Mission: Butte Environmental Council (BEC) is a 501(c)(3) organization that was founded in 1975 as a cooperative with

representatives from five environmental groups. Since its inception, BEC has been the principal voice for education, sustainable development, healthy watersheds, and the preservation of open space and agricultural lands in the northern Sacramento Valley. BEC's first major contribution to Butte County came with creation of a multi-use recycling service in 1977. The organization's activities soon expanded to include cultivating grassroots momentum to facilitate ecosystem preservation, natural resource protection and restoration, and compact human communities.
