 2015, I saw my horse again for the first time in 3 years. Now she is back home with me.
NetPosse.com is run by people who have already been through what you are going through. They provide help, guidance and assistance in recovering lost or stolen horses. They also work hard to educate others about the prevalence of equine theft and loss prevention. Here’s to a wonderful group of people. Thank you for being there when I needed you!
I have been a volunteer of SHI for three years. There is no other organization that offers the types of service we offer. Educating horse owners before theft and assisting horse owners if their horse has gone missing by either a civil matter or by theft. Debi Metcalfe is truly an expert in this field. When the Metcalfe's horse Idaho was stolen from her pasture, Debi did not have Stolen Horse International to run to. Seeing the need through their own experience brought about this wonderful organization.
I have volunteered with Stolen Horse International, Inc., aka NetPosse.com, since the early 2000s. In 2005, I began working directly with the founder, Debi Metcalfe, to process cases for victims. For more than a decade, I have seen this organization grow and develop in educational programs for horse owners and assistance in the recovery of countless missing horses. There is no monetary compensation or normal hours. All of the volunteers, led by Debi, do what they do because they care about these horses and the people who love them. No other nonprofit does what NetPosse does or has accomplished so much.
Very caring group of people that work tirelessly to reunite owners with their equines.
Stolen Horses International has been my guardian angel through a very difficult time. Debi Metcalf and everyone thats works with her in this wonderful organization has been supportive, caring, educational and above and beyond helpful. I can't begin to express my gratitude towards them. I am so thankful i found them and owe so much to them. They never give up on their search!!!!
They are a very caring group of people that know how to get it done. Very professional.
I feel like I'm a part of an awesome group of volunteers. Everyone is so kind and caring. Everyday they work behind the scenes to help bring the horses back home. It's amazing to see what is done day and night, not for the praises, but to help someone.
I have never been a part of a more caring group of people. The things others say about them show me how wonderful they are outside of my own opinion. Every volunteer has been working hard on sharing the reports, answering questions and comparing pictures. I don't know of a more dedicated team. I'm proud of them.
I have been involved as a Case Manager and Director of Volunteer Services for a little less than a year. I have always had a passion in the equine world as well as a people person so I love being able to help our victims locate their stolen or missing horse(s) so they can reunite.
Unfortunately, I had 5 horses taken out of pasture this month. Stolen Horse International has a wonderful group of volunteers...they put their heart and soul into what they do. If anyone ever has horses lost, missing, or stolen...Stolen Horse International aka Netposse is the place to go other than Law Enforcement. They sincerely care for the families and horses involved. And to give you a update… All 5 horses were recovered and are home. Last one came home this past weekend. I will always recommend Stolen Horse International to anyone who has a missing or stolen horse. I am forever grateful to SHI. As Debi (the founder of Stolen Horse International) says… "Never underestimate the power of one"
I want everyone to know how wonderful this group is!!!! I have known Debi personally for a number of years and I know how sincere she is and that her Heart is always in her work. I can remember when she was sick herself but still never dropped the ball. She has put her life into helping people learn how to keep their Beautiful Babies safe. She and her husband both are always there to help, a lot of times putting their own life aside ( family ) She is an inspiration. I have been with her when she has tried to educate people and I myself praise her often. She is a wonderful woman and her organization is so important to all in the Horse world. I am blessed to have such a friend.
Stolen Horse International is the first thing that comes to mind if a horse comes up stolen or missing. Their professionalism, commitment, care and help is second to none. The people truly care and are there every step of the way. Their network of volunteers is outstanding. They offer advice, support and education and are there every step of the way.
While I have fortunately never had to use Stolen Horse International, Inc., the work that they do and the commitment to the cause at hand is unwavering. They help so many people who have had their horse stolen or simply get loose and disappear, and they do with passion not only for the horse but the owner as well. The private eye's in the equine world! I cannot sing enough praise about this organization!
This group was fabulous when my horse was missing. They kept in contact with me, helped keep me sane., produced flyers and social media posts and stayed with me until he was found! I would recommend Stolen Horse international to anyone that has a missing horse.
I found Stolen Horse International in 2009 when my mare, Sunshine, was stolen from her pasture by roofers. I never found my horse but had many people contact me regarding her because of Stolen Horse's website. Recently, a volunteer for Stolen Horse International contacted me and said they were going to have another look at what happened to Sunshine. A totally volunteer organization that never forgets and gives hope to those of us who have lost something precious. I can not thank them enough!
I had 10 horses stolen and had no clue on how to go about trying to get them back. I received a phone call from stolen horse international. They walked me through everything. They have worked and are still working really hard to help me get them back. They have been there every minute of the way. Through the ups and downs. I couldn't have done it without Stolen Horse International!!
Anytime anyone mentions a horse has been stolen or lost, the first recommendation I give is to contact Netposse.com/Stolen Horse international Inc. This organization truly works hard to recover lost/stolen horses worldwide. As a volunteer I was able to personally get to know and spend quality time with the founders and you could not find anymore dedicated individuals to ensuring a beloved part of a family is returned safe and sound. They are well organized, well informed, extremely knowledgable and totally committed and dedicated to this organization. Any assistance they are able to receive benefits all horse owners worldwide.
Stolen Horse International helps recover a lot of horses! I have faith in then-- so much so that I had my beloved mustang, Annie, microchipped. I have ID tags for all my horses and donkeys. They do great work! I hope I never need them, but if I do, I know they will be there.
Have followed stolen horse now for many years I have watched the many good outcomes that they have made happen from Opie to many more I know that if I had a missing equine they would be the first call I made Debi Metcalf has poured her heart and soul into this and I will stand and say this organization deserves to be recognized for all they do. I train equine a and whenever a new one comes I always check the site to be sure its not listed
I have followed the activities of 'Stolen Horse International' for several years. I have never observed any deceit or unethical conduct in their efforts to assist the owners of stolen horses, or in any other type of activity. This nonprofit is exactly what horses and horse owners need - people who really care about stolen horses... because this happened to them... and they decided to do something to help stop the horse thieves... personally, I'd fetch my cowboy rope and take those bums to the nearest tree for them to swing for awhile... but the Stolen Horse folks leave that to 'John Law.'
SHI is run by a core team of caring individuals that sacrifice their free time to help those who have suffered loss. Without the care and dedication of SHI there would be not centralized organization sharing and helping those that need it recover lost Equines, Animals, Tack and more. I have had dealings with them now for 5 years and recognize the hard work they put into helping!
I live in Oklahoma and had 10 horses stollen from me. I didn't know where to go,who to talk to, or even where to start. We had posted it on Facebook but I didn't know what else to do.
Then I got a phone call from Debi Bailey Metcalfe. I was a wreck and she walked me through everything. Debi and a volunteer, Jana Bailey, have been there by my side step by step. They walked me through what to do on the recovery of the only horse we have gotten back so fare. They help my weed through every lead we get. They have helped me through all the hard times, and believe me there are a lot. They help me not give up hope on finding the other 9 of my horses. There is NO way I could do this alone. Stolen Horse International has so many resources that I wouldn't ever have had.
I want to thank Stolen Horse international for everything they do. I recommend them to any body that has had a horse stolen or is missing. They are just amazing people!
This past week I attended a seminar in Winston Salem, NC hosted by a NC nonprofit where the founder of NetPosse/SHI was the speaker. I attended not because I own a horse, but because I do own animals. I have always believed more needs to be done to protect our animals, they are family to most of us. I have to say I was in for a very real eye-opening experience. I had no idea so many horses and farm animals are stolen and that much of the time, it involves friends, neighbors and family, for one purpose, money. They plan it, then it's easy. It can be one person, it can be many involved. Sadly, they aren't concerned with the value of the animals, many go to slaughter or are sold, over and over, just for the profit in their pockets. They will even change the appearance of the animal if possible. I was interested as a friend of mine had her horse stolen and it took nearly a year to recover her. There is no regard for the animals or owners, they are left with scars that never go away. The legal system rarely works your side. Ownership papers, photo's, do not always help. You need legal and binding contracts, and even those can fail. It can come down to, my word against your word type of thing. You need microchips and other forms of identification, and they may not be enough. You need photo's of every marking possible on your animal, but the thief can have the same evidence. You need an organization that through the media, sharing of pictures, all information and posters to even have a prayer of hope. I asked when the thief is caught what sort of punishment can be expected, a slap on the wrist, more often than not. Hard to believe isn't it. One horse that had been missing for 10 years was recently recovered, they don't give up on you. I have been to seminars where I was quickly bored, not this time. The speaker knew what she needed to get out there, the meeting went well over the time allowed. It was truly interesting and shocking at the same time. Use this organization, it is nonprofit and interested in helping you recover your horse.
I am an animal advocate and have been involved with many issues regarding equines. This group is one I keep an eye on. They are such a valuable tool when checking cases that seem to have something just a little odd to them. This group not only educates others, they make a difference for so many horses and owners by keeping up with everyday info and other pieces of information I sometimes see on FB. They are all business and I appreciate that!
STI, is probably one of the best organizations out there and is the only one I know of which actively helps horse owners who's horses have turned up missing and or stolen. Because of the network they have been able to establish throughout the country and internationally, people from all walks of life, horse people, pro and or anti slaughter come together to help owners find their missing and or stolen horses.
So often the police dismiss stolen horse complaints as civil or unimportant, when to the horse owner, they are of the utmost importance to the owner. They are a beloved pet, companion, family member, and or working partner. Thank you SHI for all the hard work you do to help owners find their horses......
I've been following them for awhile now, and seen them take action day and night trying to help people in their darkest scariest moments of losing their four legged fur babies. Always very nice people, and try their hardest to reunite animals with their owners. I found a gelding on my farm one day and their tech team helped me set up the ad to try to find the owners, took only one day and he was back home! I ALWAYS recommend people in my FB groups to them!
I am deeply concerned about the ethics and intentions of this organization.
Many horses are stolen because thieves see horse slaughter as a quick way to make a buck and dispose of the evidence. And yet this organization refuses to take an official position on the sordid, barbaric industry of horse slaughter? Is it because it increases the need for their services?
I am equally dumbfounded by the recent efforts of Stolen Horse International in spreading propaganda from animal abuse industries, including SeaWorld, Ringling Brother Circus, and HumaneWatch, a nefarious astroturf group for industries that profit from animal cruelty.
I would urge people to ask the organization why they are spreading lies to attack other groups doing good work for animals - especially horses - and also to cease support of SHI.
We at SHI purposely do not take a +/- on horse slaughter issues either way. We do not wish to enter that fray at all. We choose to pick our battles as our resources are finite and limited. There are many who do fight that battle and they are most welcome to do so. As to the slanderous statement that we do not because it increases the need for our services, that would hardly benefit us in any way. We are a 502(c)(3) staffed totally by volunteers. We have no salaries. We make no profits. Any and all income is plowed right back into the business overhead. This makes that charge clearly ludicrous in the extreme. We have never spread the 'propaganda' from any of the animal abuse industries-horse, dog, cat, or any other. We simply do not do so. It is not in our mission. If this writer would care to share these instances with us, we would be happy to discuss them with them. We do not believe them to be ours at all. We think this person has SHI confused with someone else. Since this person has not seen fit to bring these issues to us directly, but has posted this in such a public forum in an effort to slander our good name and reputation, we would simply like to ask that the reader consider our record and reputation over the past years from 1998 as the innovative group in the field. No other group does what SHI does in the entire world still (2015). That's over 16 years of people trusting and relying on what we have to offer. We do what we say we will do. Our mission is to educate horse owners in how to better secure their horses, farms, barns, homes, and trailers to prevent theft in the first place, and secondly, to provide counseling and resources to the horse owner who has a lost, missing, or stolen horse. That is our mission. Not to save every horse on trailers going across the borders-as much as we would personally like to do so. Thank you for allowing the rebuttal. It is very kind of greatnontprofits.org to do so. Ellen Wright, Director of Operations Stolen Horse International-USA
Through watching the volunteers at Netposse over the years I have observed a caring compassionate organization committed to the return of stolen/missing horses to their owners.
This organization has been an important link in the horse community for many years. They have helped countless people to recover their stolen or lost horses.. and given hope to those who are still searching. They educate the public as to steps that can be taken to protect their horses and on what to do if they are in this situation.
From the moment I contacted them, they were so helpful. They gave me ideas of places to search and continue to encourage me that my horse will be found!! I pray they are right but with their help I do believe that day will come!!!
I am the Network Coordinator for Stolen Horse International, aka NetPosse.com . I have been a volunteer of SHI’s since about 2003 when I realized just how big of a problem theft really was in the horse industry. Unfortunately I came to realize just how all those victims really felt when I too became one myself. You can read about my horses story here: http://www.netposse.com/HomeForTheHolidays.htm Stolen Horse International, Inc. (SHI or NetPosse) brings attention to a major crime against equine owners, theft. The mission of Stolen Horse International, Inc. is to provide a comprehensive theft awareness program to all facets of the equine industry and offer educational opportunities for equine enthusiasts of all types and across all disciplines: SHI’s goals are:
To establish a global resource to aid in the search for:
Owners of found equine
To promote increased involvement through equestrian organizations.
To build an international network, NetPosse, to disseminate images and information missing and stolen equine through the alerts system.
To provide education opportunities to improve public awareness on equine theft and identification methods through seminars, presentations and exhibits.
To provide resources and information to the law enforcement community.
As Debi (founder of SHI) always says "Never underestimate the power of one!"
Great Organization. Helps with making sure the word gets out regarding, lost/stolen horses, livestock, trailers and equipment. The network is vast and far reaching.
I am always astounded by the great lengths that volunteers for Stolen Horse International Inc will go to help horse owners whose horses are missing or have been stolen. They do an amazing job of networking for the horses and scouring the horse for sale advertising websites to see if they can locate a horse. They genuinely care for the families and horses involved. Their website is easy to read and access and has enough pictures to make identification easy. They also do a wonderful job with educating owners on what they can do to protect their horses and offer an astounding amount of resources for those owners who wish to follow their recommendations. I will always recommend Stolen Horse International to anyone who has a missing or stolen horse. Thank you SHI for always being there for those in need!
We got Opie he was about 10 months old. He was our sweet boy....he was stolen when he was about 3 - that was in 2003. He was returned home Aug 2012! Opie was registered both Pinto and American Saddlebred. That could have easily been checked. He was reported missing all over. There were so many ways for him to be "found" but the ONLY thing that worked was STOLEN HORSE INTERNATIONAL. If there was a "one stop shop" as I call it. ONE place that Police, victims and potential buyers could check, do you have any idea how many horses would be saved? If Debi’s STOLEN HORSE INTERNATIONAL was THE PLACE I do believe we would actually put some fear into the fearless thiefs and those who protect them. We all have to help each other. I had always thought horse people were "good" people. The sad truth is. They may "say" they are but are so far from it. Actions are what matter. A little help could have gone a long way in catching the people that did this. At least we have him home.
I am telling everyone, trying to get the word out. PLEASE, if you have had a horse stolen or "find" a horse, please do the right thing. Call police THEN check STOLEN HORSE INTERNATIONAL We contacted the police, made flyers went to shows and sale barns you name it - up and down the highway and surrounding areas. No one saw him and once you see him...you would know. The BEST thing I EVER did was contact Stolen Horse International. Debi Medcalf was our saving grace. She and her organization never gave up hope and never took his image and flyer down. They even had hired a private investigator to try to find me. She walked me through the whole process keeping me calm and on track (which if you know me is difficult at best) My emotions run high and they get the best of me at times. Most of all when injustices happen. She is not only MY HERO but the hero of many she has assisted.
SHI has been the root of hundreds of equine recovery stories. They are a 'barnyard' name and do an AMAZING service. Debbie dedicated her life to this, and I can not think of a better cause.
