Mission: To preserve, restore, promote and respectfully interpret for all people, the wood lake battle site and the history involving the us/dakota war of 1862. The mission is also to share the history involving why and what happened at the site in 1862.
Programs: Always working with their mission in mind, the association has received grants and raised money through donations and $10 life-time memberships in order to achieve listing on the national historic register, a conservation easement on 54 acres of the battlefield, and a phase one archeological survey. Now, understanding more accurately the history of the site, the association is ready to focus on preparing for the public with better movement flow when visiting the site, restoration of prairie grass, and better understanding through story boards of the u. S. /dakota war and the decisive battle fought at the wood lake battle site.
the association continues to work on plans for walking paths, signage, and nursing the prairie grass. The association encourages public interest with better communication through its website and social media. The association is preparing for distribution of a quarterly newsletter for its members. Public meetings are held in april and september.
the archeological study of the battlefield that began in 2015 concluded in 2017. In 2015, the association hired a consulting firm to perform a ground penetration on 33 acres of the battlefield. Over the years, the firm verified the location of the bridge and offerred a new interpretation of how the battle unfolded. Other grant activities include training and ground maintenance to prepare for the ground penetration.
