Causes: Homeless & Housing
Mission: York street project (ysp) clearly recognizes and understands that a woman's life and family hangs in the balance if she has no home, no education, and no childcare - and that these issues cannot be viewed in isolation. Founded in 1989, ysp simultaneously provides housing, education, child care, counseling, and job & life-skills training to nearly 400 women and children each year that allows them to begin their journey out of poverty toward a life of self-sufficiency. The mission of the york street project (ysp) is to weave innovative programs that shelter, feed, educate and promote the healing and independence of persons in need, especially women and their children.
Programs: St. Joseph's home bridge housing and rapid re-housing program (sjh). The bridge housing is a structured emergency shelter that provides up to 12 months of care for homeless mothers with children as well as onsite supportive services for and referrals to family or individual therapy, crisis intervention, domestic violence and substance abuse counseling, health education, life-skills, parenting, household management, family budgeting, and career readiness programs. Upon completion of the program, we assist them in finding affordable housing options that are subsidized by a third party for the next step of their journey. For those clients coming to us who are in need of less-intensive services, we assist them in the rapid re-housing program to find affordable housing that is subsidized for two years so they can continue their journey toward independent living. Last year, st. Joseph's home served 71 families (100 children and 71 adults) in the bridge housing and 39 families (71 children and 44 adults) in the rrh program.
st. Mary's residence (smr) offers safe, affordable housing and support for working women with limited income, allowing them to concentrate on improving their job skills for a better future. On average they live with us for two years while they get on their feet. Last year, 34 women called st. Mary's home.
the nurturing place (tnp) provides year-round licensed early childhood development and education for children (2 months to 5 years) while their mothers are at work or school. This educational program helps to facilitate increased language development, cognitive thinking, emotional stability, and to improve socialization, interpersonal development, problem-solving abilities, and motor skills. Most importantly, it helps children to acquire a love of learning and the ability to give and receive affection - lessons that can last a lifetime. Last year, 106 children were educated and nutured at tnp.
kenmare high school (khs) is an accredited alternative high school that offers education and pracitical job & life-skills training for women aged 17+ who have dropped out of the public system. Recognizing that education and training are integral to obtaining meaningful employment, our strategy is to enroll clients in our alternative high school when a high school diploma is still needed, or to enroll in college or a job training program that will enable them to secure a sustainable job in the future. Our goal is to engage students in a truly alternative education - beyond desks, books, and lectures - which they can apply to their lives and that of their children while they earn a diploma. Last year 47 women took a second chance on their education, with 20 of them graduating with their high school diploma.
