Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Civil Rights, Environment, International, International Human Rights, Women, Womens Rights

Mission: WEDO envisions a just world that promotes and protects human rights, gender equality and the integrity of the environment. To contribute toward its vision for the world, WEDO’s mission is to ensure that women’s rights; social, economic and environmental justice; and sustainable development principles-as well as the linkages between them-are at the heart of global and national policies, programs and practices.

Results: WEDO has a strong track-record of strategic advocacy at UN and related negotiations, catalyzing support around critical issues that impact upon women's rights, and mobilizing women as agents for change. Recently, we helped to integrate the first-ever gender equality language in climate change policies; we mobilized support to found the new UN agency, UN Women; we supported women from least developed countries to be part of international decision-making on sustainable development issues; and we trained women, women's organizations and national governments (e.g. in Haiti, Ghana, Uganda, Cameroon, China, Viet Nam, and more) on issues of gender equality and sustainable development. (See a program example at http://wedo.org/what-we-do/our-programs/)

Target demographics: Women claim their rights as decision-makers, advocates and leaders, especially on issues related to environment and sustainable development

Geographic areas served: Globally and across all regions of the world

Programs: WEDO's programs focus on: 1. Advocacy and Influence: Engaging in policy processes to ensure policy and actions reflect women’s human rights and sustainable development 2. Capacity Building and Training: Building capacity and facilitating space for women’s political voice, power and influence, at local, national and international levels 3. Knowledge Production and Outreach : Building and maintaining a knowledge base related to gender equality, women’s rights, sustainable development and environmental issues, ensuring targeted and effective outreach and information sharing. Across issues such as: climate change policy, climate finance, sustainable development goals, a just transition to low carbon societies, peace & conflict, resilience and livelihoods, and sustainable cities & transport.

Wonder what is unique about WEDO? It is committed to women's human rights and the integrity of the environment, has one of the largest outreach networks among governments and grass-roots groups in the world, and fights like mad for environmental justice. Supporting WEDO makes a contribution to the UN process and gets action going on the ground. From the inside --as a board member--I can vouch for the efficient use of funds, integrity of the staff, and dedication of all volunteers. As an outsider looking in, I see an organization that is spectacularly well-respected with a stellar reputation.

WEDO plays a unique role in influencing global, regional and national policies and processes. In addition, WEDO is an implementing partner of several UN agencies and governments.
Walking the talk about (young) women leadership, the staff is a dynamic team of extremely skilled women working with passion, making it energizing to work with them.

WEDO is a unique organization that works on sustainable development, gender equality and climate change. Our organization has advanced significant processes before the UN and national and local governments in different world regions. We must keep up our good work together with other partners from different social sectors. We welcome your contributions and participation at WEDO.

The organization made a restart with a fresh approach and new directions under very difficult circumstances. It is amazing what it has been able to achieve with just a small staff and a dedicated diversified Board in a period of financial distress for all Non-Profits. Under management of a new Director since 2010, it is steadily progressing and making significant contributions in the area of women's rights, empowerment and leadership related to climate change, environment and development.
