My children received grants for math tutoring (a subject my husband usually helps the kids with, and that confused me) while my husband was deployed. When my husband got home, there were a number of opportunities to attend family friendly bonding events (circus, baseball, theater..).
Our Military Kids Inc. is an organization that supports children of deployed military personnel. They are a refreshing group as they offer the children opportunities to participate in unique programs or their own chosen activities. They not only offer, they cover the bill!! Three of my four children were able to benefit from the organization. (The 4th was only a toddler at the time.)
Our Military Kids is a great organization because they are leaders in providing fun "distractions" while their beloved parent or parents serve in the US Military.
Our Military Kids is a wonderful non-profit, almost six years ago my father was deployed to Afghanistan and they awarded me a grant for art school. This program helped me and my other siblings cope with the stress of our father being in a combat zone, the ability to participate in an extra-cirricular activity made a large difference in my life. The people of Our Military Kids are always caring and eager to help others making them a strong and dedicated non-profit. They are always willing to listen and will guide you step by step through the process of applying for and receiving grants. Thank you Our Military Kids, and keep up the great work!
This is an outstanding organization that offers great support to the families of deployed Military members. I've gotten more support from them since I've been in Kuwait than I have from my Unit who is stateside and is supposed to check on my son/family on a monthly basis. My family has yet to hear from anyone in my Unit.
My husband deployed September of 2010. It was a rough time for all of us. My oldest daughter was starting Kindergarten, but since she didn't go full time, we had a lot of time on our hands. I was directed to Our Military Kids, by my FRG leader. Once I filled out the form, Kailey was approved almost instantly. We were able to get her into a Swim and Gymanstics school. She was able to have some fun, and it made the time go by a little quicker for us. When the six months were up, we tried again and got approved a second time for a Rock Climbing Camp. My daughter is so shy, but she blossomed and found a passion in rock climbing. Now, it's something that her and her Daddy can share now that he is home. We both are so proud of her, but I think Daddy is in awe that his 6 year old has become quite the climber.
While I was deployed to Iraq with the US Army in 2009-2010, Our Military Kids awarded grants my three oldest children. My oldest daughter was able to participate in a developmental swim program, my son was able to attend Boy Scout Camp and my middle daughter was able to have a tutor for math and reading assistance.
When a Soldier deploys, the spouse who is left behind to care for the kids often times has to hire out the tasks that the Soldier would normally do. Things such as mowing the grass, cleaning out the gutters, raking leaves and others are all tasks that I did when I was home. During my deployment, my wife had to hire people to do many of those tasks.
To cover these expenses, many military familes must cut back financially in other areas. Most of the time, the first cuts are to kid's activities. This is the easiest place to cut expenses, but in emotional terms, it is the most costly. The kids of deployed military members need continuity. They need to maintain their activities as an outlet and a place to connect with friends.
As a result of the Our Military Kids grants, my oldest daughter and my son were able to stay engaged in activities where their friends were participating. My middle daughter was able to get help with school work that I normally gave and which my wife did not have the time to give. My wife was able to have some relief and care for the baby.
When a military member is deployed, the emotional stress on a military family is significant from just worrying about their safety. Adding financial worry and disrupting the kid's routines makes it even more difficult. Thanks to the wonderful service that Our Military Kids provides, a service that I am not aware of being provided by any other organization or the military, they are making the long periods apart and the stress a lot more manageable for military families.
Me and my sisters got a grant for art when my daddy was deployed in Afghanistan. We got to go to art lessons while he was far away. I got a really nice pin, bracelet, dogtags, and lots of fun stuff telling me that I helped my daddy by serving too. Thank you Our Military Kids! I love my art lesson.
While I was deployed, this program provided two grants which afforded my daughter the opportunity to go with her school's chorus and band class to Orlando, FL and to New York City. She gained valuable experiences as a result of these field trips. I recommend to anyone I know who is about to be deployed to look into this program. Our Military Kids is very efficient and professional when trying to help. Additionally, once I returned from the deployment my familiy was given the opportunity to attend a Baltimore Orioles game and watch the game from the club level. We would have never experienced that if it were not for the Our military kids. Please endorse Our Military Kids so that they may continue to help others.
Our children were given an awesome chance to do what they love most. Our daughters felt grateful that someone besides their family appreciated the scarifice they make too. Our Military Kids is the very best. We are so grateful. Thank you! Ssgt. Trevino & family
I have 4 children and 3 have benefited from receiving grants for activities of their choice. They are very fast and answered all of my questions so that the paper work went right through. Thank you so much for the availability of these grants to help the time pass a bit quicker until Dad comes back home!
Last year my husband left for a year in Afghanistan. It was our first deployment experience as a family and it was tough. My eldest child with special needs (Williams Syndrome) had a very hard time understanding what was going on, while my youngest boy suffered much anxiety and stress. Our Military Kids Inc gave both my children the opportunity to escape the stress, have fun and learn through two different activities- horse riding and gymnastics. Both our boys were very proud of their achievements and were always very excited to tell Daddy about what they had been up to when the chance arose.
An amazing organization that helps not only the children but the whole family through a deployment. Thank you!
Our Military Kids made my kids feel special at a time when nothing made them feel that way. My husband has deployed to Kuwait two times and both times with the help of Our Military Kids, my kids were able to still be involved in the sports that they love. My son Tristan Fissette recently won Our Military Kid of the Year. We were treated like royalty. I love this company and what they do for children is priceless.
I have four daughters who have very busy lives. They each enjoy dance and many other things. With their father deployed, life gets more complicated and sometimes more expensive. Daycare costs go up and keeping the girls busy and happy can get challenging and expensive. Our Military Kids was so easy to participate in. My girls each got a large envelope thanking them for their sacrifices as their father serves this country and they felt so special. The grant received is paying for their dance classes.
My husband has been deployed for 13 months. He is a reservist and we have never been through a deployment before. We live 100 miles from his base and have not been connected to the military support structures. His deployment pay is less than 1/2 of our family's typical family income so, things got really tight and very stressful while he was gone. I found Our Military Kids a few months ago and was amazed at what they do. This great organization gives activity scholarships for children of deployed soldiers! My three children EACH received a scholarship that is paying for 6 months of piano lessons for them. Deployments are hard on every one, but there are few supports for the children. This fantastic organization honors our children. We could not have afforded to continue with piano lessons for each of them during the deployment without these scholarships. Music is very important to our family and we are SO very grateful that we have been the recipients of such generosity and thoughtfulness! THANK YOU!
