Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Labrador Rescuers (LR) is a 100% volunteer-based, nonprofit organization formed in 2004 to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome stray, abandoned and unwanted Labrador Retrievers and Labrador Retriever mixes, including shelter dogs and dogs relinquished by their owners because of age, health, financial or other reasons. Many dogs who come to LR have medical, surgical and other special needs, which LR provides for through constant fundraising. LR is known for rescuing dogs that other rescues are unable or unwilling to help, and giving the dogs the veterinary care and/or other assistance they need to ready them for adoption. LR's goal is to make it possible for every dog to be adopted into a safe, happy and loving forever home.

Results: Labrador Rescuers has rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed over 4,300 dogs since its formation in 2004.

Target demographics: Labrador Retrievers and Labrador Retriever mixes from shelters and owner relinquishment.

Direct beneficiaries per year: In 2016, Labrador Rescuers rescued 188 dogs and found forever homes for 168 dogs. Labrador Rescuers also provided loving care in permanent foster homes for 13 Lifeboat Labs-dogs whose insurmountable medical conditions and/or age made it difficult for them to find adoptive homes.

Geographic areas served: The Counties of San Diego, Orange, Riverside, and portions of the Counties of San Bernardino and Los Angeles in Southern California

Programs: Rescue, Rehabilitate and Rehome; Second Chances for Senior Dogs; and Lifeboat Labs Hospice Care.

We just adopted our dog, Zeus! The whole process was awesome! Yes, we had to complete a detailed application, which we didn't mind since it shows how Labrador Rescuers is committed to successfully matching their dogs with the right families.
The whole process really did not take long once we decided we were ready. The website with photos and descriptions really gave us a feel for the dogs. Once we saw Zeus' photo, we were hooked.
Our home visit and placement assistance from Rhea Dawn S really helped us to find Zeus. She was upbeat, acted quickly, and was very honest about expectations.
Zeus was fostered and loved by Sandy and Tom R. Zeus was their 20th (!) foster. They, too, were upfront about any potential concerns, and they clearly had Zeus' best future as their focus. They have huge hearts for these dogs.
Thanks, Labrador Rescuers! We will definitely be spreading the word to anyone we know who are looking for a four-legged family member.

Outstanding. Professional. Compassionate.

I have worked with Labrador Rescuers and it's volunteers for many years in co-rescue efforts between they and our group - Independent Labrador Retriever Rescue of SoCal (Indilabrescue).

This dedicated group of volunteers go out of their way to save dogs and provide dignity to each animal - no matter how old, sick, or "un-adoptable" they may be.

The LR officers and volunteers have collaborated with us in a seamless manner further underscoring their commitment to rescue work on a broader scale. This is truly a working rescue and for them, it is all about the dogs.

Lab Rescuers works tirelessly with myriad shelters in what can often be a frustrating, sad, and difficult environment. They manage to maintain and grow the bond and trust with each shelter system which is essential to our efforts.

They also work with potential adoptive families and adoptive families in the most professional and compassionate way possible. It's a tough course to navigate and they do it beautifully.

I am grateful for this group and I deeply value my relationship with them.

We could not possibly be happier, or more thankful for Lab Rescuers! Daisy is the 2nd family member we have adopted from LR and are thrilled and in love already. Lab Rescuers truly cares about all of their dogs, and their forever homes. Daisy is the perfect dog for us, the perfect fit. Her foster family made for a wonderful and easy transition and we are all truly grateful!

14 years ago I adopted a chocolate lab from Lab rescues.
She was the dog of a lifetime and a short while after she passed, I put my name on the list to do the same thing all over again. It was time to put my personal feelings aside and give back to a charity that enhanced my life for 14 years.
Meet Chloe the dog they found for me. The picture speaks for itself.
The Lab rescues charity far exceeded my expectations and is an asset to the communities it serves.

We couldn't recommend them more! We lost our last lab a couple of years earlier and we were finally ready for another. We knew we wanted another lab and checked out some lab rescue facilities in the area, but we liked the people at Labrador Rescuers the best. Our Case Worker and other staff (Foster Parents for example) guided and supported us through the process. They were knowledgeable, professional and friendly. I have to mention that their web site was a big help too, as well as the adoption events. There, we could meet the dogs and Foster Parents...that 'hands on' experience provided critical information needed to make a good choice, and we did. We adopted our 'new' dog March 2016 and couldn't be happier, it's like we've always been together. Honestly, I don't know who's luckier, her or us! Attached are pictures of her first day at her Forever Home. Needless to say, we have recommended Labrador Rescuers every chance we get.

We have rescued two labs from lab rescue. We rescued our Murphy boy in January of 2014 and he was the most lovable thing ever. He fit right it like one of the family. At the time, we had a 14 year old girl named Maggie who we were a little worried about but he was so gentle with her and she taught him the ropes it was great. She passed shortly after and a couple years later I was ready to get another dog, after months of looking on lab rescue I found the one my Bella girl. We brought her home and Murphy and her have been playing every second of the day they are like ying and yang!!! Thank you lab rescue for another miracle. We love her and she is one of the family for sure. Here are a few pictures I have enclosed of Bella and Murphy.

We were lucky enough to have picked Labrescuers to adopt our girls. They came as a bonded pair after their owner had passed. The thing I liked the most about Labrescuers is that they took the time to go to your house and see the type of environment you would be providing for these doggies. They want to make sure your dog will be part of your family and be loved. They were very helpful when I needed advice after Sophie was diagnosed with Arthritis.
I also love that they take in dogs that need medical help or that are senior dogs too. We have had the privilege of adding Gina and Sophie to our family.

We adopted Shaggy after following him several months online. Stacy came out and interviewed us and checked out our residence. She was very encouraging and helpful. We then got to visit Shaggy at his foster home with Sue. We fell in love in love with him immediately. In all of the adoption process, Labrador Rescuers and especially Sue were extremely helpful and informative. Shaggy is everything you could want in a dog and very loving . Susan and Norb

The Lab Rescuers trusted me with my first Lab, Annie, in 2010. She was already 11, a "senior", who went on to become a most beloved visiting "therapy dog" at a nearby nursing home. Other labs have followed and just this weekend the Rescuers trusted me with a fourth "Senior", Stella Bella, who still has years of love to give. Over the years I have met many of the people who make up this wonderful organization - "retrievers" who drive all over Southern California to rescue dogs from bad situations, vets who volunteer their services, foster parents who find room in their homes and hearts for Labs in need of temporary shelter, care and assessment. They do amazing work very well - and they do it for love. Annie, Bailey, Tia, Bella, I and future members of our "pack" are all in debt to the Rescuers.

A year ago we adopted our 2nd dog from Labrador Rescuers, and I want to let everyone know what a wonderful job this rescue does in matching the dogs with the families. We found out the hard way not all rescues go to the trouble to assess their dogs thoroughly enough to place them in families where the adoption will be a success. Lab rescuers is not about the numbers, they are interested in happy endings for both the families and the dogs! When we contacted our volunteer at Lab Rescuers, she didn't think she had a dog that met our needs at the time. But anxious for a dog I was, so I went to their adoption event anyway, but it turns out she was right. She had known us since we got our first lab, and we talked at great length about what was great about that dog, and what went wrong with the other rescue group after our first passed away. Then she was able to keep her eye out and advocate for us when new dogs were coming into their rescue. And that's how we ended up with the current love of our lives, Piper. Although Piper was very timid of new people and dogs when she was first brought in, we put trust in their assessment of her that there was no aggression and that, although she might always be a shy dog, she was a bit freaked out by the whole shelter and transition happening to her. All that has come true.

The book Lab Rescuers provided as part of the adoption was wonderful. Even though we've had dogs before, each one has been different, and there were concrete things in this book that explained how Piper was adjusting that I wouldn't have otherwise known. It helped us learn how to be patient with her settling in, and lead us to other resources - books and trainers- that taught us how to build her confidence and become the wonderful dog that she is. She's still shy when she meets new people because that's just her temperament, but she is curious to meet everyone and quickly becomes their best friend. She's smart and sensitive, and perfect in the house (none of which we can take credit for!). With my husband and two teenage boys, she has a special relationship with each of us, and has definitely stolen our hearts forever.

We tragically lost our 6 year old chocolate lab last Wednesday. In the spirit of life is 10% what happens to you and 90% your reaction, we decided that we needed to make something positive come out of such a terrible situation: to honor our beloved Brooke-Dog, we wanted to rescue another lab.

We looked online and starting making lists of available dogs that we thought would be a good fit for our family, and reached out to several rescue organizations including Lab Rescuers. There was something about Clara on the Lab Rescuers site that really stuck out to me - she seemed like she would be perfect for our family.

I submitted our application on Wednesday evening, was contacted by Michele on Thursday, and had a home visit appt set up for Friday afternoon. When I spoke to Michele on the phone, she understood the grief and emptiness we felt over losing our Brooke-Dog, and our need to do something positive in her honor. When she came to see our home and meet my family, she was very friendly, kind, encouraging, understanding - and she agreed that Clara would have a good home here. She gave me Clara's foster-mom's contact info so I could set up a meeting with her, but also assured me that if we met her and didn't feel connected there was no pressure - there were plenty of labs that needed homes.

I contacted Clara's foster mom, and scheduled a time to meet her on Sunday morning at her home. Her foster mom, Katie Smith, runs a lovely dog training program and boards dogs at her home. When I met with Katie, I saw that Clara was in great hands. She was caring, loving, and had really taken the time to get to know Clara. My kids and I fell in love with Clara immediately. We went home, talked it over as a family, and we all agreed adopting Clara was the right thing to do for our family. I went back up to Clara's foster home the same day and and picked her up. Her foster mom gave me a packet that included all of her information, shots, surgery and behavioral information so we had a head start at making Clara comfortable in our home and part of our family.

Overall, Lab Rescuers was a very professional, very well-run, caring, organization dedicated to giving good homes to dogs. We could not be more pleased with our experience, and more in love with our new dog Clara.

We recently adopted a 4 year old lab mix, Honey, from Lab Rescuers. Our experience was absolutely wonderful, as the LR volunteers were great to work with and very responsive to any of questions we had. We worked with Jeanne and Sandy to find a precious lab, who has brought lots of smiles and happiness into our lives. Sandy and Jeanne took the time to learn about our family and helped us find the perfect pup. Thank you Lab Rescuers for all that you do!!! You will always have a special place in our hearts!!!

I joined Lab Rescuers (LR) about 2 years ago. I wanted to adopt a dog from them but ended up being a foster parent for 10 dogs. Some of them got adopted and some became LR's lifeboat Labs (which means they're forever cared for in LR's loving foster homes).
The reason that keeps me volunteering is the group of highly dedicated volunteers. They are regular people just like us with 9-5 jobs, but still find time to organize events, fundraisers, garage sales, transportation for dogs (sometimes from LA all the way down to SD), rehabs for dogs, be foster homes ...etc. Many of the dogs LR pulls in are older labs, owner-turn-ins and labs that are in need of medical attention. Because of all the volunteers willing to put in their time to do whatever it is for the dogs in our care, LR is able to save 360 dogs (on average) per year. Many of the dogs are adopted to their forever homes.
Being part of this amazing team is what keeps me going.

We adopted our Henry from Lab Rescuers 2 years ago and he has been a blessing from day one. The home visit helped us understand the needs of our soon to be family member and the fosters with whom we spoke helped us understand the needs of their particular dog, and thereby guiding us to our perfect new family member. I cannot say enough positive things about this great organization! When they asked me to help with home visits in my area, which is a bit north of theirs, I hesitated as I work full time and care for my grandchildren on weekends. But I did help occasionally and now I make the time to serve as best I can. This group of energetic, kind, clever, resourceful, and throughly dedicated people are a credit to humanity, as they truly do Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Rehome as many Labs as possible. It's an honor to support this noble organization!

I've known both volunteers and foster families who work with this rescue and all are very dedicated to the mission of helping dogs find new homes. They will take labs into their rescue family, regardless of age or health, provide them with needed medical care and place them as soon as possible in new homes, or foster homes. A very dedicated group who understands and practices the true meaning of rescue

I've known the volunteers of Lab Rescuers for 15 years. They are so dedicated to saving the lives of so many labs, regardless of age or medical condition or the difficulties that the rescue itself may pose. It was a privilege to adopt a lab from them 10 years ago.
It is the lucky dog that finds themself with Labrador Rescuers - true advocates for the health, happiness and well being of the dog

Prior to looking for a lab to join our family, we looked at multiple lab rescue sites. The one that stood out time after time was Labrescuers, so when we decided to start looking for a lab, we applied with Labrescuers. Our volunteer, Linda, who came to do our home visit was amazing. She truly cared about learning about us so she could match us with the right dog. She has been amazing, and sends us emails when there is a new dog she feels may be a match for us. She has been so understanding and helpful, it is very apparent that this organization of volunteers runs like an organization of professionals. They take in high cost/maintenance medical cases and get them as healthy as possible and ready for new homes, no matter what it takes. They take great effort to match the right dog with the right family so that everyone is happy at the end of the process. I can't say enough good things about this organization.

Oh my gosh, Lab Rescuers of San Diego is the best TRULY non-profit (all-volunteer run) organizations I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. We have two labs (Winter and Lexi), both from LR. The LR volunteers are just incredible people and work so hard for these sweet pups.

I wholeheartedly support LR and will continue to get all future doggies right from them.

We adopted a puppy through Labrador Rescuers four years ago. The application process and home visit were very efficient and uncomplicated. We love our dog. He was well-socialized and a good fit for our family from the start. Sandie, one of the foster volunteers, is a saint and truly loves all the dogs that come to her home. Four years later we still have puppy reunions with our dear Marty's litter mates! Labrador Rescuers is an amazing organization, doing a great service for our community!
