Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: The yakima humane society is committed to ending animal suffering and cruelty, reducing animal overpopulation, and educating the public regarding responsible pet ownership while promoting community kindness and commitment to their welfare.

Programs: Animal control & rescue services: the yakima humane society has agreements in place with several jurisdictions in yakima county to provide animal control and/or animal housing services; our six full-time animal control officers carry a limited commission to enforce the animal welfare laws in these cities. The society has officers in the field seven days a week, handling a variety of animal welfare complaints. They are tasked with investigating reports of animal cruelty and neglect, rescuing pets that are in harm's way and educating the communities that we serve regarding responsible pet ownership and animal welfare laws. Our goal is to save lives and enhance the relationships between people and their pets, while ensuring that the pets in our community are protected from abuse or neglect.

animal care & adoption services: the yakima humane society is the only open-admission shelter serving yakima county (the second largest county in washington state) since 1904. The society welcomes all animals, regardless of health or temperament, and keeps them available for adoption providing medical care as needed. Every animal receives an initial health evaluation and preventative care, including vaccinations, flea & tick treatment and parasite preventative treatment upon arrival. The health and welfare of the animals in our care is our first priority, shelter pets diagnosed with an illness or injury are treated by local veterinarians. Spay or neuter surgery and a microchip implant are performed on every cat or dog prior to adoption. The yakima humane society neither euthanizes for lack of space nor places time restraints on the animals in our care. During 2016, through innovative practices and community support, we were able to save the lives of 4,117 pets - a 74. 61% save rate.
