As a journalist, I seek out powerful narratives that allow us to reflect on our place in the world, and stories that offer us lessons on how to be better. When we visited Forest Animal Rescue, we'd never seen such a wide variety of creatures, each living through their own challenging, gut-wrenching experiences of trials gone by. But the passion and dedication put forth by Lisa and Kurt, providing these amazing animals with comfort and peace, has made this rescue the very definition of the word "sanctuary." You may search the world, far and wide, but you will not find more ethically sound, caring individuals to place your trust in and throw your support behind. Truly, what they're doing in Florida for animals everywhere deserves recognition and praise of the highest order -- but they're not ones for taking credit. So please, help them rise, as the animals will be the ones to benefit. You can count on Lisa and Kurt to stretch those dollars on their behalf in the most miraculous of ways.Surane WeerasingheFilmmaker, 1999 Productions.Master of Science, The Columbia School of Journalism
I have known Lisa & Kurt for many years. They both gave up lucrative careers to devote themselves full time to their animals. The animals have always come first. I was with them at a defunct zoo in Sarasota. They didn't have the finances, but they took all of the animals because they had no other place to go. They spent the mortgage payment for their home buying heaters and building homes for the primates and others they rescued. They are an exotic animal sanctuary, but they have rescued numerous equines too. I have assisted in the placement of some of the horses. They don't have money socked away anywhere; they spend it on the animals. Their animals always come first.

A great place to learn. Kurt and Lisa have done such a great job with the animals. It's such a pleasure to visit the forest.
I used to volunteer for peace river refuge and ranch for 13 years before they moved to ocala they are an amazing rescue they give the animals they rescue a great life and amazing care
Lisa and Kurt are two of the most dedicated people I've ever met, and their animals are some of the best-kept I've ever seen in captivity. Their rehabilitation skills are the best in the state in my professional opinion.
Lisa and Kurt are two of the most dedicated people I've ever met. The animals they rescue are always their top priority.
I volunteered at PRR&R several years ago and had the most wonderful experience. The best interests of the animals is at the forefront of everything that Kurt and Lisa do and they work tirelessly. I will never forget my 6 weeks at the sanctuary!
The President & VicePresident of this refuge have devoted their lives to the animals and are extremely knowledgeable and experts in all the animals in their care.
I helped relocate the sanctuary several years ago and continue to support Lisa and Kurt's efforts to help these animals. The progress at the new location is nothing short of amazing and each animal is given the chance to live out its life in a natural environment, not as sideshows for the public. Lisa and Kurt's efforts to expand a program to rehab baby bears is heartwarming and necessary! They do everything with the highest respect and care for the animals, and I will us to support them through the years!
Lisa & Kurt absolutely love animals and it shows just how much by all that they selflessly do for them. This is a life long commitment and service to God for His creations. Well done!
The people that run this live every moment for the animals in their care.
When my mom was having 2/3 of her lung removed due to cancer and the only thing I found peaceful and comforting was volunteering for Forest Animal Rescue by Peace River Refuge and Ranch. During her surgery I was cleaning up after animals and observing them instead of sitting in a hospital crying. It was one of the most important days of my life. I'm thankful everyday for the care they provide for the animals and for the opportunity they gave me to help care for such amazing animals.
I volunteered for two years and loved every moment of it. The care that went into every animal was astounding.
Facility is so well maintained, there is incredible passion for both the care of the animals and educating others about the care, the need for these types of facilities, and policies related to exotic animals. Kurt and Lisa are amazing. It's very clear the animals always come first.
I just returned from volunteering at Forest Animal Rescue with Lisa and Kurt. I cannot emphasize enough the loving care and dedication I witnessed once again.
I had previously volunteered at their old location and came away knowing that once is not enough, and now plan to return a third time. Volunteering at FAR is a life changing experience. No setback deters Kurt and Lisa, and they always put the animals first. Looking into the faces of the animals in their care, one sees gratitude, contentment, and the happy lives that they so deserve.
Their commitment to lifetime care to these beautiful animals deserves recognition, as they truly are one of the "GreatNonprofits". They truly make a difference!
I highly recommend volunteering or donating to FAR. It can be a life changing experience for you too!

Thank you for the kind words - we are looking forward to your next trip to help the animals!
Great sanctuary! The animals always come first and Lisa and Kurt always strive to make it better and better!
I helped move the sanctuary from Wachula, FL to Silver Springs, FL last year. Lisa and Kurt are amazing in their devotion and protection of the animals in their care! It is a true sanctuary for the animals - many who have suffered abuse in the past. I support their efforts now and will continue into the future!
Great people. Great Mission. If you can help in any way the animals will be ever so grateful.
This is an awesome place to volunteer. Lisa and Kurt are really great at what they do with the animals. And they are very professional too. And the forest area that the animals get to live in is also good for the animals away from traffic. This is a great place to volunteer or just visit
Having volunteered for these folks in the past, I can not think of a more deserving organization! Lisa and Kurt truly care about the animals in their care! They work hard to provide a safe place for animals in need!
I have continued to be involved with this rescue, though not as much as I would like in the past few months! Both Lisa and Kurt truly care about their residents! They continue to work on expanding habitats and enrichment! P
In a world of self absorption and a throw away society, the owners/caretakers/volunteers of Forest Animal Rescue are truly there for the animals. There is no circus or animal show here...they furnish the best natural environment of peace that is possible for these animals that have come from horrific situations. Some they can rehabilitate and return to the wild. Others will need their care all their lives. It is hard work and it is expensive work. No matter how terrible the origins of these animals, they are given the best by Forest Animal Rescue. The owners and caretakers never give up their optimism or commitment. If you are looking for a worthwhile nonprofit to support, you have found it in Forest Animal Rescue.
