I decided to use World Food Program USA to pay my fidyah this Ramadan rather than an Islamic-specific organization. Why? When I did some more research, a lot of them were going through programs like this. It made more sense to give my money straight to the source.
I'm proud to donate to World Food Program USA because they provide something essential that everyone needs, but many people don't have - food. This critical work is literally saving lives. And since they have a 4-star rating on Charity Navigator, it's reassuring that the funds will be used well.
As a volunteer for Friends of the WFP, I was priveledged enough to go to Nicaragua as a guest of the United Nations World Food Program, in July 2008. It was an amazing experience and even more amazing was how the WFP manage the logistics of feeding so many people so efficiently. We visited school feeding programs where the children get a hot meal every day at school. For many of these children, it is the only meal they each day. The WFP manage to feed these children with only 25c per meal. The WFP staff on the ground are from the region and know best what the needs of the people are. The operations are simple, effective and efficient! This is an organization that I completely respect and admire and happily trust that they will do the very best with all funds donated to them.
This non-profit organization is made up of only about 15 employees in Washington, DC. However, their efforts help mobilize people all across the United States to volunteer and provide support to the World Food Program. Friends of WFP is also one of the largest donors to the World Food Program, providing millions of dollars each year to go to programs in the field to help the hungry poor.
