Nonprofit Overview

Mission: Equilibrium Dynamics (EQD) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching adults and children how to build a life in which feelings empower, rather than sabotage relationships, activities and careers. Everbody has feelings. But not everybody is familiar with the fundamental principles and basic dynamics of those feelings. We teach key aspects of feelings as well as the related skills and strategies for managing them.  These topics are commonly known as emotional intelligence (EQ), emotional competence or Social Emotional Learning (SEL).  Research indicates that these skills and strategies empower students for success whenever they are applied. Goals: - Empower individuals to reach highest realistic goals in academic achievements, occupations, and healthy living in functional families. - Increase public awareness and practice of emotional competence skills to create thriving institutions and safe neighborhoods with community participation for the common good. - Partner with others for maximum impact and efficiency, putting emotional competence into practice. - Contribute to the knowledge and experience in this field and our own effectiveness through ongoing evaluation of our programs.

Results: The EQD curriculum for teaching emotional intelligence has been proven success rating. 91% of those who have taken a course found it valuable. 92% learned something they can use. 89% learned something to help them meet their professional and personal responsibilities.

Equilibrium Dynamics did a 3-part Emotional Intelligence series for our organization this summer. The trainers were engaging and offered relatable content for my staff that challenged their emotional maturity. We also got a chance to dive deeper on professional and personal experiences that we had never shared before. That's the type of space and environment EDQ creates. Our self-care is now at the forefront of every staff meeting now. We are even planning a staff retreat this Fall. Thanks to EQD, we now have polished emotional capacity and skills to help serve our youth.

EQD provided me with important and essential concepts that have helped improve, not only the quality of my own professional and personal life, but provided me with no areas of focus that I could pass along in my work with patients. Dr. Flowers presentation of material is not only engaging, but practical. Everyone I have ever met that has experienced EQD or Dr. Flowers comments on how positive and influential that time has been. I highly recommend EQD to anyone who thinks their personal or professional life could use a little more emotional competence. And if you don't think you could use that, then you probably need it even more than most!!

I began volunteering for EQD more than five years ago because I was impressed by its mission and by Dr. Flowers. My continued interaction with both the organization and Dr. Flowers have helped me enormously in both my professional and personal lives. Through my association, I have realized that my own emotional experiences of the world have been greatly muted but I am learning to re-allow emotion into my life and learning to manage the wide spectrum of emotions so that I am fully human in every moment. It is sometimes difficult work but the effort is completely worthwhile. I often speak of my volunteer efforts with EQD because I feel so strongly that others will also benefit from exposure to and use of EQD principles.

I cont. to grow from the exposure to the EQD curriculum. The last few months have added a lot to my effectiveness in my job setting using EQD as a way of structuring a pilot program to improve our relationship to law enforcement, for example.
I have had occassion to use it as well to work on changes to increase my healthy habits and decrease habits that undermine my health, using the support of personal relationships and the self responsibility portion of the curriculum. The applications of this curriculum are endless.

I have volunteered with EQD as well as donated to the organization. I have been so moved by the mission of teaching emotional competence that I have begun to train as a coach and apply the skill to various settings, including my own profession as a psychiatrist. We have used the skills in teaching MDs how to find balance and care for themselves, as well as teens in an at risk HS who are making decisions every day that shape their future, often driven by impulses and emotions they don't acknowledge or understand.

On six occasions during the last twelve years, Dr Flowers has been invited to spend ten days at Eton College in order to help members of the teaching staff to deliver the Personal, Social, and Health Education programme to students between the ages of 13 and 18. We have been inspired by her teaching and by her ability both to communicate and to model empathy. Her talk to sixteen-year-olds on “Growing into Responsible Adulthood” made a very powerful impact on the students. In a series of seminars, she also talked to our senior students about the responsibilities and challenges of leadership.
In addition, Dr Flowers made herself available for one-to-one and small-group consultations with adult members of the community. This opportunity was taken up by a good number of people, who found their conversations about specific issues, personal and professional, to be of enormous value.

I have known Dr. Flowers for over 25 years at the University of California, San Francisco and often invite her to present workshops. Since she began focusing Equilibrium Dynamics, I have been incredibly impressed with her work on emotional intelligence and the adept way she encourages people to recognize their feelings at work. Dr.Flowers is a very effective educator and presents her material in a non-judgemental and accessible way. She serves as an outstanding role model and always receives the highest kudos from workshop participants.

During our first experience with Dr. Flowers in our training, I was daunted by how much I was not comfortable with after reading her manual. The concepts were easy to understand but the idea of executing them with your own clients took more skills, practice and awesome guidance with Dr. Flowers and her team. The group who I trained with were exceptional professionals in the field and gaining experience with me. Because I was able to open up with my struggles with my own clients, the training was much more useful, and I was able to really gain insight as to how others were using it. I used Equilibrium Dynamics in the field of nutrition and nutrition counseling. At first, I was weary of how I can integrate the two along with pre-existing counseling methods but at the end of the program, I was more confident that I can do it, and I can use this skill to increase my abilities to help my clients with overweight, portion control, eating healthier, etc... I have also found myself to use the skills more in my own life where it now an every day thing. To be conscious of certain things in life. It has definitely changed the way I have view facebook. :)

Loma did a private workshop for our playgroup, and there were so many bits of wisdom I went away with, as well as wanting to dig in more deeply. My husband and I had a lot to talk about regarding raising our son and our marriage. The biggest impact the workshop had on me was remembering that I'm raising my child to be an adult, so depending on the adult I'm hoping he'll be, I should gear opportunities and lessons towards that goal. (She also was honest about us having lots of wiggle room to not be perfect, but be honest with our kids!).

I am writing to give my comment of Equilibrium Dymanics. I have been to 3+ of their various workshops and feel that my option is valid and significant. Their workshops are great and no matter how many that I go to they are always helpful and insiteful into me understanding more about myself and emotional development. Dr. Flowers and her staff really care and are professional women who are very pleasent and not only work well with other people (of any age and background), Flowers experience lends her to enable people to open up and feel safe in group settings. From Stress management to (3)Emotional Balance any and everyone would benefit from their services and I am proud to be apart of it and hope to see it expand!
