Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Nonprofit Management

Mission: Big Tree International (BTI) was founded in 2011 with the mission of helping a handful of orphans in China. BTI quickly became one of America’s fastest growing nonprofits, with offices, staff and volunteers around the world, serving over 10,000 orphans globally. We were considered among the top 2% for transparency and impact in the United States. Within 5 years, we had leveraged more than $20 Million towards orphan care and community transformation projects around the world and (most importantly) our international programs were completely self-sustaining and run by the local communities. In the Fall of 2016, BTI leadership met together again to discuss next steps. Our group, all sitting on multiple boards and focused on the big picture, decided to put their energies to supporting local nonprofits’ growth and connecting resources to needs. Leveraging our network of relationships and experience to do what we are really good at – growing and advising nonprofits to be successful. Today, BTI builds a better world by offering nonprofit consulting services to strengthen the capacity of local nonprofits addressing society’s most important challenges.

Results: The United States has over 1.5 Million tax-exempt charitable organizations, yet only 2.4% of them account for 90% of total reported revenue of $373.25 Billion. In other words, most nonprofits are competing for funding scraps even though there is more than enough financial food to go around. The problem we have seen is that most nonprofits do not have the experience, expertise and relationships to access those resources. BTI’s team of experts knows how to help nonprofits with their capacity development challenges.

Target demographics: Capacity development for small nonprofits

Geographic areas served: Serving local nonprofits

Programs: Growth Assistance Program (GAP) – A systematic and proven 12-month program where we provide our full suite of services to help qualified local nonprofits bridge the gap between where they are in their growth journey and where they want to be. Functioning as their behind the scenes advisor, we provide an infusion of tools, awards, resources, capital, strategic relationships, confidence and credibility to the small nonprofit who did not previously have the capacity to grow. Participants are selected who 1) we believe in their cause, (2) are poised for growth and (3) have what it takes to have a long-term “ripple effect” for large scale social and economic development of their community. We primarily serve organizations working on education, environment, arts, and family services. General Consulting Services – Customized, needs-based consulting in fundraising, strategic planning, grant research and writing, board development, compliance, marketing communications, risk management and income strategies that help non-profits organization become more effective and sustainable.

We have been repeatedly impressed with the integrity and energy of Big Tree International founders; their vision in caring for others, going the second (and third) mile to bring help and relief to those most in need, and in sustaining a vision for what that care and provision needs to look like next year and in five or ten years in order to be effective and progressive. Five stars well deserved! The Spear Family Foundation
