Involved since 2009 when my mother was diagnosed stage 4 breast cancer. A coworker told me about this wonderful organization "Women Supporting Women". So my mother and I went to find out what kind of organization this was. My mother was very private and did not want to share her cancer story that was until she met the ladies volunteering at the local Women Supporting Women office. She received her pink bag with wonderful information along with a piglet pillow that I hold onto closely since her battle ended just a short time past being diagnosed. My mother also went to try on wigs at Women Supporting Women office and found the most awesome wig that she felt comfortable enough to go out in public again. A moment in time etched in my memories that Christmas day when she asked me to shave her head. Thank you to this organization was not enough so I got involved and I remain involved volunteer, board member and many many other ways. All funds raised and donated stay local on the Eastern Shore of Maryland for the 3 counties Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset and now reaching into neighboring counties. So please take a minute to look into this amazing organization that I hold closely to my heart. You will be amazed at what they do LOCALLY........
Review from Guidestar
In 1984 I was 38 years old, had heard little about breast cancer, and was diagnosed in December. Fortunately, there was no node involvement, so I had no chemotherapy or radiation. My family (husband, 2 sons, mom, dad, sister, brothers, cousins and a great many friends from my job) was a wonderful support system during my recovery. However, I would have welcomed a support group also at that time. Women who had been where I was would have been a great help. My mom had breast cancer about 10 years or so after I did. She too could have used a support group along with family and friends. We attended the very first meeting of Women Supporting Women and have been to almost every meeting since.
At this time I am a volunteer for WSW, helping in the office one day a week, baking items for fund raising events, and still attending most of the monthly meetings. Mom and I hope our long survivorship is an encouragement to newly diagnosed ladies.
Women Supporting Women is a grass roots organization. 100% of the donations stay right here on the shore. They supply wigs, lift chairs, and more as well as support for breast cancer patients, survivors and their family members - all at no charge!! What a wonderful, kind and caring bunch of people they are. I wish they were around when my mother in law dealt with breast cancer back in 1977.
I am a survivor and became acquainted with WSW in 1999 after a mastectomy, radiation and chemotherapy. I attended lots of support group meetings and received information, care and support for myself and my family. I volunteered for events and worked closely with staff at WSW. I later joined the Board of Directors and continued to work for awareness in our area. WSW serves most of the Eastern shore with information, support and many free services. We have wigs, prosthesis, "bags and piglets", lift chairs and support groups. WSW depends on local donations, grants and fund raising events for funding. We are not affiliated nor do we receive funding from American Cancer Society or Susan G Komen, most of their money goes to research. We have two offices with paid staff and 4 support group meetings monthly. Our finances are a matter of public record and anyone is welcome to take a look at them, just stop by the office. If you or someone you know needs our help please give us a call or come by the office to see what we do and what we have to offer. Our wigs are offered to anyone needing one, no matter what their medical problem is. We have a new Executive Director and she would love to meet you, our past director is on premises several days a week working with and mentoring survivors. Please stop by anytime and say hello.
In response to the previous comment regarding misappropriation of funds, PKS & Company, PA have been performing annual audits of Women Supporting Women for at least the last six years. In all the years that we audited, the organization had a clean or unqualified opinion. We noted no instances of misappropriation during our audits.
Women Supporting Women is a grass roots organization that is dedicated to helping local women grapple with breast cancer. I first became aware of Women Supporting Women after I moved to the Delmarva Peninsula. As a breast cancer survivor, I was searching for a group of women who knew what I had experienced and who would support me in my recovery journey. Women Supporting Women was that organization.
They offer support in so many ways. They listen, they instruct, they champion, they offer real solutions to problems and they are there to offer comfort when you need it. From the Director down, they are dedicated to their mission. These are real people who have had experience and training to help you.
This organization has prosthetic devices and bras in almost every size for you. They offer wigs and head wraps. They have pillows to support your arm after surgery. They have informational materials that cover almost every problem you might encounter. All this for free.
Although I hope you never need their help, I highly recommend Women Supporting Women!
This organization provides invaluable service to the women on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It is a nonprofit whose mission and outreach allow for women diagnosed with breast cancer, their caretakers and families to be serviced wholistically from diagnosis stage, through treatment and rrecovery. Unlike many national organizations dealing with cancer patients, WSW is local. They know the community and the resources available. Your family has a name, and not just on a mailing label.
As a female who lives and works in Salisbury, and whose mother died from breast cancer many years ago, I became aware of this organization in 2013, have participated in various events they sponsor and have visited their Salisbury headquarters. I continue to be impressed with the warmth of the staff, the education and counseling they offer, and the items they provide for free i.e. wigs, bras, reclining chairs, quilts, to name a few. I only wished Women Supporting Wormen was around when my mother needed it. It is a one-stop shop for those families who are confronted with a scary diagnosis and need the support and grounded practical help Women Supporting Women can provide.
Women Supporting Women has been a nonprofit organization in EXCELLENT standing since 1993. There has never been an investigation of any sort and an outside audit is performed each year. The comments of the last reviewer are inappropriate, not factual, and are even slanderous. The past Executive Director, one of the founding members, was NOT removed from her position. Her decision was to make a lateral move to concentrate on mentoring breast cancer survivors. She has the full support of the Board of Directors and Staff.
Women Supporting Women's mission is to provide awareness, education and support to all those who are affected by breast cancer on Delmarva.
