Programs: Youth development - our ymca is committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen. We believe all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. We help young people cultivate their values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. Our ymca programs such as childcare, pre-school, youth sports, day camping and overnight camping offer a range of experiences that enrich cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. In fiscal year 2014-2015, the ymca of greater rochester provided subsidies and direct financial assistance of $1,470,530 that make participation possible for the young people we engage. We have also partnered with several entities, government and private companies alike, to support youth and families. We have given over one million meals to children who would otherwise go hungry over the weekend. We have hosted over 125 children of military families dealing with a loved one who has fallen or been injured in the line of duty or is active military at ymca camp gorham. We have lead the nation in advancing children involved in our summer learning-loss programs by up to six months by focusing on gains in reading proficiency. We have also partnered with a local non-profit organization to help children with autism learn water safety and swimming skills.
healthy living - the ymca is a leading voice on health and well-being. We bring families closer together, encourage good health and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, people in our community are receiving the support, guidance and resources they need to achieve a greater health in spirit, mind and body. This is particularly important as our nation struggles with an obesity crisis, families struggle with work/life balance and individuals search for personal fulfillment. Our programs are affordable and open to all faiths, backgrounds, abilities and income levels. In fiscal year 2014-2015, the ymca of greater rochester provided $1,728,967 in financial assistance to people who otherwise would have faced economic barriers to participation. We have also partnered with several entities, government and private companies alike, to support health and well-being programs for the entire family. We are one of only five ymcas in the nation to implement the ymca's healthy weight and your child program in which we tackle obesity issues with the child and their entire family. We have partnered with a local entity to build a special place for seniors to combat social-isolation, one of the leading factors of depression in the older adult population. Our senior center focuses on getting seniors active by hosting special classes in their very own workout area, holding social activities and encouraging friend making as a part of the program.
social responsibility - the ymca of greater rochester believes in giving back and supporting our neighbors. We have been listening and responding to our communities' most critical social needs. Ymca programs such as diabetes prevention, livestrong, child sex education, subsidized childcare, community blood pressure screening, healthy communities and family togetherness are examples of how we deliver education, training and support that empower our neighbors to effect change, bridge gaps and overcome obstacles. We engage ymca members, participants and volunteers in activities that strengthen our community and pave the way for future generations to thrive.
