My 14 year old daughter has been a volunteer for a year and a half. This organization is built on family values, inclusion at all levels, motivation to show that everything is possible and that the Rough Riders are there to support in ever way possible. We are humbled by the talent and strength of each athlete, their families and the entire support staff. Proud to be a part of this organization.
Our family joined the roughriders 9yrs ago. My son maybe the athlete but our entire family is a part of the team. This sport and team have becone a way of life. This organization has changed all our lives for the better. It has introduced us all to amazing people we could not imagine our lives without. We are there to celebrate the good times and support in the rough times.
We have been a part of the roughriders family for 7yrs. I say we because my son may be the athlete on the team but our entire family is a part of the team/family. The roughriders provide a place to allow abilities to shine, confidence and independence to grow all while participating in a sport they love!! This organization has changed all our lives in too many ways to list!
The Long Island Sled Hockey is more than a team of athletes. It's a family consisting of players, coaches and families. We all play an important part in making this team not only winners out on the ice but winners when it comes to caring about each other. The saying goes "There is no I in team" and that certainly applies to our team. We are loyal not only to the game but to each other. My son has been a part of this team for over ten years and, in addition to learning to participate in a sport, he has experienced a camaraderie that will last a life time. In addition, I have also formed friendships that I cherish. The support from this team is phenomenal. As they say "You have to be in it to win it" and we are certainly winners on all aspects of being a team!!!
My son has been a part of the Long Island Sled Hockey for 15 years. He is able to participate in a sport that is geared towards individuals with different types of disabilities. Another aspect of this organization is the many friends my son has made through the years. Words cannot express the positive reinforcement that this organization creates for these athletes. As the saying goes "all for one and one for all"!!! This is a team that cares for and about each other.
My two daughters have been volunteering this past year with the team and they have found the sled hockey program to be very well organized and operated. The atheletes in the program are tremendous and it is wonderful to witness how truly appreciative they are to be part of the Long Island Sled Hockey team. We look forward to being part of this organization for a long time.
Watching these 'kids' on the ice is truly inspiring. No matter what their age, sex or disability, they are totally engaged in playing for their team. And, I might add, they're playing tough. No quarters given. They are encouraged and pushed by their coaches and fans whom you can tell really "love" them. The Long Island Sled Hockey group is an outstanding non-profit group.
Spirited young people overcoming their handicaps with joy and enthusiasm.
I brought my 2 grandchildren to the game. We bought Tee Shirts that we’re for sale. We brought along markers and my grandchildren had all the players sign their shirt. You see in a child’s heart and eyes no one is different. We all do according to our capabilities. I have never been so humbled as to watch this team and families welcome us into their hearts. The spirit and gratitude that surrounds these games is miraculous. All monies donated goes 100% fund for the players to play. If they did not have donations they would not be able to play. Let alone with medical cost for all these families. If ever a cause to donate this is it. Every $ makes a difference. Let’s support these Hockey players capabilities. Ever $ makes a difference. Watching these games teaches you gratitude and humbleness. Donate and come watch the games. You will be glad you did
I have been a part of this organization for a little over a year, first as a supporter and now as a player. Long Island Sled Hockey has changed my life many ways - it has open my eyes to the world of adaptive sports and given me a second family. Everyone in this organization, from the volunteers, the parents, the players, are incredibly special people and do an amazing job making people with disabilities feel like they belong.
I've been a part of this organization for close to 15 years now and it has truly changed my life. My teammates and the everyone else who makes the organization tick have became a big family and every one is willing to help. The RoughRiders hold a special place in my heart ~Vinny

My fiance' is one of the team's goalies and we have been involved with LISH for 2 seasons. It has been life changing to say the least. It is so much more than a team, it is a family. It is a place where everyone can be themselves, everyone is accepted, everyone is supported. The players and their families celebrate your successes...the players and their families hold you up through trials and tribulations. It is an organization like no other I have ever been a part of. I am proud to say that I am a part of such a special "family". Oh and as a bonus we get to watch the team play some exciting sled hockey games too :)
I have been involved with this organization for quite some time. In the past two seasons I became the head coach. I have never seen a more close knit team. Everyone helps each other. It's a family of all from the players to the families to the staff. Every player enjoys the comararderi and gets off the ice smiling whether it's win or lose. Great organization and I am proud to be it.
I have never seen a group of happier hockey players. Whether they win or lose they are all together sharing smiles. The organization flips the bill for all equipment and travel so these athletes can play. The families of these players and the whole organization are on big family. If you are an a differently-abled athlete and want to play hockey you are more than welcome to try it out. Great group of people who run this organization, from the President to the board to the volunteers and the coaching staff who run this program.
I myself, as the coach of this team, have never seen a more admirable team and organization and am proud to be part of them.
Being apart of this team has been life changing for me for my first time playing organized Sports. And this team is truly a family amd has been such a blessing to be on this team
I've been a part of the Long Island Roughriders for 3 years now. When I started playing hockey, I had no idea what the sport was. I was immediately drawn to it because it felt great to be part of a team. The camaraderie and friendships I've made over the last few years have made for some of the best experiences of my life. The team always has each other's backs win or lose. I've learned valuable lessons about teamwork and selflessness over the years that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I owe all of this to the way that this organization is run and to the people and families that are all involved.
I am a veteran who served 5yrs in the United States Army. In 2011, before returning home from Afghanistan, I suffered a spinal injury that took me out of the fight. After, I didn't think there would be much I could do sports wise. During my rehab, I was introduced to this sport for therapeutic reasons and was hooked immediately. Along the way of playing other teams, I met and joined the Long Island Sled Hockey team. The experience since has been rewarding. The Long Island Sled Hockey team has become a huge inspiration in my life. They have given me the opportunity to play a sport and be part of a team that supports each individual with any disability, visible or not, on and off the ice. They have created a chance and challenge to make every player push themselves harder and prove that disabilities are not going to interfere with personal success. Every player comes off the ice a winner guaranteed! The best part of being on this team is that the players, the families of, the volunteers and the board members have become an extended family.

What a great program for athletes with both physical and mental challenges. Once on the ice all of there playing ability makes ones disability become nonexistent for a time. Wins and losses are rewarded in hugs, smiles and tears for all involved. NEVER SAY NEVER TO A CHALLENGE!!
this organization has been one of the best things to ever happen to me. not only im I able to play a sport I love but I get to do it with a great group of guys and girls with some amazing loving families. I'm also able to meet so many other amazing people from the different teams we play and build a bond with everyone
I have been on this team for going on 5+ years now and i have never had the urge to quit and stop playing..thats only because this team and the people that help with this team have amazing commitment and determenation to make everything better and accesible for everyones needs
I have been playing for the team for the last 6 years now and im glad i joined..everyone makes it feel like its one big happy family
Had my disability for almost 2 1/2 years this program was set to help people with disability to show that it's still possible to play sports and stay active. I've been playing sled hockey for 1yr and I love it...
This group provides exercise and social activities for the handicapped of all ages I at little or no cost to them
I became disabled 12 years ago. Before then I was a very active in sports and physical conditioning. About seven years ago I head about Long Island Sled Hockey. I joined the team 5 years ago. Joining with this fine group of handicapped individuals is one of the few organized athletic activities available to me . The last five years playing with this team has given me something to look forward to and has helped to remove the depression that often overtakes my thoughts . This non profit has had a major positive impact on my life in many ways
I'm really happy with LISH. Not only do they provide opportunity for any person with a disability a chance to play sled hockey, but they welcome new players with open arms. They believe that anyone can play sled hockey, and work hard to facilitate each players' successes. I've skated with them for five seasons, and find it incredibly rewarding.
As an athlete, I could not recommend this group any higher. I've gotten progressively and markedly better since joining the team, and am excited to see more and more members join in. The kindness and gratitude I have simply playing on the team is immeasurable.
This organization's greatest benefit is removing the barrier of playing sport for people with disabilities. The costs associated with having a player just to be on the ice is over $1000. This cost is simply out of reach for many people already dealing with the high costs of living with a disability. I cannot explain how much this is a blessing and a gift.
LI Sled Hockey Inc. works to ensure that this cost is never absorbed by the player. There is plentiful ice time, and the athletes work their hearts out to get to be better and better. The representatives also work hard to get the name out and known in the community, which helps grow the program even more.
