I have been involved with this organization since 2015. As the son of a Veteran, I realize the struggles that families go through after transitioning to civilian life. The WWUA allows veterans to have a renewed sense of purpose, to put a uniform on again, and to stay connected with their communities through umpiring. Through peer-to-peer counseling, the WWUA connects students who have similar experiences for lifelong friendships and support. It truly saves lives. This is the only organization I donate my time and money to.
i heard about wounded warrior umpire academy through a another veteran mentor friend of mine Matthew Currin.. I always like baseball I never umpire before. i did the research on website and saw positive feedback. I said I should give it a try and apply to the academy. It was an amazing experience to meet the professional staff at academy and also meet professional umpires to volunteer there time for the warriors for the 10 days. In addition meeting other Alumni members who went through the program and give back to organization. I actually like the experience training ang giving commands on the field and doing umpire has improve my confident that I can challenge myself trying things I never did before. There were times I felt like quitting but the staff gave me the encouragement to keep pursing and assisting me with my drills. The WWUA is a great organization and I am proud to be a member of the family.
Went to this Academy 2 times. The difference it made in my life cannot be put into words. My wife noticed a huge difference in me as soon as I returned home. The Board members, Instructors and Volunteers treat you like family. They are there for you and they show it with their actions. I honestly cannot say enough about this organization and the difference it has made in my life. I continue to support this great organization through my monthly donation and will ask to be a volunteer at next years camp.
I’m not a wounded warrior but my best friend is. He has been in this program for almost 4 years. He got into umpiring just to give it a try, because one of his old Sergeant’s suggested it to him. He got into your program and loves it so much he is now helping out with it. He has grown so much since then that he has even umpired with the Savannah Bananas! I am so proud of him and tell him all the time,He is Umpire Santa!
In 2021 I was a lost individual. Retired from the military, 500+ lbs, heavy PTSD, without a purpose or a life mission. I found WWUA on a whim and the program and the people saved my life. I’ve lost almost 200lbs while umpiring, gained a purpose in my community and been able to gain enough confidence and recovery enough to go back to work helping veterans in hospice care. This organization SAVES LIVES just with their love and support. Umpiring is just a phenomenal extra.
I have volunteered for this organization since they began, ten years ago. This is an organization that is run completely by volunteers and 90% of them are veterans or family members of veterans. The program has grown from a way to train combat injured veterans to a program that uses the training as an excuse to get veterans together and enjoy a sport they love and have peer to peer support throughout. Once you are trained, you become part of a much larger family and always have someone you can call and reach out to. This is one of the best veterans organizations I have belonged to. It is amazing to see the lives that are touched each summer!
