The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is an organization that is extraordinarily honest, smart, well run, and overwhelmingly caring and loving. They care for the dogs physical, mental, and emotional well being in their careful placements from fosters to forever homes. I have had the privilege to work with them in positively training their dogs. The mere fact that they do train speaks volumes. And the love I have seen is incredible! The other thing I love about Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is they show the same respect and care for people!! Truly unique, truly worthwhile. We need more rescues like them.

I have been following the sanctuary on facebook, and i have been really touched by the care and humour that goes into helping these dogs. Not many would look after old dogs - they are all too often overlooked. This place seems to be brimming with love, fun and happiness. I wish ALL oldies everywhere could have the same.!!

I've been following the Sanctuary on Facebook for some time now and I'm constantly struck by two things. The incredible work that must go on each and every day to make sure that the grounds are kept clean and tidy, that the dogs are fed good clean food as well as clean water and that their health needs are attended to in order to keep them healthy and happy for however long they have. The owners and volunteers have a love of dogs (and other critters I suspect) that would put most of us to shame. No dog is refused if in dire need and all are loved.
The second thing that strikes me is how happy they all are. They live together in harmony (although I suspect there is the odd difference of opinion that I'm sure is settled quickly by a volunteer), sleep together, dig endless holes together, do their doggy investigations and basically are being given a chance to spend their twilight years in a calm, safe and loving environment in a pack made up of both their fellow retirees as well as the human helpers. That is a remarkable achievement and it needs to be recognized.

This is a great group of people working to better the lives of senior dogs. There are so many dogs who are abandoned when they age and this group steps up to help them. Until people start to take responsibility for the animals they acquire and realize that it is a lifetime commitment, the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs will pick up the slack. We need more groups just like them!

I have not had to deal with this wonderful place yet and I hope I never do. Pets are forever...from puppy to the day they are no longer with us.....but, I love the fact that there is actually someone out there in todays society that cares and takes in senior dogs. So many are just pushed to the wayside. People don't understand how much our senior dogs need us. I have three that are 11+ years of age. I understand that some people just can't handle the thought of having an old dog...everyone loves puppies....but old dogs are still puppies at heart and need us even more. There may be a lot of puppies in the world but there are a lot of seniors who need just as much if not more attention. I am very thankful for nonprofits like Sanctuary for Senior Dogs. They are very kind and loving people and we absolutely need more like them in this world.

This sanctuary plus the one in Tennessee fill such a void that exists for elderly pets. I personally can't imagine giving up a pet because it is old but there are unavoidable things that can exist (owner dying is the only one I could possibly understand). I have always had elderly pets and find great joy in being their caregiver and best friend. I look forward each day to the photos they post and feel like I know these pets too.

My husband and I adopted a sweet, gentle senior lab mix a couple of years ago. The Sanctuary takes placement very seriously and puts the dog's welfare above all else. When we are in a position to adopt a dog in the future, we will certainly contact the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs.

I have a very soft spot for senior dogs and have fostered many. When I found the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs web-site, I felt like I had come home. The work this couple does to rescue senior dogs and either place them in forever foster homes or in their own sanctuary is amazing. I don't know how they do it, but I'm very thankful to them for making the last hours/days/months/years of senior dogs lives as joyous as possible.

Every night, I end my day with their Facebook posts and feel all is well with the world. I've gotten to know a number of the dogs from their posts and love to see how they transition and flourish in this sanctuary. They are obviously a very organized and compassionate couple providing the dogs with freedom to come and go in the home and yard and a special "stew" to keep their tummy's happy. God bless them.

This site not melts my heart every time I see it, but it serves such a wonderful purpose. Getting the message out of how wonderful these dogs are and what they deserve in their golden years is so important. Someday when I get a place of my own, I know I will adopt a senior dog. I thank them for getting the word out and for loving them the waythey do.

As a trend in our society grows to drop off senior pets at shelters for a variety of reason, it's good to see an organization that tries to rescue these seniors. Older animals have a lower chance of being adopted at a shelter, and often become a victim of the situation. I hope and pray that organizations such as this can continue to grow and extend their help out to protect our aging pets and allow them to find a home where they can be loved during their golden years. Thank you for your commitment to your senior pets and for the work you do for them.

I am an animal lover. I've had dogs almost all my life and I take the responsibility seriously. Till death do us part. I have rescued, fostered and rehomed dogs. The cruelty that happens to these wonderful babies is so mind boggling to me and I cannot understand how anyone can have a dog in their family for years, then suddenly decide to abandon them because they are old. They must have no heart. This organization pulled at my heart strings from the first time I saw them on facebook. I wasn't really aware how often this was happening to senior dogs. These people that put their time and effort into loving and caring for abandoned old dogs feel like family to me because they "get it". Imagine how confused, scared and lonely these dogs feel waiting for their owners to return after being dropped off at some shelter. Many will not be adopted because of their age. Many will be euthanized. At this time I live in a home that is to small to foster or rescue more dogs then I already have but once I have a bigger spot I will follow this rescues example and take in senior dogs. This organization has openned my eyes and I am so thankful they do what they do.

All animal rescues are important and unfortunately VERY necessary. But to have one devoted to SENIOR dogs (of all breeds) is so special. I have had the good fortune to adopt three senior dogs in my life, and their love and devotion is so wonderful. I've never understood the preference for PUPPIES -- did that "once", (a rescue, of course) got the t-shirt, won't be doing THAT again... :) i had her til she was 12 and her grown up years were MUCH more fun! I admire this group so much, follow them on Facebook, and wish them well!! They are definitely angels on earth -- no dog should be dumped in a shelter, but ESPECIALLY the older ones who HAD a home, how do they EVER understand and/or adjust? Simple answer: they don't. God Bless these kind-hearted people who look after "seniors".

The sanctuary is taking care of dogs that slip through the cracks. Because they have gotten too old, they are given to the dog shelter where a death sentence was in their future. No one will adopt older dogs for a variety of reasons. I have been most impressed by the work done at this shelter. Also by the number of dogs taken in. Pictures of the dogs everyday show how happy they are and how they thrive with the most important thing...love. The shelter has excellent resources and a fantastic foster program.

I think the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is a fabulous place and much needed. They take care of senior dogs and give them a lot of love and the most comfort they can when everyone else abandons these beautiful dogs. I wish there was a sanctuary closer to where I live that I could go and visit, but I share their wonderful caring the best that I can. I am in the process right now of making some crocheted sweaters to donate to the sanctuary to keep the senior furbabies warm this winter. I follow the Sanctuary everyday on facebook. Ceal

This charity not only does a wonderful job rescuing, homing & loving & caring for all their senior dogs, but by sharing information via facebook they are helping people who are caring for their own 'seniors. I live in the UK, yet through their telling about their daily lives caring for their 'family' of seniors in words & pictures, I have had so much useful information to help make my own much loved seniors life easier & more fulfilling. I know there are so many more people who have benefitted in this way { we share comments on FB!} The work these people do is making people look at old dogs in a much more positive way. These people deserve all the recognition they can get . They are a credit to your country !

This past February, I pushed my family to join me in beginning an adventure into the realm of fostering dogs - specifically senior dogs. We applied with the Sanctuary, and I was impressed with how carefully our application was reviewed - references were contacted, I spent a lot if time on the phone with the Director, visited the Sanctuary with my family, and wrapped up with a home visit before we finally had the chance to foster our first dog. Our first fostering experience was wonderful and the support and level of communication and commitment from the Director was outstanding. We now have a second foster in our care and are continuing to have a wonderful experience. We are huge fans of the Sanctuary and are always happy to spread the word about the good work this organization does in a responsible way.

This a great organization with passionate leadership who uses a lot of personal resources and time to help out a more marginalized group of animals--senior dogs. The fact that an organization exists to specifically care for the often forgotten (but very lovable!) older and ailing man's best friends is a great asset to our community.

Everytime I get a chance to help out at one of their events I am amazed at how caring and dedicated the people who run this organization are. I have had the joy of meeting alot of the Sanctuaries seniors and when you look into the eyes of these sweet dogs your life is changed forever! I have a t-shirt from the Sanctuary that says "Old Dogs Make Great Friends" and it is absolutely true! I am so happy that an organization exsists that is dedicated to saving so many of the overlooked senior dogs in kennels and hope they continue to rescue even more than they already have!

This is a great group of very dedicated people. I volunteer at a Humane society that had a senior dog that was not doing well in a shelter setting. She came from a bad situation and had been at the shelter a long time and was being overlooked by adopters because of her age. We contacted The Sanctuary For Senior Dogs and they agreed to take her in. She was taken in by a foster and is now living the wonderful life we had all hoped she would find.

I provided a foster home for Trudy. It was a wonderful experience, and found the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs to be extremely caring and supportive of both the dogs and foster parents. On two occasions I needed to be hospitalized on an emergency basis and they immediately found someone to take care of Trudy, came to my home to pick her up, and then returned her when I was back home. A month ago I had to sell my home, and move to an apartment where they would not allow dogs. This was a very difficult experience. I had dogs all my life and am now 72 yrs old. They were very supportive of me and what I was going through, and were able to locate another loving foster home for Trudy. She is adapting very well. I plan on continuing to volunteer for the sanctuary, although I am unable to foster at this point. They were also focused on maintaining the dog's physical health, and had a wonderful relationship with Dr. Bob at Gateway Animal Hosp.

I currently foster for the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs and absolutely love it. I have fostered for other rescue groups before and what stands out about the Sanctuary is the level of commitment they have to the dogs in their care. They spare absolutely no expense when it comes to vet care and never question whether or not to spend the money at the vet. That gives a volunteer such piece of mind. It also gives potential adopters piece of mind, knowing this dog has had their medical, social and behavioral needs addressed while in foster care. I know the vet they use is the absolute best in the area and truly cares about the well being of senior animals. The Sanctuary goes above and beyond when it comes to an animals well being.

The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs provides hope for the most desperate animals in a shelter. It's rare for a senior to get adopted from a shelter, however, it is almost impossible for a senior with health or behavior issues to make it out alive. I have been fostering a 10 year old mixed breed dog with a treatable thyroid condition for months. I have trouble imagining she would have made it out of a shelter without the help of the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs. When she was found as a stray, she had tumors and other health issues. She can be terribly shy with people and is not one of those dogs that would stand out in a shelter. However, in a foster home she thrives. She gets to play with other dogs (which she enjoys), lay in a comfy bed, eat good food, go on walks, have her medical needs attended to and most importantly, learn that she can trust people and be part of a family again. The Sanctuary for Senior dogs gave her hope and treated her life with the respect and dignity she deserves.

The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is an organization dedicated to saving the lives of senior dogs in shelters. I fostered for them and adopted one of my fosters 6 years ago. She is a true joy and I am so glad that I found out about this organization. All of the dogs are placed in loving homes until they are adopted, and Sanctuary dogs have a home for life if the home they are adopted into doesn't work out for any reason.

The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs has been a catalyst for bringing awareness to the value of senior dogs in the community. I have first hand experience to the services that the organization has provided over the past decade. My first real experience to the power of the organization was when I was working for an animal control shelter and a blind 8 year old collie mix was found wandering the streets. I felt so bad for this dog, it was heartbreaking to see him so confused in a cage, I am sure so scared by sensory overload of loud noises and overwhelming smells. The realization was that there was no chance that he would live out his golden years in a safe and loving environment, I just remember how pathetic that was. Thankfully, when the Sanctuary was notified, the path to a loving home was set in motion. With a lot of hard work and brainstorming on the part of the organization, this dog found a loving home who was committed to providing him a safe and fulfilling life. That started the beginning of the life saving role that the Sanctuary has had for dogs who otherwise would not have an opportunity to enjoy what should be the best and most comfortable years of their lives. The organization has taught me that nothing is impossible when a small group of dedicated individuals are determined and passionate about making a difference in the lives of senior dogs.

I found the Sanctuary quite by mistake - my son was looking for a small dog so I started searching the internet for a chihuahua. What I found was a sad looking little girl with the most interesting face in the world. The sadness in her eyes was more than I could resist. I called the Sanctuary and went to meet Evie. It was love at first sight on my side and, I hope, on her side too.

After being evaluated as a foster parent for Evie, I took her home and started her on the path to happy home life. Deborah Workman was there to help me and answer any questions that I had about taking proper care of Evie. Since she had some serious medical problems when she came to the Sanctuary, Evie could not be spayed so I remained her foster mom for several years before she developed pyometra. Even though this is a serious medical problem and life-threatening, Evie's resilience came through again and she survived the surgery and now I was able to officially adopt her.

Without the Sanctuary I'm sure that Evie would not have survived. They really are a sanctuary for older dogs who become homeless through no fault of their own. Often older dogs become homeless because their owners are also old. They often cannot continue to care for their cherished pets because of medical issues, having to move into a home that won't accept their pet or perhaps death. The Sanctuary is always there to try and find a new home for these misfortunate pets and make sure they get the medical care they need.

I met Deborah Workman at my place of work. She asked me if I would consider welcoming a senior dog into my home. A short time later, I became permanent foster for " Chester." Chester stayed with me for about two years until he crossed the rainbow bridge. I think Chester fostered me more than I him. I only wish we had more time together. The sanctuary places great seniors in homes where they are able to live out their final years with dignity and love.

I have been a volunteer for The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs for over 10 years. Their focus is on saving and rehabilitating senior dogs that have been abandoned in shelters and pounds and also on educating the public of the value of senior dogs. Just this year they have added 3 new senior therapy dogs!! What better way to spread the word about the wonderful accomplishments our senior canine friends can achieve. I have fostered multiple dogs for this organization. Some for just short periods before they have been adopted, and some "forever" fosters due to health or behavior issues. I have had several dogs in hospice care and have found this organization to be very supportive of the needs of the dog and the foster home. The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs provides all medical care for the dogs it takes in and never denies medical care for any condition. All of the volunteers are dedicated to this organization and to spreading the word about the value of senior dogs. I wouldn't want to be doing anything else.

I have been a volunteer with this organization for 8 years. I have served as a foster home for numerous dogs during that time. Some of my foster dogs were adopted after being with me only a few weeks, while others were with me several months. And during that time I have had a few that stayed with me until it was their time to cross to the Rainbow Bridge. When a dog enters The Sanctuary For Senior Dogs rescue, it is guaranteed a loving home for the rest of its life. The goal is to find it a loving forever home, but sometimes a dog comes to us with emotional or medical issues that prevent it from being a good candidate for placement, so it will stay safe and loved with its foster caregiver. Ever dog I was lucky enough to foster, touched my life in a very special personal way.

The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is just that. It is a place where abandon senior dogs get a second chance to find a loving home and people to care for them, love them, and cherish them. The volunteers, staff and board have undying devotion to seeing that each dogs needs are met be it medical, emotional, or training needs. The adoption process structured to ensure appropriate placement in loving homes. The foster families provide temporary or long term / permanent care to seniors while they wait for the right home or grow old and reach the end of their lives. The Sanctuary is a wonderful organization, filled with wonderful people and wonderful senior dogs who have so much to offer. Those resiliant seniors are the heart of this organization and the best friends anyone can ever hope for. My last four dogs have been from the Sanctuary and two of them are going strong. I started as a volunteer with the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs about 6 years ago, becoming a board member a few years after that. I am so honored to be a small part of an organization that does such wonderful work. Senior dogs are so amazingly special and it is truly heartbreaking how many of them end up in dire circumstances through no fault of their own. Other reviewers have talked about all of the things that the Sanctuary does to meet the needs of these wonderful creatures, but one of the things that also impressed me was their mission to show what these dogs can still contribute to society. Almost since their beginning, the Sanctuary has had one or more senior therpay dogs actively giving back to the community by visiting nursing homes, developmental centers, library reading programs, etc. I could go on for some time about the difference the Sanctuary makes in the lives of so many deserving dogs, but right now my own 13 year old has brought me a toy and is asking to go outside.

I have worked with and have known a huge number of animal rescue organizations in the past 30 years, and the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs ranks among the very top of all of them. They are unique in the fact that they focus more on the individual dog rather than the number of dogs (although the number of dogs they are able to rescue and care for is very impressive, too). Every senior dog is given 100% of whatever they need in terms of vet care, emotional care, love and compassion, training, patience, and time. If they cannot be adopted for any reason, the Sanctuary will give them all the love and care they want in a foster home for the remainder of their lives. They are never euthanized to make room for more. The ones that can be adopted are adopted only to the best of homes to ensure that they are never abandoned or lost or dumped again, and that they live out their lives with safety, health, and love. Each dog that enters the Sanctuary is given the love and dignity he/she so very much deserves, and is given a lifetime commitment by the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is also unique in that it focuses only on senior dogs, which are the ones that, sadly, society tends to throw away in favor of the younger puppies. The Sanctuary sees the immense value and worthiness of these seniors and what they have to offer us, and makes sure that they are given the love and respect that they so richly deserve in return.

Two years ago there was a tiny, very old, very fragile chihuahua at the rural high-kill shelter where I volunteered to arrange rescue for their dogs. She was very sweet but in terrible shape, missing teeth, loaded with fleas, hair loss and it was clear she had other health problems as well. I was familiar with their work and so I contacted the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs. They had a foster available and agreed to take her. She was taken to a vet immediately, received the very best care possible, and then went to a loving "forever" foster home because she was too fragile to spay. Her last days could have been spent laying on a cold concrete floor in a dog pound without their help. I rescued hundreds of dogs during my years of going to this pound and some of them will stay in my heart forever. Evie was one of those dogs. I had followed their work before and continue to do so and have seen many beautiful loving dogs get second chances because of the work they do. Seniors are so deserving and generally very hard to find a rescue for, especially those who are very old or have serious health problems. Every dog that joins the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs has a safe, kind, loving place to live out however much time they have. Their contribution to the rescue community is immeasurable.

The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is an amazing nonprofit!! They rescue senior dogs (7 years or older) from local shelters and pounds. The Sanctuary then provides each and every dog with exceptions medical care and loving foster homes where they are shown unconditional love until they can find their forever home. Even more impressive is their forever foster program, if a dog that is rescued is unable to be adopted maybe because of a medical condition they remain in the program until such time as they cross the Rainbow Bridge.

I first contacted the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs when I was volunteering in dog rescue & attempting to match a senior dog in a kill shelter with a rescue. They were unable to take a dog from out of state at that time due to resource constraints but they were helpful and sympathetic. I began to follow their work & learn all that they do for senior dogs. Many people do not realise how hard it is to rescue seniors, how often they are dumped in shelters, or onto the streets. Everyone wants a puppy, or at least a younger dog. The work of this rescue is crucial. They raise awareness about what wonderful companions senior dogs are and they save many lives. They publish a calendar that highlights the wisdom & beauty of grey-muzzled dogs. I contribute to them when I can and would give more if I could so that they can expand their resources and save more seniors. No senior dog should die unloved and abandoned in a shelter.
