AKA: Rikki's Refuge. Rikki's is an amazing place, taking in every species of animal, animals that wouldn't survive elsewhere because they are elderly or have special needs or because they aren't a "typical" animal for a shelter. Rikki's takes them in and loves them all, giving them a forever home or helping them find one.

I first found out about Life Unlimited of Virginia, Inc. (Rikki's) when I had a cat (Bogart)with feline leukemia for whom I had to find a home. I wanted to find a place that would be his forever home since I was unable to provide that for him. All my dealings with Rikki's, were great. Timely responses to all my questions and conerns. The people who I dealt with were aware that it was not easy to have to surrender Bogart but it was the right thing to do for him.

I am a volunteer and a supporter of Life Unlimited, aka Rikkis Refuge. As someone who has been a volunteer in wildlife rehab/rescue and pet animal rescue for thirty years, I am all too familiar with the problems that can plague such organizations. To anyone thinking of supporting this worthwhile organization, I say give as much as you can and know that every penny, literally every penny of your donation will go to the care, feeding, housing, medicating, and resocialization of the animals they take in from other shelters that are unable or unwilling to care for those animals considered not adoptable.

My family visited Rikki's a few weeks ago. We were greatly impressed! The volunteers were the heart of the refuge. Their kindness, generosity and love for their animal family members was evident in their actions. No matter how hot, tired or stressed they were, each volunteer greeted us with waves or a smile. Even the dogs and cats greeted us! Each of the animals have a story and a history. They are each survivors. A tentative, hard-earned, new-found trust shone from their eyes. They have a home. They have food. They have LOVE. This is what we took away with us after our visit. We found the Spirit of Rikki's!

Without Rikki's we would have never had our dogs, Rachel, Schnappsy and Miss Daisy. All were old when we adopted them, and Rachel is going strong after 9 years with us. She loves life. Miss Daisy has been with us for a year. We would encourage everyone to adopt an older animal. There is no greater love.

My wife and I are part of Big Brothers Big Sisters and have taken our Little Brothers to Rikki's. While a bit stand-offish with some animals, it has been a way to help overcome their fear of animals. Rikki's is a wonderful refuge that gives animals an extended, safe life. It's a great place (that, of course, needs more funding)!! Bobby & Sally Anderson

My husband & I adopted "Dutchy" in 2003 from Rikki's. She is now 12 years old (we think) & is the sweetest dog we have ever owned. Her brother "Jack" loves her too & we can't imagine what life would be like if my husband had not gone out to Rikki's that day to see her. Even though she was skiddish of men, she went right up to my husband & he knew we had to adopt her. For my son's first birthday in 2006, we decided to have all the guests donate to Rikki's instead of buying birthday presents. It was such a joy to see how generous our friends & family were!!! I am so glad that Rikki's does what they do & hope that more shelters can do the same. Thanks Rikki's!

i found rikki's refuge when i became ill and was unable to care for a feral cat i had been caring for. They took my cat and have been caring for him for several years now. They were recommended by my local humane society. I could not be more pleased with the work that they do for the animals in their care.

I found Rikki's Refuge when I tried to find a "no kill" home for two dogs I loved after their owner cruelly sent them to the local animal shelter and branded them as vicious. My plea for help was greeted with absolute kindness and understanding from the management of the Refuge. Although already having so many animals to care for, they gave these adorable dogs a new life! It was a joy to visit the Refuge and see so many animals living happily together with people who care so much for them. During my first tour, a big sheep took a liking to me and followed me throughout the tour! It is truly a unique and wonderful haven for unwanted, injured and sick animals for their entire lives! I will never forget them and will always help financially as I am able to do.

Rikki's is an amazing all-species sanctuary, taking in every type of animal. The animals are assured of a safe life, with great care and lots of love while there. Rikki's also does a lot of educational things, letting children and other know that it's not a good idea to buy chicks and ducks for Easter,. Rikki's is also a tireless advocate for spaying and neutering, which they can speutering This is also part of their educational effort, explaining that dogs and cats need to be speutered, so that there will be no more homeless pets. I have been a fan of Rikki's ever since they took in my aged Shepherd-Husky ten years ago, and they also took in my behavior-challenged cat six years ago. There was no way I would have put these animals to sleep, and Rikki's provided a safe haven for them. Because of this, I have been fairly large donor every year. There need to be more places like Rikkki's, so that homeless and abandoned and injured and mistreated animals have a safe and loving place to live out the rest of their lives.

I have been involved with Rikki's Refuge for close to 10 years. It is a wonderful place that has helped me much more over the years than I can imagine that I have helped them. During difficult times in my life I have been able to get "out of myself" while helping out. The wonderful work done at the Refuge gave me a sense of hope and belonging when things were not going well in my life. They not only save animal lives but benefit and strenghten human lives. They have helped me in ways they will never know and I love and thank them for that. I encourage everyone who loves/respects animals to volunteer or donate to this worthy group.

You will meet some of the hardest working and most dedicated humanitarians devoted to the care of forgotten ferals. The volunteers give considerable time maintaining the enclosures for the cats and providing care and feeding for the numerous animals at the Refuge. The work seems daunting and frankly overwhelming looking in from the outside, but everyone there seems to find the energy to perserve due to their obvious love of the animals and love of and belief in the work they are doing. Inspiring!

Dear Sirs, Madam, My name is Debra Barrett. I have been a volunteer for Rikkis Refuge aka Life Unlimited of Va for the past 5-6 years. While I was a volunteer for another animal organization I was told about Rikkis and how wonderful they were. One day, I rode down and was amazed!I was given a personal tour but was hooked.I became a volunteer that day! Rikkis is on 367 acres in Orange,Va. We care for over 1200+ animals of 20 species, 400+ being cats. Have you ever seen an animal who is not only broken physcally but also emotionally and their spirit has been shattered? Rikkis restores all of that and more. Each and every animal is cared for and loved on a prsonal level. Some for the first time feel the gentle touch of a human hand gently patting them and speaking softly where in the past was only a slap and a yell.Sometimes it takes months to regain their trust...but that one moment when they wag their tail or purr is nothing that can ever be truly explained. EVery animal is loved and cared for until they are adopted or live out the rest of their lives in peace. N harsh voices, no hitting, no starving, no sleeping in the cold. And do you know HOW all of this is accomplished? By DONATIONS. Yes. By donations, fund raisers, Tours and open houses. The price of admission is a can of or bag of food.Kerry Hilliard i the founder and Executive Director. This is her dream.. and she has made it our dream as well. She has a small dedicated staff and a samall army of dedcated volunteers that ask for food donations, help raise money with fund raisers etc. NO ANIMAL will ever go hungry at Rikkis. NOT EVER AGAIN. Kerry also takes in animals from other "Shelters". Animals that have been deemed unadoptable and are on death row. Several of us are what we call the FERRY GODMOTHERS. We "Ferry" animals from other shelters to Rikkis. THree years ago another volunteer and I were going to split the transport up between an out of state shelter and Rikki's a totally blind cat had bbeen surrendered by i's owner bec the owner was pregnant and didn't want him any more. When I told my husband he said ask Kerry if we can adopt him. When I met the other volunteer and saw this terrified little boy in his carrier my heart melted. I called Kerry and she said CONGRATULATIONS MOMMA! Kelby has been one of our fur children for three years. It was touch and go for several months. He was so angry. He had been betrayed and was not one to trust for a long time. Kelby was deemed unadoptable because he has no eyes.. but to us..he is a priceless treasure. I thank GOD in heaven every day that Kerry Hilliard said YES to taking this fur child and then yes for ua to adopt Kelby. There are so many happy endings becasue of Kerry and Rikkis Refuge. There are also endings that do not end up in adoption but the end is filled with love, and dignity. Rikkis is a unique animal sanctuary, it is truly a little piece of heaven on earth and deserves a little bit of help. Respectfully Submitted, Debra Barrett Volunteer and Bard Member and adoptive pet parent.
