Mission: The Women?s Foundation of California invests in women and girls to build a more just and equitable society for all. We envision a California that is the healthiest, safest and most economically prosperous place. We achieve this vision by focusing on women and girls as change agents because of their central role in families and communities. We advocate for the right to live and work in healthy environments (with clean air, land and water), the ability to access and afford toxin-free products and food and comprehensive, universal health care. We promote an agenda for women?s economic prosperity and for women?s freedom from all forms of violence in their homes, schools, workplaces and communities. We invest in women?s development as leaders of systemic change. The Foundation simultaneously invests in the strategies of grantmaking, strengthening organizations, policy advocacy and movement building. In addition to our strategies, we will bring together donors, activists, business and community leaders and government officials to create a larger vision for California in 2020 and to set a new standard for creating systemic change. Since 1979, the Foundation has awarded more than $22 million in grants and capacity building assistance to over 1,200 community-based organizations across California.
Programs: Philanthropy - wfc's giving circles are composed of local philanthropists who know their communities, understand where their investments can make the most impact and create true partnerships with grantees. Through our hands-on approach to philanthropy, wfc provides access to a community of donors and opportunities for education and training, along with financial management and grantmaking support. Since 2000, wfc's giving circles have collectively awarded $12. 5 million to more than 500 local nonprofit organizations. Giving circle activities are complemented by additional grants that wfc awards to women's rights organizations throughout the state. Together, these funding streams represent a powerful investment in the programs and people who strengthen the economic well-being of women and their families. As an additional philanthropic resource, wfc offers fiscal sponsorship and strategic guidance to nascent, women-led efforts that help innovative projects establish infrastructure and build the capacity to become self-sustaining organizations. Unlike private foundations that can sustain their philanthropy from large endowments, wfc is a community foundation that relies on the ongoing generosity of individuals and institutions. Wfc is proud to partner with donors and foundations to carry out our mission and create a strong, collaborative network of philanthropy.
public policy - our women's policy institute (wpi) amplifies the voices of california women through a year-long training program in state and county public policymaking. Fellows of diverse backgrounds and experiences are paired with a mentor and work in teams to implement important legislative projects. To date, wpi has trained 320 advocates and local leaders and helped pass 24 new statewide laws improving californians' health, safety and economic well-being. Our training efforts go beyond the strengthening individual leaders or organizations; wfc also serves as a trusted ally and strategic connector across the state, helping to build coalitions and create a comprehensive women's policy agenda.
