Causes: Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection
Programs: Biological field station programs - thirteen undergraduate research projects involving 19 students were funded through the institute's undergraduate research grants for the environment (urge) program, the gordon art fellowship, and the nature in words fellowship in 2014. Students and faculty mentors conducted summer research projects ranging from studies of invasive species and threatened species to a poetry project on the lessons of nature. Educational institutions such as grand rapids community college, kalamazoo college, western michigan university, and albion college brought students to the institute for field studies in conjunction with courses they offered. Community environmental education programs - courses, programs, hikes and conferences were presented for the community to teach a variety of environmental topics. Community programs ranged from land management workshops to a birds of prey program. Wildflower hikes, snowshoe hikes, and winter tree identification hikes were offered. In 2014, over 75 programs brought in approximately 3,750 participants to these types of offerings. The public is also welcome to hike the institute's 7 miles of trails on its 661 acres daily at no cost.
