Mission: Using the power of food to empower communities and strengthen economies.
Programs: Wck founder jos andrs and the world central kitchen team arrived in puerto rico in september 2017 just a few days after hurricane maria wiped out the entire power grid and decimated agriculture and infrastructure. Wck began receiving calls for aid from all over the island and began to expand operations all across the island, mobilizing a network of emergency kitchens, food trucks, and partner organizations to make sure that communities in need received quality meals. The chefsforpuertorico movement quickly grew to serve over 150,000 meals in a single day to communities all across the island, becoming the largest fresh meal operation following the hurricane. Chefsforpuertorico continues to remain active by empowering our chef and food truck partners through rebuilding grants and investing in agriculture, fishing, and culinary training.
empowerment and sustainability- this programs is a combination of the organization's prior legacy programs health, education and jobs. Health - 4 million people worldwide die each year from complications due to cooking with charcoal and wood. World central kitchen is reducing this number by converting school and home kitchens from charcoal to clean, gas- burning stoves while providing food safety and sanitation training to all cooks. Where gas is not available, we continue to implement new improved cook stoves. Education - education is the strongest way to advance the developing world, and a meal can often be the impetus for a child to go to school. World central kitchen supports education by providing clean school kitchens and supplementing healthy meals. With a focus on sustainability, we look to create community-led businesses that can generate revenue for schools and communities. Jobs - culinary training provides youth with culinary skills that increases their earnings potential and enhances their quality of life. This training has a broader impact on the developing world by strengthening the hospitality industry in that country - helping to advance their tourism and strengthen the nation's economy.
