I've been a board member for just about 2 years. I cannot express the dedication of the staff and their impact. The loyalty created by the programs here displays the significant role this organization has with the community. I'm so proud to be associated with the House.
I'm inspired by what this organization represents. Though I wish I had been a member of the house as a child, I am proud to be involved with Sarah Heinz House today to witness firsthand (and hopefully contribute to) the immeasurable impact it has on Pittsburgh's youth.
Lives are changed by the folks at Sarah Heinz House!! Keep up the good work.
Sarah Heinz House takes great pride in providing a trusted environment that welcomes and challenges students of all ages and provides a social and educational framework for them to become successful members of their community. The staff and volunteers are absolutely dedicated to maintaining and enhancing that environment, which is one of the reasons why Sarah Heinz House has become such an important part of students' lives for more than 100 years.
I've been a Board member for Heinz House for almost 10 years and continue to be amazed by the quality of staff, programs and members, in particular how that quality persists over time and across changes of staff and membership. There is a spirit to the organization that is passed on from person to person, generation to generation. It is a pleasure to serve them.
I am a eight year volunteer with this organization that provides a safe place for children after school hours, on Saturday and camping experiences during the summer. Sarah Heinz provides recreational,STEM,leadership, homework help and mentoring for children from several school districts in Pittsburgh,Pa.
My son,Lawyer , attended ten years at Sarah Heinz. Sarah Heinz help develop him into the man he is today. I give praise to this organization, club leaders, and the volunteers who had impact on his life. Lawyer is now a teacher and is involve with children that live in his community.
I really can't express in words how much Sarah Heinz House has changed lives. Being a member at Heinz House has given many opportunities to become someone. Sarah Heinz House has become many people second home and second family. At Sarah Heinz House you feel safe and welcomed when you step through the doors. I will never be able to thank this organization enough for all they have done for me. They teach the real meaning of happiness, to take risk and step outside of comfort zones. Sarah Heinz House has given me long-lasting relationship. The staff and members have inspired me to go out and change the world. If it wasn't for this great organization I would not be where I am today. This organization has helped me find out who I am. Sarah Heinz House offers so many programs such as dance, swimming, robotics, leagues, cooking classes, sewing, and so many more. I would find myself at Heinz House from 3:30 till 9:00 everyday, volunteering, hanging with the staff and members, catching up with my friends, and making new friends. When your apart of Sarah Heinz House you feel something so great you just never want to leave. I grew up at Sarah Heinz House, and I couldn't be any happier. When your having a bad day this organization is always there to cheer you up. Most people feel very well appreciated at this place and that's not something you get to feel everywhere. Sarah Heinz House has brought unimaginable joy to life. I feel like a better person every day because of this amazing organization. I am so grateful I am apart of something not every kid gets to be apart of. At Sarah Heinz House I have made so many memories that will last a lifetime. My future started with Sarah Heinz House and so can yours.
Sarah Heinz house is a great asset to our community. Not just recently, but over the last many years! I hear wonderful stories from my aunts and my mother, who all went to the Sarah Heinz house Camp when they were little, some of them over 50 years ago! I've been to a few fundraisers there, as well as have seen the way that the kids are excited to be involved...I can't wait to enroll my children in the Sarah Heinz House programming someday!
I could never thank this organization, and the people inside of it, enough for how much of an impact they have had on my life. This place gives every member an opportunity to learn something new, a safe environment to take risks, step out of their comfort zone, step in the spotlight, take that leadership role, and unlock their potential to grow into responsible and mature individuals. There are so many different activities to take advantage of SHH that it is hard to find something that wouldn't catch your interest. From swimming, to dance, to sports, to robotics, to art, to hanging out with friends, to playing games, to media lab, to working on your education, and to positive youth development programs SHH really tries to make sure you can have a taste of it all. I know that for several of my peers, and myself included, Sarah Heinz House quickly become our second home. We were able to create a small family, separate from our ones at home who understood and could relate to how much they loved attending Sarah Heinz House. I would find myself at SHH from right after school at 3:45 until 9 at night, going in and out of programs or trying to catch a few moments to talk to my friends. Sarah Heinz House is primarily responsible for inspiring me to continue to work with children after I graduate. The staff and volunteers have left a memorable impact on me, one that I only hope to have the privilege to make on another person's life. Sarah Heinz House enabled me to figure out who I was, to develop my leadership skills in an area I felt comfortable and has given me opportunities that I would never have been able to take advantage of had I not been a member. This organization is truly one of the most affordable, influential, safe, diverse, and amazing places I think that the northside of Pittsburgh has to offer for children in grades 1-12th. And this review only scratches the surface of the dynamics of what life with a membership at SHH has the potential to do to you.
Sarah Heinz House has touched four generations of my family. From my grandfather who served in WW1 , my mother, myself, my siblings, and to our children.
It has always and still is a huge part of my life, I am proud to carry it forward with a passion to serve the next generation to experience and benefit all the organization has to offer. Where else can a child come 6 days a week and swim, play, laugh, learn, lead and just "have fun".
I have been a part of Sarah Heinz House for over 20 years. I should really say that Sarah Heinz House has been a part of me for over 20 years. As a member, it gave me confidence when I needed it most and allowed me to meet some truly amazing people, many of whom I am still friends with today. As a volunteer of SHH, it allowed me the opportunity to give back to a great organization that offered me so much. I am forever a "Heinz Houser"!
I was a member and volunteer here for many years, and SHH impacted my life positively in many ways. It promotes strong character, good values and allowed me to form many long-lasting relationships. It truly is a wonderful place for youth. In fact, I am honored and proud to share the tradition with my children who participate in the tot programs and plan on enrolling them as members when old enough. It is much more than an after-school program, it is a second home!
Sarah Heinz House has opened their doors to provide our students an amazing learning environment during the school day. Their team has been very welcoming and accommodating to our school staying true to their philosophy of serving the youth above all else.
A great organization!
I am proud to be associated with this organization for over 30 years. I can honestly say that it has and continues to mold me into the man I am. As a member I gained so much from the programs, friendships and mentors the "House" provide me with. As staff I still continue to benefit from all Sarah Heinz House has to offer. I feel as though I have come full circle... As a child I came and learned from the adults and now as an adult, I come to learn form the kids!
I've recently became involved with Sarah Heinz House Association due to me being the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Pittsburgh Pirates. There are many great things I could say about them, but the one that hits home with me is the environment and opportunities they provide our local youth. They have a great, clean, safe facility and endless programs to support our youth throughout their adolescent years.
Good leaders are trailblazers, making a path for others to follow. Great leaders, however, can inspire the children to reach higher, dream bigger, and achieve greater. Perhaps the most important leadership skill you can develop is the ability to provide inspiration to the children that attend the Sarah Heinz House. If you inspire them to reach for the stars, they just might bring you back the moon. This is what my children where taught from the staff and volunteers here at SHH. I am grateful for the new family we have gotten as a place we can all call home and be inspired by everyday a child opens the door and enters this unique organization. Today I feel my children are always striving to be a role model and are carrying on the values that they learned here at SHH
I recently had the opportunity to take an in-depth tour of the Sarah Heinz House Association as part of an article that I was writing. I was completely blown away by every aspect of it. The staff is tremendously talented and caring, the facilities are absolutely beautiful, the programming is fun, interesting, and educational, and the kids and teens were amazing. I wish I had grown up in the area so that I could've gone there growing up! Instead, I'm looking forward to taking advantage of opportunities to volunteer at this amazing facility.
Heinz House, as members from my era called it. I was an active member there for 10 years and it influenced me tremendously, shaping my values and providing a pathway to developing leadership and collaborative skills that I use on an every day basis today. The program exposed you to many different types of activities - from sports to public speaking to running events and leading a tent-full of campers. The greatest strength of Heinz House is the path the develop for you - as a young member you get introduced to structure while having a ton of fun - both during regular activities and at summer camp. As you continue through the program, you quickly begin to value the concept of service, responsibility and the duty for assuming a leadership role in helping the younger members. This institution carries many multi-generational families - including mine - and the one common trait every member possesses after being a member there is the idea of respect and servitude for "the House".
The staff members and volunteers are excellent - they really care about the kids and they are committed to every member becoming the best they can be. Sarah Heinz House provides a place for young people to get together, have fun and at the same time develop social and educational skills.
I AM NOW 71 YEARS OLD, STILL REMEMBERING FUN , HAPPY MOMENTS AT SARAH HEING HOUSE, INCLUDING THE BEST SUMMER CAMP. BECAUSE OF MY GREAT MEMORIES THERE, I TRY TO DONATE IN MEMORY OF MY FATHER CHARLES PFEIFFER, AND MY BROTHER RICH PFIEFFER WHENEVER I CAN. I WILL ASSURE YOU HAVE CREATED GREAT STRONGER PEOPLE BECAUSE OF YOUR CAMP AND ACTIVITIES . I DO ESPECIALLY REMEMBER DAISY AND MIDGE TWO OF MY MENTORS AT HEINZ'S.THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR KIDS. CHARLENE PFEIFFER MARUSICH
All three of my sons have attended Sarah Heinz House. They grew, learned, and developed skills. They also learned how to help and mentor younger members. I also teach swim lessons and enjoy the times that I get to spend with the students, I love teaching a skill that will last them a lifetime.
I have been a member since I was a migit and i have considered it my second home since then.
I was a member, am a volunteer, was a parent of a member, and am also part time staff. I love what Sarah Heinz House represents to me, my family, and to the community. Until you become part of this organization and learn first hand everything it has to offer you can't fully appreciate the difference they can make and have been making for more than a century.
"It takes a village to raise a child." Bob, Jen, Charlie, Dave, Chris, Chuck, Lynn, Cathy, Mr. P., Val, Paul, Kyle, Dan, Gary, Cindy, Mr. and Mrs. Basil, Miss Kitty, Miss Dee and Mr. Bill, Phyllis, Jim, Gary and the hundreds of others that have touched our lives, Those mentioned are the staff, volunteers and Board members of Sarah Heinz House that have helped in raising our two boys. Without each of you (and all of those not mentioned) Liam and Nick would not be who they are today. THANK YOU.
Review from The Pittsburgh Foundation
20+ years ago I was introduced to SHH by my best friend and subsequently became a member and volunteer. Initially I thought SHH was just a place to go however, many of the experiences and opportunities I had while being a member and volunteer have shaped me into the person I am today. Throughout high school SHH became my second home. It truly was and is a great place to learn, grow and build relationships. SHH is a special resource for youth/adolescent development. Programs encouraged us to think, explore, and be responsible, to try new things, to be creative and accepting of others. And….they were fun!
Sarah Heinz House has been a part of life since I was born. My grandfather was a former program director and executive director there for many, many years. My parents met there as members of Sarah Heinz House. I too was a member of Sarah Heinz House, where I took dance classes and attended their summer camp program in Ellwood City. Now all these years later my daughter is in going into her 5th year as a member of Sarah Heinz House and her first year as a junior volunteer. The best thing I can save about Sarah Heinz House is that after all these years, the same core values and rules still exist and are followed to this day. You learn respect from the moment you walk in the door of Sarah Heinz House and are asked to take your hat off. However Sarah Heinz House has not failed to keep up with the times either - now offering programs such as day camp, robotics, media lab and silver sneakers. These are just some of the wonderful addtions made to the Sarah Heinz House over the years. Sarah Heinz House has always been a safe and fun place for school kids of all ages to go. Everyone is made to feel like they are part of one big happy family while they are down there. The staff and volunteers are exceptionally patient, caring and fun. They go out of their way to make every kid feel special and apart of the family. My daughter just loves Sarah Heinz House. She says she feels like she fits in and belongs more there than at her own school. Sarah Heinz House is truly a treasure to be shared by all.
Review from The Pittsburgh Foundation
Inn 1991 being between jobs I applied and got hired as a camp counselor at Heinz House Camp. Had the best time of my life. Met great people and great kids! I was invited by Charlie Chmura to come to the club and be a volunteer. 22 years later I am still volunteering and enjoying this boys and girls club. The facility is state of the art, has multiple activities and offer so much opportunity. But the best part of this place is the kids and the volunteers. Many of my best friends have come from meetings them or volunteering with them at Sarah Heinz House. Growing up in south suburbs of Pittsburgh I never really knew what the Northside was. This club and it's people not only welcomed me into their group, I became like one of the family. If you donate to Heinz House know that your investment is reaching lots of kids if you volunteer know that it will become a life of friendship and fulfillment.
Our organization, Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Academy, has worked with the Sarah Heinz House since 2003. Each year we team with SHH to host several robotics competitions. In the fall we team with them to host a middle school tournament called FIRST LEGO League and a high school competition called the VEX Competition. Several teams that have competed in those competitions have qualified to go to the National Championship. Each spring SHH sponsors a "May Madness" robotics competition that is open to both middle and high school age students. The spring tournament draws over 30 teams and several hundred kids. They have been an incredible partner and are making a difference in kids lives across the region.
Sarah Heinz House provides youth with the skills necessary to succeed. The staff members are genuinely concerned about every members development. The staff members and volunteers are top notch. The members love being at Heinz House and it's great to know that these children have a place to call home.
I only wish I had been given the opportunity to be a member of The Sarah Heinz House. About 20 years ago, a friend told me about it. I walked into the building and honestly my heart never left. My four children all became members, enjoying all the programs and activities offered. The Staff and Volunteers who provided leadership and friendship throughout the years can never be repaid for the work they do.
These days, I am watching my granddaughter enjoy all the great benefits that Heinz House has to offer and I still love to participate as a volunteer at Sarah Heinz House. It has truly been an Honor to be part of such a great organization.
Both of my children, 12 and 9, have been members since first grade. They attend Cyber School. What we were seeking was a place where my children can have social interaction with their peers, but what we received was far more. My daughter is now on the swim team; my son is learning to swim and thoroughly enjoying the robotics class. Five days a week they are in a fun safe environment for a minimal cost. I could not be more pleased with the facility, the staff, and especially the swimming coaches.
It was with great anticipation and excitement the day that I joined the Sarah Heinz House. I'm a senior using the Sllver Sneakers program. I needed to join to continue my physical rehab. The receptioist, Phyllis, was most helpful in handling the paperwork.
Bob Bechtold was attentive to my rehab needs and reviewed the exercise machines with me. This is an excellent facility and a grea addition to Pittsburgh.
My husband and I both attended Heinz House when we were younger and now our children are members. They love it! There is so much for the kids to do there. My son is autistic and he has come a long way. The staff at Heinz House is awesome with him. He even went to Resident Camp this year and he loved it! We thought he would only last maybe a few days, but he ended up staying both sessions! My daughter is a member and she also volunteers. She loves helping out with other kids.
Awesome place! Great summer camp for my two boys ages 5 & 9. Lots for them to do, well organized, and the kids had fun everyday.
The values and lessons instilled into my childhood development by the distinguished staff of Sarah Heinz House molded me into the person I am today. I have been fortunate enough to attend SHH as a member, and now as a volunteer. The program is the epitome of what is possible when at-risk youth become involved in an influential program. Sarah Heinz House has guided me through high school, college, graduate school, and now continues to be a part of my development as an educator. I highly recommend Sarah Heinz House to anyone who wants their youth to receive a positive, engaging, and impactful experience.
Sarah Heinz House has been a part of my life since I can remember. It truely is a "house" for so many youth. I have benefited from SHH as a member, volunteer and parent of a member. I really like seeing the personal involvement of the staff with the members. I can trust any of the staff and volunteers as a mentor for my son. With all that is heard in the news about inappropriate relationships and abusing of children, I am always secure knowing my son is there with great people. I am really happy with the robotics program that is offered there. My son has become very involved in robotics and is planning on a career in that field. The program is well funded and I have not have had to pay nearly any money for supplies or competitions. The most of the mentors are from CMU and really are involved with the kids. Plus the kids do the planning and building of the robots and the adults are there for guidance. It is truely the kids' robot.
