As a volunteer, I am involved with providing literacy activities to at-risk children in various communities that have centers for displaced families and those of domestic violence. There is a great need and many benefits to provide interactive activities, such as reading aloud, singing songs, that promote literacy to babies and small children. Words on Wheels provide early literacy activities that promote brain development in those small children. Words on Wheels provide each child a book, musical instrument, puppet, toy, and a bottle of bubbles at the end of each visit.
As a board member, I see how well the all members and volunteers work to deliver the organization's mission to the communities and supporters. Each board use their talents and skills to make the organization seem like a family of caring individuals. I also see a future of growth into other communities such as Chicago, as we are collaborating with a university and its undergraduate students. The student volunteers will be working in the inner city to deliver Words on Wheels' mission, "Bringing the Words to Them".

Being a volunteer for Words on Wheels has been a rewarding experience. You are impacting children as young as an infant and as old as six-year old, by interacting with them. You are helping the children develop their literacy and language skills while reading, playing, and talking with them. After a couple of months, you will notice progress in the children's development. The smiles and the sounds of laughter from the children are the benefits from being part of the site visits.
