I have collaborated with WISE & Healthy Aging in their efforts to serve the senior community for many years. The ingenuity and effectiveness of their programs truly put this organization in a league of their own. In interactions with the staff at WISE & Healthy Aging I am often struck by the sincerity and dedication with which they carry out their incredible work. This is not just a job for this team, they are undoubtedly passionate about what they do.
WISE & Healthy Aging rocks! I love this dedicated nonprofit organization. They helped provide quality care during my father's final years. From their Adult Day Center to Care Giver Support they offer so many wonderful services to assist seniors living in Santa Monica and Los Angeles. Their helpful programs are invaluable and the staff members are all kind, caring and understanding individuals.
I’ve also had the pleasure of traveling with this amazing group of people to Italy 11 years ago.
A trip I’ll cherish forever!
I can’t say enough good about WISE & Healthy Aging. They’re just the very best at what they do!
WISE and Healthy Aging is a wonderful organization for seniors. They helped me through the most challenging years of my life after my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. They assisted me with valuable programs and services for individuals living with memory loss that made a profound difference in the quality of my father’s life. When other agencies I contacted fell short or lacked follow through, WISE was always there for us offering empathy and kindness as my father’s illness progressed.
WISE will always have my support not only because of the assistance my dad received from them but also for their ongoing commitment to provide and expand the many needed services for our senior citizen community.
For more than 17 years, I’ve watched WISE & Healthy Aging grow to provide more vital services to more people in more locations. Nothing is more important than protecting the comfort, vitality and safety of older adults and other vulnerable populations, and no one could take this responsibility more seriously or with greater care than the professionals, staff and volunteers at WISE & Healthy Aging. Many of the core programs and services were in place before I became involved with WISE & Health Aging. Others have been more recent additions, created to meet specific needs or provide services in a new location. But in every instance, whether providing meals and companionship, managing care for seniors to age in place, advocating for residents in long-term care facilities, working to prevent elder abuse – or any of the many other services provided by WISE & Health Aging – dignity and respect are the common denominators.
When COVID-19 brought much of the world to a halt, hunger, isolation and abuse didn’t go away; they intensified. And WISE & Health Aging responded, identifying and adopting innovative ways to continue meeting the needs of older adults safely and efficiently – with meals delivered rather than shared, and consultations, trainings and classes taking place remotely until in-person visits could resume.
I’ve had the privilege to play a small role with the WISE & Healthy Aging Communications Team, and one of my favorite projects was a fundraiser recognizing local businesses and individuals who were proactively addressing needs and concerns of the homeless and unsheltered living on Los Angeles' Westside. It’s all very important work, and WISE & Healthy Aging, in conjunction with its community partners, does it exceptionally well.
WISE & Healthy Aging offer such incredible programs for older adults. They truly enhance the quality of life for our seniors.
My husband has dementia and I see his quality of life enhanced by participating in the Adult Day Services. He especially likes the in person socialization. Staff are always welcoming and treat him with respect. My husband has very limited short term memory, but he knows when it’s the day he goes to day care!
Not only am I provided respite when my husband attends Day Care, but I have benefited from educational programs, book club discussions, and physical fitness classes through Club Wise.
During the Pandemic, WISE & Healthy Aging came to the rescue of the members of it’s Club WISE program for older active adults by mounting a full Zoom program. It seem like within a few weeks of getting the stay at home orders Club WISE was teaching it’s elderly membership how to use devices to get on-line, and putting together a rich variety of classes and programs. During this time of isolation, WISE & Healthy Aging keep members connected, exercising, and learning. More than once I heard members say, “participating in Club WISE has saved you life”.
WISE & Healthy Aging's Club 1527 provides older adults a place to discover a variety of social, intellectual, and physical programs to stay active and healthy.
Having collaborated with WISE & Healthy Aging for almost 10 years now, providing acupuncture and other traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) services to WISE & Healthy Aging members, caregivers and their families, I have utmost respect for the mission and vision of WISE & Healthy Aging, and the work the WISE & Healthy Aging team is doing for the well-being of older adults in our community. An invaluable service and resource for our local community most definitely!
WISE & Healthy Aging is a well-run, multi-faceted, non-profit that has been an important resource for individuals living in Santa Monica and the surrounding areas. They treat their clients with such great respect while providing a wide array of services to the community. The staff at WISE & Healthy Aging are professional, dedicated and committed to serving older adults and their families. Since they are such a well-run organization ...they are frequently sought out to apply for grants on the local, state and national level. Their ability to write successful proposals has brought many new programs into the organization which expands their programs and services for the community.
WISE & Healthy Aging was one of several non-profits awarded an ACL (Administration on Community Living) grant to provide a number of services to family caregivers. I was hired initially to do intensive case management, and later to facilitate One-on-One Caregiver Consultations. I found both of these roles to be extremely rewarding, and based on feedback these efforts were also very helpful to our clients. WISE continues to be a community leader in the field of caregiver support, dementia education and adult day services; it was my privilege to be part of this wonderful team.
I am proud to be a member of the WISE & Healthy Aging Board. This community-based, social services organization provides exceptional programming and services to the older adults and caregivers in our community!

I have worked with personnel from WISE & Healthy Aging's elder abuse prevention for over 10 years. During that time, I have been enormously impressed not just by the quality of the services they provide but also by the leadership they provide in the field of elder abuse prevention and aging services. WISE & Healthy Aging has forged dynamic partnerships and pioneered innovations like the Holistic Elder Abuse Response Team (HEART) program. They draw from their experiences in serving individuals to identify service needs and design new, leading edge programs. Molly Davis, Vice President of Elder Abuse Prevention and Ombudsman Services, is known across the state and beyond as an expert on a wide range of topics and as a highly respected leader. As I neared retirement i began looking for a place to play bridge and found Ken Edwards Center. As they say, the rest is history. I've been part of the organization for over 5 years now and am so happy that i found them. Early on I began volunteering as a Pilates teacher and now teach the card game of bridge as well. The relationships I've made through all of this are priceless. The social interaction is great for my soul and the teaching keeps me challenged. I would be devastated if this organization were to go away due to lack of funding.
I have been involved with WISE & Healthy Aging for over eight years - both as a participant and as a volunteer. Whether I am there to take a class or help out at an event, I am always impressed with the enthusiasm of the seniors who are there to learn and to grow. To give you an idea of the variety of classes that are offered: I have taken yoga, writing children's books and Hip Hop dance! I've taught a class on European Art History and have danced down Main Street with our group of seniors at all the Fourth of July Parades. I even traveled in Ireland with one of their group tours. When I owned a boutique in Santa Monica, I co-produced two fashion shows - one was a fundraiser - in which the models were our senior women, who strutted down the runway to cheers and admiration by all who attended. I've made new friends here, including one man who told me that this place is his second home and a life-line for him. It's clear to me that what is being offered and demonstrated everyday in the WISE & Healthy Aging community is a philosophy and a spirit that conveys: becoming older is a time to thrive - a time for growth, adventure and friends!
The Center is an invaluable resource for older adults in Santa Monica and environs. I am a member of Club 1527 and occasionally volunteer there. Members enjoy a wide variety of exercise classes, language classes, craft activities, outings, Ted Talks and all manner of classes and discussions that promote intellectual growth and community spirit. There are also ongoing card games, get-togethers and holiday parties to engender social connection. I will just mention the other services offered by the other departments of WISE - such as caregiver training and medicare consulting. This is a one-stop spot for all the services an older adult would want!
Each time I come to the Wise and Healthy Aging senior Center in Santa Monica I feel welcomed.
Greeted by warm smiles from so many people and a feeling of belonging makes it a wonderful place to be.
The exercise classes are amazing because the teachers are amazing. This is just one reason I am so happy to come to the senior center often.
It feels great to be welcomed and supported by so many others, including teachers and the staff and the other seniors coming to the classes too. I have heard others ( both classmates and teachers).
Speakers are invited to the center often. Today, we were welcomed to join a ZOOM lesson. Two outstanding speakers taught me a lot. We seniors need to watch out for scammers. Scammers learn how to deal with vulnerable people (older people especially).
So glad to have learned so much today to protect myself.
Not long ago we had another speaker guide us some ways to defend ourselves if there was some danger. (.No, we did not have to learn to use physical force).
WISE & Healthy Aging has a long history of providing person-centered complaint resolution services for residents of long-term care facilities and elder abuse prevention activities. I frequently turn to them as leaders within our Ombudsman community. Their diligence, innovation, and responsiveness is an inspiration and model for local Ombudsman entities through out the state.
Wise and Healthy Aging has been my life line during this epidemic. Three days a week, Candace Shivers leads Start Your Day on Zoom. We meet as a group to learn and practice coping skills. we applaud and comfort each other. We share information. This is the only human contact many of us will have. Five days a week, a selection of exercise classes are offered on line. This includes Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi,etc. all of the classes are well thought out, effective yet gentle. I feel so fortunate to have Wise and Healthy Aging in my community. So many of us rely on this organization to help us navigate this period of our lives.
The quality of me life greatly improved when I joined Wise and healthy aging. I was, still am through zoom, interacting with like minded people who care about taking care of their bodies in a positive way and using their minds to learn and reflect. I am 82, I was taking 3 exercise classes a week, now zooming 5 classes because I feel exercise helps to create a strong immunity system. I have also realized, through zoom, that I have the capability to strengthen my body in new ways. I also attended a singing group and many lectures. The book discussion group I was in a few weeks ago had the best leader I have ever been with. I am so grateful to have Wise and Heathy Aging as an essential part of my life and grateful to all the sources that make this organization possible. Sincerely Anne Geffner
I participate in several programs that are being offered on a daily basis: Inspiration to Start Your Day, Exercise classes, Yoga classes, and Pilates Classes. Also offered are educational classes such as being watchful for Scams, especially for seniors, Aging Successfully and many others. Taking these classes is now a daily routine. I think there is no better way to start one’s day!
Wise & Healthy Aging provides an enormous service to Santa Monica residents and residents in the surrounding Los Angeles area. It gives people an opportunity to stay healthy, informed, educated, to meet people and participate with them, to make new friends. Aging is part of life and Wise & Healthy Aging certainly lives up to its name. Members can learn new ways of aging and staying healthy and most importantly, active with others. Wise & Healthy Aging is a gift that serves thousands of people yearly and hundreds of people on a daily basis. It has made a huge difference in my life, and I am ever grateful!
Ensuring our older adults have access to needed resources and someone to advocate for them is vital! WISE & Healthy Aging has a demonstrated history of meeting the needs of seniors in our community and supporting them with programming and services that is thoughtful, respectful, caring and above all provides them with needed dignity and respect. As we face uncertain times, today more than ever, the role that WISE & Healthy Aging plays is critical to help ensure our seniors remain physically and emotionally healthy.
Wise and Healthy Aging embodies the respect and care Santa Monica has for its growing population of seniors. It provides quality services for adults, from the severely cognitively-impaired to the most active and engaged. It is a clearinghouse for information about aging itself and resources for the elderly-all in one organization, staffed by true professionals. With my 98 year old father living with me, I am grateful and relieved to have these resources readily available.
Oasis is my favorite playground - where I take fascinating and well-taught classes and attend timely and intriguing programs. These stimulate my brain, enhance my health and provide important and meaningful social interactions for me and hundreds of other seniors. I have learned to play bridge, explored short stories and art history, and learned about American politics and the International Space Station, to name a few experiences. Until the pandemic arrived, I planned to take advantage of the travel opportunities sponsored by Wise and Healthy Aging-a trip to Iceland.
Definitely a 5-star organization!
Marching in the Santa Monica 4th of July parade while expertly waving pompoms, dancing to the song Kiss by Prince, and applauded loudly by the crowds, is just one example of how participants in Wise and Healthy Aging's Club 1527 demonstrate the joys of being an elder in the community.
A rich variety of classes and activities (book club, art classes, exercise sessions, cogent lectures, field trips, to name a few) nurture the body, the brain, and the spirit .
I have not had experience with the adult day care, but have toured the area and am impressed by the staff's compassionate care for adults with cognitive disorders.
This is a gem of an organization.
It's hard to overstate the importance of the work being done every day by the deeply committed, competent and caring people at WISE & Healthy Aging. It's an incredibly difficult moment for non-profits like WISE. But even under the looming challenges posed by private and public funding uncertainty, WISE has stepped up to meet the increased needs of clients, including seniors and other people most at risk during this pandemic.
WISE has pivoted to significantly scale up its delivery capacity, providing those unable to safely leave home fresh WISE Diner meals as well as delivery of grocery boxes, local food bank supplies, assistance with grocery shopping as well as ongoing social work outreach. Now more than ever, the support and care that WISE provides to the seniors and vulnerable people in our community are absolutely essential lifelines.
I felt compelled to help my community out during the COVID crisis, and I'm so grateful to be able to contribute by helping deliver meals and shopping for groceries - safely! Through my volunteering, I have an even closer view into the professionalism and compassion that guide every person working at WISE, as well as a growing appreciation of the ongoing depth of need in my community in Santa Monica and the West Side of LA. The chance to get to know a little more about the people who depend on WISE programs and services - not only their struggles and concerns, but also their perseverance, bravery, wisdom and humor - has been inspiring and life-changing for me.
WISE & Healthy Aging is the “go to” agency, with a strong track record of well-coordinated and comprehensive responses to the needs of older adults and their caregivers. We have a long history of working collaboratively with WISE & Healthy Aging. WISE & Healthy Aging Community Aging Resources & Education Department offers excellent evidence-based trainings to the seniors in Los Angeles. The Agency leadership and staff are steady, reliable, and innovators. This organizations plays a critical role in the well being of Seniors in LA County. Celia Brugman, Community Health Manager, Kaiser Permanente. West Los Angeles.
I can't say enough wonderful things about WISE and the impact they have on our elderly and the community. Caring for our elderly and providing life changing services is so essential. I am so grateful for what they do from their adult day care to training and support for caregivers. As a daughter of a father who had dimentia and my mom who cared for him, the challenges and struggles are real. WISE empowers our elderly and gives them their dignity. Love this organization and love the staff and all the volunteers.
I have been volunteering at WISE & Healthy Aging in Santa Monica for almost a year, on a weekly basis. I am always amazed at the caring, wonderful people who work there each and every day with a smile on their face while helping the elderly of the neighborhood. They are always respectful and eager to help whatever their needs may be. The services they provide are so numerous and many at no cost to the recipient. All their services are aimed at making life a bit easier, healthier, and fun for our aging population. They offer day trips to museums and local attractions aimed at educating and keeping seniors active. They offer day care for older, dependent adults as well as counseling and education for caregivers. There are even classes for those with early memory loss to keep the brain working! I could go on and on...it's just a great place for our seniors. I'm so grateful to be a part of this place and so thankful for what I have learned, enabling me to be more understanding and caring for my elderly mother.
I am a retired physician who has been attending exercise classes and other activities at Club 1527 at Wise and Healthy Aging for over 4 years. I find involvement in the above as extremely rewarding and actually it has helped to prolong my life as well as those of the other participants. It has been extremely beneficial in so many ways ( physically, mentally and spiritually). Sincerely, Marvin S. Wolf M.D.
About 2 years ago I retired from being an administrator at the University of Southern California, and before that at 20th Century Fox. I knew that one of my goals in retirement was to make a difference in people's lives. I almost immediately began volunteering at WISE & HEALTHY AGING as a Caring Companion. I am able to visit (in their homes) older adults who have limited ability to get out or have social interaction. I've been visiting with a woman for 18 months and we both derive much value from the relationship. This is an invaluable program that WISE makes available to the community, and I feel very grateful that I'm able to be a part of it.
I'm also a member of Club 1527, where I attend the Improv class. I used to be a professional actress, so the opportunity to "play" with all of these talented and open seniors is quite inspiring. Our teacher is great, and everyone shows a willingness to play and be silly and communicate and get out of ourselves to interact with others. This is only one of the many programs that WISE offers to it's Club members.
Additionally I'm a member of a focus group on aging, which helps us to discover things about our personal aging process that can be shared with others to keep us "Wiser and Healthier" as we grow better. I'm very grateful that I have Wise & Healthy Aging in my life.
After being a legal secretary for many years, I retired 2 years ago because of some health issues. I have been coming to the Club daily for the many exercise classes that are offered. The instructors volunteer their time and the classes are much better than classes offered at gyms. I love the instructors and staffs' energy and compassion. There is such a nice diversity of people and I have made friends with an amazing group of people. We have created a wonderful networking system that gives us many other resources that are available for local seniors. There are many events that honor the various nationalities and help people to better understand the various cultures. We had a wonderful turnout of Club members marching at the 4th of July parade, showing we might be seniors but we all are still young at heart. I would highly recommend the Club to anyone contemplating Retirement. I can't think of a better way to start each day.
I have had an opportunity to travel with members of WISE & Healthy Aging travel club to the Big Apple and the East Coast islands. The trip was well organized and stress-free for traveler like me who often react anxiously to unfamiliar surroundings. Although there was a moment of panic when I heard of hurricane Jose might be coming to the islands!
WISE provides me with an opportunity to integrate with the community and explore new things outside of my comfort zone and to stay active with event such as local and international trips. Thank you WISE & Healthy Aging
I have had an opportunity to ride along for delivery of Valentine gifts to a handful of seniors in Santa Monica. It's such a privilege to hear their life stories and to share their joy of being there to celebrate a special day. I was also fortunate enough to receive a hand drawn picture of myself after we spent a little time with him. I believe seniors appreciate companionship and WISE & Healthy Aging was able to provide a small but warming gesture to the senior community. Job well done!
I feel blessed to have found this nonprofit organization, both as a volunteer and also as a member of "club 1527". Volunteering at this organization fulfilled my desire of "continuous" working while club 1527 allows me to go places where I would normally not able to go because of the distance (the club provides coach bus with air conditioning). Meeting new friends and sharing stories about past careers and families are invaluable and fun. Can't wait to go into the office for my volunteer duty and another day trip in the sun!
Wise and Healthy Aging is the quintessential center for seniors, providing a broad variety of services and classes in a professional compassionate atmosphere; making us seniors feel relevant alive and vibrant. I initially took a class through their Caregiver Training Academy a few years ago and became a volunteer soon after. It continues to be a heartfelt experience ~ and a stellar one at that.
WISE & Healthy Aging is a fantastic organization that offers a broad array of services and programs for older adults. Staff members are caring and dedicated professionals who work diligently to offer top-notch service. As a board member of the Rotary Club of Santa Monica, I have had the privilege of working with WISE & Healthy Aging on a couple of great service projects targeting seniors in our community. It was so gratifying to see the beneficial impact these projects had on the older adults. In addition, my son’s elementary school class visited WISE & Healthy Aging and participated in a wonderful multi-generational activity with the seniors. Students and seniors had such a lovely experience interacting with each other. I am also very impressed with the diversity of activities (including exercise classes, creative arts, games, and excursions) offered by their Club 1527. Overall, WISE & Healthy Aging is certainly one of our community’s greatest assets!
WISE & Healthy Aging is a fabulous organization that offers a broad array of valuable programs and services for older adults and caregivers. The staff is knowledgable, kind, and respectful and always willing to go the extra mile to answer questions and help seniors find the resources they need. I am very grateful to be a Board Director of this fine nonprofit organization that serves 30,000 older adults and family members each year.
I am continually impressed with the wonderful work Wise and Healthy Aging does for the Santa Monica and greater Los Angeles Community. The organization offers a broad array of services including adult day care, socialization, peer counseling and support groups, ombudsmen services, home care, caregiver training, and transportation to name a few. Wise and Healthy leadership is dedicated to continual innovation and exploration of expanding needed services. Staff are expert in the delivery of services to older people and at the same time demonstrate the caring and empathy critical to high quality services.
considerable experience, expertise and caring to the delivery of services
WISE & Healthy Aging has a long history as a first class organization ... extremely well run with devoted professionals dedicated to the mission.. when other organizations struggle and close .. WISE has focused on ensuring services continue but with flexibility to right size to the budget. this is a fiscally strong solid organization .. that makes its commitments and finds ways to cross purpose and maximize results. i have also been ever so grateful that they are truly a trusted source for 24 HOUR HOME CARE ... when my husband was recovering from major pelvic reconstruction as the caregiver i would not have survived without some relief... WISE was there for me and my husband.
Wise & Healthy Aging Day Center and all the amazing staff have been a blessing to both myself and my mother. My 78 year old mother diagnosed with dimentia came to live with me 10 months ago. I would not have been able to remain working and cope with all the difficulties that come with care taking had it not been for WISE. The quality of the entire staff is far beyond my initial expectation. The smile on my mom's face every morning when I drop her off at 8AM and pick her up at 5:30PM solidifies this daily. The quality of program, facility and the individual care she has received is of the highest quality. Thank you! You are saving our lives currently! We love you. It's not always easy but you have made it truly AMAZING!
Upon my retirement I began searching for a friendly gathering place to meet new friends and to stay active physically, emotionally and intellectually. I found all this and more at "my Club", as I affectionately refer to it. Through Candice's gentle suggesting, I became a volunteer as a Pilates instructor. This allows me to continue one of my career passions even in retirement. The friendships I've made through the "Club" are priceless. The piece of mind I have just by knowing of the services available to me through this organization.....again, priceless! Thank you, Candice and Wise and Healthy Aging for just being YOU. Mary Sue
Club 1527 programs are consistently excellent with speakers and presenters on current and relevant themes as well as periodic discussions on books and films.
Besides the intellectual stimulation of medical, technological, financial and nutrition topics, the ethnic diversity of the members and volunteers is celebrated with various holiday events replete with cultural foods and music activities.
Today, the news is all about living one's old age healthfully, physically and mentally, and Club 1527 makes it possible...
The Club 1527 exercise classes and their volunteer instructors are outstanding; the staff
personnel are thoughtful and efficient and most of the day trip excursions have been very interesting and enjoyable.
The Ted Talks and other special presentations have been well chosen and planned.
This center is a gem! I enjoy all of the exercising classes- I go everyday and take at least 1 class (great variety) and sometimes 2. Center offers so many interesting lectures & day trips. Wonderful place to socialize and feel beautiful aging. They really care about your well being here!
WISE & Healthy Aging has been a major part of making my retirement richer. The services provided to seniors is the best. It is one stop shopping for whatever a senior needs help. It is very rewarding to see smiling faces on those arriving each morning for exercise classes, lectures and social events. I have referred friends to the Benefits Dept., Care Management, Adult Day Care and Club 1527. They have all thanked me and continue to attend classes and use the services and are pleased. I referred a friend who lost her job and has a family. Because of the services she was able to get financial advice, help to enroll for health benefits and referrals for food. It carried them through until she and her husband found employment. WISE and Healthy Aging makes a difference in people's lives. I am honored to be a volunteer for such a wonderful organization!
WISE & Healthy Aging is a top notch organization that effectively meets the many needs of seniors and their families in a loving, warm setting. WISE staff are highly regarded professionals dedicated to their work and constantly strive to offer the very best to each individual they serve. WISE is an amazing organization and its programs and services are crucial to the communities it serves. In addition to serving as a board member, my mother also participates in WISE activities and also serves as a volunteer. I have seen first hand the benefits of her involvement and how it has enhanced her quality of life and become an integral part of her overall wellbeing. WISE & Healthy Aging is simply amazing.
The Senior Day Center at Wise and Healthy is a wonderful support for Older Adults and their caregivers. The clients are truly engaged in social interaction, exercise programs, creative activities, memory boosting and musical programs. When many who are at this stage in their lives are lonely and inactive, Wise & Healthy brings activity and enjoyment to those who come here. The caregivers/activity leaders at Wise and Healthy are kind, compassionate and always thoughtful about giving the clients dignity and respect in a genuine and caring way. As a volunteer, I have learned so much from clients who may have challenges with memory and physical ability. Their positive attitudes and sharing of personal stories and experiences have inspired me to have gratitude, kindness, patience with everyone I encounter as we will all be of this age at some time. i recommend Wise and Healthy Center for Aging for Older Adults and for Volunteers. A positive experience will follow.
As an AARP Tax Aide volunteer at Wise & Healthy Aging assisting seniors, low & middle income preparing tax returns through out the year. We are provided office space & assistance from the highly skilled staff. Because of the location our clients may take advantage of the activities & programs at Wise & Healthy Aging. My experience in visitation of other senior centers in the Los Angeles area do not compare on their level of passion, understanding & professionalism focusing on the health & aging of seniors with their dignity. The best senior center that offers the most!
This is a warm and friendly place, and I like volunteering here. The staff enjoys its work and I think the clients sense this as they look relaxed and comfortable here as well. No matter how many pesky questions I ask my supervisors as I get trained for my job, they always take time to patiently and courteously help me out. That says a lot, doesn't it?
When I first met my care manager, Abigail Benitez, through Wise & Healthy Aging, I was a 93 year old woman with arthritis so severe I could only walk with a walker. I needed help.
I am still a 93 year old woman with a dog and an apartment, but I have a new lease on life.
Abigail got to work immediately. She cut through red tape, dug up resources I didn’t know existed and followed through.
Abigail assisted in making my bathroom comfortable for my aging knees with a bath bench and a commode. Abigail bolstered my tiny food budget with food stamps and helped me through to Medi-cal.
I am still a 93 year old woman with the dog and arthritis, but life is a lot easier now.
I know Abigail and WISE & Healthy Aging has my back.
I was able to volunteer at WISE during a school fieldwork experience. The caregivers and environment was amazing and so welcoming. WiSE is an amazing place for older adults to get social interaction, physical exercise and stimulating cognitive experiences. Every client who receives care at WISE is given individual attention and is actively involved in each activity. Since my school fieldwork experience, I have had the opportunity to continue to visit WISE and put on dance shows with my dance students. My students love visiting WISE and the older adults love the experience as well!!!!!
I am a retired attorney with health problems. Wise and Healthy Living has been such a benefit to me that I relocated a few doors away to take advantage of the programs available. My life would be more difficult without Club 1527. It is well managed and a terrific benefit to the elder citizens of Santa Monca.
Wise and Healthy Aging is changing my life for a better life in so many ways, in fitness classes, new friends, movies, lunches, and a special welcoming. I'm 76 and this is my new family and I'm very grateful. Been going about 9 months and currently on Advisor Board. Santa Monica is a great city.
I am 66 years old, widowed and retired. I found Wise and Healthy Aging when looking for a place to volunteer at, and I sincerely thank God for having guided me to this Center.
I started volunteering at the adult day service, four months ago.
I am really amazed at all the love the staff gives to the elders, how much they care for them.
There are many activities offered to them everyday, and they are constantly entertained challenged and motivated to enjoy their lives and capacities ( music, sing along, dancing, arts and crafts, trivia questions, and many more activities) .
I love going to volunteer, because you can relate to all these elders and you can get to know them and show them love.
The Center is clean and very well kept. I often think of how much my parents would have loved to be able to come to Wise and Healthy Aging before they both past away at 88 years old.
Whenever I have the opportunity to talk to the elders as I am volunteering, they all tell me how much they appreciate the Center, how loved they feel there, and how much they enjoy coming because it gives them an opportunity to meet and share with others instead of staying home alone. They feel very secure and taken care of.
The Center also offers counseling groups, financial advising, transportation and mobility programs, Elder abuse prevention program, personal money managment and many more...
I have also joined the Club 1527 of Wise and Healthy Living, and I love going to participate in several very nice activities they offer every day of the week. From Fitness classes, Yoga, Zumba dance, a program to prevent Alzheimer's , Spanish Conversation classes, to watching a movie once a week, or going to the ballet with a supervised group for example. A lot of the members of the Club stay for lunch everyday, and they are not charged for it.
Men get together to play chess, domino or cards most every day... It is a great place for people that feel lonely and are at an age where it is hard to make friends... Here at the Club 1527, they have a great time and they make friends...
Every single one of the staff working at Wise and Healthy Aging treat you with love and respect.
They are always with a smile on their face, willing to help and care for all the people that go there...
I cannot say enough good things about this place... I am very pleased to have found it and to be both a volunteer with the elderly and a member of the Club 1527. I highly recommend it !
I am a retired public defender and now a volunteer at Wise 4 or 5 days a week. I help out in the adult day care program where many of the clients have dementia or alzheimers. I am continually impressed with the caring and supportive nature of the staff as they treat the clients with the utmost dignity. It is a fun environment that goes out of its way to make sure that all feel included. The daily program provides activities to make sure that both the body and mind are active. There are three clients at least 100 years old and a number who will be reacing that plateau in the next few years.
As a public defender, I spent a few years working in the mental health court dealing with conservatorships. I would frequently visit board and care facilities to meet with conservatees and often was extremely disappointed at how these elderly individuals were treated by staff. When I first came to Wise to observe, the interaction between staff and clients was what attracted me to the program and led to my volunteering there. Nothing has changed my mind in the past three years as it only gets better and better.

I have been volunteering with WISE Healthy Aging and Living for only a few months now, but I can honestly say that it has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life. As a twenty-year-old college student, it is easy to get wrapped up in my schoolwork and friend circles. This volunteer experience is helping me to realize how valuable our lives are and not to take the limited time I have for granted. WISE paired me with a 97-year-old woman to visit at least twice per month, every month. During our visits, we talk, laugh, and share stories. I also sometimes play guitar and sing, something that she seems to enjoy greatly. It may not be much, but I can already see the difference that this is playing in both my life and the life of the woman who I have been visiting. WISE has also been extremely helpful and supportive, and I would definitely recommend others to get involved if possible.
Having been employed by WISE & Healthy Aging for the past several years, it has become evident that the structural support and historical foundation of the agency has allowed for continued expansion of services for older adults, giving consumers as well as employees a shared experience of success. As a result, I feel proud to work with a team of such passionate individuals who hold strong desires to make a positive difference in the world.
