Mission: Youth Yoga Nola is a sports-based youth development non-profit that shares the tools of meditation and yoga with youth involved with or impacted by the carceral system in the Greater New Orleans area. We recognize that New Orleans' youth face high rates of poverty, trauma, and violence all of which are associated with a greater likelihood of involvement with the carceral system. We nurture youths’ physical and mental health, resilience and self-esteem to cultivate young leaders and intervene in and disrupt the cycle of incarceration.
Results: We have worked with a number of partners to teach yoga and mindfulness to youth at the Travis Hill School at the Orleans Parish Juvenile Justice Center, as well as the Travis Hill School at Orleans Parish Prison, and work with students at the Welcoming Project where students are in the re-entry process. We provide free classes in our most vulnerable neighborhoods, so that youth can continue classes at home with their friends and families. We are members of the Laureus Sport for Good Coalition in New Orleans, and Propeller Accelerator alumni.
Target demographics: Youth involved in the juvenile justice system
Direct beneficiaries per year: 512 youth
Geographic areas served: New Orleans and the Greater New Orleans Area
Programs: yoga classes which offer the benefits of yoga and mindfulness through healing focused instruction. We offer free classes in our most trauma affected neighborhoods.
