Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Human Service Organizations, Human Services

Mission: Mission Guatemala Inc., is a faith-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to help meet the basic needs and improve the quality of life of under-served Guatemalan people through health, education and nutrition initiatives and missionary service.

Geographic areas served: San Andrés Semetabaj, Guatemala and surrounding communities

Programs: Medical Clinic – Mission Guatemala operates a medical clinic 5 days a week in the community of San Andrés Semetabaj. Patients pay a small fee for consultation with the doctor and have access to any needed medicines at a greatly-reduced cost. Mission Guatemala works to ensure that no one is denied access to the doctor due to a lack of resources.

Eye Clinic – In 2015, Mission Guatemala was excited to be able to open an optometrist’s office at our clinic space in San Andrés, thanks to the help of Dr. Alisha McAfee, who also served as the clinic's first optometrist. The eye clinic is fully equipped to provide high-quality care including complete eye exams, new eyeglasses, visual health evaluations and a complete selection of eye medications, and all services are provided at a reduced and affordable rate.

Nutrition Programs – According to the World Food Programme, 47 percent of children in Guatemala suffer from chronic malnutrition, which is the highest rate in all of Latin America and the Caribbean and one of the highest rates in the world. Over the years, Mission Guatemala has worked to help combat this through our nutrition programs, which are organized with community collaboration.

• Full-Time Nutrition Centers –Mission Guatemala operates two school nutrition centers in the San Andrés Semetabaj area, one providing a hearty mid-morning snack and the other a nutritious lunch each school day. Mission Guatemala provides the ingredients for the meal as well as a staff cook to supervise the members of the community that participate in each day's meal preparation. For the past 6 years, the daily lunch program has been located in the community of Nueva Esperanza, but beginning in July 2017, will be moving to the community of Choquec. This daily meal is supported by Mission Guatemala's child sponsorship program. Mission Guatemala's daily snack program is located in the Escuela Kikoten elementary school in San Andrés Semetebaj, where the school's 120 students each receive a hearty, nutritious snack each morning.

• "Como Saludable" Wednesday Lunch Program – Through our “Como Saludable” (Eat Healthy) program, 781 students in 7 rural public elementary schools receive a hearty and nutritious meal once a week, with Mission Guatemala providing the ingredients and supervision, and the parents and teachers from the community cooking and serving the meals.

• "Niños Chispudos" Early Childhood Nutrition Program – While our full-time nutrition centers and Wednesday lunch programs help school-aged children, they do not address malnutrition in children who are not yet old enough to attend school. During a child’s critical early years of development, the effects of malnutrition can be especially devastating, leading to stunting, anemia, and chronic infections and sickness.

For this reason, Mission Guatemala coordinates the "Niños Chispudos" (Kids With Spark) Early Childhood Nutrition Program which utilizes the Chispuditos® food product. Chispuditos® is a soy/corn based atol, or porridge, developed by The Mathile Institute in order to provide a daily nutritional supplement for children in Guatemala. Our "Niños Chispudos" program is open to all mothers with children aged 6 months to 6 years old, and provides Chispuditos® as well as free medical care for their children at Mission Guatemala's medical clinics. In addition, any young children suffering from malnutrition who are treated in our clinic are referred by the doctor to the "Niños Chispudos" program.

I recently returned from my second trip as a volunteer for Mission Guatemala. Our team of ten had a wonderful experience. Personally, I was inspired by my team and the staff of Mission Guatemala. This organization has expanded beyond the medical clinic, continuing to add programs that are lifting up communities in this area of Guatemala. Every day we saw how the people in these communities trusted and appreciated the leadership of MG, welcomed our team of volunteers and committed there own efforts to help in achieving the goals of MG. I highly recommend Mission Guatemala if you are looking for a volunteer experience or donating to a very worthwhile organization.

I have had the opportunity to serve Mission Guatemala on 4 different trips. The staff and accommodations far exceed any expectations. The projects are well organized and the construction staff are very patient and knowledgeable. Mission Guatemala offers a variety of services to the community and the people residing there. They offer a medical clinic and eye clinic with pharmacy on site, sewing and computer classes, a feeding program, scholarship for education program and much more.I highly recommend this organization if you are interested in a mission trip or a nonprofit to support.

Mission Guatemala was a wonderful experience for my first time and I look forward to other trips. The staff took excellent care of all our needs even after our volunteer time was complete. The work being done by Mission Guatemala has made an impact in many lives and I am honored to have been a small part this past week. I could write a novel on the hospitality of the staff and community families we met while there. The children LOVE the MG staff and it showed on their faces that they loved the children too. The clinic, feeding program, stove projects, pharmacy program are just a sample of wht this wonderful organization provides for many communities and families. Thank you for all that you do.

We just returned to Indiana from Guatemala after experiencing a week of sharing stories, work, and laughter with the most devoted people I have ever met. The Mission Guatemala staff, work day and night to make all volunteers comfortable and knowledgeable of the project they are working on and who the people are that you are giving your gift of work to. I had a personal experience with the Clinic and the doctor and her staff took great care of me and had me feeling normal again in just one day. They were able to test my blood, give me medication and examine me all in just a few hours. Without the Clinic and lab facilities that Mission Guatemala provides, my experience would have taken days. Thank you so much for the opportunity to work side by side with the team and meet such caring people, who expect nothing but appreciate everything. God Bless Mission Guatemala.

We have been a financial supporters of Mission Guatemala for several years. This year we were able to see our dollars in action. Our trip was well organized and every detail was considered. The River House and grounds were relaxing and the food was wonderful. I can't say enough about the staff, especially the leadership of David Burns, and the effort to allow us to interact with community members and to work on projects that will benefit these families.

Our team of ten from Newburgh United Methodist Church just completed a week of love, labor and community with Mission Guatemala. This was my fifth trip to Mission Guatemala and each new visit enriches the experience. We have developed lasting relationships with the staff and work crews that supervise the projects we do. The people of Guatemala that we serve have a trust and respect for Mission Guatemala that is apparent. The people are engaged and involved with the staff and the volunteers who work with them. The projects are their projects, not just something that someone else thinks they need! I would highly recommend this experience for teams of any age or skill level.

Just spent 8 days with Mission Guatemala working on restrooms for the school in Caliaj Tecpan. This was my fourth trip with MG and I will keep coming as long as I am able. The staff of MG have become family to me. The joy of the children, the hard working, friendly Mayan workers, the accommodations, the healthy, delicious meals, and the fellowship are impossible to adequately describe. My experiences have changed my life and renewed my spirit.

This was our 1st time working with Mission Guatemala and I cannot say enough positive things about them! The staff is incredible. They made us feel welcome and really spent time getting to know us, and vice versa, during the meals we shared together. Communication from staff to our team was excellent. The River House is beautiful and peaceful. There is plenty of space for group devotional time or if you need to slip away to spend time alone and re-center, you can find a quiet nook somewhere. Also, there is HOT water, which (from previous experience) is hard to find. This year marked my 3rd year of mission trips to Guatemala and this year's trip was my favorite. I came back inspired, strengthened in my faith and renewed in my spirit. The only downside is having to wait a whole year before I can return.

Our week with Mission Guatemala was one of the best mission experience I've had in almost 25 years of leading teams! The staff was organized, welcoming, gracious, and patient. Mission Guatemala is intentional and thoughtful in their work, seeking to 'do no harm' while 'doing good' and loving God and the neighbor. Accommodations were comfortable and the food was delicious. I loved the spirit of the people and organization--would definitely recommend and hope to bring a team again!

Great people, great trip, and very nice place to stay and work. My only complaint is that I do not feel like we worked as much as I wanted too. We did learn a lot about the culture and such which is wonderful, but I came to work and do not feel that we did as much work as I hoped to.

We have just returned from a week long work camp organized by Mission Guatemala. We received helpful guidance all through the planning process, and were well cared for all through the course of the week. The leadership is top-notch and the foremen at the work site are skilled and patient, allowing each of our 18 participants, from youth through senior adults, to feel useful . We worked hard, yet had time to explore the land and learn more about the culture. This is my 3rd time going to Mission Guatemala and I look forward to leading a team again next year.

The Mission Guatemala staff was amazing... always there to help my team’s needs and there to encourage us in various areas throughout the week. I felt like I was there for a purpose and really enjoyed/helped make progress with the construction project even though I was inexperienced in that area.

Mission Guatemala was a great experience for our Daughter in June of 2016 and for me as well in Oct. 2017.
Mission Guatemala impressed me in how they take care of the Mayan people on so many levels!

Had a wonderful time, great accomidations, good food, was a wonderful place to use my god given talents to help those in a remote area of the world, most often forgotten by us.
The river house is a beautiful place, I photographed over 60 native plants and their flowers for my 88 year old mother to see, as well as my own enjoyment. The local people and those with whom I worked with were warm, friendly, and appreciative of our team. We made many friends in the week spent at Mission Guatemala. Mr. David Pugh

I just returned form a Mission Guatemala work project (pouring concrete columns for a regional teachers' building) and our group of 12 wholeheartedly feels that the projects Mission Guatemala works on are chosen in a way that shares the most good as decided by the community leaders. All of their programs -- nutrition, scholarships and construction -- are constantly reviewed to make sure they are effective, needed and supported locally. Well done good and faithful servants!

Mission Guatemala was an extremely organized nonprofit that took the time to teach our team about the culture of Guatemala. Members of the Mission Guatemala team went out of their way to welcome our team and make us feel like one big family. This nonprofit went above and beyond and I cannot wait to return to Casa del Rio.
