Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animal-Related, Animals, Veterinary Services

Mission: SNAP's mission is to prevent the suffering and death of companion animals and to enrich the human-animal bond by providing excellent, accessible and affordable spay/neuter and veterinary care.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 45,000 animals per yer

Geographic areas served: Houston, Pasadena and San Antonio, Texas

Programs: SNAP has been helping dogs and cats and the humans who love them for a quarter of a century! In 1994, in response to dog and cat overpopulation and unacceptably-high shelter kill rates in Houston/Harris County, SNAP was created to pioneer the nation’s first spay/neuter clinic on wheels to serve clients who live below poverty level. Founder, Sean Hawkins, relates the story of his motivation to embark on this enormous undertaking: One summer morning, a tiny puppy found in a parking lot was brought into the local shelter. She was too small to be put up for adoption, so it was my job to put her to sleep that afternoon. As I opened her cage, her big brown eyes just stared at me. Having watched the animals before her, she knew she was going to die. She was going to be killed for a crime she did not commit—being born. That puppy, Sideeke, lived with me for 22 years, and was the reason the Spay-Neuter Assistance Program began. That day I decided I was going to do something to stop the killing of homeless animals. We have Sean to thank for bringing SNAP to life, but the next twenty-five years were only possible through the steadfast support of our donors, investors, and partners. Together, we have much to be proud of. Thanks to our supporters, SNAP has been able to: • create mobile spay/neuter, providing a model which has been replicated around the world. • develop best practices for patient care in the field of high-efficiency spay/neuter • perform over half-a-million spay/neuter surgeries, preventing the suffering of millions of unwanted cats and dogs and improving the quality of life for both animals and human caregivers • establish programs and/or trained veterinarians in six U.S. states and seven foreign countries • play a significant role in helping San Antonio become the nation’s largest no-kill city, with hopes to replicate that success in the Greater Houston Area. We look forward to another twenty-five years helping pets and the people who love them! “SNAP provides extremely affordable spay/neuter and vaccinations to the community, which helps us keep our animals safe and happy. THANK YOU!” - Amelia L. Leading the Field in Competent, Compassionate Veterinary Care Since 1994

Since I moved to San Antonio two years ago, the SNAP organization has allowed me to save the lives of 2 dogs and 1 cat. With their affordable services, I was able to neuter/spay them, get their necessary shots and have them all microchipped. Without SNAP, I would not have been able to take in these animals off the street and provide them with a forever home. The individuals who work there obviously care about the animals as much as I do. I have recommended several people to them and will continue to do so in the future. Thank you SNAP for your continued efforts in healing the sick and helping to control the number of unwanted animals with your spay/neuter program.

I have been a "client" of SNAP's wellness and surgical services for 10 years. I have taken not only my personal animal companions, but my fosters, and I have sent many friends to use SNAP's services as well. I remember on one occasion, I went to the wellness clinic with a little dog I was fostering...after she got her vaccines, the vet told me I could have her spayed for free as part of a specially funded project for rescues. As a student with very limited resources, this helped me tremendously! SNAP provides an important service to the entire community of humans and animals alike; low-cost access to medical care and the prevention of unwanted animal births. SNAP's services are not confined to a clinic. They take their mobile hospital into low-income neighborhoods to perform free pet sterilizations & Rabies vaccinations to further provide access to veterinary care.

SNAP’s mission : “To prevent the suffering and death of dogs and cats due to overpopulation and preventable diseases, especially in low-income areas." - speaks to my heart.

SNAP has provided nearly 400,000 high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter surgeries since its founding. These surgeries greatly reduce the number of animals living in peril by lessening the pressure on shelters, rescue groups, and communities in general. And SNAP’s Wellness Clinic provides high-quality, low-cost wellness services to companion animals that might not otherwise receive care.

As a long time volunteer, donor, and client, I have been impressed by the professionalism of the management and employees, and the dedication of the volunteers and donors. Because of SNAP’s financial transparency, I know that my donations are used wisely. SNAP also consistently receives the highest ratings from the Houston BBB, Great Nonprofits, and other nonprofit rating agencies.

I continue to donate and volunteer, now as a board member, because I believe SNAP has the capability and staying power to help many more animals in the long term, and I want to be part of that.

SNAP (Spay-Neuter Assistance Program) is one of the finest organizations I've ever come across! Not only do they make a difference by offering quality spaying and neutering surgeries (which in turn helps our communities by preventing unwanted animals from being born and needless amounts of animals from being euthanized in shelters), but they also offer top-of-the-line afforable wellness services. I love this organization and what it has and will continue to accomplish for so many animals and the people who love them.

SNAP is an amazing organization that is truly on the front lines of the animal overpopulation crisis. Because of SNAP hundreds and hundreds of thousands of animals have been saved from being euthanized in shelters. The only way to effectively get close to no-kill status is to have an effective spay and neuter strategy. As far as money goes, your money goes the farthest with SNAP than nearly any other organization. With each 60.00 donation, SNAP can spay or neuter an animal on the mobile clinic for free for someone who cannot otherwise provide this service for their animal. SNAP is just as appreciative for the donations of materials and small cash donations as larger sponsorships because every penny goes straight to the animals! A donation to SNAP either from an organization or private individual is one of the most effective ways to support the animal community. SNAP's wellness services are an excellent option for all individuals to keep the cost of pet ownership low while providing top level care for your pet with heartworm and flea preventative and regular vaccinations. I have always been incredibly thankful and happy with the services my animals have received either through the spay/neuter surgery center or the wellness clinic and cannot recommend SNAP enough.

I just want to say how incredible this organization is. I am single and cannot afford huge vet bills. This organization's extemely reasonable costs - a fraction of for profit vet costs - allowed me to get the two cats I have spayed. I found the staff there to be personable and professional. Also, the ability to schedule spays almost any day of the week is wonderful! Thank you, SNAP, for being there!

To date, I have brought 10 feral, or homeless cats and kittens to the SNAP Clinic to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated. Before becoming aware of the affordable services SNAP provides, I was only able to afford taking 1 cat to my pet's veterinarian every few months. A few months is more than enough time for a kitten to become sexually mature, and that litter of kittens, as cute as they are, compounds the problem! All of the cats and kittens came through their surgeries very well, and recovered quickly! SNAP makes the process of making an appointment, either by phone or on-line, drop off and pick-up, very organized and easy. SNAP has made my desire to help these abandoned kitties, live a more healthy and longer life, a reality!!!! This organization is vital to both the community and the felines it serves!!!!

I really appreciate the work they do with the mobile unit that provides free services to low income households. If it wasn't for SNAP, I wouldn't have been able to get my dog neutered. He's a large dog (which is more expensive to do) and was starting to get aggressive. Being able to use SNAP kept us from having to get rid of our dog, because the neutering totally took that aggressiveness away. My daughter loves that dog like crazy, and would have been heartbroken if we'd have had to give him up for his behavior. So now we have a happy dog!! And they took excellent care of him, and the surgery was top notch. I don't think anyone could have done better!

I live in the country, and a lot of cats keep showing up on my doorstep. My Mother and I have taken about 10 cats to the mobile clinic over the years to be spayed or nuetered. If it hadn't been for S.N.A.P. there would be many more hundreds of stray cats in my area. I could not have helped keep the number of births down on strays, if it wasn't for SNAP, as I live paycheck to paycheck. This is a GREAT organization! Wished they were able to have more clinics, as the stay cats still keep showing up on my doorstep.

My mother and I took our Animals to SNAP's Rabies/microchip event. The people there were very quick, efficient, organized and also extremely nice. Between the two of us we had 5 animals and we got in and out in less than 20 minutes paying only $25 per animal! It was a great price and I walked out relieved my animals hadn't been put through more stress than was necessary. I highly recommend them to all animals owners!

What I love most about SNAP in they will fix a feral kitty (in a live trap) with no appointment, complaints, or extra fees. I've taken many I've rescued this way to them and they are the only place I've found that will provide this very difficult service. And they are always willing to help. I took one non-feral kitty in a regular carrier, and the kitty busted out in the parking lot, which is right on the freeway! The staff came out and helped. We had to lay on the ground and surround the car he went under, and one of them had to reach into the engine and pull him out. It was a happy ending and I never used that carrier again! Yay SNAP!

A homeless mama cat had 4 kittens next door and the neighbors were not happy. We took a sick one in but feared future litters. Because of SNAP, we were able to get all 5 neutered/spayed at a reasonable cost. My neighbors pitched in with the cost and I took them in as we caught them. Where else can you get a cat 'fixed' for $20? SNAP was awesome to these little guys & they were ready when they said they would be. SNAP rocks!

I have 2 cats and 2 dogs that have been spayed and/or nuetered at SNAP San Antonio. We used he mobile clinics for the first 3 but the last one was at the wellness clinic. The staff at both have always been great. Our animals have been served well by them and the price is terrific.

SNAP is one of the most wonderful animal organizations in Houston! We have a terrible unwanted animal problem here and a high kill rate at our shelters. Helping people who love animals but can't afford to get them spayed or neutered is a great way to lessen this problem. We do extensive due dilgence on the organizations they support and they have our complete faith and confidence.

My Little Girl followed me when I was on a walk and I realized she was without a home and living in my neighborhood. I enlisted the help of the lady across the street to capture this 6 month old cat and then I took her to the Houston SNAP clinic for spaying. Having this affordable service available to us is what encouraged me to spay Little Girl with the intent of her going back outside. But I fell in love and now she rules the house as the princess she truly deserves to be in our home. Since then I have become a monthly contributor to SNAP and a ardent supporter by spreading the word. The SNAP mobile clinic is a godsend for our less fortunate areas of Houston. I can not fathom how many lives have been spared the misery of fending for themselves because of the work that SNAP does in our city.

I have been involved with SNAP as a consumer, volunteer, donor, and former member of the board of directors for over a decade. SNAP is an excellent organization. It was the first group to have a mobile spay/neuter clinic. SNAP is innovative and very conscientious of how patients are cared for, and how funds are spent. SNAP is a very worthwhile charity that can be trusted to do the right thing for animals.
