Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals, Education, Educational Services, Wildlife Sanctuaries

Mission: Forest Animal Rescue by Peace River Refuge & Ranch, founded in 1998, grew out of the need to find lifetime care for the ever-increasing number of wild animals in captivity living in substandard conditions or victims of misguided attempts to make them into pets. Forest Animal Rescue is comprised of volunteers who assist in the rescue of non-releasable wild animals throughout the United States and are dedicated to their lifetime care. We participate in nationwide networking of accredited sanctuaries, assisting authorities in locating qualified sanctuaries in other parts of the country. Additionally, a great deal of our efforts are directed toward educating the public about the issues surrounding wild animals in captivity as well as their wild counterparts. Our ultimate goal is to avoid the need to have wild animal sanctuaries by educating people on the complicated social and physical needs of these animals and teaching appreciation of the animals in their native environment.

Results: Over 100 non-releasable wild animals are receiving lifetime care at the sanctuary

Target demographics: stop the cruelty that wild animals endure in captivity

Direct beneficiaries per year: over 130 animals with lifetime care

Geographic areas served: the United States

Programs: Rescued animals at Forest Animal Rescue are provided with high quality care in a safe, peaceful environment. Through a strong international internship and volunteer program, students in the field of animal conservation learn ways to properly care for wild animals in a safe and humane manner. During their participation in our programs, they gain firsthand experience in ways to provide the animals with high quality and enriching lifetime care. Through public speaking, semi-monthly guided educational tours of the sanctuary and other community outreach programs, Forest Animal Rescue inspires others to help break the pattern of indifference toward the living creatures we share this planet with.

Forest Animal Rescue is a beacon of light and a true model of how our Nation should interact with wildlife. Their love, dedication, and respect to the animals that are in their permanent care, in inspirational. The manner in which they work to rehabilitate and care Black Bears, intended for release, is to the standard that other facilitates should be taught. I had the pleasure of volunteering, as an inter from Ohio, at the facility and miss it regularly. I currently teach and regularly utilize my experience there and their Facebook and webpage in my classroom. I cannot praise them enough for what they do!

This place is awesome! I volunteered for a few weeks one summer and had a great time and learned a ton about the needs of abused, neglected and abandoned animal. Kurt and Lisa have dedicated their lives to these animals, and their facility provides as natural an environment as possible. I wish I lived closer, so I could do more.

Great organization that is doing wonderful work for abused and or neglected animals. The new location will be such an improvement as they will never have to move again. That is such a relief. Owners and employees/volunteers are caring, compassionate people who believe in this cause, as do I.

This is one of the best sancuaries in the state of Florida or even in North America in my opinion. The array of animals is astounding and the amount of hard work and dedication seen in the pres. And VP of the sanctuary is also amazing. The education provided in the guided tour is more than found in most books and even on line. I volunteer at the sanctuary and the experience is one that could never be found anywhere else. Being involved with and volunteering at Peace River Refuge and Ranch is highly rewarding and never dull. When you leave you really feel like you have accomplished something and made a difference in helping the animals that the sanctuary has rescued from unfortunate situations.

Reace River helped a bear cub named Elizabeth Rose who was rescued from a horrible home. I helped by donating to her rescue and care. They have cared for her all this time as she has grown and thrived. My hope is to be able to go visit one day, and see more of the wonderful lives they have saved. They step in when others turn away.

At a time of need, Peace River Refuge & Ranch has stepped in to offer a forever home to a four month old bear cub that had been advertised for sale on a web site. An animal lover donated her own savings and together with a small group of friends, fund raised the rest of the cost of buying the cub and transporting her to the sanctuary. That was nearly 3 years ago, and Elizabeth Rose now lives free among other wild animals, thanks to Peace River Refuge & Ranch.
