Beyond Shelter has helped me so much. Just three years ago, I walked into their office with no place to go. The moment I stepped into that office, my life changed forever. Now I have my own place, a good job, and now I can take care of my own family more
Key Facts
Target demographics:
Beyond Shelter serves very low-income and homeless families with children in Los Angeles County. The agency's Institute for Research, Training and Technical Assistance is the division of the organization that conducts research, publishes manuals and policy papers, and provides training to other organizations and cities throughout the United States in innovative methodologies, including "Housing First," which is now also referred to as "Rapid Re-Housing."
Results to date:
Since the inception of the Housing First Program in 1988, more than 5,000 families have been assisted to move out of shelters and into permanent, safe and affordable rental housing in residential neighborhoods.
Direct beneficiaries per year:
4,000
Obstacles:
Beyond Shelter continues to encounter many families who are losing jobs and housing during the recession. Beyond Shelter is working hard to develop new employment programs and alternatives for parents, but many families are enduring longer and longer shelter stays as a result of limited affordable housing subsidies, and the high rate of unemployment in Los Angeles County.
Someone who had 3 hours of volunteer time could:
From November through December, volunteers are welcome to assist in organizing and preparing toys, clothing and other holiday gifts for families. In South Los Angeles, Beyond Shelter's two Neighborhood Resource Centers have many different volunteer tasks and needs that could accommodate short-term projects.
2 hours of volunteer time could:
tell five friends, co-workers or families about Beyond Shelter and come up with a simple, quick plan to help.
What your donation will allow us to do:
work to improve the lives of more than 4,000 homeless or at-risk parents and children a year in Los Angeles, and to continue to work for systemic change to combat poverty and homelessness among families with children.
A donation of $100 enables us to:
Provide one night of emergency, crisis lodging for a family and work to find a longer-term, stable solution for them.
A donation of $500 enables us to:
Provide the "Housing First" Program to a family for one month (the program is not a shelter - this would represent one month of work to find permanent housing, employment, and to stabilize and begin to rebuild their lives).
A donation of $1000 enables us to:
For every family that is assisted by the "Housing First" Program, Beyond Shelter must raise $1,000 from the community. A donation of $1,000 would sponsor one homeless family through the entire program successfully.
