Mission: A smithsonian institution affiliate, the wisconsin maritime museum engages and educates the public about the maritime history of wisconsin and the great lakes, including wisconsin's world war ii submarines and uss cobia. The museum shares this rich heritage by collecting and preserving artifacts and archival materials, creating interactive exhibits, promoting research, and presenting award-winning educational programs. A forum for information about the planet's largest watershed and fresh water system, this privately funded museum is recognized as one of the leading maritime museums in the country and the "premier maritime museum on the great lakes. " in 2005, the state assembly designated the museum "the state of wisconsin's maritime museum. "
Programs: Collections & exhibits:in the last quarter of the 2016, we instituted a short moratorium on accepting any new items for consideration as donated or loaned collections. This allowed staff to work through the backlog of items in collections. Cataloged over 2,400 photographs, objects, books, and manuscripts (done by both staff and volunteers); re-housed naval architectural blueprints from the manitowoc shipbuilding company for the 28 subs built in manitowoc for wwii; continued work on improving care of collections housed at the museum's off site collections facility; opened the major new exhibit, "wisconsin's underwater treasures phase ii;" received a major donation of wood carvings of wisconsin fish from mr. Roger newhouse and opened a temporary exhibit of same; continued planning for technology upgrades to other exhibit galleries, including smartphone technologies.
education (programs for adults and families) - following are program highlights in 2016: uss cobia overnight programs served 3,866 participants with an additional 2,698 participants in educational programs and team-building activities; smithsonian day; saturday learning series (reaching thousands of our visitors with talks and workshops on various topics related to our maritime world); 41st annual model ship contest; uss lagarto remembrance ceremony and programming; watershed ambassadors summer camp; christmas tree ship celebration & community day; launched our second, annual sub fest which attracted 15,000 visitors to this event; continued work as a lead institution in the regional effort to establish a new, noaa national marine sanctuary off our shores, including work on submission of nominating documents and community outreach activities.
uss cobia-related work: continued hull and interior maintenance work; continued work on engines; put aerators at dockside to deal with winter ice formation; completed improvements to shore power connections.
