I have asked Defensa to cover the vet expenses of various dogs that were rescued and were severely abused, malnourished, with severe skin problems and with all kinds of serious health issues. Defensa has always paid the vet costs in those cases. This organization is very committed to the cats, dogs and horses not only in the Rincon area but provides help to animals all around the island. These are the pictures of some of the animals that I requested help from Defensa and they have covered their expenses. Two of them have been adopted, one flew to New York and is in a foster home and the other one still needs to get treatment for the heartworm in Puerto Rico but has already been accepted in a shelter in New York and will be flying there when the vet gives the clearance. These stories have happy endings thanks to the support provided by Defensa. Nerylú Figueroa
I rescued Luna from the school where I work. Somebody had thrown her away in a small box next to our school's garbage bin. Then I saw she had a small tumor and wasn't sure what to do. I contacted someone I knew had rescued several dogs and she told me about Defensa. They have helped with all of the veterinarian costs for Luna's healthcare. She has several health conditions at the same time (vaginal tumor, hookworms, heart worms, anemia, and a skin condition) and they have been extremely helpful. Luna has had 3 weeks of antibiotics and had to take 3 other medicines to help her get stronger to get a biopsy done on the vaginal tumor. After finally getting her hemoglobin to normal, the vet did the biopsy and determined that the best option would a type of chemotherapy to treat it. Luna still has a long recovery process ahead of her, but Defensa will be here to help every step of the way. We have been blessed by such an amazing nonprofit. I tell everyone I know how wonderful they have been to us!
After hearing of the dog situation in PR on CNN I contacted Defense. Cynthia was a great help. I couldn't have rescued one without her assistance. I was coming from Canada and really appreciated the help with vet papers and a kennel. I'm hoping to arrange another adoption in the very near future through her. Great organization!
Hello we had lots of help from Cynthia Calvin. We were moving from arecibo to Rincon and a stray dog had 9 puppies. We were panicking wondering what we could do because we couldn't leave the mother and puppies and our new place in Rincon had a strict policy of no animals. Addie a friend of the rescue accepted the mother and puppies. Unfortunately at the time there was only 8 puppies. This organization has help so many animals with fostering and adoption as well as medical expenses. Puerto Rico is very lucky to have such caring people. They are doing the best they can with the little funding they get from locals, businesses and tourist. They have made an huge impact by educating as well. They deserve lots of funding
The adorable pup below is just one example of many forever home placements of street animals in Rincon by Defensa Animal De Rincon. "Willy" has found his forever home and I had the pleasure of falling in love with him. But his forever family would not let me take him home with me. That means I'll just have to start fostering animals where I live in the USA.!
While visiting Rincon, it was fun to witness one rescue in action ; an orange kitten named Tranquilo whom I also fell for. But alas, due to the good connections and kind people of Defensa Animal De Rincon, he was spoken for.
The folks of Defensa Animal De Rincon are all volunteers. They do much for animals with very little and every donation helps. The more we give, the more they can save lives, provide essential medical care, and daily food and medicine. Thanks for giving and thank you for all you do for the animals!
These are wonderful people in the trenches, getting their hand dirty to make this world a better place for mistreated animals. You won't find a nonprofit that will worh harder and do more good with your dollars.

Princess was found with her 2 babies in North of PR, I was their foster while DAR paid all vet care the 2 babies found their forever home in Chicago and I am happy to announce I will be Princess' forever mom! Princess likes to sleep in my bed and she is kind of a destroyer but i do love those ears and that wet nose she loves to have attention! Second story Ash (white dog) he was found in Guanica in terrible conditions DAR once again paid vet services and got him in great condition he had severe skin problems he flew 3 weeks ago and he is currently in NY being fostered waiting for his forever home :) Thanks DAR so much without you these 4 happy endings wouldve not been possible!!
I am so grateful for Defense Animal De Rincon! We have a very sweet mama cat that was abandoned at our house and has recently had 5 kittens. Trying to find homes for kittens in Rincon is like selling water by the river but Defense is doing so much to help us get the word out and also to cover the costs of having the mother spayed.
Hopefully she can now have a break in life and not have to keep having babies all the time.
Thank you Defensa Animal De Rincon!

I visited Rincon, Puerto Rico 3 years ago on vacation, where I met an extremely fearful, skinny, apparently nursing young dog mother. My sister and I tamed and fed her for the week we were there, having several conversations with Cynthia from DAR, who encouraged us to take her with us when we left because that would be the best fate for her. Neither my sister nor I thought this could be possible, so we had to leave her behind. The next day another DAR volunteer found this sweet, scared dog, and was able to get her in the car to take her home and foster her, along with her many other foster dogs.
When I got back home, I sent DAR a bunch of pictures of this doggy so they could put her up for adoption on their website. The next day, I saw her picture up there, and realized I needed to have her with me. So the DAR folks organized everything (these are all volunteers, mind you) from her health certificate to a ride to the airport at midnight for her journey to Boston.
My sweet Pupito (I know it should be Pupita--forget about it!) is living on Cape Cod now, fat and happy, thanks to the infinitely kind and generous folks of DAR.
