While looking for an older dog to bring into our home, we came across Lily's and we are so thankful we did. They had quite a few wonderful senior dogs who were in all stages of transition from their previous situations. From the very first, we fell in love with our Annie. We are positive the relaxed, home-like atmosphere at Lily's made a huge difference in her ability to adjust to our home. The care she received there also assured we went home with a dog as healthy as she could be given her age and past.
Annie is happy and well adjusted with us and we are so grateful for the love she has brought to us and to Lily's for making that possible.
I love volunteering at Lily's Legacy. I have volunteered at other animal shelters, and this one is by far the best. The "campus" has lots of space--a big hillside field, a smaller "dog park" and a meet-and-greet area for potential adopters. All are fenced in, giving the resident dogs the ability to wander around, run, or chase a ball. There are lots of dog beds in the barn, as well as a couple of sofas, plenty of choices for the dogs (and volunteers) who just want to hang out and relax. The kennels are indoor/outdoor, allowing the dogs to get some fresh air from time to time. It is truly a joy to be part of this volunteer community, and I look forward to spending time there.
I am honored to have adopted two different Lily's Legacy dogs. When "Missy" came to Lily's Legacy after her owner died, she was shut down. The care given by all the volunteers helped her transition into our family beautifully. She became a devoted companion and faithful friend.
The second dog we adopted had lost her canine sibling in addition to her home due to a family illness. Shy and suffering from separation anxiety, the volunteers worked with "Trixie" to boost her confidence and trust. She too became a part of our family, blessing us with unconditional love. We are so grateful to Lily's Legacy for saving these wonderful dogs.
Lily's is phenomenal. Every new rescued senior dog that comes to Lily's gets the very best care and is thoroughly vetted before being available for adoption. Each senior receives superlative vet care. Alice Mayn, (the Founder) and the dedicated team of Lily's volunteers treat each dog as if it were his or her own. The sanctuary grounds are incredibly gorgeous, located in the bucolic Petaluma countryside. It is clean and safe. There is plenty of space for runs and walks and each dog has plenty of kennel room. And the barn is a fun place where they get to hang out and socialize too. Lily’s devoted crew of volunteers ensures that each dog gets the full attention they deserve -- not only with basics - walks and food -- but with love. Lilys’ cuddle club has volunteers who come simply to give belly rubs and affection for each rescue. I can't say enough about Lily's. They do a great job of re-homing their rescues with house visits to ensure each dog gets a forever home filled with love and stability.
I had recently lost my senior dog and was searching for a new rescue dog when I learned about Lily’s Legacy. A border collie that they were caring for instantly caught my eye. I was excited to meet him but did not expect the wonderful experience I would have during the adoption process. Lily’s Legacy is very thorough in learning about the families who adopt and it’s clear that they are also thorough in how they care for their available dogs. I was treated to a relaxing afternoon where I got to ask questions, introduce my resident dog to the border collie and take him for a walk. The whole experience gave a little magic to a process that has felt rushed in the past. By the end of my visit, I was certain that I found my dream dog. The whole experience from beginning to end was a delight and I have already recommended Lily’s Legacy to many friends. Finding good homes for large senior dogs is hard and I’m proud to open my home to our Marshall. Thank you Lily’s Legacy for our dog and for an adoption experience that my family will treasure.
For the past three years my husband and I have volunteered here. I'm always impressed with the number of dogs that are adopted and get to live out their lives with a family that loves them. You would think senior dogs would be overlooked time and time again but not with Lily's. I fall a little bit in love with each dog I get to take care of but it's so heartwarming to be able to say goodbye because I know they're going to their forever home. The sanctuary is on a beautiful piece of heaven on earth and every dog gets personalized, loving attention from a great crew of volunteers. I'm honored to be a volunteer there. Here are some photos my husband took of the property and the pups. Beautiful right?
We have volunteered at Lily's since October 2015. We began in hopes of healing our broken hearts after losing our special pup after 14 years of unconditional love. Lily's is the perfect place for senior dogs to find their new family or to become a part of the Lily's family. There is always love to be found. 11 months ago a very handsome Australian Shepard came to Lily's and a month later he came home with us and we can't imagine our life without Raider. We will always volunteer at Lily's and now love being a Lily's adopter.
We volunteer at Lily's and it is hard to say that we 'volunteer' when we are really just lucky enough to get to spend time on a beautiful property with some wonderful dogs and people. It is so gratifying to spend time with these wonderful creatures and to see that even doing a little has such an impact.
I had the great pleasure of volunteering for Lily's Legacy for a period of time. There is so much compassion and love and support given to these seniors and the pups thrive. Alice has created such a super, loving environment. The dogs barn is filled with couches and dog beds and they get to choose where they want to lay down. They each have their own kennel to sleep in. The volunteers walk the dogs, love on them, clean...they willingly do anything that is needed....the first priority is always the pups. This is a wonderful place to "give back". If you are looking to do something very special and give to your community, call Lily's Legacy.
I went to a gathering at Dairydell in Petaluma several years ago and Lily's Legacy was there with some of their senior pups. I had lost my 10 year old Lab, and at this time I had a young Labrador pup. My heart went out to Lily's for all they do for senior dogs that people seem to forget about.
They have become my special place for donaions and I am hoping to become a volunteer as soon as I can! They are the best!
Lily's Legacy is a gift to abandoned and neglected senior dogs. They are a rescue with a gentle spirit and big hearts. This rescue is the place where your donor dollars go directly to the care and comfort of the lucky senior dogs that go from rags to riches in the care at Lily's Legacy.
Wonderful organization that helps the older, larger forgotten dog population. They are there 100% for the dogs. The volunteer staff and Alice are kind, compassionate and knowledgeable.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I will always have a Lily's Legacy dog in our home. You just can't beat perfection!
I have always loved dogs and my heart goes out particularly to the senior dogs. They are so sweet and loving and it can be heart-wrenching when they end up in shelters during what should be their golden years. Now that I have a little more time to volunteer, I chose Lily's Legacy because I have always wanted to help find homes for these sweet senior dogs that deserve only the best. The moment I walked into Lily's Legacy and interacted with these gentle spirits, I felt grateful and hopeful that I have played a little part in making their remaining days happy ones filled with love and plenty of hugs.
After volunteering at Lily's Legacy for a year, my wife and I adopted a 10 year old Border Collie (Cruz) from Lily's Legacy in July of 2015. Throughout the whole adoption process the volunteers at Lily's Legacy were incredibly supportive and helped us find an appropriate trainer that would help us work with Cruz. I am constantly amazed by how love transforms these dogs. Moreover, the diligence Lily's Legacy shows in finding the perfect forever home for these dogs is commendable.
As a visitor to Lily's Legacy on multiple occasions, I found that the amount of love that goes into caring for these dogs and finding their forever home to be astounding. The volunteers that run this organization truly pour their hearts out for these abandoned or surrendered dogs. This nonprofit fulfills a vital role in making sure that dogs of all ages are treated with the love and affection they deserve.
Before retiring I was a senior manager in the animal welfare field for 15 years. When I moved to Sonoma County in 2010 I looked for local agencies to support with donations and my time. I found Lily's and looked into their programs, management and financial integrity. Are they an organization of all volunteers that consistently put animal welfare first and demonstrate effective relationships with all stakeholders? Yes!
Prior to recently retiring, I worked in pet animal welfare (Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation, then ASPCA) for 15 years managing both animal and customer service operations. I appreciate the challenge faced by homeless senior pets. When I moved to Sonoma County I checked out where I wanted to volunteer my time and donate resources. Lily's Legacy was a perfect choice for me. The team demonstrates compassion and takes excellent care of the dogs they intake. As the business plan progresses enabling LLSDS to save more lives, I am delighted to volunteer to walk dogs (hug them...that's the best), maintain kennels....whatever the team (2 and 4 legged) needs.
While i haven't been able to be a foster with Lily's yet, I know several people who have been and they have the most wonderful things to say about this sweet rescue! I love hearing how detailed they are in finding the best homes for their dogs. Wonderful place to support any way you can!
Lilly's has saved several seniors from a shelter I volunteer at. They help so many and save so many
My husband and I have adopted 3 seniors from Lily's over the past 4 years . The love and support these seniors get from
Alice and volunteers until they can find a perfect family match is phenomenal We have gotten so much satisfaction adopting seniors from Lilys .
Lily's Legacy is the best! I found out about this wonderful organization at Dairydell in Petaluma about 5 years ago. My husband thinks one dog is enough, so until he changes his mind, I will continue supporting Lily's through donations and sharing their story with friends on Facebook and by word of mouth.
My husband and I have adopted 3 dogs from Lily's Legacy, and will again, without a doubt. People have often asked why we adopt old dogs: "you won't have them very long and it's to hard to say goodbye"- well, yes, that's true. But elderly dogs are the BEST. Each of our dogs, Clyde, Samantha and now Cali, have had their funny little ways- each stubborn in their own manner. But that stubbornness was born from life's experiences, from old age wisdom, from time on this earth learning how to cope with whatever their little dog lives had encompassed- and now it was our turn to enjoy the rest of their lives. Alice is by far the most compassionate and loving person and it is evident that with every ounce of her being that she loves her dogs and wants the very best for them. And we benefit!
