This is an amazing place! They welcomed our Girl Scout troop years ago and it made such an impact on so many of the girls. My daughter has volunteered at different times over the years and she is always welcomed and loves all the animals they are helping!
Volunteering at Save The Horses has been one of the greatest privileges I've ever been given. These animals are truly grateful for a second chance in life. Our volunteers are the most hard working, giving and compassionate people. It's truly a family. Thank you Cheryl Flannigan for giving us this place!!!
Horse Relief & Retirement Fund does so much to help horses (and sometimes other unfortunate animals as well.) I do not know of a group with a bigger heart, not to mention the amount of work they do. They work 24/7 to make sure all animals are properly taken care of and loved. It makes me happy to see these animals gain weight, get medical attention and get the love they need and deserve. I am so glad they exist, so these animals do not have to suffer and can lead a wonderful life. I cannot say enough good things about Horse Rescue & Relief Retirement Fund.
I have helped from building fences to painting children's faces at Hay Day.
I've also fostered 2 of the cutest mini horses.
Cheryl gives her heart and soul to this foundation. She loves all the animals on her farm, they are so lucky to finally find the care and nurturing that Cheryl and her staff provide. It's time well spent going out to volunteer and you feel so good about the work that you're doing.
My family has visited, volunteered, and adopted from here and had the opportunity to meet amazing people like Cheryl and all the volunteers. They tirelessly give of themselves for the sake of these abused, injured or abandoned horses and other rescued animals. I'm so thankful that they are here and do the work they do. They truly put their hearts and souls into it every single day.
I started to volunteer in August on 2011. Ironically, the mare I would later adopt came to the rescue that same month. While it would be a few months before my relationship with Esther would develop I quickly came to realize the fulfillment that helping others who needed my time and attention could bring. The sanctuary that HRRR Fund Inc. offers not just to horses but to animals of all species you may find on a farm, is a wonderful thing. Animals that would have likely ended up in slaughterhouse or dead from neglect or abuse are again able to enjoy life. They learn to accept to love and in turn give it in return. The common reflection made by all the volunteers that I have met is what they take home at the end of the day. The gift of making a difference in invaluable.

I have been affiliated with Save the Horses since August, 2011. The work is hard but so worth the end results. I say the work is hard to include not just the physical effort but the emotional effort it takes to give and then watch a beautiful animal not make it. Cheryl's never ending commitment to the rescue and care of the animals is astounding and inspirational. Her generosity in making room for yet another horse has resulted in so many people finding the joy of loving a creature that is amazingly capable of giving back. I have been the fortunate recipient of such love when I adopted a rescue that may have gone unnoticed and forgotten if not for Cheryl's decision to bring her to the rescue. Thank you, Cheryl, and to all of the volunteers who make it possible for another horse to find a place of shelter. You are the best!!!!!
This rescue is tireless and giving to the two legged animals who work to care for the 4 legged animals who need is so very much.
The staff and volunteers truly have a selfless heart, as evidenced by the painstaking measures and endless care they provide to lovingly rehabilitate so many horses. They also actively help involve and educate the public, providing hands-on experience with the horses and daily barn work, like holding horses for the farrier or stacking hay. Horses that are lucky enough to find themselves in their care are adored and given optimal care, as well as plentiful time to heal and begin anew. Save The Horses is a tremendous organization and should be applauded for being such a wonderful model of proper and careful equine rehabilitation. Thank you Save The Horses for all that you do!
We have known Cheryl Flanagan and HRRRF since 1997. She helped us find our son's first horse, Snowflake. Later she provided a place for Pony Club to meet, for horse back riding lessons, clinics, and events.
As my son grew, we bought a neglected thoroughbred for $500 from a friend of ours. Our friend had found Mac at a horse auction and brought him home, knowing he didn't have any use for him but knowing that Mac needed a home.
Mac had done it all and proved to be a great schoolmaster for our son. We dearly loved him and he was a part of our family until Mac sadly had to be retired. When we reached that point we thought of Cheryl and HRRRF. We knew she would help us find a good home for Mac to happily spend the rest of his life. It was important to us to have a safe place for Mac to go to, where there would be no chance that he would be sold, abused, or neglected.
Since then we have been to the farm many times and donate as much as we can to support HRRRF. We love spending time at the farm. By spending time with Cheryl and the rest of the volunteers, you come away having learned about respect for life, patience and compassion. Cheryl has touched my life - and continues to touch everyone around her. Cheryl and the HRRRF volunteers make a difference in the lives of those who are fortunate enough to be in their care, in addition to the lives of the other volunteers, adopters, horse lovers, board members and friends.
This is a great place & they do awesome work. I recommend, supporting, visiting their rescue, volunteering & following them on FB & their web site. Get ready to meet some great Horses & real Angels that do all they can to help horses in all kinds of wonderful & creative ways & be a part of saving some awesome Horses who need you.
This is a great group of people. The farm promotes a lot of community interaction and is a fun and positive place to volunteer at. One of the things I like about the organization is its willingness to help any animal and other rescue organizations, with many of the volunteers pitching in at any time and with short notice. It's a great mix of helping animals and people.
Not only is this a wonderful organization to volunteer for, but this is the place to go to if you want to adopt a lifelong equine friend. Cheryl Flanagan is one of the very few who runs a rescue with integrity and honesty. She will pick the best matches for her animals, and her passion and dedication show no limit.
There are not enough words to describe how much I admire and appreciate the remarkable work done at Save The Horses!! Cheryl Flanaghan and her staff work tirelessly to save the lives of horse, donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs, and the list goes on. They also offer riding lessons, horsemanship workshops, and have a very successful "Barn Buddy" Program that pairs foster/adopted children with rescued horses, teaching proper equine care and building confidence too. They see them bond together and flourish! I love every minute spent there.

What an amazing place with an awesome mission: to give love, compassion, hope, and purpose to neglected and hurting animals! When I went for my first visit, I never expected to see the vast array of animals being cared for at Save The Horses (Horse Rescue Relief and Retirement Fund Inc.). There were horses, donkeys, pigs, chickens, goats, and ducks. And all of them looked very happy and healthy because of the attention they have received from Cheryl Flanagan and her incredible team of volunteers. They take horses that are in desperate need of medical care and they restore their health by doing whatever it takes to bring that healing about. It is a wonderful place to visit and I'm so thankful that it is only a short drive from Woodstock!
Save the horse is such a great non profit!! We bring our daughter there to love on the horses and other animals. The care and compassion that everyone on the farm exhibits to others and the animals is truly amazing! Help them help the horses!
When I was in high school I use to come to volunteer all the time I had here. This place is truly remarkable. So many incredible stories happen at this place. Cheryl is a great person with a beautiful soul. Everyone is welcomed and is properly educated on how to handle and care for the animals. There is a place for everyone (human or animal) here! I saw horses walk out of this place (looking strong and beautiful) that no one thought would live.
STH saves many animals that are not horses even though horses are their main focus. Their saving people too! Go volunteer for them and you'll find out first-hand.

I have only volunteered sporadically the past few years, but I am always amazed at the level of caring and generosity throughout this organization. The director's, Cheryl, compassion and empathy are immeasurable. It seems, through the email updates and newsletters, that if there is no way they can take an animal a very aggressive campaign is started to find a place or funds for injured, sick or discarded animals. Having worked as a victim advocate for over 17 years, I can attest to nature's healing powers and the volunteers are being helped emotionally as well as saving the animals! I have recommended this group to many people.
I have volunteered here before and cannot say enough good things about the work they do to help the animals. Everyone cares so much and truly takes the time to make sure al animals are cared for. Thank God there are people like them in the world.
Save the horses rescue relief and retirement is ocated in Cumming , Georgia is a pretty special place not just for horses but other unwanted or abused animals as well . Cheryl , the manager and owner if the horse rescue works hard with her team making sure all of the animals are loved and well cared for . Cheryl's teAm puts endless volunteer hours in round the click when needed to save a "life ". I commend Cheryl and her team for their kindness toward God's beautiful fur babies . Please donate to this rescue so that many more miracles can happen - Karen Ivester
They do great things for the animals! I have been volunteering for two years and I still get excited when I go! :)
Save the horses does amazing work with all the horses and so much more. I have seen all animals from rats to lamas come into rescue. Some how Cheryl fixes them up and finds them loving homes. She never gives up on them even when things seem hopeless. My family is blessed to be volunteers here.
While working there as a volunteer, I was amazed at the volunteers and members who give their time, energy and donations to keep this amazing horse rescue running. I felt like I was the one who gained from my time spent there-was therapeutic to see these amazing creatures cared for with so much love and compassion-despite their handicaps. Just seeing the progress these creatures made while in their care was rewarding enough, not to mention the way everyone pulled together as a team to make it happen.
When everyone comes together and becomes one its this group, they help they do what ever each horse needs in question whether it's hay or transportation or medical they will be there. Anyone whom gives a horse a second chance in life it's this group!
I have volunteered at Save The Horses for over 4 years now and it's the best experience of my life! It's a sanctuary for both people and animals. People that come there are coming to help the horses and find that they are helping themselves even more. This rescue is a 100% volunteer ran rescue. Cheryl never turns away people or animals in need. I fell in love with one of the horses there at the main rescue named "Lady Jane". She became ill and we were told that there was no hope to save her in the very beginning. But with Cheryl's help, we still tried everything possible before we were at the point where we needed to let her go crossed over the rainbow bridge. After Lady Jane passed on, I didn't know if I could go back. But the pull was too strong to stay away and I was back there the next morning. Another person at the rescue named Pam Ross encouraged me to come out to another property that had horses on it from the rescue. These horses were the horses that didn't belong at the rescue where they might be a danger to people. These are the horses that will probably be there until they cross the rainbow bridge. I went one time and fell in love with the whole bunch. I now devote all my time to them and this is my personal sanctuary as much as the horses. We now have 21 horses there and I love every minute that I'm there. I thank God everyday for bringing Cheryl Flanagan & Save The Horses into my life.
We have been blessed to be volunteers and donors to this organization for several years . The owners are the most devoted , sacrificial and hard working people I know. We have learned that every dollar we donate is put toward the health and treatment of the horses!! Please look into who these people are and how amazing they are!!! The horses need us all to pitch in!! They deserve so much care and love , since so many of them have spent years being abused at the hands of their previous owners!
This place is all about the horses and in turn it is a positive influence on a volunteers life. The care and love needed for these large animals can only be accomplished by special people and specialized property.
As a former animal keeper and one that grew up around horses, I was very pleased with what I saw when I visited the rescue several months ago. It was encouraging to see the setting that these animals now live in especially knowing many of them have come from neglectful situations. It is a wonderful feeling to see the loving volunteers giving their time in caring for these animals. I hope to volunteer when my children are a little older. I encourage those reading this will consider volunteering and/or donating to this great rescue.
I have known and worked with HRRRF for over 10 years. The manner in which they operate, their overall priorities, and their dedication "to the cause", (helping both the animals and people) is second to none. One of the things I love about them is their acceptance of people, animals, situations without judgment. There is no political agenda other than to do the right thing. This is so rare to find a non-profit that does what they say they will do with the money they receive from donations. It does not go to fund some high end salary, it goes to the horses for their care. They have built the foundation of true giving that could be a model to other rescues. They are very rare indeed.
I am founder of Last Stop Horse Rescue in Maine. During one of my recent trips to Georgia to visit my daughter and grandchildren I had the opportunity to meet Cheryl Flanagan of this amazing rescue. My daughter purchased her first horse. We shared this together, and met the most kind and gentle souls. A beautiful QH buckskin. The rest of this story was a nightmare. She was not the horse we met and not the horse that was delivered where my daughter was going to keep her. I reached out for help. Called several rescues and this rescue was the one to call back with referral to other horse people who could help that were from the area. When "Ginger" was delivered Cheryl came with one of her trainers to see if she could help my daughter who was inexperienced with a horse with severe trust and dominant issues. Rescue is for many reasons... and before I could leave Georgia I needed to know that my daughter and her new horse were in good hands. Cheryl rescued "me" and allowed me to head back to Maine to care for my own 27 horses at my own rescue. They did not know me, but they knew I needed help and help came. Many phone calls came later, following up with my daughter and myself. Names of vets, farriers, hay suppliers were offered by this helpful rescue. Being in the public, the support base is huge and this rescue used their support system to get help for Toni and "Ginger". I believe that a horse doesnt always have to "land" at a rescue to need help. A giving heart, an open heart, and a honest heart is how this rescue is managed. Thank you to all the volunteers and everyone who donates and is behind the scene. So many equine are sent to slaughter because they are no longer wanted. Doing a great job in Cumming Georgia!
I adopted Arynne 3 years ago. She is an ex race horse and is the sweetest girl. I have also volunteered at the rescue. Cheryl never turns an animal in need away. She is a blessing to all those that come to her.
Fantastic rescue that really goes the extra mile to help animals in the area. They don't give up easily and have always shown themselves to be professionals.
Cheryl Flanagan and her team of rescue angels continue to amaze me with all that they do for horse rescues. Each and every story of rescues, donations, personal time donated brings tears to my eyes. This organization has done so much for our community and animals in desperate need of a home and health care. Keep up the awesome work!!!
I have placed three horses from this great facility and cause. I have one horse now that is still in my care. They do a great work here with not questions asked or judgement made. The main and only focus is the welfare and care of the animals and not just horses. I fully support them totally because I know it isn't about money it is about doing what is right.
I have volunteered at this organization for over two years and it has been the best experience of my life. There are so many horses that need our help and its places like Save the Horses that helps save them. It doesn't matter if you've been around horses all of your life or if it's your first time seeing one there are always volunteers there to help teach you. If you are looking to volunteer or donate somewhere come here, it doesn't matter how much or little you do ever bit helps these horses. This a 100% volunteer run rescue and with your help we can save the animals that can't save themselves. WE ARE RESCUE!
The tag line on this organization is "Horse Rescue-Human Rescue." I am a new volunteer to this rescue. I found it after having unexpected open heart surgery and realized that my bucket list needed to be worked on! They have welcomed me so warmly--I have yet to meet anyone that is not fantastic! It truly is a working farm for so many animals--they are all well cared for and happy! And thankfully for me--it helps us humans too--my heart has never been better! This is the most amazing Rescue and I am pleased and proud to be a part of it!
These people do amazing work with animals who have no voice except our voice. Please do whatever you can to help these amazing animals by volunteering or donating. Thank you in advance for helping!!!
As a follower of Save The Horses in Cummings Georgia, I truly believe that there are special people who are put on this earth to help those who have no voice. I'm a horse lover and love all animals. What I see that the owners and volunteers of this organization do each and everyday is just truly remarkable. They try and save the unwanted, sick, hurt animals and rehabilitate them so they can find new homes, or live out the rest of their lives comfortably with all the love that they can provide for them. Sometimes we cannot save them all, but for even just that one, we make a difference in their lives. We are rescue!
HRRF is top notch.. The compassionate and dedicated volunteers and Cheryl Flanagan pit the needs of the equines first. Many Vets, and all professional individuals come here to work on whatever is in need. Cheryl digs for the best treatment for each resident. She only adopts out to the right home. She travels hundreds of miles. I would trust my horses to be at this rescue.

This rescue always puts the horses and donkeys first. I volunteer there. Adopters are checked out thoroughly. Wonderful volunteers. The head of the rescue I would trust with my own horses!
Sherrod Grove Stables, Oak City NC is an end of life sanctuary that cares for old, blind & permanently injured horses giving them the best care & love possible until their quality of life can no longer be maintained. The people at Sherrod Grove put the horses first and ensure the care they receive the best possible. All donations go directly to the care of the horses. And every horse they take in lives life to the fullest and are loved unconditionally no matter their handicap.
In Oct. 2002 I watched a benefit demonstration for STH done by Monty Roberts. There were several Horses from STH with different issues that he addressed and and was able to help. At that time I volunteered with a handicaped riding facility. The following February I came to visit the farm and see if I could help. There was a great need for help and I have been coming ever since. I have made many 2 and 4 legged friends there. Also had to say 'farewell' to many Horses and other animals. I have formed incredible bonds with some horses, and have helped to get other horses into their forever homes. This is incredibly rewarding work. It is always hard when there is nothing you can do for a horse and you have to say good bye, it happened several times over the years. But there are all the other animals that need, aside from food, water and a clean environment, need to be shown kindness and need to learn to trust humans again. Of course all of it has to be done when its blistering hot, or freezing cold, rainy, stormy or a perfect day. All this does not matter, they all are worth it. and of course you have the great company of your like minded fellow volunteers. I look forward to every Saturday to be able to spend time at the rescue farm.
Amazing work helping animals. Have been associated with them since the beginning. Their priority is the animal. Never turns away an animal in need. They put in their own time and money, not for any purpose but to help animals. Proud to be associated with them.
Love the rescue! I began my days at STH in 2007 when I first moved to Cumming. I was looking for a group to belong to and animals that I could work with and care for. Being a dog lover more than a horse lover I knew it was best I choose a horse rescue because it was safe...Safe in the sense I couldn't bring one home and put in my backyard. Certainly not with the approval of my HOA....so here my journey began. I learned about caring for horses, I learned how to groom, how to feed, how to turn in and turn out, how to muck a stall, spread shavings, empty water buckets, all the things that are required to care for horses and I loved every minute of it. I felt good each weekend after working with as many as I could on morning feed. In 2009 I started fostering dogs for the sister organization CAN and continued to care for both the equine and canine; those of which I can bring home and put in my yard. I also had the pleasure of fostering a baby pot bellied pig one summer named Kenny from STH. He was too little to go in the petting zoo area, so I cared for him along with my Standard Poodles while he grew up ! It is such a wonderful place to spend time and help out. I cherish my time and experiences.
I would like to take a bit of a different view for my review of Save the Horses. The caring, compassion, dedication, commitment and love that is obvious as soon as you visit the farm is apparent, what is not as openly seen is Cheryl's unique view on horse rescue. I have had the opportunity to work with several rescue across the Nation, and I have never come across a person as driven and focused on the true well being of horses as Cheryl. She wants to help all people, all rescue efforts, all horses no matter the location or who gets the credit for saving an animal. Cheryl is truly has a one of a kind heart, she has no concern for any recognition, only to save lives. This is such an incredible character trait that is not had by many.
STH is a santuary for both people, and horses! It is place where healing energy and passion for Nature come together! I have volunteered here for 15 years, and it has provided me with a stable, educational, fun loving atmosphere , in which I have grown as a horsewoman! Cheryl gives us a lot of freedom to express ourselves through horses, and their care! You cannot help but be inspired, and want to return to help, and in the end, becoming a better person yourself!
I am amazed at the dedication and love that the volunteers exhibit. If it's snowing, sleeting, and/or raining, these volunteers will drive miles and miles to save a horse that will not make another day of starvation, abuse, etc. There is a true spiritual love for these magnificent animals that these people all share. My hope is to one day to donate regularly because this is a remarkable organization.
You have to love people that love horses like these volunteers do.
There isn't much I can say, that hasn't already been said before my post. I can say first hand all are true. The farm as I refer to it is my sanctuary as much as it is the horses. I tell everyone about it and wonder how I could have missed out on this before in my life. Truly wonderful place and people.
I found this place in April 2014. Being new to GA and alone(all my family and friends are out west) it has given me great new friends and a place that feels like home. I am as happy as I ever have been, from the first day I stepped on the property, I have felt peace. You have to drop your stress before you walk onto the property because the horses sense it. Nothing is more special than getting a shy horse to take a treat from you. I even got to to hold a horse during an eye procedure. She just laid her head on my chest and that was it for me. Felt like nothing I have ever experienced. This place heals 2- leg people and the ones with 4 legs. Come by and you will see what I mean.
If you need a purpose in your life and want to feel better about yourself, join the volunteer team at the rescue. It is an atmosphere like no other, and you will come away a better person for the experience.
Brooke and I have been volunteering at the rescue for approximately 7 years and we truly love coming here to help out and visit all of the animals. Brooke and I have sponsored two different horses over the past several years which really made us bond with them and the farm. I have helped with fundraising over the past several years and it is always great to see the turn out. I have talked about the rescue to friends and two of them started volunteering a couple of years ago. I have brought several Girl Scout troops here over the years and they have fallen in love with the farm too. A great place to visit and have fun!
I first went to the rescue the weekend of my birthday 9 years ago. I knew this was a place I wanted to volunteer at and become a part of. I have found a family of friends, and animals who have forever changed my life. My dream came true 3 years ago when I adopted my first horse who is the love of my life. To sit and talk with the other volunteers after the work is done is priceless. They are honest, hard working friends who all you have to do is ask and they are ready to help no matter what the time of day or weather. I Thank God for this place as I am sure so do the animals who are lucky to find their way home to the rescue.
This rescue has changed my daughter's life. I'd go into detail, but then my review would be too long. :) In short, she's been battling with mental and physical issues and STH has helped and blessed us SO MUCH. I can't even describe it. We've been volunteers for 3 years and have absolutely fallen in love with Save The Horses! Everyone there is so nice and Cheryl Flanagan just has the kindest heart.
This is an incredible place to volunteer - I never regret any time I spend with both the horses and the people here. Everyone is so kind and helpful, and working with the horses and spending time with them really helps your state both mentally and physically.
I started volunteering here and am really impressed with the passion, dedication and work the volunteers put into this organization. Their commitment to abused, neglected and unwanted animals is unsurpassed. Although there are a lot of small animal rescue organizations and volunteers, there are very few for large animals and they need help just like the little ones and HRRR does a much needed job!
The staff I have worked with are very kind and friendly people who, like myself, have a soft spot for the animals; want the best for them, to be healthy and happy despite their handicap. To give them just as much hope and peace and a place to feel safe same as any human longs for in their day to day life. Working there brings a sense of peace to myself, knowing what I am doing (as well as the others) is going to make this world a better place. The immediate impact is in the direction of the animals, however, it benefits society because for those that volunteer, it has a positive impact, which then comes out in their interaction with other people. I love the fact there are others who are trying to fill this scary world with love and compassion.
Horses soothe the soul, makes me feel like I'm flying in the sky to be around them. I knew that Save The Horses was the place for me when I found that they rescue horses from bad situations! As soon as I step foot onto the property everyone is always very helpful, super friendly and so genuine. Each person I speak to always makes me feel at home and so welcomed. Not to mention the horses are friendly, diverse and gorgeous! Every time I get to groom or lead a horse (or donkey!) my heart pumps happier! It truly is life changing and really does heal your heart to be a part of it.
Cheryl told me a beautiful thing today. She said that those who have one brown eye and one blue eye can see Heaven and Earth at the same time. I was grooming Jackson whom has one blue eye. Everyone here is in it for the LOVE! I am so greatful for Cheryl and this organization.
I haven't been volunteering long, but now they've got me forever!
I started volunteering at Save the Horses a few months ago and each time I go am overwhelmed by the goodness and joy at this wonderful farm. No horse's need is too big or too small; no cause is too lost. the dedication and commitment is unfathomable and the horses are just wonderful. The farm is, of course, lifesaving for the horses -- but it is good for the soul.
I have 3 rescue horses from Horse Rescue and Relief. These people do the most wonderful job with all of the horses. They don't turn away the tough cases and pour their hearts into every horse. As far as I am concerned these are the most dedicted rescue people I know. I wish I could win the lottery and give it to them !!!!!!!
My granddaughter, who is 9, and I have been volunteering once a week for about 6 months. She had no experience with horses before that but jumped in right away to help. Now she is very confident around them and takes on the "dirty" jobs as readily as everyone else. The horses are all so good with the kids that volunteer that it makes you wonder if they know they are lucky to have been rescued. During our 6 months, we have seen some horses that have been terribly abused, both physically and mentally, but with the help of Save the Horses, they have blossomed and returned to their former glory. I can't say enough about the organization and how hard they work to save every horse, or donkey, or goat, pig or e even cow that comes to them. Of course, not every animal can be saved but it is a true lesson in compassion to witness the decisions that have to be made for the sake of the animal. On a more personal side, it has also given my granddaughter and I a bond that can never be broken and I am so thankful to Save the Horses for that.
I started regularly volunteering at STH after I was released from the hospital - I viewed it as my therapy. This place is listed as a sanctuary for animals, but it works that way for people to. You visit, you help, you heal with the animals. Cheryl is a wonderful human being and willing to do whatever it takes to help all animals. She has a heart of gold! We have a great group of volunteers, but can always use more and would love to see more happy faces coming to help and be helped!
Cheryl and the volunteers of Save the Horses have built a place of incredible compassion. The lucky animals that find their way here receive such love and care. Sometimes the rescue is a place to rehabilitate or learn before finding a new home. Sometimes it's a happy and social forever home. Other times, it is a safe and peaceful place to end their days, comfortable and loved.
Every resource is put to good use, and the work and dedication are tremendous. A more deserving organization would be hard to find.
This organization is one that truly works from the heart and soul of like minded people that are led by Cheryl Flanagan. Cheryl is one of the most amazing and giving people I have ever met. She is totally committed to helping the animals and people in need and works endless hours making sure that happens. I have worked firsthand with some of the volunteers and they are quick to respond to help animals in need. They are frugal with their money and any donations are used very wisely by this group. When my older horse became sick and frail they came and helped me with him the minute I called. Cheryl knew it was time for him to go to greener pastures, and I had selfishly kept him alive longer than I should have. It was so hard for me to put him down but it was time. He was 28 and had been my wonderful companion for years. It was a tremendous loss. Cheryl's kindness and understanding helped me through one of the most difficult times of my life.

Has always put the horses first, which is most important ... will bend over back wards to save a horse, donkey, pig. Oh shoot ...any animal in need. Great person to work with ..excellent Communication skills and loved by all. God bless them for what they do and how they do it !! Love them
Save the Horses is a utopia for animals and people alike. My daughter and I went to help the horses but found a purpose for helping all the animals that exist together at the farm with very few conflicts. They seem to know that by whatever means they ended up here, they were lucky to do so and are generally on their best behavior. They have the peace of knowing they are loved and safe.
You quickly learn that there's nothing glamorous about volunteering at Save the Horses. Along with the care and rehabilitation of the horses, there are necessary mundane chores to be done daily, and everyone must be willing to pitch in where and however they are needed at the time.
There's no hierarchy, and if you can't check your ego at the barn door, you're in the wrong place.
The volunteer who shovels manure and scrubs water buckets is every bit as necessary and as valued as the one who bandages wounds and administers medications.
The welfare of the horses is what it's all about.
Along with learning all that's involved with caring for horses you also learn of the horrors some of these animals suffer. You meet horses that have been starved, horses that have been physically abused, horses with terrible injuries that have gone untreated, and the horses who have simply grown old and were considered of no further value.
These are the horses that find their last best hope at Save the Horses.
Cheryl will tell you that all of her volunteers are unpaid, and it‘s true that there is no paycheck for these dedicated men and women. But working tirelessly to help bring a horse back from the brink of death and watching as your efforts slowly transform that horse into a magnificent healthy animal is a satisfaction that money just can’t buy. The volunteers heal the horses and the horses return the favor.
I no longer volunteer at Save the Horses because of Toka King, an injured OTTB I fell in love with there 6 years ago. In order to adopt Toka King and a beautiful one eyed quarter horse named Sunny, we put our home in a Cumming, Ga. subdivision up for sale and went looking for a suitable home for them. There were no properties in our area that we could afford, but we managed to find the perfect little spot for them here in Alabama.
I still miss volunteering at Save the Horses, but in exchange for that privilege I'm doing my part as an adoptive parent by providing a forever home and creating a spot at SavetheHorses for another needy horse.
I am indebted to Cheryl and Save the Horses for the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful organization and for the many ways this experience continues to enrich my life.
We have been a part of Save The Horses for 2 years. We came to make a difference with animals in need, never knowing how much the rescue would do for us. Two of my children have greater needs than most. One was adopted from a Siberian orphanage and struggles with the effects of neglect as a baby. Another one of my children was born with Neurofibromatosis, a random genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on his nerve endings. Both of them have been positively effected by the horses and the people of Save the Horses. The horses create a calm environment full of tremendous love and peace which has blessed us all. I am grateful for the opportunity to weekly serve this nonprofit!
I came to Save The Horses in January of 2012. I was retired and helping as a volunteer for Save The Horses allowed me to work with horses (animals for which I always had a deep affection and respect). Volunteering at Save The Horses is not always easy. You must be willing to be there 100+ temperatures as well as below freezing. The horses need to be cared for in rain and shine and hot or cold. Cheryl Flanagan began Save The Horses in 1998. I cannot say enough about the good heart she possesses and how she strives to care for abused animals, the old and the blind, race horses who can no longer run or have never run. We have animals who will never be adopted but they have a forever home with Save The Horses. I treasure the 21 months I have volunteered at Save The Horse. I have learned so much from both the humans and from the horses. We rescue these animals but they give the volunteers so much back that it is hard to tell who has rescued whom.
I began volunteering at Save the Horses in March 2013, I had just lost my job and wanted to spend my time off doing something positive. I had no idea what an impact it would have on me and I can't thank Cheryl enough for giving us all a chance to make a difference in these animals lives. Save the Horses is an environment for types of animal lovers, if you're not ready for large animals, we have lots of small ones and feathered friends that all need our love and care. It's a great place for kids to learn about the responsibility of caring for animals, we see a lot of parents and kids spending fun quality time together. I encourage you to come out and experience the sights and sounds that make Save the Horses so much fun for all of us, I guarantee it will change your life!
My kids and I have been volunteering at Save the Horses for just over a year now. Our work with these precious animals has been amazing! Every weekend, we look forward to our time at "The Barn". It has been so therapeutic to help innocent creatures as we work through our own difficulties in life. Not only does this facility strive to save horses - it also helps to save people!
Save the Horses is the most amazing equestrian farm I have seen. The founder/director, Cheryl Flanagan has the biggest heart of any one human being on the planet. She does more to save horses at the rescue than any other organization around. She opens the rescue to all animals...and humans. When volunteers come to help, they find themselves touched in ways they never imagined. I know, because I am one of them. There is a special "bond" happening there. If you ever have a chance to visit, you will understand.
My husband and I have known Cheryl for five years or more. She is an amazing woman with a heart as big as the globe. Her entire life is dedicated to loving and caring for horses, those that others have abandoned, abused, neglected, or simply can no longer take care of. She has save many from slaughter. Her motive is not about money or recognition, it is simply to honor the horses and to provide them with love and care and to give them every chance at a life free from fear and suffering. We adopted four of her horses and if we had room we would adopt more. There is something very special about Cheryl's role in this world and so many would have been lost without her.
I'm a lifetime equestrian. I have 3 senior horses that are my children. I know firsthand how expensive it is to feed and provide routine medical care to a horse. Cost's of treating a major illness or injury can be catastrophic. Cheryl F. makes certain that each horse that enters the gates of Save the Horses gets the care and attention it deserves. Some cases are horrific. The children and adults that volunteer get so much back that Cheryl always says that we rescue people too! The Rescue also has a therapeutic riding program that helps young people with special needs.
My goal is to help the Rescue find :
- New donors,
- Develop charitable giving strategies that will provide mid and long term income streams to help the Rescue operate in perpetuity.
- Find businesses and individual that are interested in donating "in kind", ie: their expertise and services to the rescue to: help redo our pastures, fix the roof, convert a small area into a medical stall for surgeries.
My husband and I had horses early in our marriage. They were our children. As the years went on, we realized we were missing something and had human children, two daughters, now 16 and 11 at the time of this writing. After the passing of my husband's horse, Rio, that he raised from a foal, we decided to bow out of the horse life for a while to focus on raising the girls.
Fast forward 10+ years, we move to North Georgia, the girls are getting older and we discovered Save the Horses and Cheryl Flanagan only a few miles from our home. We began volunteering the day after New Years 2013 and we are still there. Our involvement with the people and horses at this amazing place has changed our lives. We were longing for a place to belong and serve together as a family, the four of us. The interaction for our children with the many personalities and lives of the adults and children that volunteer at the rescue has been extremely beneficial and has prompted growth and maturity in many ways. We would not be who we are today without this time in our lives to serve here. For my husband and I, it has been such a blessing to have horses back in our lives again and in a way that includes our girls this time around.
My husband adopted our first horse, Hannah Grace, a thoroughbred mare on Valentines Day for me. Our second horse, Lovely Timber, also a thoroughbred mare was adopted for our daughter's 16th birthday by her grandmother. We are now moving to a home with acreage to have our dream of a small farm. All of this because of the journey we have been on these last months back to a horse filled life that started with Save the Horses rescue and Cheryl Flanagan.
Thank you, Cheryl, for all the ways you inspire us to love the animals and people that cross our path. You have added to our lives in ways we will never forget.
My daughter was just two years old when I was diagnosed with stage IIIC ovarian cancer. Imagine for a moment, being diagnosed with a disease that claims every 2 of 3 lives it touches...now imagine that you have this diagnosis and your daughter has just turned two. The journey ahead was difficult, the spectre of cancer threatening to take everything. It was a scary time, but a time of significant change for both myself, my partner, and my daughter. Twelve months later and still undergoing maintenance chemotherapy to help prevent a re-occurrence we were introduced to Horse Rescue Relief and Retirement Fund, Inc or as we call it Save the Horses.
My daughter was 4 when we began to volunteer at Save the Horses and we all began to heal. Save the Horses is an amazing place of healing. We spend our Sunday afternoons there rejuvenating our spirits in preparation for the week ahead and have only missed for subsequent surgical procedures in the last five years.
Volunteering at Save the Horses has brought our family closer together and it has allowed both my daughter and I to heal in ways I can not even begin to explain. Cheryl Flanagan is an angel - she and my daughter share a special bond and I am so proud of the young lady my daughter is becoming. With positive role models such as Cheryl and the other volunteers there at the rescue, I am confident she will grow into a confident, strong, and well grounded lady someday. Even though the name of the rescue is Save the Horses - sometimes the horses save us right back.
I have volunteered with "Horse Rescue Relief and Retirement Fund Inc" for about 6 years altogether. I really like how they operate. Volunteers, board members and the founder (Cheryl Flanagan) all work together side by side.
All the animals they take in are treated equal, no ONE life is any better or worth more than another.
I also like the fact that they have other programs that help people in the community and all over the country. They have Fido's pet "Soup Kitchen" for people struggling to feed their pets in these hard economic times and they also have a hay exchange for horse owners that have fallen on hard times.
I have seen them help countless animals and people alike with whatever they needed to help make life easier for them.
It's like the web site states on the front, they aren't just a horse rescue,, they are also a Human rescue.
