Mission: To serve women and children who are victims of domestic violence and substance abusers in need of residential treatment and of housing and support to become more self sufficient, productive members of the community.
Programs: Domestic violence servicesthe ywca north central indiana is the largest provider of domestic violence services in the area and provides both residential and non-residential services in st joseph county and elkhart county. At the ywca 24-hour women's safe shelters in st. Joseph county and elkhart county victims of domestic violence and their children receive case management, daily trauma specific psych educational/therapeutic groups, life skills classes, self sufficiency services including financial literacy classes and court advocacy. The ywca provides shelter for women and/or men and their children escaping abusive environments. With a capacity of 290 people at the two sites, the facilities are typically over capacity. However, no domestic violence victim is ever turned away.
long term residential - permanent housing services are provided to women with special needs who have development delays, chronic mental illness, and/or physical handicaps and who need minimal assistance in order to live independently. Transitional housing is a component of the ywca's brighter tomorrow's self sufficiency program. The ywca offers transitional housing for women to live at the ywca's st. Joseph county facility and receive case management services,financial literacy education, full self sufficiency services, free food and free childcare for up to two years.
the ywca north central indiana offers 1 of only 2 residential substance use treatment programs in the state of indiana that allows women to bring their children with them during treatment. This innovative women centered 16-step program lasts 6 to 8 weeks and is followed up by up to 12 months of after-care. The program is accredited by the commission for accreditation of rehabilitation facilities and is licensed by the indiana department of mental health and addictions.
the ywca's brighter tomorrows economic empowerment program is designed to provide information and education to women in the areas of financial literacy. Job reparedness and retention. Through the ywca's bridges out of poverty program, getting ahead classes are provided to help women move from generational poverty into the middle class through employment and education. The getting ahead classes are offered in english and spanish and have been successful in helping clients envision a new future for themselves and their children.
