Hi! My name is Shane. or should I say, was Shane. I am a 3 year old german shepherd. Who better to write a review of this rescue! I may be young, but I have been through a lot in my short life. I was adopted last May and I thought that I had found my "forever home".I had a new mom and she and I bonded quickly. We went on fun trail walks, made lots of friends, and had lots of hugs and love and belly rubs. Life was good for both of us. But five months later, the day came for us to say goodbye and for me to go back to the rescue. My mom assured me that it was not my fault, but the fault of the rescue. You see, my former foster dad wouldn't let us be. We were just fine on our own and didn't need his interference. The only way my mom could extricate herself from his hostile manner was to surrender me back to the rescue. How truly heartbreaking for both of us! The best interest of the dog? Really? It's not easy being passed around and renamed. I know my mom wrote to their board outlining her experiences in an attempt to reclaim me, but they never had the courtesy to reply. So, we both lost in the end! Not only is this rescue not acting in the best interest of the dog, there seems to be no regard for the person on the other end of the leash! I would rate this organization a minus five stars.
I did not know Seth (Shane) the dog could write a review.
It's been a year since we adopted our shepherd from German Shepherd Safe Haven. First we fostered then we adopted. Our experience with GSSH was amazing. They are supportive through the whole process. The placement of Becca (now McKenna) in our home was done with consideration to our family unit and lifestyle. This rescue is in it for the dogs and that makes all the difference to me.
German Shepherd Safe Haven stands head and shoulders above other rescue organizations. The priority is the dogs. So much time and attention is spent on really understanding the dogs in their care so that a successful placement can be made. When a family adopts a dog, they become a part of the German Shepherd Safe Haven family. Families are supported well after the adoption is completed. There is a true love of the animals and their well being even when the dogs have been placed.
I have been volunteering with this rescue since January 2015 and am absolutely in love with the dogs we help and the rescue itself. I firmly believe that everyone involved with the rescue has only the best interest of the dogs in their hearts. Sometimes this can be a struggle, as a volunteer how can you not want to take these beauties home every day? If I had a mansion, believe me I would. But again, this rescue is all about the dogs and finding them the forever home they deserve. Tom, Jen and the other volunteers care deeply for every dog that comes into the rescue. This starts the moment the dog is rescued and truly never ends. You will never hear GSSH boast about how many dogs they've adopted out and how quickly they've done it because they believe in careful and proper placement every time. This minimizes the chance that a dog will end up back in a shelter or on the streets, and GSSH makes sure this never happens to their dogs. Although I have only been with the rescue for a year I have witnessed first hand the good this rescue has done for the shepherds. Many of the forever families stay in contact with the rescue and tell us of how happy they are to be a part of the GSSH family. GSSH takes great care in rescuing, fostering, and adopting out dogs. This can be a lengthy process because Tom and Jen take great care to get to know and understand every single dog that is rescued, and work on any issues they may have. This also applies to getting to know potential adopters, and families that have adopted. By knowing the dog and the family GSSH is able to make sure dogs are placed in a home that will be the best for them, forever. They also provide continued support to families to make sure the dog is well taken care of and the family is provided with guidance if any issues arise. As a lover of all dogs, but especially German Shepherds, I know that proper care and ownership is key to helping this breed. I have seen GSSH work to create a better rep, and better lives, for these dogs and plan to stay as a volunteer for a very long time.
I adopted a dog from German Shepherd Safe Haven two years ago. Tom has been an extremely valuable resource to me and my dog. I have telephoned him day and night to discuss training issues, nutrition, behavior and poop! He always returns phone calls. He frequently offers to drop everything to help out. He gets to know each dog individually and cares deeply about all of them. If he has a concern about the safety of a handler, dog or the public, he follows up to ensure everything is on the right track. Perhaps the poster below confused "dedication" with "interference." If you are looking to be a FOREVER OWNER and commit to your dog through the good times and the bad, you will not find a more honest, loyal supporter than Tom Williamson at GSSH.
The founder of this shelter (TOM) recently repossessed a german shepherd who was adopted by a woman in my neighborhood. This woman is one of the most responsible and loving pet owners I have ever seen. She took incredible care of her former german shepherd ,who had some serious health conditions, and gave her a long, happy life.
I heard the german shepherd she adopted thru "safe haven" was bitten by another from safe haven who was not on a leash, but her dog got taken away and not the other one?
I don't know what is going on, but if this establishment is rushing in and grabbing their german shepherds back from someone like my neighbor, I would definitely think twice about adopting from them.
Something isn't adding up, and NONE of it seems to be in the best interest of the dog.
This review has no merit. The person writing this review did not have direct contact with Tom the Founder. The dog was surrendered back to German Shepherd Safe Haven not repossessed as described.
I have been involved with this rescue since late 2011 and you could not find a better group of people. Tom and Jen know what it takes to operate a rescue the way it should run, where the dog comes first, nothing else. If the dog is not the right fit for the family, then they don't allow them to adopt. German Shepherds are a special breed and not for everyone. Tom and Jen make sure that the dog is the best fit and that is what sets them apart from other rescue groups. Their follow-up is incredible and it gives the forever families peace of mind knowing you have them to help you work through a problem after the adoption. I have seen first hand Tom help people with their German Shepherds that were not even adopted from their group. These were families that wanted to surrender their dogs to the organization and were at their wits end and he turned the situation around with some training advice and the families were able to keep their dog in the end. I am very proud to be part of the German Shepherd Safe Haven Family. You could say I found my forever home! Great dogs, Great people and a superior organization!
I adopted from this rescue and it was the best choice I could have ever made. They put the time and effort into every adoption to try their best to assure their rescues get adopted into a forever home. They also put time into training each dog before it gets adopted out and makes sure they are healthy. Worth every cent ...
GSSH is the most dedicated, compassionate group. They always have the German Shepherd's best interest first and foremost - they are the best!
I have followed this rescue for 2 years. It is beyond the very best rescue I have ever found. Tom is an amazing person, who puts the dogs first before anything else. I have so much admiration and respect for this rescue.
Almost a year ago, we were looking for a new addition to our home. We both had never owned a Shepherd before and loved what we had heard. A friend of ours recommended German Shepherd Safe Haven for all the reasons we were looking for a new family member. We spoke with Tom, who was courteous, compassionate and more than informative about any and all questions we had. What I thought was extraordinary about GSSH, is the amount of time Tom and his crew put forth to make our experience a memorable life long choice for us.
Tom and his crew truly believe in finding a forever home for his dogs. He was very clear that personalities are most important when looking for that perfect match for the family. I can 100% say without any reservation, we are one of the happiest families with our addition of our German Shepherd. Zeke (formally knowns as Luke) has brought so much joy to our family. Tom and the crew at GSSH work with each dog and ensure they are ready for adoption, and meet the highest standards of temperament when dealing with this breed.
One thing that will continuously bring us back to this organization is the family they create. Daily and weekly news feeds on his dogs. Events several times a year to keep the organization informed and feeling like that family is key with this group. I have heard others stories from other breeders or organizations, which they feel like they are being presurred or force fed a dog. This organization is the exact opposite. They make sure you feel like you are family and their #1 priority is placing that wonderful Shepherd to the perfect forever home. We are 100% satisfied and love Zeke more that anything. If you are looking to adopt a wonderful addition to you family, look no further, this is the group for you.
Most amazing rescue I worked with/follow . They are organized kind and are very involved with the welfare of the dogs even after adoption.
I cannot say enough good things about this organization. Tom rescued our dog (Zeke) after being told they were going to put him down for being "too aggressive." Zeke was barely one year old at the time. He had been abandoned and was scared. Tom worked with Zeke and was able to train him to be house broken, and very well behaved. We have had Zeke for almost a year now and every single day we talk about how lucky we are to have him. Tom is a great trainer and even more so, he loves every one of these dogs. Tom makes himself available at any time for questions or advice about the dogs, and keeps us in the "family" even after our adoption of Zeke was finalized. Tom will not just give any dog to any person, he will screen each one carefully to ensure they are a proper fit for each other. I am amazed at how he is able to do so much but so grateful he does. All his dogs have unique personalities and it is so easy to fall in love with them. It has been a privilege to work with this organization and continue the relationship even afterward.
We lost our white shepherd of 13 1/2 years and thought we could never replace her. Our daughter found gssh on line and saw a photo of two dogs she thought we would like. When I contacted Tom and asked about the first dog of choice, he talked to me for a while and then said, this dog is not for you, but the 2nd dog seems more of a fit. Two weeks later, after a meeting, a home visit & another conversation, Wynter was ours.
She is the most wonderful dog, we have had her for 10 weeks now, but the first two were not without a couple of adjustment problems regards territory & adjusting to my husband. Tom was always there are the end of the phone line to help & advise. He came to the house once, with her two foster moms then he came to the park twice to observe her. The problems were easily remedied, with Tom's knowledgeable & professional help and we have a pet who we adore & she loves us & is a wonderful companion.
Tom certainly knew what he was doing when he said Wynter was the one for us and his follow through to make sure that we were all happy (dog included) was wonderful
I am very proud to volunteer for the GSSH pack. This organization has such an incredible group of people who are completely dedicated to saving the lives of German Shepherds. Tom founder and Jen co-founder of GSSH, have built something amazingly special here in Orange County, CA! I absolutely LOVE this organization!!
Every GSSH dog rescued has their own before and after story. You can read about them over at the GSSH website. http://germanshepherdsafehaven.org
What’s truly amazing is that all of them seem to understand that their life has just been saved. GSSH adoptive pet parents can attest to this. In turn, our appreciative GSSH dogs are determined to reward their new best fit adopting family with an exceptionally close and enduring forever relationship. The bonds that are and will be formed are incredible! If you're planning to add a four-legged family member to your household, it doesn’t get better than that!
Check out our current scheduled Showcase Events listed at the GSSH website and then come on by and say hello. The GSSH dogs would love to meet you and show you their appreciation, just for visiting. And of course the GSSH volunteers would love to give you an up to date “411” on GSSH and their dogs!
If your looking for a close and enduring pet relationship, I certainly hope you’ll consider opening your home to one of our amazing GSSH dogs that is also looking for this kind of relationship with you!
I have been a donor to this organization since 2011. I have to say what attracted me to this organization is their dedication to the dogs. Some organizations you see out there it is all about stroking their personal egos and seeing how many dogs they can place in a year. Rescuing can be very challenging at times and sometimes you can be jaded and your mission might be steered in the wrong direction. Not GSSH they are all about the well-being of the dogs and nothing else. It is all about quality of placement of the dog, not quantity of dogs placed. They are a foster based rescue and know their dogs very well, when you know the dogs it is a lot easier to place them in a home. I used to donate to a couple other GS rescues and after seeing how GSSH operates, they are by far the most professional and the most welcoming group of people out there. If you want to donate to a reputable organization that actually treats their dogs as the center of attention. This is the one!! I am lifetime donor!!
GSSH is the best local nonprofit organization. You won’t find a more dedicated, professional and passionate group of people. My husband and I went to their annual picnic and it was awesome! What was so special was to look around and realize that all of those dogs had been saved and were in wonderful forever homes. My husband made the comment, “Boy I’ve never seen so many happy dogs in my life.” I’d say the “humans” were pretty happy too, knowing that they had made a difference as well.
GSSH has a warm and caring staff, who really want the best for the dogs in their care! They are professional and kind. The dogs are well-behaved as well as beautiful! Tom and his staff are the absolute best!
My daughter and I are new volunteer for GSSH. In our short time with the group we have learned that the founders and the other volunteers care deeply for all of the German Shepherds. The founders take great care to match the dogs with their Forever Families. It is clear that the dog is first in all considerations. The dogs they rescue are well mannered and trained.
My daughter has always loved GSD and when we met one of the founders, we decided it would be a great way to spend time with these beautiful and intelligent dogs without actually owning one. But, if we were to adopt a German Shepard, we would do so from GSSH because we know that the dog would be matched to us and more importantly, we would be matched to the dog.
I have read some of the other reviews and most say it so much better than I can.
We enjoy the Monthly Showcases where we meet the public (potential adopters) and give them information about the organization and the dogs. It is very true about the description on their website: “a fun group of people who find joy in simple things like a tail wag or a sloppy doggie kiss” The tail wags and abundant sloppy doggie kisses are a wonderful way to spend a few hours a month.
GSSH is the greatest local nonprofit organization. I am proud to say I am a volunteer with this organization. They really have a passion for German Shepherds and put the dogs needs first. They really take the time necessary to ensure their furbabies are going to a forever home and will be happy and safe. I always recommend the GSSH and hope to one day adopt a furbaby from them myself. Such an inspiring, genuine organization. GSSH is the best! =)
German Shepherd Safe Haven is a terrific foundation. Not only do they love each and every one of these wonderful dogs that cross their path, but they also truly take care of them and put their needs first. They make sure the dogs are healthy, spayed/neutered, and up to date with all of their shots. GSSH is also sure to train and discipline every dog that is welcomed into the GSSH in order to make sure their new owners will be happy and satisfied with their new member of the family.
They have created an extensive process in order to adopt their German Shepherds. Not because they want to be difficult, but because they want to be 100% sure that each dog is placed in the right home in every single story. They have yet to have any unsuccessful stories, and I anticipate (with their process) they won't run into any. This process also helps "weed out" the people/families who aren't willing to go through all of the responsibilities an addition to the household can be. I instantly fell in love with every single dog I work with and met, and am so lucky to be able to meet new dogs and be a part of their journey. Thank you GSSH for creating this great community and organization! =)
I am so impressed with how GSSH cares for thier dogs, they have clearly made it their priority to always do what is best for the dogs. GSSH takes their time to make sure the dogs get the right vet care, love, training the proper food etc. Its never about numbers or just getting the dog a home, its about taking the time and making sure all of the dogs under their care has everything he or she needs to live a healthy , happy life in an amazing forever home! It makes me happy to see they are saving so many dogs from these nasty kill shelters , and giving them a new life!!!!!
German Shepherd Safe Haven is not only a place where helpless dogs are given a second chance but it is also an organization that educates people about the misconception of the German Shepherd breed. There are thousands of abandon German Shepherds currently in the United States, most of them will never be given a second chance to live out their lives in a loving home. When I first volunteered for this organization, I loved that they are so different from other rescue groups. Every decision they make is for the greater good for the dog and the dog only. It is not for profit or just giving them out like christmas presents. They truly love and respects these precious dogs and tries to do the best they can with whatever they can offer. I am so grateful to have found an organization that shares the same passion as many of us dog lovers.
I'd spent the majority of my adult life doing Collie Rescue. I had my own rescue for several years before eventually merging it into an all-So. CA inclusive Collie Rescue and becoming a member of their board of directors. I finally retired from rescue in 2008, ready to enjoy life, feeling I'd done my fair share of animal rescuing. A few years later I became aware of GSSH and met Tom Williamson. I was so impressed with the organization and the way it was run, I called Tom and offered our services to do "emergency, short-term fostering". Needless to say, before we knew it, we were much more involved than we'd ever planned and found ourselves adopting Wrangler, an absolutely fantastic, approximately 7 month-old, male Shepherd. Wrangler went through training and is now a certified service dog. This was not what we'd planned for our retirement years, but fate intervened and Tom and GSSH worked their magic. After all my years in rescue, it's not difficult to determine the good rescues from the bad and even easier to recognize those that are absolutely terrific. German Shepherd Safe Haven is absolutely terrific! They take the time to work with their rescued dogs, find the perfect adoption matches and follow up after adoptions are finalized. They've earned and deserve every 5-star review they receive.
At the beginning of 2013, I made a new years resolution to begin donating a few hours of time each month to a worthy cause in my community. I began to look for a Non-Profit organization that would be a good fit for me. I had learned that millions of dogs were being euthanized each year primarily because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Since I loved dogs, I decided to seek out an organization that was truly dedicated to providing an alternative to this senseless killing. I checked out the local dog shelters and dog rescues as possible places to volunteer my services.
GSSH management described their young organization as “a fun group of people who find joy in simple things like a tail wag or a sloppy doggie kiss”. They were looking for volunteers to assist them at their monthly show case events, (holding dogs, greeting and talking with potential adopters, providing information and answering questions about their rescue). This sounded like a fun and healthy environment for me to achieve my personal goals of giving back. I filled out an application on line and they immediately put me to work.
I am now into my second year volunteering with GSSH and this organization is everything they have advertised! Not only is this a fun organization that deeply cares for the dogs they rescue, but they are truly appreciative of their volunteers.
Below is a video they put together to express their appreciation to the many GSSH volunteers that are making a positive difference in the rescue efforts of the GSSH dogs. GO AHEAD AND CHECK IT OUT!
If anyone is looking for a fun way to give back to their community, consider donating a few hours a month with GSSH where the tails are wagging and a lot of sloppy doggie kiss’s are awaiting!
Loving Dogs and wanting to rescue them from the many kill shelters, abandonments, etc., are part of every Dog Rescue’s mission. What separates German Shepherd Safe Haven (GSSH) and puts them in a league of their own are just two words, Their Founders!
Three years ago, founders Tom Williamson and Jen Cheng had a vision to create a professional dog rescue that put mistreated and abused German Shepherds first at every step along the way in a carefully laid out quality adoption process. Their partnership, an experienced blend of dog knowledge, entrepreneurial talent and leadership skills, has paid great dividends!
Today, GSSH sets the Standard of Excellence for Dog Rescues!
The founders recognize that a tremendous amount of time and energy are required to do things the right way. Anything less is not acceptable. Every detail is attended to by these quality individuals.
Just two examples out of so many.
Jen and Tom have designed a first-class website to provide the GSSH dogs with the best opportunity for finding their forever homes. www.gssafehaven.org Check it out! This elite site, that now sets it's own standard, utilizes the founders exceptional photographic skills for presenting the GSSH dogs to potential Forever Families. The GSSH dogs get it and love every minute of the attention they receive in their photo shoots! They don’t mind the amount of energy and time that is required to make this forever memory!
Us humans have all kinds of reunions during our life spans. So what has Tom and Jen done for the GSSH dogs? They created the German Shepherd Safe Haven annual Family Picnic event giving the GSSH dogs a place to reconnect with old friends and above all else, showoff their Forever Families! Check out the 2013 event along with the enthusiastic efforts of all involved that contributed to these forever memories at
There are so many other examples of what Jen and Tom have accomplished that has contributed to making GSSH the best! Check out all the other reviews to learn more!!!
Tom and Jen have built, and continue to attract, a special TEAM of talented and dedicated Directors, Advisors, Foster Families, Volunteers and Donors to support them in all their efforts for carrying out the Rescue’s mission.
Under their leadership, they and their TEAM have risen to the many challenges presented and are eagerly prepared for the unlimited opportunities that lie directly ahead.
This great young organization, GSSH, is ready to take their spot on the 2013 GreatNonprofit’s Top-Rated List!
We adopted Sheldon after losing our 10 year old and 14 year old Shepherds. GSSH saved Sheldon from death for a life with us, and without their commitment to rescue these beautiful and loving creatures, that would not have happened. GSSH really makes the effort to match personalities to insure the perfect fit for both dog and human, and we are proof of that!
We adopted a 8 month old female german shepherd from this organization. The whole experience going through the motions was terrific. I would highly recommend them if you are looking to adopt. I think the biggest thing is that once you have adopted a puppy and have any questions or need advice the founders are always available.
German Shepherd Safe Haven is a wonderful organization, and I wished I would have known them before we got our beautiful German Shepherd from another organization. Because he was not the right fit for us, and we are not the right fit for him, but nobody tried to find this out. Some organizations only count the number of dogs they can place whether it fis or it does not. But the people from Safe Haven helped us with their knowledge to make a difference. When you adopt a dog from this organization you are never without their help and support, if you have questions etc., and that is be very important !
I just think, this orangization is amazing and I recommend them to anybody who wants to adopt a German Shepherd.
German Shepherd Safe Haven in an amazing organization. They take a lot of time with potential families and matching up dos. They encourage fostering before adopting so the dogs don't end up back in a shelter. They make an extra effort to save dogs from many shelters that are high kill shelters. They show so much compassion for all of the dogs. We fostered our dog through them, and adopted her a couple of months later. She's a great dog! People always stop me and ask about her and I tell them about GS Safe Haven.
We volunteer and foster dogs in emergency circumstances, We also have adopted a great dog from this rescue, and continue to maintain a close relationship with them. All the staff at this rescue are helpful and knowledgable in the operation of the rescue. We could not be happier with our association with German Shepherd Safe Haven. Tom and his organization are totally devoted to the rescue and welfare of the German Shepherd breed.
What a wonderful organization. They have saved so many dogs that would not be here otherwise. They are so supportive and have given both German Shepherds and their adoptive parents so many wonderful memories. I can not say enough positive things about them! They truly care!
German Shepherd Safehaven is a special place. We have nothing but praise for this selfless organization that has a heart for the hurting and does something about it. We found our perfect pet "Kosmo" from German Shepherd Safehaven and it has blessed our life immensely.
The commitment of this organization is unparalleled as they rescue beautiful animals and take the appropriate measures to make sure the dogs are placed in the perfect home for that animal. It is a job that Tom and his staff do not take lightly as they work very hard to make sure the care of these animals will never be compromised again.
We have the utmost respect for Tom and his organization and we are thrilled to be able to get together with the other rescued animals periodically and keep in touch with this special organization.
Jerry and Robin Springer
Ps Kosmo says thanks.
I am currently a one-person rescue group who helps stray, abandoned, neglected &/or injured animals. I recently helped a stray Shepherd mix that was wandering in a local park. After having him scanned for a microchip, knocking on doors & posting flyers, no owner was found. I reached out to GS Safe Haven because I knew they had the tools & resources to find this sweet boy a home. Being unemployed at the time, I desperately needed their assistance. They were friendly, gracious & helpful. We met so they could meet the dog & once they discovered what a sweetheart he was, they agreed to take him & named him Newman. The care they take with their dogs is AWESOME! You can tell they truly care about the dogs & take great effort in getting good photos for their website, detailed bios & they're genuine. Luckily Newman found a wonderful home rather quickly & what a happy ending it was. I am so grateful to them & appreciate their efforts. If I lived closer, I would certainly volunteer with their organization! They also pull dogs (even purebreds end up in shelters) from high kill shelters which is a real blessing. Please support & adopt from these great folks!
We adopted a female german shepherd from German Shepherd Safe Haven last summer. Not only was the organization extremely professional to deal with, but they sincerely care about making sure that the dog and family are a good fit. They also continue to follow up after the adopotion to make sure both owner and dog are happy. The dogs available for adoption are cared for in foster care and are well taken care of and socialized. They were a pleasure to deal with and I would recommend German Shepherd Safe Haven to anyone looking to adopt a German Shepherd.
My husband and I are fostering Eli and will be adopting him this week. It has really been a good experience overall. Tom continues to give us endless advice and support while introducing him into our home. One thing that is most apparent is that Tom loves these dogs. It is amazing to see the transformation in the dogs after he has rescued, rehabilitated, and trained. If you have ever wanted a German Shepherd, I strongly urge you to contact them. This rescue is all about their love of these magnificent animals and getting them happy homes!
I am an animal lover and have always loved the German shepherd breed. My Experiance with rescues has been some what of a love hate one. I think rescues begin for the right resons but some where a long the way loose their sight of what's important. German shepherd save haven rescue is 100% in it for the dogs! I was and am impressed with their adoption process. They are very dilagent in finding the dog a forever home so the do not end up back in the system. This is key, otherwise your not rescuing at all, your just rotating the dogs in and out of the system while collecting an adoptin fee. Any rescue can adopt out but not many "find homes". The relationship they form with the new adopters is close and they don't leave them feeling abandoned with this new dog they don't know. They really get to no the dogs and truly love these dogs. While I volunteered, they gave me information to learn about all of the dogs so I new what I was talking about to potential adopters. I give German Shepherd Safe Haven Rescue an A+ . Ronna Eckholm.
German Shepherd Safe Haven is a wonderful nonprofit rescue! I know Tom the co-founder was very drawn into rescuing German Shepherds, which influenced me to volunteer. Although this rescue is fairly new, they work their events and interviews with possible homes, like they have been doing this for years. The rescue is very professional, organized and most important they look out for the best interests of the dog and pairing them with the right family/owner. I appreciate the training and the time they took to teach us how to properly handle a dog before walking a dog or attending events. I also appreciate the communcation amoung the rescue, they always gave us detailed facts about each and every dog before attending an event. Allowing us to be familiar with each dogs. Everyone was very communicative and was able to help each other out when needed. I believe communication is key, without it, it could be a disaster and we would look disorganized and unprofessional. Lastly, this rescue is super fun! Tom, Jen and all the volunteers are always a joy to be around and give such a positive vibe to helping these dogs find a home. And I can not leave out all the amazing dogs I got to work with, I've never met any dog that I didn't like working at this rescue, they all were sweet and obedient dogs. I will always and forever be a volunteer for German Shepherd Safe Haven.
German Shepherd Safe Haven has consistently provided me with everything I could want and much more in the process of adopting my beautiful dog, Daisy. I was apprehensive about rescue organizations, as I had been told many seek to place dogs in any home without considering whether the situation is a good fit. Tom and Jen from GSSH worked with me through a series of steps to make sure everything was okay, from a trial boarding period all the way through finalizing the adoption. I continue to call them today with any questions I have, and they always promptly come to the rescue! I know they love their dogs very much and settle for nothing but the best care and service for them, and their clients.
We adopted our beautiful German Shepherd Cassie from German Shepherd Safe Haven in May 2011. We had talked to other rescue groups, but they all just seemed interested in how quickly they could place a dog, and not if it was the right fit. Jen and Tom really did things differently, and we were so impressed. After talking to us on the phone, they brought Cassie to meet us at a park near our house, to see how she reacted to our family and us to her. We have a cat and wanted to make sure the animals got along, and Jen and Tom brought Cassie to meet our cat to ensure things went smoothly. They also did a thorough home visit, and then told us to take a few days before making a final decision. They were so professional in all their interactions with us, and so caring with the dogs in their rescue. I can not recommend them enough.
Tom and Jen helped us get our beautiful German Shepherd, Gretchen in October, 2011. We saw Gretchen on German ShepherdSafe Haven's website when we were looking for a dog. They reviewed our application, met with us, checked our references, and paid a home visit before placing the Gretchen with us. Jen had been fostering Gretchen and told us all about her so we were prepared when we adopted her. I email Jen every few weeks with updates on Gretchen. We had the best possible experience with German Shepherd Safe Haven. Tom and Jen truly care about their dogs and the families who adopt them.
I have to say I have visit them at the big adoption events Pet Expo, Irvine Animal Care Center, LaBrea Tar Pit Best Friends. All I can say is WOW what a different rescue group. All the events I have seen them at they were always very consistant with the way the organization was run. You can tell that it is all about the dogs. The booth set-up is top notch and always the same set up and very professional and calming. The volunteers are all wearing the same color olive shirt with a name badges on so you know who is working at the event. They are always welcoming into their booth, their dogs were all so well behaved and one thing about their dogs they are very clean and do not smell like dogs!! It seems to me that they are running their organization like a business and it reminds me when I go to the Apple store to compare them too. Great job Tom and Jen and all the wonderful people involved in your rescue group.
I was looking for a german shepherd that was just right... and I found her at German Shepherd Safe Haven. Not only did I find my dog, but I found friends and a support team from this adoption. Other rescues did not go the "distance" that Tom and his team did to evaluate the dog, research my history of dog experience, my references, home environment, etc. to be sure of a perfect fit. "Shawnee"( aka Kennedy ) and I are happily learning about each other since Tom brought her to me. She came with a new dog kit of food, toys, leather leash and all her medical records. They stand behind each adoption in that they will even come and dog sit for me if needed! They are like family now!
Being a part of this organization is the most rewarding experience I've ever had. To know that we are making such a big difference in the lives of the German Shepherds we save is very fulfilling. Our rescued dogs are amazing animals, still able to see the good in people and in the world despite whatever negativity they have encountered in the past. Fostering has allowed me to see the transformation these dogs make from being sick, sad and scared to happy, playful, and confident. A grateful look, a gentle hug, a sloppy kiss and wigglebutt tail wags from my fosters are just icing on the cake! And of course, we wouldn't be able to continue our rescue work without our great team of volunteers, board members and advisors as well as our donors and supporters in the community.
I've often witnessed of the great improvement in health and welfare of the German Shepherds between the time they are fostered until the time they are placed in their forever homes. I believe what drives this organization more than anything else is the best interests of their dogs. As such, I feel confident my monetary donations are spent wisely to the benefit of this awesome breed.
German Shephard Safe Haven is amazing! We would highly recommend them. After we lost our family pet of 14.5 years we did not want to get a puppy from a puppy mill and found them on the internet. They saved our adopted dogs from a kill shelter that keeps them less than 10 days. They were wonderful in arranging a time and location for us to meet our potential new puppies. They were just as concerned that we were a good fit for both the puppies and our sake. They helped arrange their final vacinations and addressed all our concerns in a professional, kind and caring manner. When we had a behavorial issue with one of our puppies (we ended up adoping a brother and sister), they were there to support us. Our experience with them could not have been better. They are saving dogs lives on a daily basis and we can't thank them enough for our new additions! Please help support this organization if you can.
Tom and Jen are 100% for the dogs. In the short time they have been a rescue they have saved so many Amazing dogs. Any dog they rescue is a reformed animal before it is adopted. On top of being a top notch rescue the people behind the scenes are great people.
As a long time member of the veterinary medicine community, and have plenty of experience interacting with animal rescues. I can say that without a doubt, German Shepherd Safe Haven is the most responsible rescue I have encountered. They consider each rescue from all angles before accepting them (prevents the over crowding and potentially volatile situations many rescues find themselves in). Each dog receives the same medical care as a family pet would, and behaviors are evaluated and corrected if necessary. Before adopting out, Tom and Jen carefully evaluate each potential home and if the dog would thrive there. They do a lot with limited resources, and are always up front and honest with their needs. Great job!
