Mission: The ywca greater triangle is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. The ywca is a women's membership movement that brings together diverse members of the community to decrease disparties related to health, education and economics. We provide vital programs and services including job training, academic enrichment, mentoring, financial literacy, health screenings, health education and fitness for people of all ages.
Programs: Ywca health and wellness programs address our community's critical concerns related to the health and wellness of vulnerable populations including youth, women and older adults. The ywca provides health education, screening, fitness and prevention services to combat health disparities in the areas of heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, lung cancer, stroke and verweight/obesity. Additionally, we partner with local health care providers to improve healthcare access for low-income and uninsured women. Last year, the ywca educated 12,000 women on women's health and local healthcare resources, provided 675 mammograms and 500 clinical breast exams, 161 cardiovascular screenings, hiv/aids for 1228 individuals, helped 132 older adults to continue to live independently and offered fitness and nutrition services to 1996 adults and youth.
ywca youth development programs served nearly 361 youth ages 5-17. Through after school and summer camps youth receive academic enrichment, mentoring, financial literacy, physical fitness and health education. Our programs build academic and social skills to help youth reach their full potential in school and in life.
ywca economic empowerment programs provide comprehensive financial literacy, counseling, job readiness, career development and case management services to unemployed and underemployed women. The ywca also partners with local colleges and trade associations to provide job training. Through our programs women gain the information, skills and confidence they need to become self-sufficient and reach their goals. Last year, 389 women received financial counseling and case management, 58 clients completed job readiness training, 154 clients were provided assistance with obtaining and/or maintaining affordable housing.
through dialogue, action and advocacy the ywca works to improve race relations and decrease racial disparities in education, income and health. During the program year, the ywca hosted study circles on race and ethnic relations at 12 area schools. A community-wide study circle and two community forums brought together diverse members of the community to examine the impact of racism on our community. Participants from 33 community and faith-based organizations engaged in dialogue and learned strategies to promote racial equality.
