I am an alumni of Unique Place I was one of the First Ladies that went to the unique place when it was on tipper st I think it was 611 tupperst. A wonderful facilitator named Meige Hopkins opened it she leased it went to judges to get girls out of jail. We never wanted for nothing she had a girls fund for cigs ect she had to of taken out of her own pocket for us. Clothes got donated next to a cabin was like a storage we fixed it up sorted clothes and called it the unique boutique we made things to sell for our needs. I stayed a year stayed sober 2 I even went to work at mountain vista farms w/miss Hopkins help. But sadly I got complacent n relapsed aft 2 yrs I quit meetings n going to our alumni after care meeting every Thursday night. I went back a2nd time same thing n cont off n on for 15 more years but the things I learned & seeds were planted stayed in my heart. Today I am proud to say I'm 15 years sober im a certified substance abuse councelor. I have all I learned from that wise beautiful lady she planted so many seeds that just took a little longer to grow for me. Cause I didn't follow directions. My mother donated to you until the day she died 1998. I have God & the unique place to thank for what I have in honor of meige Hopkins who gave up working @ a blush rehab in Palo Alto who turned in insured woman away n on a gut feeling ended up in Santa Rosa and started your program. Below is only pic I could find it was her retirement party I was 32 @ time second pic is me today. I was 265 lbs when I went to Unique Place w/the help & encouragement of Meige and our cook Doris I lost 120. Still. Ever got heavy again. I love all you and owe you so much. May all the board of directors, Meige and all who has passed on Rest In Peace Thank you

This program is very specialized in providing the most up to date recovery programming to this most vulnerable population of women whose addiction has compromised their ability to put parenting first.
Children love the structure they receive in the on-site Children's Program with staff caring for them while their mothers are in classes learning the root cause of their addiction.

After completion of the 120 day residential portion women move to a lower level of treatment in the weekly AfterCare. At the end of one year women are the center of a celebration where they receive flowers. a certificate and a silver butterfly necklace.

Sadly, this treatment facility uses shame, humiliation, and confrontation against highly vulnerable women just beginning to detox from drugs and alcohol. Most of the clients are poor, and come from extremely abusive backgrounds. The Clinical director is contemptuous of the clients, and discourages empathy and friendship among the women - the two qualities that could transform their lives. Staff are well-meaning but grossly under-trained. Their is virtually no awareness of trauma-informed principles, and many of the clients are re-traumatized by the policies and practices of WRS. The best thing I can say about WRS is that it is less punitive than prison. But the clients - and their children - deserve and need the compassion and healing that could help them on the road to healing.
