Nonprofit Overview

Mission: The women's economic agenda project ("weap") demands economic human rights for poor women and their families. Weap envisions a world in which all women and their families have the skills, healthcare, shelter, and nourishment they need to enjoy happy, healthy, and productive lives. Weap implements this vision by building the leadership of low-income women through education, training, and advocacy. Weap recognizes that the policies that affect the poorest of our sisters affect all people. Weap works to change societal and governmental policies that relegate women to the bottom ofthe economic pyramid by raising the role and visibility of poor and working people in crafting real solutions to the economic and social injustices of our time.

I am an Outreach Minister with CHAM Deliverance Ministry in San Jose, CA. Our ministry is a homeless ministry that has served the poor in downtown San Jose for 20 years, including 12 years operating a family homeless shelter in collaboration with First Christian Church. Since 2000 we have worked together with WEAP to publicly raise issues of poverty, homelessness, and health care with public officials in the Bay Area and at the State Capitol in Sacramento. We have teamed up on numerous marches, testimonies, trainings, educationals, truth commissions, and rallies. WEAP is in the forefront of advocating for the human rights of all poor and working people, both employed and unemployed. They have tirelessly supported the homeless served by our ministry as well as poor people around the Bay Area and the State.

Women's Economic Agenda Project in Oakland Calidornia has provided leadership and support to low income women through trainings, support groups, and political education. The level of services is of the highest quality and inspires and instills the determination and strength to keep organizing and keep active in the campaign for just and universal health care, and other economic human rights -- education, housing, jobs. Consistent and ever present, their demonstrations, teach ins, forums, and, as well, skill based computer training has benefited literally thousands of women.

WEAP is doing amazing on the ground work for social justice issues with economic and helathcare reform. I volunteered at the Poverty Symposium at UC Berkeley and was able to pass out flyers about the organization. Ethel Long Scott, the director spoke at the symposium and has lots of knowledge in the topics.
