Mission: York county literacy council empowers adults and families with functional literacy skills, in english, that enable them to participate productively in the home, workplace and community.
Programs: English as a second language program: the english as a second language esl program serves increasingly diverse members of the york community. The program offers classroom instruction in both york and hanover, with pre-literacy, beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. One-to-one tutoring is available as well. The focus of the esl program is to improve basic conversation skills and speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. A computerized digital learning center featuring literacy software geared to adult learning and workshops on financial, workplace, computer and health literacy are also offered. Approx. 591 participants were involved in this program during the fiscal year.
adult reading program: this program helps native-born, english-speaking adults to improve their reading, writing, spelling, and other basic literacy skills. Students are matched with a trained tutor for one-to-one or small group instruction or assigned to a skill-level appropriate literacy class for weekly instruction. A computerized digital learning center featuring literacy software geared to adult learning and workshops on financial, workplace, computer and health literacy are also offered. Approx 300 adults participated in this program during the fiscal year.
next step program: the next step program nsp assists yclc students with job readiness, continuing education, and life enriching goals. Next step program services include assistance with job search, resume building, soft skills, and interviewing. Nsp students receive updates on job fairs and employment opportunities. The next step program also assists with understanding the process of continuing education such as applying to college or universities, trade schools, or certificate programs, understanding financial aid, and researching scholarships to pay for their education. 74 participants were involved in this program during the fiscal year.
