Mission: Ymta is dedicated to serving the youth k-12 of washington state by opening pathways to maritime employment and building awareness of the maritime industry's contribution to pacific northwest communities; ymta provides every interested student with the information, inspiration and education required to venture into the real world.
Programs: In 2013 ymta was partnered with 9 schools and 2 community groups throughout puget sound region to support their programs which give students marine experiences. Through these partnerships they interacted with about 200-300 students in 2013. In addition, gary personally mentored about 7 maritime students of which all are pursuing a maritime career. In addition to working with youth programs, ymta continues to build a network of maritime programs, teachers, post-high school training programs, and industry representatives. They had served on many committees and boards seeking to develop maritime training opportunities. Almost all towboat companies operating in puget sound have at least one bma or ymta mentored student or ymta scholarship winner working in their fleet.
maritime educational scholarships the 2013 youth maritime training association maritime educational scholarships are available to students pursuing maritime training and education in community colleges, technical and vocational programs, colleges, universities, maritime academies or other educational institutions. They awarded 7 scholarships to 6 students totaling 13,000 to high school seniors planning to pursue a marine related career, and promoted marine careers at 20 high school career fairs. They also co- chaired the planning committee for the seattle maritime career day and staffed a booth and staffed a maritime career booth at 2 community fairs.
