Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals, Emergency Medical Services & Transport, Health, Veterinary Services

Mission: Kitten Rescue was founded in the spring of 1997 and has grown to become one of the largest and well-respected rescue groups in Los Angeles. We are a non-profit organization devoted to finding loving new homes for unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens. We are equally dedicated to giving the public vital information about responsible pet ownership, care of kittens and cats, managing feral cats, and most importantly, the importance of spaying and neutering. Our website at www.kittenrescue.org features information on cat rescue, care, and adoption for animal lovers all over the world. The majority of our cats are cared for in foster homes until they are placed with adopters, who are screened carefully to ensure the stability and quality of an animal's new environment. Before going home, each cat or kitten is fixed, tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, vaccinated, dewormed, treated for fleas and microchipped. We also provide full medical care for the cats in our care until they are adopted. In March 2006 Kitten Rescue purchased the Kitten Rescue Sanctuary, a private, no-kill shelter and boarding facility in Atwater Village, that can house up to 150 cats. In 2016, we converted the front house of the Kitten Rescue Sanctuary to a full time Nursery, where we care for orphaned, unweaned kittens around the clock. Unweaned kittens brought into city shelters are euthanized within hours of intake if a foster home or rescue group cannot be found. The Nursery has increased our lifesaving ability tremendously. Kitten Rescue is a member of NKLA (NO-KILL LOS ANGELES), an initiative led by Best Friends Animal Society, bringing together passionate individuals, city shelters and an entire coalition of animal welfare organizations to end the killing of pets in L.A. city shelters simply because they don't have safe places to call home.

Results: Since our inception Kitten Rescue has placed around 17,000 cats into loving homes.

Target demographics: homeless cats and dogs.

Geographic areas served: Los Angeles, CA

Programs: Rescue and adoption services for cats and dogs saved from city shelters and the streets.

Kitten Rescue is the BEST! I am an adopter, and a foster - and I always feel supported. KR knows their stuff, and is one of the most conscientious and knowledgable groups in Los Angeles

Even though I am extremely busy with school and work during the week, I always make time to volunteer here. The staff are extremely helpful, friendly, and very dedicated to the wellbeing of the cats. I am grateful that they are able to save cats who have been abused, abandoned, or euthanized at shelters. This is a great organization that provides refuge to many cats who would never have had the opportunity to be taken care of and adopted by loving people.

in 2011 I had to put to sleep one of my cats, Thunder. I was completely heart broken and felt so bad for his sister, Roxy that she would be alone. I started my search and, through Pet Finder, discovered Kitten Rescue Los Angeles. I saw a few kittens that interested me and I contacted the organization, made an appointment and went to see them the next day.

The network of foster providers is amazing. I went to a home that had a dedicated area for the adoptable cats (along with an outside area that was completely constructed for the kitties to be outside but not get out). As per the norm, the kitten I went there to see didn't work out but there was a cute little guy who caught my attention by showing off and plopping in my lap. These cats are so we socialized you would never know they were born wild. I adopted Jaspurr and he's amazing.

Fast forward to 2014 and having to put my girl kitty Roxy to sleep due to Kidney Disease. I found myself, yet again, turning to Kitten Rescue to find a companion for Jaspurr. I fell in LOVE with a little calico girl on their Kitten Cam and in May I brought her home. Again super socialized and Jaspurr and Melodie became (very) fast friends.

The sanctuary itself is wonderful. Open areas for the cats to roam free and the work they do to socialize and adopt out animals is bar none. I promote and get the word out about Kitten Rescue whenever I know people are looking for cats or kittens to adopt. The adoption process is great and assures that both the new "paw parents" and the "kitty kids" mesh.

I I am extremely impressed with Kitten Rescue! I saw a picture of a cat on facebook who looked really sad, so I clicked on the pic and eventually ended up adopting the cat. I wasn't sure if I was ready for another cat or if the recent alpha cat we rescued would allow it. We went to visit Cheetos at Petsmart and thought he was very sweet, but I still didn't feel ready. I let it go for a week or so and then heard from Cynthia (I'm glad she was proactive!), who was wondering if I had made a decision. The fact that I had been really sick, on top of not knowing how the other cat would react, made me hesitant to go for it. Then Cynthia said we could do a trial basis. That was all I needed. She brought Cheetos over and he's been here ever since! It wasn't an easy adjustment for our other cat, but now they are good friends. We are THRILLED to have Cheeetos, and he's very happy! I'm glad that we were able to adopt an older cat. Cheetos is three, so he's still playful and energetic, but he's not climbing the curtains or destroying my art studio! Cynthia is very knowledgeable about cats and she taught us how to introduce the two boys and answered all of our questions. Thank you Cynthia & Kitten Rescue!

Two and a half years ago I adopted two of the sweetiest, most wonderful boys. I was heart broken after the loss of my previous cat, but my home was empty and I was ready to fill it. Kitten Rescue did a great job helping me find the right pets for me at the right time. They did a in-home evaluation and they offered suggestions on how to help keep my new kids safe, happy and healthy.

I recently became a volunteer and am excited to try and give back what Kitten Rescue did for me.

I became a volunteer for Kitten Rescue in 2011 in a very random way. While in a local Starbucks café, I overheard a woman in front of me describe to the barista the box of abandoned kittens she had just received that morning. I had read an article that morning describing the fate of many cats and kittens who are brought to "shelters." I read that these animals are killed even though they are perfectly healthy and adoptable. I told the woman in front of me about the article, (little did I know to whom I was speaking), and she told me that she was a volunteer with Kitten Rescue in Los Angeles, and was very familiar with this terrible situation facing not only abandoned cats and kittens, but especially feral cats and kittens.

We spoke for a short time and I expressed my interest in working with feral cats and kittens because I felt that they particularly had no voice in the world of animal care. We exchanged numbers and I soon became the feeder of a local feral cat colony.

Since 2011, I not only feed my feral colony, but also provide socialization and isolation space for Kitten Rescue. When I receive cats or kittens into my home, I provide a safe, loving space for them to become tame and tend to any health issues they may have.

Once their isolation/socialization period is completed, they move on to their foster home, from which the volunteer takes them to our various venues for adoption to a forever home.

I have had some "tough cases" come into my home, and wondered whether I could successfully tame them. With the invaluable, expert support of the other Kitten Rescue volunteers, I was very fortunate to tame nearly every kitten I have taken in. To see a young cat transform from a frightened, wild animal to a purring, loving and playful companion, just sets my heart free and provides a feeling of profound accomplishment.

While being a Kitten Rescue volunteer can be challenging sometimes, it is the perfect kind of challenge that allows one to know that in this life, at this moment in time, you have saved a life. Being a Kitten Rescue volunteer has given me a joy I never knew I could experience and it has made all the difference in my life. Trish N.

I love and respect Kitten Rescue, one of the best organizations there is. I adopted twice thru Kitten Rescue, and their help was not only before and during the adoption, but extremely hands on AFTER the adoption and every time I needed help with the adoptee. They are amazing.

Kitten rescue is made up of devoted animal-lovers who will give everything to give LA cats (and dogs) homes. This is a wonderful organization that is much-needed in Los Angeles.

When I founded Kitten Rescue in 1997, it was just me and a couple of kittens saved from the LA Animal Shelter showing at a local pet store. How could I have guessed that we would grow to be hundreds of volunteers saving a thousand companion animals a year ( cats AND dogs) and finding them new forever homes? There's a new heart-wrenching story every day, like Amigo, who was left in a box at a shelter with his feet and face bound with duct tape, yet our volunteers never lose hope. We work tirelessly toward the day that we can call Los Angeles a no-kill city.

I have never met a more dedicated bunch of volunteers. Everyone works tirelessly to help save and improve the lives of animals (cats, dogs, the occasional bunny, bird, rodent). I feel lucky to be associated with this group.

I have seen the love and care that each cat and/or kitten is given until it is placed in its forever home. I know how hard the fosters work at placing the right animal with the right family. I know the hours spent each year driving kittens to and from the vet. I know the sacrifices made by going to adoptions every Saturday and Sunday, and then working Monday thru Friday.
You may ask how I know these things. I know because my daughter is a Kitten Rescue Foster.
God bless her and all the other fosters. Thank you each and every one of you!

Kitten Rescue is my favorite animal rescue because of several things. All donations go to care of animals; the tireless volunteers save animals the others might deem "not worth saving". They save the sick and injured that require extreme care taking and high vet bills as well as the "easier" ones. I have recently found two separate abandoned and starving kitties and the ONLY rescue group who offered me any assistance (and I called them all) was Kitten Rescue!

I've volunteered with Kitten Rescue for over 15 years. They have made a great impact on animal rescue and placement in Los Angeles. I'm proud to see it grow from a humble few cat loving people to hundreds of dedicated volunteers so motivated to educate, raise public awareness of homeless animals and making LA a no-kill city!

We adopted our Lilly from Kitten Rescue about 13 years ago! She's going strong today at almost 20 years old. It's great to see Kitten Rescue out there doing wonderful things for cats in the Los Angeles area. Keep up the excellent work!

I have been a proud supporter of Kitten Rescue for several years and they do an incredible job for the cats of Los Angeles. As with every city, the cats are overpopulated and far too many wind up at the overcrowded shelters. Kitten Rescue takes many of these homeless cats, spay & neuters them and finds them their forever homes- and great ones at that! They also help the ferals with a Trap, Neuter, Return policy that stops the constant breeding of more homeless cats. The volunteers are dedicated & hard-working and share a profound love for each & every cat they rescue, along with those they can't.

My husband and I began fostering cats and kittens by accident. When we found that it was really difficult to find homes for the cats, we began to reach out to organizations for help. Kitten Rescue educated us on the process and have been really supportive of our efforts. It takes patience, dedication and commitment to find the right forever homes for these cats and kittens. If you want to adopt, Kitten Rescue makes sure your kitty is healthy, and a truly great match for you. Thanks to Kitten Rescue we've found homes, and also a remarkable community of caring people dedicated to these cats that deserve a warm and loving home.

I adopted my three cats through Kitten Rescue. They take their responsibility to find their animals good "forever" homes seriously, including conducting home visits and asking thorough questions. My cats were well fostered, socialized, healthy, microchipped, and had all their shots. One of them had been found in a parking lot as a little kitten, suffering a severe eye infection. Kitten Rescue paid for the eye surgery, and this cost was NOT passed on to me. Adopting is very affordable - they recently had an event where the cost was free for people who had already adopted, $20 for others (for black cats).
Kitten Rescue is run by a very dedicated team of volunteers, and the overwhelming majority of funds raised go to the vet bills (and microchipping, etc) for the animals.
The fosters are incredibly dedicated to rescuing animals - they are not paid, and not reimbursed for food or kitty litter.
After my positive experience with Kitten Rescue, I have run in the LA marathon the last two years to raise money for Kitten Rescue. I'm more than happy to run 26.2 miles to help this organization.

As an adopter of Kitten Rescue cats, and a previous Kitten Rescue Foster, I cannot sing enough praises for this group. What impressed me most? With hundreds of cats that need homes, we would rather keep a cat in our care than to adopt it to a home that we do not feel is suitable. People like Sandra Harrison, who is a foster and is on the Kitten Rescue Board of Directors, are an amazing example of the relentless, heartfelt efforts that this group is built on.

I was reading a post on Facebook about a badly abused cat which looked like my Big Boy that had just passed to cat heaven. I could not get his picture out of my head even when I went to sleep so I left a message that I would like to meet him and his name was Juanito. I say "was Juanito" because my husband changed his name to Little Boy. The sweetest lady, Sandra Harrison brought him to my home and it was instant love. It only took him 4-6 hours to come out of the room and join our family and other cats. When he looks at you with those big eyes, its like he's saying "Thank You". I am so glad that I adopted him from Kitten Rescue and also met a wonderful lady in the process. Sandra should receive a gold medal for her work and especially her love for cats.

We mourned the loss of our beloved cat, and found Kitten Rescue online. They responded quickly, and thoroughly checked out our qualifications as responsible pet owners, including a visit to our home. This may bug some people, we thought it was fabulous. We found Leo through their photos, and he has become a star cat, so well socialized thanks to the great Foster care, and a wonderful addition to our family. Thanks again! Cynthia, our connection is a star as well!

About 2 years ago I was looking for a cat to keep our elderly cat company, after having lost her sister a few weeks earlier. I stumbled on a Kitten Rescue event by accident at a local pet store, and was impressed with their helpfulness and kindness. They didn't have a cat right then that we felt connected to, but told me that another volunteer was coming shortly with a few more kitties. We came back, and ended up falling for a gentle, black little girl. The woman we dealt with was Sandra Harrison, who bent over backwards to make sure everything went smoothly with the adoption, and even afterward, to help clear up a small infection that the cat had. A few months later, after our older cat passed, we went straight to Kitten Rescue again, and Sandra, to help us find another. We scored right away, and couldn't be happier with their caring, kind attitude. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a rescue animal. They take excellent care of their fosters, and do their best to find great homes.

It must have been the late '90s when I became acquainted with Kitten Rescue. I would visit with the kitties and chat with the volunteer rescuers when I would get supplies for my cat at Centinela Feed & Pet. I liked the people that were involved with the group and their cats always looked well taken care of. When my kitty passed away at 16 yrs, I looked to Kitten Rescue to adopt 2 bonded older kitties. I adopted 2 wonderful 5 year old sisters, Minnie and Minxy, from an amazing woman, Sandra Harrison. Sandra is so devoted to her little ones and works tirelessly to find them loving homes. I can not say enough good things about Sandra and Kitten Rescue.

I stumbled upon Kitten Rescue when I walked into my local Petco hoping to adopt a cat in honor of my recently-passed cat of 20 years. I was still heartbroken and even more upset when I realized adoptions had ended for the day. But a very sweet volunteer stayed behind to listen to my story through my tears. Later that night she emailed me with several cats for me to consider. Within days I went to the foster home and met my beloved Romeo. He had been in foster care for 5 years with the KR volunteer who had rescued him and saved his life. I had assumed I could take him home that night, not realizing there was a process in place. These two volunteers, Belinda and Sandra, went out of their way to deliver Romeo to my home that very night. That was 5 years ago and I am grateful every day for this amazing feline. I am also incredibly grateful that Sandra continues to be a part of Romeo's life, offering her advice, support and love. It is obvious that Romeo still holds a very special place in her heart, as I'm sure so many other fortunate rescued cats do. Kitten Rescue is lucky to have such dedicated, caring volunteers.

I have SO much respect for every single human associated with Kitten Rescue.

I especially personally know of the extremely dedicated time two of KR's people devote to this organization, and the little lives they save on a near-daily basis. And both of these precious women are immensely knowledgeable. They both know who they are, because I have extreme fondness for each of them.

I had spent some time looking into animal rescues I could do some volunteer work for. I hadn't heard of kitten rescue before but loved reading all the wonderful reviews other people had given, and decided to sign up as a volunteer. Even the way the volunteer orientation was organized impressed me. As well as immediately feeling very welcome. The cats are clearly so loved and very well taken care of. And even after having just started my volunteer work myself, I look forward to the next time I get to go back to help out and receive some kitty purrs :)

Long time volunteer and must say its a great organization and saves a lot of cats from the streets and shelters. Has a bunch of dedicated volunteers that always go the extra mile to help a cat(s) in need. The donations received go directly to cats volunteers dont see any of it and pay for a lot of things out of their own pockets. But with vet costs always rising donations are always needed and will be put to good use.

I owe much to Kitten Rescue. 13 years ago, I adopted a 6 month old longhaired calico from Kitten Rescue. I named her Friskie, and she has been a loving and loyal pet for me all these years. This past summer, I decided to adopt again. (I'd lost Friskie's 15 year old brother earlier in the year.) I met lots of cats form different rescue organizations but was having trouble finding the right fit for both myself and Friskie. Ultimately, it was Kitten Rescue to the rescue again! I searched "adoptable cats and kittens" on Kitten Rescue's website and fell in love with two 3.5 month old littermates, now named Boo and Ninja. The Kitten Rescue foster went above and beyond to make the adoption work for me and all kitties involved. They were delivered to me healthy and very well-adjusted. They are the sweetest, most adorable kittens on the planet. I highly recommend Kitten Rescue if you are looking to adopt a cat!
