It breaks my heart to write this review. I have been scared to share my story for fear of retaliation from Zuma’s founder. Ultimately, I decided to share my experience in the hope that others will be able to make an informed decision before becoming involved with Zuma’s.

I was involved with Zuma’s as a volunteer and riding student for over a year. I believed in Zuma’s mission and volunteered countless hours with Zuma’s. I did everything from mucking paddocks to participating in fundraising and event planning.

Unfortunately, the cracks quickly became apparent. Zuma’s lacks the financial resources, staff, and volunteers to provide adequate care and training for 70+ horses. Zuma’s calls itself a rescue, but it would be better viewed as a forever sanctuary/hoarding situation. Rescues typically focus on rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding loving homes for animals. Zuma’s is different because they do not typically allow adoptions, meaning the horses are at Zuma’s for life. The founder allows very few adoptions per year (typically less than 5) and usually only adopts to her close friends. Many qualified staff, volunteers, and riding students expressed interest in adopting horses and were not even given an opportunity to apply. The only adoptions have been to their close friends. It is so sad to me that the quality of the horses’ care at Zuma’s has greatly declined due to lack of resources, and yet they will not allow adoptions to loving, qualified homes. The horses deserve more than being part of a hoarding situation.

The horses do not receive enough training to be safe enough for riding students to ride and handle. In order to be safe to ride, the rescue horses need more training and attention to detail than Zuma’s is capable of providing at their current herd size.

Zuma’s also has incredibly high staff turnover. They do not value, respect, or compensate their staff and therefore many of them leave after only a few months. They also don’t pay people on time, leaving them in a difficult position financially. It is heartbreaking to see motivated staff leave due to mistreatment.

My final “breaking point” with Zuma’s was when I discovered that the horse I sponsored via monthly recurring donation was not receiving adequate care. I spent hundreds of dollars to sponsor the horse and he was underweight and in pain. I raised my concerns with Zuma’s staff and Jodi several times without success. It broke my heart that the horse I bonded with was not being properly fed and cared for, despite my generous monthly donation specifically for his care.

I hope that Zuma’s will take steps to improve the quality of care that the horses and staff receive. I think about the horse I cared for often and my heart breaks that I will never get to see them again. Once you step away from Zuma’s, even on good terms, you will not be welcome to return. This has consistently been the experience of all of my friends from Zuma’s as well. It is a toxic environment due to management.

Hopefully this review helps you better understand Zuma’s. I wish it wasn’t the case.

I have read some of these comments, and I first want to encourage everyone to experience their own experience at Zuma's, and know that people can catastrophize anything they want to, including a papercut... So, I highly recommend this place, and welcome all to go visit it. Spend time with the horse and know that is what it is all about - the horses and you, and with that in mind who knows what else you might discover. In time you will realize the experience is about brining hope into your life, know that change is possible, peace should be everyone's goal, and above all love all creatures. So go to Zuma's and go experience Heaven on earth.

When you search through the reviews of this place, take heed to the lower star reviews. Even though they claim 'Rescue' it's much more of a hoarding situation that the owner/director uses to manipulate and disrespect the people that care most for the horses there. I have personally seen the executive director hit a horse while she was attempting to groom the mare. This mare is also one of the sweetest and respectful mares at the barn, and if you are are horse person you know that if a horse like this (all horses really) reacts to you with a warning than it is something YOU did. These words were even spoken directly to me on multiple occasions from the ED when I was managing my horse and her reactions towards me.

When it comes to my own personal relationship with a horse at Zuma's, I lease a horse there for quite sometime and had gotten to know her very well. This horse was in the lesson program, but when the original trainer was there was considered partially retired only riding 2-3 times per week as she was older and had some physical limitations that I took a lot of time and effort to learn to work with and manage as her primary caregiver. After a massive exodus of 10 employees on a single day (will expand on this next) this horse in question was put into the lesson program 6 days a week and became lame 3 times in 2 months. When I approached the ED about it and stated that "she has been ridden every day" her response was to sigh at me and say, "all the horses get Monday's off" completely disregarding the horse and her needs as well as my input and knowledge of this specific animal.

Let's talk about the massive employee exodus... The ED will say things like "they had a disagreement" or "they had differences of opinion" or basically anything to put owning up to her mistakes onto her former employees (if you can call it that, it was closer to slave labor that an actual employer/employee relationship). Without airing everyone's personal stuff out there, I personally have heard of multiple accounts of belittlement, disrespect, and outright illegal employer activity. This is why 10 people quit on one day. 10 people that have been with a company for 3+ years (some of the 5+) don't quit in one day due to a disagreement, they quit because they have had it with the treatment they have received.

Finally, to my point that this is a hoarding facility, not a rescue. The ED adopts horses left and right, then cannot afford the cost of such high cases, and WRACKS up the prices of her facility over night without giving anyone notice. Scratch that, I do remember receiving an email the DAY the my leasing fee lessons went up. Then, she treats her facility akin to that of a show barn with top of the line horses, asking for similar fees, or more to accommodate her poor spending choices. The true definition of a rescue is a place that rescues animals, regardless of from where and then adopts them out to new loving homes, so that they can repeat the process of saving more lives. However, Zuma's adopts more than they can handle, scours their clientele for more at the drop of a hat, and keeps the horses that could have found loving forever homes in the name of making more money in their lesson program. (A program where the trainers turn over at about every 2 months due to poor employment conditions). If you do actually get the opportunity to adopt a horse, make sure you read the fine print and get a copy of that with your brand card. The ED has a way of adopting out horses that aren't actually hers to adopt out, or weaseling her way into creating a contract where you have no rights, say to like move the horse to your land, or to a barn closer to you.

The ED should be investigated for so many things.

It sucks, because there are animals there that are truly amazing and in need of loving and caring forever homes, but the ED is a narcissist who uses the rescue as a means to feed her own ego.

Volunteer, lease, ride, or learn somewhere else.

I’m deeply saddened to have witnessed the deterioration of Zuma’s Rescue Ranch during my absence. When I entrusted the day-to-day operations to a family member, hoping to create a succession plan, I never anticipated the severe decline that followed. The revenue drop alone speaks volumes—our profits fell by 43% from year to year, and if you compare the financials from 2022 to 2023, you can see how devastating that period was. Worse yet, under that leadership, horses lost weight, some passed away, and I was even pressured to euthanize several senior horses. This is something I never imagined would happen under our care. Additionally, I’ve seen numerous negative reviews—many written under fake names, too afraid to be transparent. Most of these seem to stem from situations where people were denied riding privileges because they exceeded the safe weight limits for the horses or were unable to adopt because they lacked the resources to properly care for a horse. Some riders casued more h

Please review the recent stories posted here and it will tell you what you need to know. Looks like this place used to do some good, but it's clear things have gone off the rails. There is extreme turnover with trainers and HIGH pressure on leasing and paying for horses that aren't even really safe to ride. You are asked to pay for training on a horse that you don't own and you are asked to commit to really high payments up front to participate. Articles and materials shared by the non-profit paint a really pretty picture, but when you start getting involved, it is really clear that there is some extremely ugly stuff going on, especially when it comes to the executive director/self-proclaimed "owner" of the non-profit. She says a lot of bad things about other people, businesses and other rescues, which left a really bad taste in my mouth.

If I could select no stars I would. Read the reviews here and see what's real. A slew of positive reviews solicited by the executive director do not invalidate the accurate comments from the less than 5 star reviews.

This "non-profit" is a narcissist's hoarding operation that is funded and staffed by volunteers and donors who don't realize how much fraud is taking place. The board is made up of the founder (and executive director's husband), boarders that the ED has trapped into serving, and others that the ED has bullied in to taking a spot. The ED tells the board what to do, threatened to sue the entire past board (that was made up of actual board members) and forced the entire board to resign. The "saving lives" nonsense being advertised everywhere is applied to nothing about Zuma's. While some horses have been rescued from horrible circumstances and now are fed and cleaned up after, they cannot be adopted (unless you're willing to keep the horse on site forever, thereby continuing to fund the founding families hoarding. There are almost zero actual mental health programs and nothing is free. There is a riding program that helps fund the care of the horses, but the horses hate it, the energy is terrible and people are regularly getting injured. Injuries have been increasing since the staff changeover that the executive director keeps referencing in the responses on this site. Horses don't get training unless you pay for it, even though they need it to be safe in the program. If you expect to have a saddle that fits the horse you ride (that is in the riding program) you can expect to be told you have to buy one. There is now a "semester" program to trick you into overpaying, paying up front and being on a strict schedule that works for the last remaining trainers willing to be there. Don't believe the pretty lipstick that the executive director/founders keep trying to slap on this. It is not a non-profit benefitting anyone other than the family that owns the barn and their need to keep every horse and control of every person involved.

Over my year visiting Zuma’s, I saw horses health and body weight decline rapidly. You’d expect them to be rescued and be initially skinny and be rehabilitated; but no. These were healthy horses, some new to the property, whose weight just fell off. The hay was bad, it was beyond dry and not nearly enough for the horses. While the property is beautiful and large, the paddocks were way too small for the number of horses in them and I frequently saw completely empty water troughs. Multiple horses, who each time I was there, were even skinnier than the last time, all of their ribs were protruding, could barely walk and looked like they were in a lot of pain. Sketchy and looks neglectful/abusive. They always seem like they’re trying to make money off you in any small way possible. The ranch owner/ED will not listen to your concerns or ideas (doesn’t matter if you have a decade of horse experience, ownership and or education, ie), blame shifts, and always thinks she is right. Oh and don’t share your opinions if you don’t want to get bullied into silence or online.

There are so many amazing horse rescues in Colorado that actually do what they claim they do and are better to support! Don’t support one that is begging its followers for positive reviews to cover up the negative experiences. My family’s foundation gave them a grant and it is deeply regretted.

If you’re going to make accusations about an organization, please ensure they are backed by facts rather than personal opinions. Zuma’s Rescue Ranch is transparent in its operations, and our gates are open every day for anyone to come and see what is truly happening. Yes, as with any aging animals, older horses do experience natural deterioration, but they are far from neglected. They are provided with high-quality hay from Westcliffe, not dry or inadequate feed. Additionally, they receive routine hoof care every six weeks, annual dental check-ups, and a range of supplements and herbs to support their health as they age. It is true that the organization suffered during the founders' absence in 2022-2023, and the entire staff was asked to leave. Your opinions are simply not grounded in fact, and we encourage anyone concerned to visit and see for themselves the level of care our horses receive.

I used to attend groundworking and liberty lessons and would occasionally volunteer here The barn itself is beautiful. Pretty white fences and great views. But the horses are not in the best condition. I know it's a rescue and you anticipate to see at least some imperfections with the horses there.
But if they are buying horses in not the best conditions you would assume that the horses would recover and start healing after being "rescued" by Zumas.
Lets consider the Montana three: three ponies brought from auction. Now Zumas held classes around them so they were very socialized for over a year I saw them grow but due to the amount of horses at this location I saw a decline in their care. They went months without being groomed during shedding season. Due to work and family emergencies I stopped attending the baby work classes around November, When I came back to start up lessons with them in March all three horses had thick matted fur along their bellies. It took over an hour and even at the end of the class we did not get all the mats and pure feces and mud out. I finally had to call it a day, after packing up their grooming kit to put away I passed the information along to staff and owners regarding the condition of the Montana three and they pushed the blame onto me, for not taking more baby walk and grooms to keep more on top of it. Mind you I am not a paid employee it was not my responsibility to care for the horses they bought. They seem to blame anyone but themselves.

Sorry you feel that way; the horses do get long coats over the winter, and when they lay down in the snow, the fur mats. We do the best with the funds we have to ensure the herd is healthy, hooves trimmed, vet care, worming protocols, sand, and fecal slides performed monthly. We do rely on our community to assist with some of the noncritical care items like grooming. No one should have blamed you, for that I personally apologize for that.

Former employee here(5+ years ago, so before the recent batch of apparent drama). It saddens me to see that nothing has changed with Zuma's. This rescue had great potential to be something amazing. Instead the ED as we will call her just used this potentially amazing project as a tax write-off and a way to fund her hobby. The ED and her husband are probably the most self-center and entitled people I have ever met. They would spend every possible minute talking about their accomplishments and their daughters accomplishments. If they were not bragging about something "amazing" had done they were trying to figure out how to make a quick buck off of you or if they could pimp you out for money in some way. The rescue had some simply amazing staff and volunteers that would bend over backwards to make sure the animals were happy and healthy. There were several long-term volunteers that would spend 5 or more days working tirelessly to make sure everything was just the way Ms. ED wanted it, it appears that she has accomplished a difficult feat and has run these people off as well.

Think twice about volunteering or supporting this nonprofit.

You are sadly and boldly misinformed about tax write-offs as a hobby. The facility is donated at no tax benefit to the owners. Get your facts straight before slandering the organization. Further, neither of the property owners rides horses and hasn't for 10-plus years. The owners have donated the facility and their time to the horses and other animals since 2004 for the love of the mission. There are many places to volunteer; if volunteering is in your heart, please do that elsewhere. If you don't like the owner, that is your prerogative, but it has nothing to do with the mission and the countless lives saved. As for staff turnover, the staff on 6/21/23 were asked to step up and do their jobs or step aside to allow the organization to bring in folks who wanted to be here (the organization revenue had declined 45% in their charge). They have been here seven years, three years, four years, and two years.. We restructured; it's that simple.

Passing judgment without knowing the facts demonstrates a significant lack of understanding. This rescue is not a tax write-off for the founders. In reality, the founders personally fund a substantial portion of the expenses. The rescue operates on their property with no costs for rent, utilities, or other overhead. When funds are low, it is the founders who step in to cover shortages, ensuring that the rescue continues to operate smoothly and the horses receive the care they need. the founders work daily and have never received funds from the non-profit; they are hands-on with cleaning, feeding, hosting events, and more. Are volunteers asked to leave if their presence is more of a hindrance than a benefit? Sadly, yes, some folks are asked to leave and not return. Before forming opinions, I encourage you to understand the full picture. Zuma's gates are open daily for anyone to observe the care and condition of the horses first hand.

Zuma's is an amazing organization with so much love for the horses under its care. I feel so fortunate to have found this community of fellow horse lovers. My daughter and I have been coming to Zuma's for the past year and have learned so much about equine care, communication and wellness. Of course a non-profit of this size with a large proportion of sanctuary horses has its challenges but the horses are extremely well cared for by dedicated staff and a massive team of volunteers. We enjoy our time at Zuma's several times a week.

*Before reading, please know that I am not affiliated with the so-called disgruntled staff that "zumas girl" keeps referencing. This is based only on my personal experience with this "charity."*

I volunteered at this facility many times, attended a Halloween event, a Christmas event and took some lessons with two of the trainers. At first, everything seems idyllic. It is a beautiful property with so many lovely animals and views. The longer you are around the darker things get. You notice lots of turnover. There are always reasons for all kinds of things that don't make sense. It is never anyone's fault except for "bad staff" or "lazy millennials." Ages, conditions, and stories about horses are super inconsistent and it's hard to know what the truth is. Unfortunately the founder/director/owner is extremely judgmental of others and shares her opinions and disdain openly to anyone who will listen. She wants you to know that she owns everything and does everything, but anything negative is never under her review. I loved the horses and other volunteers that I met, but there was a lot of stuff happening that made me worry that my donations of time and money were not actually supporting what I thought I was supporting. Colorado has many great horse rescues and you can find lots that are actually helping others, not just talking about it.

Notice a lot of new reviews coming in right now because Zumas is actively soliciting new reviews to try to bury negative ones.

A recent turn of events most certainly brought on these negative reviews. “Zuma’s has learned that a handful of former employees and their associates are spreading misinformation about the organization and our commitment to the animals we rescue. Zuma’s denies that misinformation in the strongest possible terms, and our reputation and results speak for themselves. Zuma’s commitment remains as it always has: to provide 24/7 care for our herd of over 60+ rescued animals regardless of the rain, snow, or shine. Nothing can change that.”

Zuma's financials are transparent and available for public review on GuideStar. You can examine our 990 statements to see exactly where our funds originate and how they are allocated. As for any personal differences with the founder, those are subjective opinions, not grounded in fact. In 2023, after reviewing the organization's performance over the past few years, it became evident that things had declined while a family member of the founder was in charge. The entire staff was shown these results and given the choice to improve their performance or leave. Ten days later, the entire staff chose to depart. Despite these challenges, Zuma’s Rescue Ranch remains committed to its mission. The horses in our herd, all rescues, continue to receive top-notch care. Our adoption process is rigorous to ensure that only individuals who can meet the high standards of horse care are approved. While some may be frustrated by being turned down, this reflects our commitment to the animals.

Zuma's provides the best care to all of the animals at the ranch. Each animal - horse or otherwise, large or small - receives individualized care depending on their needs. I started volunteering at Zuma's in July and been so impressed with the staff and volunteers who help care for the herd. It is clear that the animals come first, and we live in partnership with them. If you are looking for an opportunity to give back while also improving your own mental health through being around and caring for these amazing animals, Zuma's is the place for you.

First and foremost, as I read thru all the great reviews for Zumas I knew I was in a right fit, I saw one bad review that is truly out of left field and take it for what it's worth because that is not what I have experience at this slice of heaven. I started volunteering at Zuma's 4 mos. ago and I'm addicted to all the goodness this ranch has to offer. I started Volunteer at Reigning Grace Ranch in AZ last year and travel to Colo. for the summers and was looking for a like rescue ranch that I can give back and work with horses. Zuma's to me is heaven on earth. Each horse (and I me EACH of the 45+ horses) are given a specific diet with holistic herbs, Acupuncture, monthly dental, Ferrier and massage to help better their life span. Every horse is in a large paddock with 2-4 horses and have access to 2+ acres to roam each day outside their paddock. Zuma is also home to two amazing donkeys, 4 cute mini's, two goats with great personalities a sheep and not to leave out the resident cow Belle who will show you who's boss... I love coming to this place as it is the only place on earth that I have found, once you pass the gate to the ranch NOTHING and I mean NOTHING matters but what's in front of you and the love each and every horse has to offer. Those that volunteer here are the salt of the earth and are like minded so stress is the last thing on your mind. MOST importantly I have to give thanks to Jodi Messinch without her vision, utmost kindness and love for these horses this amazing place wouldn't exist. She is an outstanding leader, educator that will help enhance your horse skills. I promise you to come out here it will change your life for the better!!

Such a dichotomy at this non profit. Amazing animals on a beautiful property that you can enjoy as long as you are willing to ignore the actions of the founder/executive director. Actions that include discussing confidential staff management with volunteers, not responding to emails and texts, blaming others for things within her responsibilities (e.g, under weight horses / bad hay), 6 horse deaths in two years, making fun of volunteers for doting on the animals, the list could go on. For a place that advertises to be a place of healing for horses and humans, the ED caused such a hostile work place that most of the staff quit along with the board of directors. In the end of my days there, the ED was hostile to me as well.

You will do yourself good by volunteering and donating your money to one of the many wonderful rescues in Colorado. When you do, you will be surprised (or not so surprised) to find how many others have a similarly negative experience with the ED/founder at Zuma’s.

This is an angry person that is obviously associated with the former staff that were woefully underperforming their duties. On 6/21/2023 in an all hands staff meeting, the executive director asked the team to improve their performance or step aside and allow for new team members. Yes the entire team left after the staff meeting where the financials were presented, a 50% reduction in revenues. The horses were 100% under their care during 2022 -7/2023. Sadly their actions did cause some weight loss and as for colic, it happens under many circumstances. The leadership changed back to the founder and executive directors care 7/5/2023 and things have drastically improved, the herd, the facility and the general morale have returned to a healing and nurturing space for the herd, clients and volunteers . Sad for the formers that they can’t move on with their lives, they continue to try to cause damage to an organization that has selflessly provided a safe and peaceful place for all.

This message is from a former employee who was asked to leave along with the rest of the team due to poor performance. Unfortunately, during her and the team's time, six horses tragically passed away. While their deaths are indeed sad, it’s important to clarify that the responsibility for daily care fell to the staff, not the founder. The staff’s failures to provide proper care led to health risks for the horses, which is in part why they were ultimately asked to leave. Since their departure, it has been one of the best decisions for Zuma’s Rescue Ranch. It’s often said that family and business don’t mix, and we learned this lesson the hard way when we allowed a family member to take on leadership responsibilities. Before the family members' involvement, Zuma was thriving. Moving forward, we remain committed to ensuring the highest standards of care for the horses and upholding the mission of our organization.

The social media posts where the founder doesn't even know the horses names or proper grammer are disheartening. Calling your volunteers heifers on SM is just disgusting. Please do your research and look at all the facts present when supporting a non-profit. I would advise to spend your time and money elsewhere.

Please find another charity to support that actually supports its horses and people.

This organization has done a lot of good, but at the expense of a lot of people and animals along the way. Despite the messaging that the horses come first, that is not the case, evidenced by the poor quality hay being fed, the number of horses that have died (a few under very questionable and upsetting circumstances), the refusal to humanely euthanize suffering animals, and the executive director's attitude of "my way or the highway." I've never seen so much staff turnover, burned bridges or mistreatment of people in my life. To the executive director, every one is always replaceable and if you don't agree, you better not say anything or you might get kicked out.

Our daughter researched locations for involvement with Horses when, she discovered information on Zuma’s Rescue Ranch. She knew how much horses meant to me; from the stories I share of years past.
To say, I did not know what to expect when I visited Zuma’s is to say the least! When you observe the caring and love given to the animals, you will be blown away with emotion. Being around rescued animals will fill you heart to overflowing! Also, your soul will be filled in a way you can’t express in words! Zuma’s is a safe place to rejuvenate and remove the noise of the city. You are away from the daily tasks of your life. In helping others, whether 2-legged or 4-legged, you bring peace to your mind and soul. As you drive to Zuma’s, your blood pressure lowers, and anticipation of a positive experience come over you. If for some reason you are unable to go out as planned, you will plan your next visit as soon as possible. Another beautiful thing of Zuma’s, if you are not comfortable with horses, there are plenty of tasks which benefit the animals. Besides rescued horses, there are rescued: (3) goats, (1) sheep, (4) minis, (2) donkeys, (1) cow, (3) cats!
I encourage everyone that’s reads my story, PLEASE come and be a Volunteer! Whatever you give in time, you will be blessed triple!

My daughter searched the internet for a place with horses where I could go. Little did she know that search would fill a place in my heart which had been empty for years. An Orientation at Zumas Rescue Ranch, opened my eyes to a special place rescuing, rehabilitating and care which changed my life. There are so many tasks which need attention at a non-profit. It’s more than animals! You don’t need experience with horses in order to give of your time. The staff will train you to assist. With the stresses of work and the cell ringing, I have been able to take a cleansing breath! The sound of a horse nicker when they hear your voice even without seeing you , the grunt of a pot belly pig that wants your attention and horses see your car come to fence, a horse that has been starved and abused learn to trust you …. how do you put into words how the examples noted will feel your heart and soul! Did you know when you are around animals your heart rate meets theirs? I know whether I am near an animal or cleaning Boomers room, peace will surround me!!!! What little I have written is Zumas Rescue Ranch!!!

In 2017 I started volunteering at Zuma’s Rescue Ranch and have never looked back! If you are a horse/animal lover you should definitely check it out! The staff do a fantastic job keeping the horses, some darling cats and farm animals very well cared for and that IS NOT AN EASY TASK! They work very hard day in and out attending to the many details it takes to pull it all off!
There are also talented horse instructors that help to desensitize and train the horses so that the horses learn to trust again, gain new skills,
confidence and really start to “bloom”! It is a joy to watch!
Zuma’s even offers English riding lessons for all abilities and ages.
As a volunteer there are so many rewarding opportunities you can participate in, for all ages. I have really enjoyed helping the more untrusting horses come around and learn to connect with their human friends!
Zuma’s is also a place for healing humans. Their therapy programs have helped many children and adults alike.
Of course none of this would happen without the loving, unwavering commitment of the owners of Zuma’s-Paul and Jodi. They are just amazing!
If you can’t volunteer at this moment consider Zuma’s in your future!
AND REMEMBER DONATIONS ARE ALWAY WELCOMED! Running this rescue is an expensive endeavor but so worth it!❤️

I started volunteering at Zuma's in June of this year. I was looking for a non-profit org that was giving back by doing something very special and unique. And that is exactly what Zuma's does!! I can't say enough wonderful things about all the staff and volunteers - I'm so lucky to have found this group. Zuma's is special in what they have to offer as far as wellness, rehab, and sanctuary for horses. They are unique with all the different programs, classes and events they offer. It's therapy for the horses but also just as much for the humans. I found a community of kind, selfless and heart-felt people who would do anything for all the rescued horses and animals on the ranch. Zuma's is outstanding, hands down!

A wonderful place for animals and people. I brought my grandmother who suffered from Alzheimer's, to the point she didn't remember her daughter, my mother. After going to the festivities, we took her back to visit the horses. She spoke for the first time in nearly a year. She turned, looked at my mother and said "Horses! I love horses Billie! Remember the horses on the farm?". It was beautiful.

As an animal lover, it means so much to me how compassionate Zuma’s is towards rescuing and caring for their horses. I have witnessed first hand the amount of thought and effort behind everything they do to provide the best possible life for their herd. I am excited to continue learning through the knowledge and experience shared by the staff as well as the various education programs offered at the ranch. Being around horses has such a therapeutic effect that has been especially beneficial throughout the pandemic. I am grateful to have found a place to volunteer that aligns with my passions.

I am currently a volunteer at Zuma's Rescue Ranch and have been volunteering there for a while now. About 3 or so years ago I was going through some dark times when I found Zuma's website. The people and horses at Zuma's I feel, have played a huge role in helping me get through some really tough times in my life, where I never thought I would see the end. In short and honestly, Zuma's brought a light into my life and it changed me for the better. There are so many positive feelings I have for this place that are hard to explain. It truly fulfilles me to help the staff, other volunteers, horses and all the other animals there, and support the mission of Zuma's. Zuma's is and will always be a sanctuary for me where feelings of compassion, empathy, beauty, kindness, peace, patience, integrity, feeling of safety, belonging, etc... all come together in one incredible place. I feel so blessed and grateful to have found Zuma's many years ago and to be a part of this wonderful and beautiful place. Thank you Zuma's for everything you do for people and animals.

For the last five years Zuma’s has been my home away from home. My family started with riding lessons for my then 4 year old daughter and volunteering. We welcomed two beautiful souls into our family through Zuma’s. We’ve made countless friends that we now consider extended family. Zuma’s is a community of people with a common goal, to care for those who don’t have a voice. There so many opportunities to make an impact from simple tasks, to big projects, hands on chores or hands off chores. So anyone with any skill level can volunteer and make a difference. The staff are passionate about what they do and it shows, going above and beyond to care for their beloved herd. Zuma’s is truly a magical place full of love.

Jodi, Paul and all their staff are wonderful, kind, caring, friendly and compassionate people who pour their hearts and souls into this rescue. Every volunteer is appreciated for their small role in contributing to the herd. While my finances don’t allow me to own a horse, I am so thankful for the opportunity to love on one in particular that I wish was mine. Zuma’s feeds my soul, if you love horses, and want to get involved, you won’t find any place else that matches the quality care and value that is placed on each precious soul at Zuma’s.

After a year long stint in bed following surgery, I discovered Zuma's Rescue Ranch I began as part-time staff but an off site injury placed me in the honorable volunteer position.

It begins the moment you pass through the gates The air, light, everything shows you how and ways to make an impact, find unconditional love, learn, grow, and be.

The herd is ever changing with each animal finding the best nutrition, physical and mental care.

The tribe, all the pedis, embrace your spirit, give you focus, grant you a multitude of opportunities, and a sweet pass of forgiveness while you learn. This is Zuma's and if one has the good fortune to make them stronger, you will rise!

In a world of worthy endeavors animal welfare could easily fall behind. Animals need a voice. They need people to understand the experiences of being discarded. With no food, water, affection or hope. You shake from fear. You dart to the safest perceived place willing to disappear. Certain sounds and smells are alarms that remind of painful treatment or untreated wounds. You can't remember a time when it didn't hurt. These are some stories of the rescued herd of horses if given a voice. Now, fast forward to the fortuitous placement at Zuma's Rescue Ranch.

For the first time touches are soft and welcoming. Voices offer comfort, the food and water are in abundance, and the people who provide them seemingly want to know your story and then in boundless love, they work daily to help the past abuses become distant memories.

Zuma's Rescue Ranch is all that is described. Add that every animal, yes there are farm animals in addition to the horses. now holds a promise of lifetime care. No more abandonment or surrender. No more abuse. Life for every Zuma's creature is saved and protected. Professionals and lay folks, trainers, healers with kind hearts, all work in tandem to uphold the promise. The animals here are well.

Add volunteers; City people, folks with horse histories, animal lovers, or those that want exercise without a gym, some disillusioned, some seeking benevolent refuge, others seeking to give back. Zuma's team trains everyone who has an interest. Each becomes a contributor. Whether it is cleaning paddocks, feeding, sponsorship or philanthropy, the people become part of a solution.

The din of constant media fades, societal distractions halt, any negativity teeming at the surface subsides, and through the muck , sweat and tired achy muscles Zuma's rescues participants with sanctuary, education and purpose.

I began my Zuma's Rescue Ranch as Barn Staff. Enamored, I wanted to bring in financial support, media attention or pretty much anything that would shout loudly, "I found an unfettered place of goodness" to anyone who would listen. I recently shifted to volunteering and with the same gusto am eager to help.

Zuma's Rescue Ranch is deserving of accolades and positive attention. I am blessed to be part of something so much greater than myself.

In early 2014, Zumas spearheaded the rescue of several abandoned horses, many that lacked training. Zumas sent out a request for help in catching and loading the horses. I was an hour away from where the horses were being held and responded to the request for help. During the rescue and loading of the horses, I was impressed with Jodi's (Director of Zumas) determination to get all the horses loaded safely and transported safely. No corners were cut in safe handling. Compassion was of utmost importance. Soon after, I bought an emaciated horse from a Washington feedlot. I reached out to Zumas for guidance on an effective feeding program. My request was answered with experience and knowledge for an effective program that would put weight on the horse in a safe manner. In addition, Jodi often checked on the progress of the horse, again showing long term commitment to animal welfare. Last month, while viewing a FB page for feedlot in Texas, I saw a posting for an emaciated, Paint pony with an obvious shoulder injury. I, living in Wyoming, had tremendous difficulty in arranging the logistics of the rescue. I asked Zumas for help with organizing the Pony's rescue. Without fail, Jodi responded with help. Her former trainer lives in Texas and was willing to help. I called the lot and paid for the pony. Jodi then organized transportation and boarding with her former trainer. When the pony's injury proved more significant than antibiotics could resolve, the pony was transported to a surgical center. It was determined the pony had a fractured scapula and multiple abscesses in the shoulder. Once again, Zumas Rescue Ranch came to the rescue. Jodi spoke to the surgeon and helped me understand the 3 options and their risks, 1) euthanasia 2) drain the abscesses 3) surgery to remove broken bone fragments and abscesses. Zumas offered to help with surgical expenses to save the pony and give her the most promising future. Because of Zuma's commitment to animal welfare and advocacy, the pony is recovering from the surgery and will come home to Wyoming soon. I personally, now own two horses that benefited from Zumas' willingness to help animals and owners in distress. Zumas' talks the talk and walks the walk when it comes to animal rescue.

I originally signed up to support my 14 year old niece who has been living with me since July 2020. Her passion is horses since she was toddler. Unable to afford a horse we decided we would volunteer. Since then she has not only volunteered but has taken several courses and riding lessons, I believe has been extremely important to her emotional and mental wellbeing. She has been able to groom horses for events and work with the baby horses.

I also have taken multiple classes through Zuma Rescue Ranch including a mentoring program and counseling.

Finding this rescue has been the best thing that could have happened. Everyone is always in a positive mood, friendly and helpful.

I volunteer almost everyday with the herd and honesty it has been life changing. The physical ailments I had before starting at the ranch are completely gone which I attribute to mucking and tossing hay bags, as well as being surrounded by the herd on this beautiful property. Everything Zuma's does daily is for the good of these animals and the welfare of those that come for either a riding lesson, therapy or learning from the experience staff. The energy is amazing and I cannot see myself ever parting from this ranch. Hosted a Corporate Volunteer Event here and team had great time. Come check out the herd.

Education is invaluable and to mix that with actual activism as well as taking in and living to care for these horses is the highest caliber of compassionate genius and well balanced approach. Zuma's also is creative, kind and organic/natural in their approach to welcoming these traumatized horses. Zuma’s Rescue Ranch rests by itself on a range that softly abuts the Colorado Mountains. It sits under the sun - warm, quiet, peaceful. All around staff and volunteers tend to horses, kids, chores, structured instruction. But quietly, peacefully. Occasionally the wind will carry the nicker of one horse to another, the sound of laughter or voices talking. Otherwise it is just unadulterated serenity.
Zuma’s is a magical place. Magical? Why yes, most definitely. How else do you explain ordinary people doing most extraordinary things? How else do you explain bonds between beaten and broken horses melding with people to create lives of strength, endurance and love that alone neither one could have imagined? How horses bound for slaughter, or those barely surviving in conditions of horrific abuse or neglect, or simply abandoned and forgotten, can heal. Zuma’s helps these horses heal and they in turn help to heal human lives that have endured and experienced similar lives of abandonment, pain and suffering. But there is more than that. Zuma’s offers riding lessons for youngsters and adults, horsemanship classes, equine assisted therapy, special classes with renowned horseman and the list continues…there are musical gatherings and holiday festivities and Zuma’s horse shows, and still there is always something more…
More is the kindness, care, fortitude, compassion and commitment to excellence that staff demonstrate every day.
It is the smiles on the faces of volunteers that are giving of themselves, and getting their “horse fix.” It is a place of a new awakening. Come check it out.

Zuma’s is a great place to get your horse hugs, fresh air, exercise, meet new people and help the limited staff tremendously. It is such a peaceful and beautiful place to volunteer and know you are really helping as there are over 40 animals and only 3 staff personnel. I have been there almost 6 years and love that some days are just so special spending time with the horses and they too like the attention. I went out of my comfort zone and did orientation by myself for my 50th bday present( free LOL) and am forever grateful for my Zuma’s experiences. I sponsor Eve who arrived around the same time I started volunteering. She was unhandled and needed surgery. Over a few years the staff and volunteers worked with her and she now approaches people and likes attention. Just one success story among many.

I only recently began volunteering here, but they've been working hard the past year to really put themselves out there and showcase what they do for horses and how they use their rescue horses for therapy to help people in return. So it's people helping horses helping people -- a beautiful cycle. Plus, Zuma's partners with students of equine medicine to give more hands-on opportunities to study horses and learn how they behave.

This isn't a dog and pony show, puns absolutely intended. This is an organization that holds themselves to the highest of standards with cleanliness and safety at the forefront. Horses have easy to understand labels, so volunteers know which horses are safe to love on and which ones to give some space to. This keeps us safe and keeps the horses feeling like their space is respected and valued. Every volunteer at every shift takes their turn mucking, so you never feel like you have to watch your step.

Zuma's is focused on partnership across the board, and it shows from the way they train their volunteers to the gear they use on the horses themselves.

Zuma’s is a wonderful organization, not only do they rescue horses in need, but they offer community programs that let those same horses help rescue people in need as well.

A few years ago, within the span of a few short months, I experienced the trauma of being charged by an ill-trained horse, being thrown, my father dying, and then getting married shortly after. My heart was broken, I was scared of horses – whom I have loved since I was a child, I was devastated by the loss of my father, and all of that was mixed together. I was grieving, scared, and heartbroken because my love of horses had been a constant source of strength for years.

I spent the next few years doing equine assisted therapy because being terrified of approaching a horse was not acceptable to me. I worked on my grief and fear with a herd of horses along with a wonderful therapist. The honest reactions and connections they offered me were incredible. They gently and honestly guided me to face my fear, find strength, and be authentic with my own feelings. They gave me the chance to heal in my own time.

I started sponsoring a horse at Zuma’s because when I saw him, for some indefinable reason he took my breath away. It was like he looked right into my soul and said “Just give me a chance, I just need a little help”. I knew that feeling. And it is my honor to help give him that chance.

It is a horse rescue, haven for children, healing place for adolescents, training ground for young riders, and a supurb facility for outside professional's to teach natural horsemanship. I was in the the last category as I was a student of a visiting instructor, Anna Twinney of Reach Out To Horses. My training lasted 7 months last year and an additional 7 months this year. We were so very fortunate to have access to this wonderful facility with both indoor and outdoor areans and so many wonderful horses to work with. I am always super impressed by the condition of the horses at Zuma'a and by their training program and riding programs. Jodi is a super star with an awesome talent for running a hugely successful operation. Her vision is HUGE and she is well on her way to creating everything she has dreamed. It is a well organized and well funded program where volunteers, students, donors and employees are treated like family. There is a lot of Zuma Love being spread around this spectacular ranch and there are always many people buzzing about either taking care of the horses or taking lessons or going through a volunteer training. It is a "feel good" place for both horses and humans. I especially like the fact that the "rescue" horses at Zumas are all given a job once they are evaluated and brought up to speed with their needs. They not only get all of the nutrition and medical attention they need but they are placed in one of the programs at the ranch and are made to feel like an appriciated and respected individual who contributes to the good of the whole by being an intrical part of society and in particular Zuma's Rescue Ranch. Well done, Jodi and Paul and all of the staff, volunteers, animals and friends...keep up the good work!!

I was a student at a Horsemanship clinic taught by world renowned horse whisperer and trainer, Anna Twinney of Reach Out to Horses. We used the horses at Zuma's Rescue Ranch for many of the weekends of our training. Not only are the horses of superior quality, the care of them is exceptional, the people, Jodi and Paul and all of the volunteers and staff are awesome and the setting is breathtaking. Paul and Jodi do an amazing job not only rehabilitating and rehoming unwanted horses but also rehabilitating children and adults from the community by bringing them together with these equine beauty. When a horse shares it's heart with a human, the human is transformed...thank you Zuma's!

Jodi at Zuma's is caring, sincere and professional. The mission she has taken upon herself to tackle is one of compassion for animals and foster children. I've seen the positive results of her work with horses and children first hand. Jodi has brought together the important professionals to work with the horses and children enabling both to trust again. She has accepted responsibility for the care, training and overall well being of many types of animals: horses, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, dogs and cats. And each animal is given the opportunity to connect with a child to help both learn to trust again.

I came to know Zuma's Rescue Ranch when I embarked on a quest for horse manure for my garden. Zuma's was the only place which responded to my request with a simple, "We have lots." and their address. Since that time in 2009, I have come to understand the dedication, determination and professionalism of both Paul and Jodi Messinech. They give their whole selves to the cause of saving, reaching and teaching children and horses - one at a time - that there is someone who cares about them. I have seen Paul and Jodi work countless hours to keep a horse with colic comfortable. I have witnessed each of them putting their lives, honor, fortune and family on the line for the cause that they believe in - turning "throw away" kids and horses into partners and productive citizens.

I have been a part of the Zuma family for 3 years and I was the volunteer coordinator for a year. I have seen the kiddos that come to the ranch transform from a shy, sheltered sometimes reserved person to a outgoing kiddo. All because they were paired up with a four legged friend and taught how to take care of these rescued animals. They form relationships that take them into adulthood. The pair begin their healing process together. This is an amazing organization and deserves all rave reviews!!!

Zuma's Rescue Ranch is a sanctuary of hope and healing for horses and humans alike. Upon entering the 146 acre Ranch though the distinctive iron gates, guests are immediately impacted by the visual beauty of the place: gently rolling hills, white fencing, beautiful vistas and perhaps more important, a happy and healthy animal herd consisting of more than 40 horses, three goats, a gaggle of chickens and ducks and Daisy, the pot-belly pig. The secret behind the success of Zuma's is the dedicated staff and cadre of volunteers who care so much about creating an organization of excellence from the care of the animals to the compassion shown to the children and adults who come here seeking a deeper connection to themselves through equine assisted experiential learning. To keep the Ranch going, much is required: volunteers to provide invaluable support to the small but hard-working staff, donors to fund the hay that feeds the animals and medicine to keep them healthy, event participants to visit the Ranch and spread the word about its mission. At a very young age, I lost my father to an untimely death. My horse gave me comfort and an outlet to escape the emotional pain. I found Zuma's 40 years later because I want to support and honor a place that can do the same for others who have experienced personal heartbreak be it physical, emotional or spiritual.

My first contact with Jodi M. was through facebook. We were friends because we have a common interest, rescuing horses or any animals in distress. I remember when she first posted on my page. We were attempting to save a horse from one of the auction houses, and the horse was already in the kill pens. We were attempting to raise the bail, and transportation money. Before, I even knew that Jodi M. herself, had a rescue, Jodi M. steps up with the full bail money, knowing that the horse would not be coming to her rescue, because a home had already been found... I only found out later, that she had a rescue and plenty of other mouths to feed, and she was still willing to pay for the bail money, and was willing to help with the transportation fee's if they had been needed... My impression of this lady, is of pure respect, for her selflessness that she displayed, and a willingness to help others' out.. My hat is off to Jodi M. and her rescue, for what they have choosen to take on, with no financial gains to speak of. A genuine good hearted person.

I mentored students for three sessions at Zuma's. Additionally I took riding lessons and have my daughter in riding lessons at Zuma's. The fundamental principles of love and respect are everywhere at this magical place. This is a place where heartbroken, traumatized souls can find love and healing by making life-changing connections in a beautiful setting. The people who run this program have committed everything they have to a cause they believe in, and our world is so much better for it. Anyone can be a part of the Zuma's community- and everyone who does will come away transformed...

Zuma's advocates for those who need a voice in this world. This wonderful organization serves humans and horses, which allows it to make a difference in multiple ways. It has been my pleasure and honor to be a volunteer with the children and to adopt one of the rescue horses. I see how countless children, adults, and horses are healed at Zuma's everyday.

I was looking for a place to learn to ride horses when I stumbled upon a list of lesson places! I printed out the list and the only name that was there was Zuma's! I started riding and fell in love with the horses and so that summer I decided to become a working student! I made so many friends and developed a stronger love for horses. Every day i was so excited to work and couldnt wait until I arrived! After 2 years of being at zumas I still love it and never want to leave! It has been a life changing experience that has taught me fun can go along with responsiblity.

I have visited this wonderful sanctuary for people and horses, the love that is shown to both let's us all know that there are people who want this world to be a compassionate and respectful place to live. Thank you Zuma for the work that you do, and for helping the horses who have shown repeatedly that they are worth more than meat for a foreign dinner plate.

Zuma's is not only a representation of my family and my upbringing, but also a constant reminder to myself and to others to give back to those truly in need. To take your good fortune and share it with those less fortunate, both human and animal. No matter what occurs in my life, I know I can go to the ranch and be grounded, loved and supported by everyone there. I could not be more proud of my family for their truly selfless undertaking, and my gratitude to them for what their actions and the outcome that is Zuma's has given me. While I am not a learning child or a rescued animal, I truly feel the humanity and good nature I learn each day at Zuma's makes me a better person, a stronger business person and a more aware human being. No matter what your commitment to Zuma's is, I can guarantee you my family, our horses and these children will change your life.

When I first visited Zuma's I instantly wanted to be involved. I visited during the summer of 2008 and instantly fell in love with a little rescue horse that had been saved by Jodi and Paul from a feed lot just a month before. Since then, I have become a regular contributor to Zuma's and their cause. The balance between both rescuing helpless animals and children that have been abused or neglected is incredibly inspiring. I work in a very busy, fast paced environment and every visit to the ranch is nothing short of inspiring.

Zuma's is a beautiful place southwest of Denver where you are greeted with open arms, open hearts and a warm smile. A place that is safe for all people and horses to recover, rest and rejuvenate their spirits. Hard work is always needed and a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of these children and animals is appreciated. Volunteers don't always have the time, just the heart.

The Volunteers at Zuma's make such a huge difference in the possibilities around the ranch. Last weekend Paul the main man at Zuma's was away and Jodi his wife was left on her own to care for the 40 horses.... Well that was not the case as Mike Hoagland a dedicated volunteer showed up and boy was he helpful. There was no water, no of the hydrants would come on and it was not due to freezing. Mike stuck around and helped Jodi figure out the mystery, called a well and pump company, Tri-County Pump answered the phone on a Saturday morning and saved the day. 40 horses with no water is a big big problem. While it took hours to get the water situation fixed, more volunteers showed up and helped out; Lance Giddeon arrived simply to show his father the horses and jumped in and began hauling water from the property next door to all of the horses. Amanda Davis fed all of the horses, Stout Street Foundation's "Gary" and volunteer Amanda Zizza cleaned the pastures, and stalls. It was a hearty group of dedicated volunteers that kept things going this day at Zuma's.
