Mission: To educate the public in the principles and practices of humane treatment of animals, to investigate and resolve animal cruelty and abuse reports, to assist pet owners with spay/neuter opportunities, to provide a clean and healthy shelter environment for animals who have no other home.
Programs: Provide general medical services, vaccinations, food and shelter for all animals. Provide veterinary services, as needed, for sick animals. 429 animals were adopted at the shelter, and 9 through a program with the wood county dog shelter. 16 were claimed, 24 were euthanized, 31 died, and 7 were transferred out. Total incoming for the year was 525, with 249 being stray cats, 112 were owner surrenders, 36 from cruelty cases, 8 from the county dog shelter, 30 from abandonment, and 90 from other sources. . Maintenance work on the shelter included new windows and doors, new outside covers on kennels, additional bonding space for animals and prospective adopters, resurfacing of parking lot.
1. Cruelty cases investigated involved an assortment of domestic and farm animals. Consulted/worked with 8 local law enforcement agencies to bring closure to most cases. 230 cases were investigated and closed; there were 391 re-checks; 33 cases showed reason for concern; 14 resulted in pressing charges, with 21 cases still pending. In 5 cases, owners surrendered animals and 24 cases were referred to other agencies. . 2. The public is educated about proper animal care. Direct home visits, as a response to complaint calls, resulted in 61 cruelty reports being closed. Other educational events included a shelter tour for girl scouts; local radio spots; a presentation at the local technical/career high school; participation in activities such as earth camp, wood county kids health & safety fair, wbgu kids extravaganza and humane halloween. . 3. A newsletter also disseminates information regarding society activities and tips on animal care.
