Equalia Actualization Certification program offered by Saffyre Sanctuary! I am quite new to really knowing horses, but after a "lightning bolt" moment I decided that I wanted/needed to incorporate these beautiful beings into my life and career on a much deeper level. So after researching several certification programs and not really feeling they were a good fit for me, I called on Kate Neligan (Equine Life Coach) to give me some guidance! Little did I know that she had just partnered with Esta Bernstein and Equalia. After meeting with Esta I knew I found the place I belonged. Esta's relationship with horses is the most amazing thing I have ever seen! She knows her stuff and she knows horses! In a very short time I have learned to look at horses as our partners in life, as they have such great gifts to offer and teach us. They guide us to really know ourselves and how they want/need to be treated, as well as, how we should treat our fellow humans. I have learned so much about their bodies, nutrition, bathing, grooming, how they like to play, be heard and how they are asking for our partnership, and being open to what they have to teach us. I see each and every horse as more beautiful than I ever did before! Where Esta teaches the horse side, Kate teaches us the human side with her life coaching skills. As I have just started to do my modules with Kate, she has gotten me more in touch with meditation and breathing and the healing touch and presence of these magnificent creatures. I am looking forward to her guiding me to be the best equine-assisted life coach I can be, which her years of experience and passion for sharing what she knows! Both Esta and Kate are always sending me helpful references to help me on my way, Not many instructors would be as giving and as invested. I appreciate it so much! Thank you both so much. I know that I have found forever friends and mentors in Kate and Esta and my life is so much richer for choosing to bring them along with me in my journey!
I love volunteering at Saffyre anytime I am in town. Esta and John are both so passionate about the wellbeing of horses, and the horses here are given superb care. I can't say enough good things about Saffyre!
I have nothing but good things to say about Saffyre Sanctuary. I have volunteered here on numerous occasions, and have always been impressed with how deeply they care for the horses. The level of attention that that these horses are given is unparalleled and is truly heartwarming to see. Esta is a wonderful human being, whose love for horses is unlike anyone I have ever known! This place is doing great work.
I feel incredibly grateful and lucky to have connected with Esta and Saffyre. After reading The Tao of Equus 10 years ago, working in equine assisted therapy has been a dream of mine. Enter Katie, a wonderful woman working in this field, who in turn introduced me to her mentor Esta. I took a few courses with Katie which were enlightening, then went on to volunteer at the sanctuary. Esta generously shares her knowledge of everything regarding horses, from care and nutrition to healing therapy work. She also helped me overcome my nervousness around horses and build my confidence.
The deep, transformational care the rescue horses receive is inspirational. It makes you wish all horses could be treated so well.
I have taken 9 people to help volunteer at Saffyre and every one of them has come away feeling better about themselves, more deeply connected, and they all want to go back. If you have the chance to volunteer or donate please do. The positive role this charity plays in the world needs to not only continue, but expand.
I LOVE the horses at Saffyre Sanctuary and the work that we do there. I am there 5 days a week and have been volunteering for 2 ½ years. I have learned so much from my work there from the horses and the people I work with. I have seen people change and horses change is such positive ways. Horses really are natural healers. I hope everyone will consider coming to work with us and enjoy the outdoors and the connection that you can't help but feel when joining this magical small herd of teachers.
I was searching for a place that needed my help when I found Saffyre Sanctuary on line. I had been taking lessons on horse care but I was still a novice. Esta put me to work right away and she and the horses have taught me something new everyday. There is nothing better than learning by doing. I really feel valued by the organization and I feel like I'm making a difference. I love my time there so much I go four days a week.
Sadly this rescue caters more to the founder's 3 horses than it does to the 4 real rescues.
The founder omits to tell that she bred her 2 younger horses and that her older stallion is their sire. These horses get the best of care while the rescues are basically ignore by her.
It is shamefull and takes away from bonified rescues.
This is a person who knows Saffyre Sanctuary and has a personal vendetta against the owner. Her claims are unfounded and untrue. It is our daily practice to tell any volunteers and guests that come to visit Saffyre that Caley, Mini C and Casey are owned by Esta Bernstein, the founder, and that they are an integral part of our program and the reason that Saffyre exists. Every horse under our care, regardless of who owns them on a piece of paper, receives an equal amount of love, attention and care. If anyone has questions or concerns, they are more than welcome to come visit us and participate to see what we do. - Karen Parks, Board Member for Saffyre Sanctuary
I have known Esta for a little over 10 years... she has always conducted herself and her business of caring for horses with integrity and with the best interest of the horses in mind. First knew of her when she stood her amazing Arabian stallion at stud, and now she has followed her heart to help all horses in need. When she started her rescue she gave it her all and continually puts their needs before hers. I highly recommend her and her non-profit!
I had the privilege of spending almost a week at Saffyre Ranch with Esta Bernstein. She is dedicated, caring, helpful, and has rescued and changed so many horses lives. These horses wouldn't have stood a chance without her. She is always ready and willing to teach and share her knowledge about the horses with such love and enthusiasm, I really didn't want to leave Saffyre Ranch as even though the stories are heartbreaking, being around these horses now and seeing and feeling how great they are doing makes me feel so peaceful inside. It has been shown that just being around these beautiful beings will make a change in the way you feel inside. If I lived closer (I am 6 hours plus away) I would be there volunteering not just for what I can give the horses but what they also give me in their presence. You are very lucky if you are close enough to go visit Esta, Kate and Saffyre Ranch. It really is wonderful. Ask to be shown the hummingbird nest that I found when I was there. If you are able to donate even a little of your time or money do it. I promise you will be enriched as I was. Esta is one person and it really does take a village. The pictures below are of me at Saffyre Ranch with Lindsay, Lakota and Kate Nelligan who works with Esta doing her own beautiful work with humans and horses.
You may be very surprised but, it is true that even 2 years after I adopted my "Starlight N Roses",
Saffyre Sanctuary & it's founder & CEO, Esta G. Bernstein, is "ready 24/7 - via multiple forms to communicate"! If I have any problems, questions , seek input for training methods, or need more information on horse health & First Aid, non-chemical alternatives for medications & applications, help to decipher & confirm required and/or harmful ingredients of both horse feed & supplements! Via a volunteer's daily blog posted on FaceBook,
I have the "inside information" on what transpires & activities at Saffyre Sanctuary, as well as the progress information of the rescued horses at the Sanctuary! I am up-to-date on issues that pertain to horses on state, national & international levels via regular monthly newsletter emailed from Esta. Anyone & everyone who wants a part in the rescue & rehabilitation of horses should choose Saffyre Sanctuary whether via being a hands-on volunteer, provider of needed horse services or, by the much needed financial, feed & gear donations; all this help is for the horses who, without any their faults, need humans who care enough to save their lifes & willing to provide them with loving for-ever-homes and all their needs satisfied on a daily basis!
As a person involved with a private equine sanctuary in Southern California, I am so very grateful to Saffyre Sanctuary for contacting us and aiding us to give lifetime sanctuary to nearly 10 of our beloved and unique horses.
Esta Berstien understands the different needs and abilities of each horse and she goes above and beyond to find the ideal partnership for the horses and those adopting them. She also follows up after a horse has been adopted and that is so important.
We, at Assisi Equine Sanctuary, understand the dedication and sacrifice required when taking in horses who have no other options and we have tremendous respect and admiration for Esta Bernstein's excellent knowledge, sincerity and impeccable ethic's.
Absolutely top notch!
I volunteered at Saffyre Sanctuary and was very impressed by the love and the dedication these woman, men and children volunteers put towards these amazing horses. You feel the love and respect for the horses while you are there. They have high standards for the living conditions of the horses. Keep up the good work!
Saffyre Sanctuary is truly a sanctuary for the equine and human soul. Esta is truly an angel amidst us. She is empathetic, authentic and truly open hearted. She connects with these horses and wants to heal their body and heart and place them in a connected, correct situation. I am honored to help her and humbly call her my friend.
The absolute best rescue for horses. They are treated like kings and queens by Esta and the staff. They also provide help for us humans too. Makes me wish I was one of their horses!!
I have been involved with horses for over 50 years, and met all kinds of people. People like Esta are in the rare top half percent of the horse world. She is tireless in her efforts to reclaim the lives of her rescues and provide the treatment that they have always deserved. She truly has these animals best interest at heart and is able to communicate with them on a level that is only known by a rare few. I have never met anyone as selfless and dedicated in their efforts in any animal rescue. If we all cared even a fraction as much as her this world would be a much better place for all animals...two legged and four.
Saffyre Sanctuary taught my son with autism to listen to what horses can teach him. Esta Bernstein has been so patient with not only the care if her horses but also knowing the value her horses have to teach us all of what it is like to be truly cared for as one being to another.
Saffyre Sanctuary is a safe haven and awe-inspiring rescue ranch founded and led by an incredible horsewoman and caretaker Esta Bernstein. Esta understands that each horse has different needs and gives them the specific care they require and deserve. She goes above and beyond for the horses' emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual needs. The horses receive excellent nutrition, lots of grooming, great turn-out time and socialization and always look clean, happy, and healthy when I've been there.
First of all Olivia 15 get a life, obviously you don't have one right now. I have done enough research to know Saffyre sanctuary is an institution with people doing what very few people do, that is giving love and a chance to horses someone else didn't give that chance to. It takes special people to understand that animals have thoughts, feelings like humans. My wife and I adopt all our animals, some with existing medical conditions. We are able to adopt these animals because of organizations such as Saffyre and he people who staff them. Keep up the excellent work and ignore people like Olivia 15
Let's set the record straight here regarding this operation. I have been with this rescue for over four years and am very involved with the whole aspect of how it works. The posting by Olivia is one of a bitter person that did not get what she wanted so she had a temper tantrum, like most children have.
Had to go to court and request a restraining order to quench her unfounded accusations.
I have never met anyone who genuinely cares for what is best for the horses as Esta Bernstein does.
I visited many Southern California rescues and found most of them to be self serving rather than horse serving. Saffyre is the real deal for sure.
Review from Guidestar
i Had never been involved with rehoming and or rescued horses. i love the arabians i recieved thru them and can only say a million thank you's and express what a wonderful experience this has been for me. rehoming and rescuing horses i think can be bumpy by its nature-Saffyre helped me thru the bumpy parts! My experience was fantastic. Esta and all involved are great communicators and always kept me in the loop and helped me -understand my part in the process. Always answered my calls and emails! I was personally welcomed with open arms literally. I have great respect and admiration for this organization-their heart is in the right place and what they are doing is a huge service in promoting and saving Arabians and other horses. i noticed great care being given to proper placement with individual and horse- which serves to make the bond secure and successful. it is hard to find the words to express how really valuable a service Saffyre,Esta and all are providing, it is truely a most wonderous thing that is being done, that someone really cares and holds to the highest standards. I now have two new members added to our family- Ollie and Kremson, Arabians and we are so very happy with them! This has been a win-win experience, I highly recommend Saffyre Sanctuary,Inc., i wish them only more support in continuing the great work at hand - saving and placing Arabians and other horses. Our Hats off to Saffyre, Esta and All. You helped my dreams come true! Sincerely JMHall and Family...........
Saffyre Sanctuary has worked non-stop to save, rehabilitate, and re-home Arabian horses in California, and in the surrounding southwest states. Integrated care in feeding, veterinary and medical treatment, emotional cognitive interventions, and therapeutic plans for rebuilding the horse's body and soul, are a few key ways Saffyre Sanctuary functions as a go-to resource for neglected, abused, relinquished, or rescued horses, and for the people who participate in the world of horse management. Saffyre Sanctuary also provides education and training sessions in equine counseling, and awareness training for human partners to learn more about themselves, while working with saving horses. Foundational understanding and knowledge of the Arabian horse is well situated in the applied philosophy of Saffyre Sanctuary. This non-profit is key in both the current status of horse care, and in the future by modeling standards for equine recovery. B. Littleton, Professor & Clinical Therapist.
It's really hard to put in words how wonderful and inspiring Saffyre is. I have never had experience with horses up close and personal, but within my first 5 minutes of being there, everything felt so natural. You learn to respect and understand the horses, since each one has their own personality, (just like us humans!) It's not about riding horses and using them for personal benefit. Saffyre is about spending time, learning and truly developing a nurturing relationship with such majestic creatures.
Esta has created a place where neglected or mistreated horses can come to regain their strength, both mentally and physically. Each horse has its own personality and Esta tailors their care according to their needs. As a volunteer, I was put to work but also taught about each horse and how Saffyre cares for them holistically inside and out. Overall, Saffyre Sanctuary is a great nonprofit that offers an excellent program for the horses and volunteers alike.
I visit once a week from 3-7pm. There are 4 rescues and three owned by the founder. The big reward for me is being close to the horses. They appreciate us taking great care of them. This means cleaning their stall, filtering and topping off their water all while talking to them and petting them. Then we turn them out, and bathe a couple. I like to take the newest one Joshua
for a walk. He likes to have face time with the neighboring horses. You can bond w these guys and they are so SWEET! Esta the founder has taught me so much about respecting them. These are the luckiest horses to be in this sanctuary.
Esta and John are inspirational in their care and support for their equine charges. Not only do they spend countless hours and $$ from their own pockets working with the volunteers to feed, groom, clean and love the rescues, but they insist that we take time to LISTEN and just BE with the horses. Thank you Esta and John for your heart work!
I just stopped by the stables to visit an old friend who was volunteering at Saffyre Sanctuary. I wasn't there long before i picked up a rake and started helping as I felt the depth of good that was happening there. I now plan to help out at least once a week as helping there feels like I'm a part of something good happening in the world. The horses are also teaching me so much so quickly. I'm learning about pure reciprocal love as the horses love to love and be loved. I'm learning about manifestation and how to work with the universe to co create what I wish to see happen for the horses not yet rescued. I'm happy to have stumbled across this shelter and I love how consciously aware they are of the needs of these beautiful animals. It's a great place to volunteer and be around an important progressive consciousness. It's what I needed.
Absolutely amazing! Truly a great rescue. Far exceeds any other out there. I cannot say enough good about Esta and everyone else involved.
Thank you! :D
what a wonderful, caring group!!!!!! thanx for all you do!!!!
I got involved with Saffyre Sanctuary last July (2013) and have loved the time I've spent with Esta, John, and the beautiful horses. Esta has established a very loving and nurturing atmosphere in which all volunteers and individuals that come to the sanctuary learn and grow from one another. Before volunteering, Esta had called me to discuss my hopes and interests in Saffyre. I explained my love for animals and she assured me that I would learn far more from the horses [about myself] than I could imagine. How true that statement has proven to be!
Esta and John both have taught me so much regarding the care and treatment of horses. Both take the time to teach and thoughtfully guide each volunteer, regardless of horse experience, through every learning process. From bathing an Arabian to playing with the a beautiful rescue horse named Lakota, my time spent at Saffyre has been enriching and life-giving. I am so thankful for Esta, John, and the caring individuals who take the time to love on the horses that make Saffyre the unique sanctuary it is.
If you can spare the time, I urge you to visit. It will well be worth your while. All guests are welcomed with open arms. There's just something special about this place; you feel special being there.
A healing place for horses and humans alike! A wonderful group of beings that I am privileged to spend time with. These horses have brought me so much joy.
Saffrye Sanctuary, Inc., it's founder and CEO Esta Bernstein, foster caregiver Janie Oliver, horse trainer Tiffany Jenkins, and the many unnamed volunteers and financial supporters embody and daily carry out the mission of this non-profit organization to rescue and rehabilitate neglected and abused horses (special expertise for Arabians but accept all other breeds too). I was extremely excited to find an 8 year old Arabian Mare (perfect age and horse breed for my granddaughter and me) on the "Rescue Me" website, which assists many rescue agencies to find new homes for rehabilitated animals of all kinds; the initial response from Esta Bernstein of "adoption already in progress" was disappointing but life goes on and, problems with my email account and changes did occur. Restored email account showed a later email from Esta that this Arabian Mare had not been adopted and the contact information for the foster care giver renewed the hope and excitement. The "in-person" meeting with the horse was also attended by the foster caregiver, the horse trainer and my immediate family members; this organization draws from it's involved volunteers' feedback of the suitability of horse and prospective adopter(s)!! Endorsed by the foster caregiver, an inspection of the proposed new home/ stable & stall was scheduled and conducted by Esta; she also personally "interviewed" (awesome whisperer-in-action event) each of the boarded horses and pony :). Upon her approval of the facility and my adoption of the Arabian Mare, Esta told me that she would be continuously available to answer all of my questions and address all my concerns even after completion of the adoption process -- indeed Esta is easily accessible and, even responded to my questions on Thanksgiving !!! Just as incredible is the accessibility of the foster caregiver, the horse trainer and the recommended professional horse transporter. In short, when you adopt a rescued horse from Saffrye Sanctuary, Inc., you get adopted by Esta Bernstein and all the volunteers involved with the rehabilitation of that particular horse :). Esta freely shares her wealth of research findings and longtime hands-on experiences pertaining to "A through Z" of equines such as wholesome and nutritional feed, use of non-chemical and non-toxic products to maximize and maintain the health and balance of body and mental functions for longevity and prolonged physical activity soundness. I am now supported by the far reaching connections of an even bigger "Horse Family" which makes my stewardship of this incredible Arabian Mare even more enjoyable. As we are in the annual season of gratitude and giving, I want to encourage everyone to appreciate and send donations to Saffrye Sanctuary, Inc., since it's mission is to rescue horses from the plight of neglect and abuse, rehabilitate the body and spirit of each and, to place the horses with suitable stewards so the trust and positive partnership between hunan and horse is restored.
Esta and John are devoted and talented leaders of this amazing sanctuary. The horses are cared for inside and out. Esta puts so much thought into every step of each horse's rehabilitation and care, giving all of them the love they need in order to be ready to go to the right permanent home.
I came with no horse experience, but Esta and John patiently taught me the ropes. Now I feel confident with the horses, and I enjoy working hard and learning more every time I go back.
Most of all though, I appreciate the time given to every volunteer to get to know the horses while we work. The most rewarding part of volunteering is the deep relationships that volunteers form with all of the wonderful horses.
What started as a volunteer opportunity for my 10 year old daughter has turned into a labor of love for my whole family. In the last few months, this group of patient, caring people and the amazing animals they care for have turned us all into horse lovers. I know we benefit as much as the horses do from our time together - it's truly therapeutic! We are so grateful for this experience and plan to keep helping by making time each week to volunteer, and giving as generously as we can manage. Join in!
Saffyre Sanctuary does everything right to rehabilitate, care for and love abused and neglected horses. Please help them all you can by donating land or money for this very valuable nonprofit with heart! Liz Mitten Ryan, Equinisity Retreats.
This organization has a GREAT BIG HEART for helping horses. and the people who love them!
Well I know this is a tough job, it hurts emotionally. I try to rescue whatever I can, its a gotta do it type thing. I have three horses, am allowed to have up to four here on my land (1 acre). I am lucky, I get to live with my horses and I don't know how it could ever be any other way, they are part of me. I see them every day several times, I ride them, train them, feed them, love them and exercise them, I even put them to bed at time in their rooms and provide fresh shavings bi-weekly. Horses are the most wonderfully deep creatures, they just know things. I wish I didn't have to go to work because I would just take care of them more. Horses need a leader and the more you give to them the more they shine.
There are just too many horses and other animals that desperately need good homes. Its a very sad situation. I just don't know what to do about it. I would love to help out if I could, of course, it would make me very happy.
Esta Bernstein, the owner of Saffyre Sanctuary has always impressed me because she and her gang have saved so many horses thru hard work and donations. She truly cares about the horses and is a true humanitarian to all animals. God bless her and thank goodness for Saffrye Sanctuary, Inc. Jan Schommer
When it became sadly necessary to place our two horses, we tried placing them on our own as well as other rescue groups with a lot of wasted time and disappointment. It was different with Esta at Saffyre. She just never gave up and ultimately matched each horse with a wonderful home.
Thanks to Esta and her Saffyre Sanctuary, I now am the proud onwer of a beautiful Arabian Stallion. He was severly abused & neglected and saved by Esta. He has now been with me 10 months and has regain trust in us, the people. Esta monitored his progress and was always there to answer questions and assist with guidance on his nutritional needs. She doesn't just save the horses, she gives them hope and a new life as well as matching them with their owners. My gratitude is infinite and I only wish more rescues had their own Esta on board. She can manage horses and people with flair & love.
I visited Saffyre Sanctuary recently. The company I work for does a Benefit Horse Show every August. We are searching for the 2013 recipient of our Silent Auction proceeds. I found Esta and the volunteers to be very knowledgeable about Equine Rescue care. They are not just about rescuing horses, but also about educating the public about Equine Safety. I was inspired by the dedication of her and the staff, their stories of rescues, and the sincere desire, determination and commitment to help save horses in need. This program is very well run and organized, and succeeding despite our problematic economy. Sincerely, Lisa Herron
I became aware of the Sanctuary from another volunteer. I had been interested in learning to ride horses and was told by another friend I should learn to be around horses. I started to volunteer and learned there is a lot to caring for horses and have been involved with the rehabilitation of two horses. It is rewarding to be involved with the everyday care and feeding, but the most rewarding is when the horse feels comfortable with me and recognizes me when I arrive and parking my car. I have become involved on a regular basis, feel I am being educated on proper care, handling, and housing of these beautiful animals. I have invited friends and my granddaughter to participate and they too are now involved.
